Become a powerful

Key Person of Influence in your industry

Daniel Priestley, successful entrepreneur and author, will highlight the importance of marketing your skills in order to stand out from the crowd Every professional needs the ability to market their abilities and expertise, and network in order to maximise their exposure on a professional level. Entrepreneur and author of Become a Key Person of Influence Daniel Priestley has founded a five-step sequence to help professionals become “one of the most highly valued and highly-paid people in their industry”.

√ The workforce is made up of “Newbies”, “Worker Bees” and “Key Persons of Influence” (KPIs). If you’re not a KPI, your full time job should be to become one. Nothing exciting happens outside that inner circle and there is an ever declining role for ‘functional’ people versus ‘vital’ people

√ Income distribution is not fair, and that is not going to

change any time soon. By understanding and applying the five- step KPI method, you will find yourself on the valuable side of the equation

6

STJOBS HR SUMMIT 2014 EXPO GUIDE

At the STJobs HR Summit 2014, he will be sharing how a person can become a Key Person of Influence (KPI). He will explain who specifically is a KPI and why is it important to become one. Priestley says that every industry has a small group of people that can be considered Key KPIs. “They are the ones that the media goes to first for quotes; they are the ones who come up when clients search for solutions to their problems; and, consequently, they are the ones that generate an exponential amount of attention, and thus influence, in their industry.” He adds that KPIs are not necessarily better qualified then others in their industry, but they have learnt how to package their skills for maximum impact and are rewarded exceptionally for it. When questioned on how his personal experience has helped him in providing the idea of a human KPI, Priestley says: “I moved from Australia to the UK and set up a business there whilst knowing no one. It was critical for my success to become a KPI in my industry and in the process of doing so, I also got to meet a lot of other KPIs, which allowed me to identify and document certain patterns.”

“Key Persons of Influence are not necessarily better qualified then others in their industry, but they have learnt how to package their skills well for maximum impact and are rewarded exceptionally for it” He emphasises that becoming a KPI does not happen overnight and it is not something a person can learn in a two-day seminar. “It takes hard work, it pushes you to new levels but our commitment when we launched this programme three years ago was to be known by the success of our clients.” Priestley’s Key Person of Influence module can be approached with a one-day event, online training, up to the full-fledged 40-week programme. He explains that 40 weeks is the right time to work with people and help them package and promote their intellectual property in a way that delivers incredible results. When it comes to the HR industry, Priestley says it is no different from any other industry and has its own KPIs. He adds that he has worked with many HR professionals, whom have gone on to become the thought leaders in their industry on many different aspects of HR. Priestley also says that it is useful for HR professionals to know how to both attract and to grow KPIs in their businesses. “The days of the faceless corporation are fortunately on their way out and highly identifiable thought leaders in your business are what will attract ever better opportunities.”

PROFILE CENTER FOR CREATIVE LEADERSHIP

Are you committed to

talent sustainability? In a time of unprecedented uncertainty and a fastchanging business environment, the world’s focus turns to talent as a crucial resource for business sustainability. Strong leadership talent is needed at the top, and at all levels and functions within organisations. But how do organisations sustain their talent pipeline? How do organisations retain and develop their high potential leaders in a highly volatile and competitive world? And perhaps most importantly, how do leaders at all levels accelerate the development of talent? It all begins with the organisation’s commitment to talent management. And for senior HR professionals this means a mindset shift to become a ‘Talent Accelerator’. Being a Talent Accelerator means taking a step back from day-to-day HR responsibilities and a step towards aligning and integrating talent management efforts in service of continually attracting, developing, and retaining people with the capabilities and commitment needed for current and future organisational success. The Center for Creative Leadership (CCL®) is a top-ranked, global provider of leadership development. Our cutting-edge solutions include:

Core Open Enrolment Programmes • Leadership at the Peak • Leading for Organisational Impact • Leadership Development Program (LDP®) • Leadership Fundamentals

One of the most powerful ways to accelerate talent development is simply helping leaders to have better conversations with their talent. Unfortunately, these conversations either go wrong because of poor delivery, or happen too infrequently to have any impact. Organisations need leaders who know how to have better ‘Talent Conversations.’ A Talent Conversation is not done to someone but with someone. It is about building a relationship that allows managers to influence employees toward improved performance, development and positive outcomes. As a Talent Accelerator, you are positioned to cultivate an organisation-wide commitment to drive talent development!

