_About Me CONCEPT_

Design is a way for me to express myself through the creation of my projects. Designing allows me to pull inspiration for concepting from anywhere and anything to be able to create innovative designs. My style of illustration helps me to create bold eye-catching graphics for placement on various surfaces. This book goes beneath the surface of my designs and provides an insight into my design mind and my trail of concepting for the design projects shown. ABOUT ME_

Being inspired allows me to use my creativity in my design life, as well as my everyday life. I am often inspired by all things vintage and retro, children’s books, patterns, and many forms of music. As a surface designer, my imagination comes into play, as none of my projects would exist without my wild imagination. Whether I am designing for greeting cards, children’s books, paper goods, clothing or packages, no matter what surface I use, I love designing!

PROJECT_NEW ORLEANS DELI

01

_A Pepper in Every Pot OBJECTIVE_

This project was to create an identity, products and packaging for a deli that needed rebranding. I chose to create my own company, Pep & Vinegar, a Creole deli with a feisty New Orleans flair. I needed to create invigorating packaging labels with eye-catching product names and unique products to inspire people of any age to want to experience the jazzy atmosphere and zesty flavors of down-home Creole deli food. SOLUTION_

Pep & Vinegar is a unique deli that represents the style of New Orleans with its diverse product line and exciting packaging. I used an energetic green to be appealing, different colored labels to provide variety and stimulation for the eye, and many typefaces to create textures to give the packaging an eclectic look. Its sassy style, however, still provides the company with a vehicle to deliver its message: delicious Creole food in a comfortable setting.

_Come One, Come All! OBJECTIVE_

This project was to design an entire line of products for a party pack to be sold at a high-end boutique to parents of small children. It was important to create a cohesive party pack to provide a unique birthday party theme that would appeal to parents, but still entertain children. I wanted to portray the exciting carnival look and feel from a different decade in a fun way, and the ever-popular monsters helped me to do this. SOLUTION_

The Monster Carnival Kids Party Pack, with its greeting cards, invitations, party hats, goodie bags, and more, provides the higher-end client with the tools to give a fun children’s party in a unique letterpressed style. The colors are vintage, parent-friendly and gender neutral. The distinctive theme of Monster Carnival is a great vehicle to bring the weird, but adorable carnival monsters to life, while helping the party participants to pretend they are monsters with horned party hats and mustaches on sticks.

_On the Surface OBJECTIVE_

Surface design is the use of decorative elements to produce artwork and objects that are aesthetically pleasing. For me, surface design is the optimal way to combine both graphic design and illustration. I enjoy concepting for surface design projects to create innovative layouts and designs, and generate multiple ideas for these projects. I also look at trends to determine what is currently popular in the market and what will sell the most. SOLUTION_

In looking at trends, I have found that vintage and retro designs are currently popular. In my surface design projects, I often take inspiration from vintage graphics and fonts, and use this inspiration to create different styles to vary my own style, as style is what makes a product stand out from the rest. I try to make my designs simple, but fun. I frequently use hand type decoratively and use patterns to create depth and texture. I research color palettes, to arrive at new color groupings, while still following trends.

Meier used a very slight slope, with classically proportioned capitals and tall ascenders. It had a refreshingly new touch, due to a complete reliance on roman type as a model, especially regarding form and stroke use.

PROJECT_BARBIE BOARD GAME

_Fashion Meets Fairytale OBJECTIVE_

This project was to design a board game and its accompanying packaging, along with the associated company, product and title logos. I decided to create my own game using fairytales and Disney’s princesses as inspiration, and selected Mattel’s Barbie Fairytale as the means to make the game fun and interesting for girls. Because the Barbie product allows girls to pretend and dream, I wanted to depict the game’s theme as being magical, while expanding the princess market for Mattel’s Barbie. SOLUTION_

The Getting Ready for the Ball Barbie board game is engaging for girls because they can win dress-up jewelry and game pieces as they attempt to get Barbie to the ball. I designed mostly in Barbie pink to keep the style and feel of Mattel’s Barbie, but put my spin on the graphics by adding fairytale colors along with gems and glitter. I mimicked Barbie’s current packaging, but rebranded the Mattel Game logo, and created a new Barbie Fairytale logo and a new title logo, Getting Ready for the Ball.

_A Place of Ideal Perfection OBJECTIVE_

This project was to create a paper company promotion which consisted of a book, swatch cards, and a poster, and formulate a concept out of the name of the paper line. I selected the Utopia paper line from Appleton Paper Company. Because of the name, Utopia, I decided to use Karl Marx’s theory from his Communist Manifesto to portray the concept of the perfect society. I needed to put a positive spin on this theory instead of showing the actual results of practiced Communism. SOLUTION_

I designed my book, An Ideal Society: A Utopian Theory, along with the corresponding cards and poster, using the Swiss style in both layout and font, along with bold glyphs as symbols of hope. I used only one font to represent unity. I transitioned the colors from black, darker grays, and maroon to cream, lighter grays and pink to depict the evolution of society and its behavior and show the positive power of hope. The positive spin presented in the book also represents the superior quality of the Appleton Utopia paper line.

