EAST AFRICA KIDS FASHION MAGAZINE
FROM THE EDITOR Dear Reader,
A
s it may reach different kind of people, am here to remind you that it really doesn’t matter what the past held but how you do about the information and knowledge you got from it, you are fully responsible for that. Will take you a little back to my home. I grew up knowing I have to read every time I got a chance to, my dad being a teacher, he used to wake me up at 5.am to do my first morning prep. This carried on till when I was in high school. One thing I am proud of till now is my dad, waking up every morning to make our breakfast, this is something unbeatable till very day. Throughout the whole process it’s the small tiny things that my parents did for me and my siblings. Their presence, from beating us up, tying us outside in our garden, to showing up at 6pm at my school just to come pick my specs and have it repaired within one hour, I mean, wow, I live for those moments. That’s what every kid is looking upto from their parents and guardians. To Show up, be there for them, correct them, praise them, love them. They are yearning for that presence of father figure, they yearn for their mothers love and laughter. If by any chance your a daughter, son, find yourself at the crossroads of whether you are loved enough by people arounnd you, take that love and spread it to someone else in your life. Show that love to another human. In that way someones day will be beautiful because of you. Love will find you always. Don’t go beating them up because someone grew up like that, don’t go around spoiling them with gifts because someone elses daughter or son was given everything. Communicate with the kid, listen to all the one million words she wants to say about her day, Listen to his whole idea of football even if you don’t undertstand it. Just listen. Don’t brush them off because you too busy for such stories. It wont be perfect or easy, it may not seem as it is in words, but try, JUST BE THERE, happiness is right infront of you. Sometimes that’s all that matters. I may not see it all but I feel it all, says the Broken child, beside the riverbed.
Enjoy the read

STORY TIME “THE DIM LIGHT ON HER CROWN… ” BY Amantle Kobe, Gaborone Botswana
She shut her eyes tightly pretending to sleep, praying and pleading the Almighty that this would soon be over. The whispers’ from her bedroom door made a flood of tears flow down her beautiful marble black skin. “What have I done to deserve this?” she questioned her petite brain. “Feel free to do anything you want to her, but each extra minute comes with an extra cost. Rip her skin, scratch her face and bite her belly, “her evil Aunt Rosalina uttered. It had been a family norm that Lelentle had turned to a means of gathering ends meet for her family. A couple of men; young, old, rich and mediocre were her regular abusers. They would tear up her clothes, scratch her face and bite her body. Her throat was raw from screaming when the next entered. Luckily it was the last encounter for the day. “Stop it! Stop it!” Lelentle exclaimed, he slapped her face and let out an evil laugh. “You filthy rat! You think you are pretty? Who do you think is going to love you looking at your ugly face? ”Thabang, her Uncle mocked. It was only at the day of Lelentle’s birth that she encountered her first encounter with fate begun. Only three hours after the little bundle of joy’s entrance to this world, her mother Lorato passed on to paradise. Lelentle-Lorato they named her in memory of her late mother. Left to live with her drunkard father, Lelentle had no option because she suffered the consequences of her mother’s decision of deciding to marry Tumelo Lamorena, a famous business man in the great city of Gaborone. His arrivals late home for the past week had bothered Lelentle-Lorato; he did not even touch his food for the past week. What was up with him she thought to herself? Continuous coughing woke her up from her almost sleep, and she quickly dashed for her father’s bedroom. “Daddy! Daddy! What’s wrong?” she hurriedly tried to speak out. “Should I call the ambulance? “Lelentle panted in fear. With attempt to open up Tumelo’s airway with her tiny twelve year old hands, unending foam continued to erupt like a furious volcano from his mouth. “Be like your mother my love,” were the last words she ever heard from her father before letting out the last cough and closing his eyes. A week after Lelentle’s father, Tumelo was laid to rest, she found a note written to her under fathers bedroom lamp “LELENTLE-LORATO LAMORENA My life turned out to be a blessing after you were born, I couldn’t endure the love I had for you My love, my pride, My Joy where ever life will lead you never forget the LORD. Your mother and I will be your guardians from above. Stay strong My Love and raise the family name up high. You are a true Queen. I LOVE YOU.”A tear streaked down her cheek but she held the letter close to her heart. Where will she start from? “What’s the nature of the relationship between Miss.Peolwane Bontle and Mr.Thabo Kwena?” “Mr. Kwena is Ms.Bontle’s legal guardian, of which he was authorized of her care when she was only six years of age Your Honor.’ “Can you tell the court more about these violent altercations Ms.Bontle has shared with you?” “Once she came to my house with a bloody dress, her tears mixed up with her blood, when asking her what had occurred she mentioned that her Uncle, Mr.Thabo Kwena had brought over three of his drunk friends over for the night, who then invaded her room while she was asleep and then used her. She showed me one of the scars they had made on her belly and the whipping Mr. Kwena had given her for her stubbornness during the previous night. She moved further to her neck where she showed me the marks she had received earlier that morning, with a threat to be killed if she ever spoke of the events that occurred the night before, after which she quickly dashed to my house for help while Mr. Kwena was asleep,Your Honor. “Anything else?” “No your Honor.”