TALENT CONVERSATIONS At CCL®, we often hear excuses from leaders that they do not have time for such activities. Talent conversations, when done well, become a part of everyday business. Join Dr. Roland Smith, an accomplished CCL researcher and author of books “Talent Conversations” and “Influence”, at the STJobs HR Summit on 29 April at 11.30am and find out more on how to bring Talent Conversations to a place where development becomes real. It’s time to build commitment to the organization and engagement in the work. It’s where you have the opportunity to accelerate development and results. Encourage your leaders to have “talent conversations” before it is necessary, or too late.

100% Employee Engagement – Guaranteed! Engagement expert and author of The Engagement Formula, Professor Ross Reck will highlight the importance of engaging employees and how organisations can implement the effective Engagement Formula to achieve 100% engagement levels

AND LEARN √ What is Employee Engagement √ When Employee Engagement occurs √ How to implement Employee Engagement in an

organisation in order to achieve 100% engagement levels

14 STJOBS HR SUMMIT 2014 EXPO GUIDE

Engaging employees is essential when it comes to the success of any organisation. Companies have various ways to engage their employees but the effectiveness of each strategy may vary. Engagement expert and author, Ross Reck, says: “The biggest mistake organisations and HR have made with regards to employee engagement is they have tried to implement it without knowing what it is.” He adds that there are many definitions of employee engagement but they describe “what it looks like and not what’s actually going on. “Once we know what it is, successful implementation is very straightforward.” Reck will address this point during the first ten minutes of his HR Summit presentation, by sharing what employee engagement is and when it occurs. It is also important for companies to understand that there is a difference between “motivating” their employees and “engaging” them. Reck states that employee motivation and employee engagement are actually the exact opposites of each other. “Employee motivation assumes that employees have an in inherent dislike for work and if left on their own, they will do very little. In other words, employees are basically lazy and it’s management’s job to motivate them,” he says. He adds that

management then attempts to motivate employees through the use of external motivators such as rewards and punishmentsthat are often referred to as “carrots and sticks”. Reck observes that employee motivation assumes that employees will respond rationally to external motivators, like rats in a laboratory respond to positive and negative stimuli. “The problem with ‘motivation’ is that people are human beings, not lab rats. They have a mind of their own and they use it to determine what’s best for them.” Employee engagement is entirely different. It assumes “that employees are motivated internally by something called self-interest—pursuing the satisfaction of needs that are important to them,” explains Reck. He adds that everyone is already programmed to pursue the satisfaction of a set of inborn needs and that makes it impossible to motivate people at work because they’re already motivated to pursue their self-interest. “The only thing the leadership of a business can do if it wants its employees to perform at a high level is to engage the motivation (self-interest) that’s already there –to create a situation where the harder people work toward pursuing the satisfaction of their own needs, the harder they work toward the goals of the organisation,” explains Reck. He adds that organisations with high levels of employee engagement understand this and have created “environments where employees are free to be themselves, have fun and follow their passion – the motivation that’s already there inside them”. In his STJobs HR Summit presentation, Reck will also share his “Engagement Formula”. This is a leadership model that he says will guarantee an employee engagement level of 100%. Currently,

“The only thing the leadership of a business can do if it wants its employees to perform at a high level is to engage the motivation that’s already there” the global level of employee engagement is around 30 percent. He states that “only three out of ten employees are willing to do whatever it takes to make the business successful.” Thus, seven out of 10 employees are not working anywhere near their potential. Reck says that the Engagement Formula makes it possible for employees to satisfy their need for meaning through performing their job. When this occurs, employees form an emotional attachment to their work. “When employees are engaged with their work, they come to work every day excited about giving every bit of energy, creativity and passion to performing their job.” Thus, employees create a competitive edge for their organisations that cannot be copied – they are constantly making innovative improvements to products, services and customer experiences while providing superior levels of customer service which results in loyal customers, says Reck.

