Commemorating the best of HR! T

he HRM Awards 2017 fully lived up to its billing as the region’s biggest HR showpiece events on February 24. Over 700 HR professionals as well as business leaders spanning the breadth of the regional economy, came together at The Ritz-Carlton, Millennia Singapore to celebrate the storied accomplishments of the HR field over the past year. With 108 finalists battling across 22 award categories to be crowned as the best of the best, this promised to be a night

filled with drama, suspense and elation. This year’s awards saw the inclusion of three new categories: Best Workplace Culture and Engagement, Best Change Management Strategies and Best HR Transformation through Technology, again reflecting the dynamic shifts in focus in these areas over the past year. The evening commenced with host Nikki Muller serenading attendees with a song, while guests were later also treated with an entertaining and thrilling hoverboard dance, and young comedian Jacky Ng.

Big winners Changi Airport Group (Singapore) scooped home the biggest prize on offer, the coveted Hays Award for Employer of Choice gong. Justina Tan, Managing Director, People, Changi Airport Group said her organisation was deeply honoured to have been awarded the accolade. “As a newly corporatised entity of only seven years, we are by no means an established company and are still really young,” she said. “So this recognition is a good encouragement for us to continue on the journey to make Changi Airport Group one of the best places to work. “A lot of what we are today is because of our people, and that has also helped contribute to our strong employer brand which allows us to continue attracting very good talent.”

Lynne Roeder, Managing Director, Hays Singapore, said her organisation was delighted to have sponsored the Employer of Choice accolade for the seventh consecutive year. “It’s always a spectacular night; we love coming on and working with HRM Asia, which is an amazing organisation to connect us with the HR community,” said Roeder. “The Employer of Choice award is so important to us at Hays because it is a key measure of what an entire organisation is doing. We’ll always sponsor this award because it’s the most important one of the night.” In the SME space, Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore at Zhongshan Park fought off stiff competition to snag the e2i Best SME Employer of the Year award. Josephine Chua, Director of HR and Quality at Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore at Zhongshan Park, said being an SME has never impeded the organisation from investing in people initiatives. “The company may be an SME but we invest in believing in our people and we invest in progressive practices,” said Chua. It was also a night of personal glory for Chua, who was crowned Best HR Leader, giving Ramada and Days Hotels Singapore at Zhongshan Park two awards for the night.

Two other organisations also picked up two honours each, namely, Tower Transit Singapore (Best Workplace Culture & Engagement and HR Manager of the Year), and Accenture (Best Next-Gen Opportunities & Development and HR Rising Star of the Year). The biggest individual accolade of the night, the Outstanding Contribution to HR, was awarded to Jaclyn Lee PhD, Senior Director, HR and Organisation Development, Singapore University of Technology and Design. Admitting that she was completely taken aback by her nomination, Lee nonetheless said she felt “overjoyed” that her years of hard work had been recognised and celebrated. “The most highly satisfying aspect of my career is the ability to mentor the next generation and to coach and mentor others to be as good as you are, and to see them along their HR journey,” said Lee. “I aim to continue to do what I’m good at doing, and to contribute to the community and profession. What’s more important right now is helping our millennials to really equip them with the skills to manage and to build the next generation of HR leaders.” Once again, HRM Asia would like to offer our congratulations to all the winners from the 2017 HRM Awards. We look forward to seeing you again next year!