STORY TIME Continued....... “With the powers vested in me under the Children’s Act of 2009, I rule that Mr.Thabo Kwena be sentenced to twenty-five years imprisonment and six months of community service.” Then she proceeded to hit her hammer. This was one of the cases that had made Lelentle-Lorato Lamorena, Botswana’s best judge, at only twenty one of age she had graduated with a Master’s Degree in Children’s Law from the University of Oxford. Her passion for law made her accelerate in the saturated industry where she owns her own law firm; Lamorena’s Attorney Generals. After enduring five years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse from her aunt Rosalina and her Uncle Thabang, who turned her into a family business she was later rescued by an angel, her High school teacher Mrs.Mpho who took her in as her child after she heard her story. Attorney Maylah Jones, who ruled out a sentence to her Aunt and Uncle, had always been an inspiration to help the vulnerable and abused kids throughout the country. As she entered her Mercedes-BenzG63, she set out for her penthouse by the Two Oceans shore in Cape Town. “Your love, “a song by Azana she had fell in love with played in the background in her drive from the Cape Town High Court. “Raise our family name high, you are a true Queen. I love you.” She remembered her father’s note as she parked her car in front of the penthouse she had owned together with her Husband Dr.Daniel Sophia. She had learnt that the tragic beginning of her life was not the end, but a means to unleash the diamond she was from the love that endured from her parents. “Ka nnete Lelentle-Lorato Lamorena” she whispered as she opened the door of her penthouse, translating to “Truly the Love of the Lord is beautiful.” FROM UGANDA
CARMEN SANDIEGO; THE BEGINNING As a young child Carmen never really knew much about her parents. She was always told by the lady who raised her, Coach Brunt that she was found on a maize field. Though she didn’t believe it, she rarely asked question to avoid testing her patience. She had always appreciated the lady for she was all she had. Little did she know she would sooner or later realize her whole life was a lie? Carmen had grown up on a private island that had an institution .It was where the coach supposedly taught physical education. Though she didn’t know what they did at the institution she had her suspicions. Finally when she was old enough to enroll in the institution, her legal guardian let her in on their dirty secret. It turned out to be an institution dedicated to training professional stealing .Carmen had always been cheeky .She had even earned the nick name ‘black sheep’ among the students. Though she didn’t believe in violence, she continued with the course. There she would learn all she needed to know about the art of stealing from the best criminals in the region. To be honest I truly believe that this was the beginning of Carmen Sandiego. Composed By; Crystal Ogutu

hen I look up at these photos I think about rebirth. Rebirth means a discovery of yourself. It focuses on your strength, eternal beauty and your magnificent culture. It’s the power and boldness which you posses. When you know yourself then you can genuinely love yourself. A discovery of inner truth. As many people are born in a world full of stereotypes, racism, colourism and sexism. Rebirth confirms a strong sense of self because they get to know who they genuinely are.