BIO BRIEF Ross Reck is president of Ross Reck & Associates. He is also the author of The Engagement Formula, Turning Your Customers into Your Sales Force, The X-Factor and his very popular newsletter: Ross Reck’s Weekly Reminder. In addition, he is the co-author of Destination:Work!, REVVED! and the best-selling The Win-Win Negotiator. A compelling and dynamic speaker, Ross has been featured at hundreds of meetings, conferences and conventions throughout the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia. His consulting clients include Hewlett-Packard, John Deere, American Express, Janssen-Ortho, Inc., Shire Pharmaceuticals, Philip Morris International, the Chicago Cubs, Rolls-Royce and Xerox.

Building the Man Utd empire Manchester United is one of the world’s most famous football clubs. To complement its success, a plethora of employees are working hard behind the scenes to ensure the club remains a football juggernaut When one thinks of Manchester United Football Club, their perceptions are defined by the amount of trophies and accolades the club have garnered throughout the course of their illustrious history. However, there is no denying that behind the club’s incredible success, its off-pitch commercial juggernaut has been a key driver towards its glory on the pitch. “Manchester United is a club with a rich history and strong values,” says Sadella Yip, Head of Strategy and Partner Operations, Asia-Pacific, Manchester United Limited. “We strive for excellence by learning from the successes of our past, both on-pitch and off-pitch, while finding ways to innovate. This ethos is infused into our talent management philosophy.” Yip says that the sheer size of United’s popularity and worldwide brand stems from its ability to reinvigorate and innovate continuously. “As an employee, being able to work for a brand and club that really innovates itself constantly motivates everyone at the club,” she says.

Yip stresses that setting up regional headquarters is a vital component of the club’s massive commercial empire. “The Hong Kong regional office was set up to support our local partnerships and get us closer to our supporters,” says Yip. With different countries possessing various cultural traits and tastes, Yip stresses that it is crucial to possess a keen understanding of the respective markets. “We have to assimilate into the local culture and the target is being able to support the partnerships in those regions,” she adds. Yip adds that employees working for Manchester United naturally adopt a two-prong approach to their professional and personal lives. “With a club like Manchester United, sometimes it hits two birds with one stones, we have individuals who are die-hard fans of the club and are also competent in the work they do,” she says.

BIO BRIEF Sadella Yip currently heads up HR and Recruiting in Asia-Pacific for Manchester United (MU). She ensures the overall HR strategy supports the growth needs of the business. Yip also identifies top talent who are set up for success and empowered to build the business. She works with partners to leverage their MU sponsorships to increase employee engagement. You’re Hired! In what is a first for the STJobs HR Summit Expo, a series of free Q&A sessions will be held during the main breaks of each session. HRM catches up with Jonathan Allen Yabut, winner of The Apprentice Asia and one of the six speakers featured

Most contestants on The Apprentice Asia leave with the famous catchphrase “You’re Fired!” ringing in their ears. But Jonathan Yabut is still pinching himself after hearing the all-important “You’re Hired!” expression from Air Asia CEO Tony Fernandes at the end of the latest series. “There are days when I still feel shocked that I won a reality TV show that I’ve been a fan of since Bill Rancic’s (first winner of The Apprentice US) days,” says Yabut, who was the youngest male contestant at the age of 27. His momentous victory has earned him a one-year contract as the chief of staff for AirAsia, where he is now based in Kuala Lumpur. Yabut, who hails from the Philippines, says his win is testament that hard work and grit are vital ingredients towards becoming successful, adding that he displayed the most of these during the show. “When I rationalise how I made it, and why I made it, I realise it’s grit,” he says. “I think my victory was a Cinderella story on how success always requires grit – that no matter how many times you fall down, you stick with the plan and do your best.” Yabut, who made his entrance to the corporate world as a management trainee for Globe Telecom, and then as a Senior Brand Manager at GlaxoSmithKline Philippines