PROJECT_GARDENING KIT

_Grow What You Eat OBJECTIVE_

This project was to create an identity and a new gardening product line for an existing company. I selected Martha Stewart because I felt that I could design for her clientele and decided that I would create a kit, along with basic starter gardening tools. I needed to make sure that I designed this line with the simple, but distinct style of Martha Stewart, while still making it colorful, youthful and playful. I wanted to target women who have a passion for gardening and cooking with fresh vegetables and herbs. SOLUTION_

My concept for this project was to grow and cook your own food, so the slogan was, “Grow what you eat, and the container for the entire kit was a cooking pot. I tied the ideas of gardening and cooking together by including a recipe box containing vegetable seeds and instructions for planting, growing, and cooking the vegetables on recipe cards. I used bright colors to represent the vegetables and used color-coding to represent the categories: seeds and vegetables, recipe box and pot, gloves and seed cups, and tools.

_Child’s Play OBJECTIVE_

Children’s design includes toys, clothing, baby products, books, paper goods, household items and the packaging for these items. Children’s design allows me, as the designer, to create with a childlike state of mind and create with a childlike essence. Determining the target gender and age group helps to choose an appropriate theme or design. A designer needs to design not only for the child, but also for the parent because it is often the parent who selects items for the child. I keep this in mind when I concept. SOLUTION_

Children’s design allows me to use my imagination to think of silly concepts that are cute and adorable. When concepting, I look at various other children’s designs, take many ideas and combine them into one concept. I also look at children’s trends to help set the tone of the stories I use in my designs. I often create designs that are vintage or retro, but also try to make them simple, bold, and eye-catching. I enjoy designing with colors that are fun and expressive and that children will love.

PROJECT_FRENCH CHEESE CO.

_Les Fromages de Versailles OBJECTIVE_

This project was to create an identity, products and packaging for a cheese company that needed rebranding. I chose to create my own company, Let Them Eat Cheese!, a high-end French cheese company inspired by the luxury of Marie Antoinette’s life and her famous quote, “Let Them Eat Cake!”. I needed to create packaging with the rustic feel of the French countryside where the cheese was made, but with stylish labels intended to target lovers of cheese, wine and fine French food. SOLUTION_

Let Them Each Cheese! is a distinctive, high-end French cheese company that sells unique and rare flavors of cheese that are exclusive to France. I created their logo to replicate the design of a cameo, which was so popular during Marie Antoinette’s era. I used distressed wooden cheese boxes to provide the rustic feel of the French countryside. For the product labels, I designed with French colors, various decorative fonts, and ornate patterns in the Rococo style to depict the lavishness of Marie Antoinette, along with the velvetiness of these extraordinary cheeses.

_Orderly Chaos OBJECTIVE_

This project was to create a one-topic, non-fiction book out of assorted weekly design projects, including photos, type animals, infographics, bit-tiff lock-ups, paper collages and patterns. I wanted to select a topic that is not commonly seen, as well as wanting to display a dark subject in a different light. I selected putrefaction, the third process in death, because I wanted to show this process in a scientific, but artistic way. I wanted to show that the process after death could be elegant and beautiful, instead of just disgusting. SOLUTION_

My imagination played an important part in designing the various projects contained in this book because I had to create and photograph things that were virtually impossible for me to capture. I used the Victorian era and old medical books as inspiration and was able to create patterns that look like Victorian wallpaper and doilies. I was able to depict bugs, exploding organs and rotting flesh in an artistic way, and used the color of green mucus to give the book a creepy, but elegant look.

_It’s a Draw! OBJECTIVE_

I use illustration in many different ways, including to tell a story and to send a message to the viewer. I feel that my illustrations are done in a graphic manner instead of a traditional one. When researching for a project, anything can spark a concept, which allows me to use my imagination. I use concepting to create new layouts or narratives that have not been done before, and often arrive at multiple ideas that I could use. SOLUTION_

Through the use of concepting and imagination, I am able to create illustrations that can enhance the experience of the viewer. The stylization of my illustrations is often wonky, flat and graphic, vintage, and/or playful and silly. I often create designs for children’s stories and try to redesign characters with whom I grew up with. I use many mediums and methods, including letterpress, printmaking, pen and ink, painting with gouache and watercolor, and creating vector drawings and other graphics that are strong and bold.