before joining The Apprentice Asia, says his professional career has now seen him veer away from a Philippines-only perspective. “My career has been mostly exposed to the ‘Filipino way’ of doing thing and being exposed to AirAsia has opened my world to realise that there is a myriad of other ways to ‘skin a cat’.” “I have built networks with many professionals across industries. When I join Tony in his meetings, I learn new ways and styles on how to manage partnerships and execute negotiations,” he says. In his new capacity as Chief of Staff of Air Asia, Yabut strongly subscribes to the theory that “leadership is all about standing back, and not standing out”. “Most leaders think that their position is bestowed because they’re deemed as the best in the team, which is not necessarily true,” he says. “As you climb up the corporate ladder, you need more emotional intelligence, and not IQ. Leaders do not dictate what

needs to get done, but clear the path for the team to get those things done.” Yabut says that when a leader personifies purpose in their career and fulfils these pursuits within the corporate sphere, they will conquer the hearts and minds of their charges, who will in turn be engaged and motivated to perform. The Apprentice Asia winner is very much looking forward to communicating with his counterparts at his STJobs HR Summit session. “I love talking – so more questions from the audience will be great,” he says. “Lately, I’ve been reading this book entitled, Good Boss, Bad Boss and every page I flip, I can’t help to nod my head as every statement is something I can always relate to.” Yabut adds that he would love to chat and interact with STJobs HR Summit Expo visitors who are keen to share their leadership or people management challenges in the workplace.

DESSERT SAFARI! Lunch break at the STJobs HR Summit is a great time for delegates to refuel and recharge after a morning of high-powered presentations. The experience is being raised a few notches this year with the introduction of a unique food journey

The culinary team at the Suntec Singapore Exhibition and Convention Centre is pulling out all the stops to provide delegates with a memorable food experience at the STJobs HR Summit. In addition to a sumptuous lunch buffet and tea breaks, this year’s Summit also aims to be a dessert lover’s dream come true. Delegates will be treated to not one but nine different dessert stations, featuring a whopping 27 varieties of desserts. Spread across the Expo Hall, each station will feature a different selection of local, traditional and international

desserts, all prepared in handy bite-sized portions for easy eating and sampling. “Delegates can expect to find classic desserts such as our tiramisu and carrot cake, but we also have more unusual desserts in store – such as our raisin omelette, which is an Austrian delicacy,” shares Executive Chef Alfred Lee. For greater interactivity, every dessert station will also feature a live food preparation area where chefs will add the finishing touches to desserts. For example, at one station, chefs will wrap local coconut ice cream in “popiah” skins on the spot and serve it with a sprinkling of ground nuts.

Lee says he is particularly fond of bringing back old local favourites in a traditional way. “For example, our banana fritters are served with sambal tumis and grated coconut with a gula melaka sauce. Our glutinous rice balls are filled with red bean paste and coated with ground peanuts, sesame seeds and grated coconut.” As a leading convention and exhibition centre, Suntec Singapore prepares classic and traditional dishes from all over the world consistently well, whether it is hosting a private dinner for 10 people or a banquet for thousands, says Lee. “My approach is to pair modern kitchen technology and food presentation with traditional techniques, recipes and ingredients. In this manner I offer authentic flavourful dishes in new and diverse ways. Are you ready for an epic dessert adventure? Chef Lee offers some useful advice: “Be sure to leave some space and plan your journey to sample the 27 unique desserts we’ve prepared for you. If you can’t sample everything on the first try, don’t worry. You will have two days over which to enjoy the ‘Dessert Safari’. Bon appetit!

Suntec Singapore can cater up to

10,000 meals per day via its three kitchens

ABOUT THE CHEF Chef Alfred Lee’s passion for creating exceptional dining experiences spans over more than 24 years and covers a range of cuisines, including European, Chinese, Asian and Fusion. Lee began his career with Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre as an Executive Sous Chef back in 1995 with the inception of the Centre. Since then, he has become one of the masterminds behind the numerous culinary accolades it has received. Lee took on the Executive Chef’s hat, and full reign of the Suntec kitchens, in 2010. Drawing upon his 15 years’ experience with Suntec Singapore, he and his brigade of 33 chefs have delighted numerous notable luminaries such as Bill Gates, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, President Hu Jintao, Prince Albert of Monaco as well as distinguished Heads of States, high level government officials and Singapore’s business and political elites. His culinary odysseys also go beyond the confines of Suntec Singapore – having catered to the Singapore Airshow 2010, the Istana, and the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. During that event, he led his team in preparing more than 110,000 meals across 10 venues for athletes, team officials, the workforce, and the media. Lee’s mantra for good and flavourful food is etched in the philosophy that great ingredients coupled with simple cooking techniques, fired with zealous passion and delivered with care, is a principle that should never be compromised. His innovative style has been the pride of Singapore’s many iconic events for more than 15 years.

Lim, a motivational expert and a veteran expedition leader to Mount Everest, will be highlighting why change can be difficult for organisations and how leaders and HR can go about implementing it. Companies face several pitfalls when it comes to change management. “HR needs to understand why the change needs to happen, who’s going to champion it, and what resources are present to help make the transition a smooth one, and lead to the goals achieved. Clarity of focus is often missing or (can be) poorly articulated,” explains Lim. He adds that 60% of change initiatives fail in one way or another, largely from poor buyin and conflicting signals. For example, Lim says, after a retrenchment exercise, HR should not be focusing on teambuilding initiatives for those left behind – at least not until the pain

“HR needs to understand why the change needs to happen, who’s going to champion it, and what resources are present to help make the transition a smooth one, and lead to the goals achieved” and anxiety from the exercise has dissipated, and people are back on an even keel. “HR needs to pre-empt the resistance that meets with a change management initiative, and lead the process of communicating and winning buyin from the key people involved.” Lim’s professional expertise has helped him with aiding organisations in change management. “I’ve been engaged numerous times to lead corporate retreats or design a team transformation process,” he says. “What I find most useful is when organisations ask for a process, rather than an ‘event’, and have the motivation and commitment at the highest levels to see through the process of change. If there is poor buy-in, the project is doomed. Lim will also be using his personal experiences of mountaineering to highlight his thoughts on change management. “I’ll be combining some lessons gleaned from the highest mountains in the world, audience participation, videos and some great stories to make this session a ‘must-attend’.”

Last Man Standing… After four Olympic campaigns, 12 years of hard training, 111 stitches in the leg and a broken neck, speed Skater Steven Bradbury created history by winning Australia’s first Winter Olympic gold medal. HRM finds out what delegates to the STJobs HR Summit can learn from his inspirational journey of triumph over adversity Steven Bradbury has been dubbed the ‘luckiest’ Olympian ever. He won his 2002 Gold Medal after all of his opponents in the speed skating final fell over – Bradbury was able to cruise pass them to the finish line. This became known as ‘Doing a Bradbury’ and is now officially a term in the Australian slang dictionary. However, winning Olympic gold took a lot more than just luck. Just like in business, strategy and planning were key ingredients in that success. “Just like in sports, business is also about showing up every day

and giving it your best,” says Olympic Speed Skater Gold Medalist, Steven Bradbury. Four Olympic campaigns and 12 years of hard training, including a bronze medal in 1994, 111 stitches in his leg, and a broken neck in the year 2000 are all testimony to that hard work and persistence. Eighteen months after breaking it, that same neck was supporting an Olympic Gold Medal. During his Olympic campaign, Bradbury trained five hours a day and six days a week for 12 years and then, suddenly he became an overnight success. Participants in his STJobs HR Summit session will be left with the lasting impression that much of the prize is in the journey. If you show up every day and give it your best then it’s only a matter of time until you create your own version of ‘doing a Bradbury’ and like he did at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, become the Last Man Standing.

Teamwork is critical Bradbury presents on teamwork being a key ingredient of success. “Whether in business or sport, in order to

succeed you need a team of people around you for help and support,” he explains. At the 1994 Winter Olympics, held in Norway, Bradbury was the pre-race favourite to win the 1,000-metre event. Unfortunately he was knocked down in the first round of the competition. The enormous disappointment he felt, had to be quickly overcome in order to pull himself together for the 5,000-metre team relay. Bradbury and his teammates went on to win Australia’s first ever Winter Olympic medal by claiming bronze in that event. On the television screen, it was Bradbury alone who took Gold in Salt Lake City. But while his team (including coach, parents, physiotherapist, equipment manager and teammates) was not on the ice with him, he says he could not have won Australia’s first Winter Olympic Gold Medal without them. Today’s competitive world is the same. Success cannot be achieved if one takes it on by oneself. Bradbury says an efficient behind-the-scenes team is simply not optional. During his presentation at the STJobs HR Summit, Bradbury will also share how he crafted a tailored solution and picked a target market to achieve business success through his speed skate-making company. Bradbury teamed up with his friend and former skater Clint Jensen to form the Revolutionary Boot Company (RBC), making custom-made speed skates. Today, RBC’s main market is custom-made cycling shoes, exporting to 18 countries. Bradbury’s success in business adds impact and credibility to his presentations – here is someone who has actually practiced what he is preaching. Bradbury’s presentation will impress upon delegates that organisations can sustain a culture of success and achieve a positive mind-set, by helping staff do their own version of ‘A Bradbury’ and realise their full potential.

“Just like in sports, business is also about showing up every day and giving it your best”

BIO BRIEF Steven Bradbury is one of the world’s most colourful Olympic Champions. His career as an Olympic athlete was driven by determination and, most importantly, a will to succeed. He competed at four Winter Olympic Games and was Australia and Southern Hemisphere’s first ever Winter Olympic Gold medallist. He also won the 2007 Order of Australia Medal for services to Australian Sport. With the same passion he showed on the ice, Bradbury has continued his success as a motivational speaker, facility and speaker at over 650 conferences and events in 12 countries.

study. Our qualifications are recognised by Universities around the world enabling progression onto academic higher education study programmes. Our LCCI suites covers a range of business-related qualifications, which focus on the practical skills and knowledge that employers around the world value in the workplace, so students can aspire to a better job and have a better life. The qualifications we specialize in are:

Regulations and Credit framework Our BTEC qualifications are regulating using the rules of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Qualifications that are regulated by the QCF are made up of units. This provides learners a flexible way to obtain their qualification. Each unit has a credit value which tells a learner how many credits are awarded when a unit is completed. The credit value gives an indication of how long it will normally take to prepare for a unit, each credit will usually take 10 learning hours. All units build up to qualifications, there are 3 different types of qualification in the QCF: Award, Certificate and Diploma. If a qualification includes a unit that you have already been awarded, you can use that unit towards that qualification; units awarded by different awarding organisations can be combined to build up qualifications. Many businesses around the world value BTEC because of its practical and innovative approach to work related study. British Telecom, one of the world’s leading providers of communication solutions, operating in more than 170 countries value BTEC to develop and enhance the skills of their workforce. They believe that our “qualifications can give many people a nationally recognised qualification that motivates and empowers people to believe that they have economically valuable skills.”

LCCI - the first choice for ambitious professionals Whether students are looking to find their first job, progress in an existing career or find employment overseas, our popular and flexible LCCI qualifications provide students with the knowledge and skills to actually do the job. This is why they are trusted and valued by employers world-wide.