STORY YANGU (little miss Universe Kenya 2020)
Anita & Joshua Gitonga
Anita is a 12-year-old girl and loves all things creative as well as fashion, as her middle name depicts, “Mumbi” meaning one who creates. Her creative trait and sense of fashion can be seen to come from her father who is an interior designer and her paternal grandmother who she is named after, whose taste for fashion is still evident at her old age. Anita often attempts designing outfits for her doll and has perfected the art of braiding hair. It will be no surprise if she pursues this line in future. She has also occasionally indicated that she would like to be a doctor. This can be attributed to the many visits to the hospital as she battled severe food allergies within the first 3 years of her life. Up to the age of two, she was highly dependent on camel milk with allergic reactions that made her look like a skin cancer patient. Fast forward to this day, it is a miracle that she is thriving as a model, with her latest achievement being crowned as the reigning Little Miss Universe-Kenya 2020. Anita’s days are filled with juggling between school and other activities. She takes piano classes on Saturdays and participates in swimming as well as ballet during the week in school. In the midst of all these activities, her life is centered around her 8-year old brother, Joshua. Anita has demonstrated responsibility as the elder sibling to Joshua who has always looked up to her. After overcoming the food allergy, Anita started showing a love for being in front of the camera to a point whereby she was enrolled in modelling school just before she turned 9 years. Joshua admired the progress of his sister within a few weeks of training and he followed suit. They have both been participating in pageants every year since 2017, except for 2020 when Joshua opted to take a short break.

Joshua has proved to discover his potential as he has excelled in modelling and has since been awarded Tiny Mr. Kenya 2017 (Little Mr. & Miss Kenya), Little Prince of Africa, 2018 (Little Prince & Princess of Africa) and Junior Mr. Africa (Prince Princess International in Thailand, 2018) and Mini Mr. World-Kenya, 2019. During this period, Anita has inspired Joshua to keep going even when the it seemed challenging. This has been evidenced by the titles that he has acquired. Apart from modelling, Joshua is passionate about soccer which he trains every weekend. He constantly keeps up to date with the trends in the sports arena. He also loves science and is looking to pursue activities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). He keeps his mind challenged by watching episodes on experiments and innovation, with his favorite being Da Vinci Kids. He is due to enroll in Young Engineers club in his school. His ambition in STEM has been further been made possible after he and Anita were offered 1-year free membership in Young Aviators of Africa, following recognition of their modelling achievements by their school.
Anita is natural when on stage and loves being on the runway. She has been awarded Little Miss Photo Model, 2017 (Little Mr. & Miss Kenya), Mini Princess of Africa, 2018 (Little Prince & Princess of Africa), Little Miss Africa (Prince Princess International in Thailand, 2018) and Little Miss UniverseKenya, 2020. She will be participating in the international competition of Little Miss Universe 2021 in Georgia. This will be her second time to compete at the international level. Her crowning as Little Miss Universe-Kenya came as a pleasant surprise and she would like to challenge herself further as she realizes her potential. Anita and Joshua are both animal lovers. They are both volunteers at the Nairobi National Park as part of their wildlife conservation activities. In light of his passion for sports as well as humanity, Joshua would like to be involved in activities that support sports in marginalized areas to give hope to under privileged children. As the reigning Little Miss Universe-Kenya, Anita would like to further engage in activities involving human-wildlife conflict resolution as she seeks avenues to finance these activities even beyond her reign. Participating in modelling has been one of the best things that has happened to Anita and Joshua. It has provided a platform to enhance their creativity and confidence levels. Every child is unique. Their potential needs to be explored and nurtured. And hence just as Albert Einstein once said, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

TPO⁴ came out of “ The power of 4” which are the 4 kids l have . I named them the power of 4 because l saw God’s power in all of them. WHO AM I Time is Money they said, how much money you would want to really be able to fill the missing gap. Endless it is. This year kicked off in such a silent mood, everyone held their breathe and wore their hearts on the sleeve as they slowly crept in to the New Year. With lots of high believe that the year would look better despite the pandemic. In the middle of all that, there are two girls, beautiful smart and amazing, being bullied somewhere because of their body shape, having little to no strength to stand up for themselves so they opted for what seemed easy for them, they left home because they didn’t want to bother their mother of what was going on in school. It was a 3 hour terror as they looked for them from one corner to the other. What do you think was going on in their heads? What hurt them so much that their only option was to run away? Was the school so adamant not to realize this? Did they talk to their mother before? All these questions are going through your head right now. Here to let you know that, the only thing that was missing in all this story is the fact that there wasn’t communication, but also as a kid if confident enough I would stand up for myself, on the other hand, I might not stand up for myself because the other person is your elder, I need to respect them. Moreover, they should have raised the issue to the parent, but again, how much weight and pain did the statement carry. So again it leads all of us to just respect each other, love one another and treat your neighbor as you would want to be treated. Parents be close with your kids, communicate with them and know what goes around in school, teachers don’t kill the self-esteem that’s been worked so hard from the extra-curricular activities, you are there to help them light up their dreams not deem them. Kids, love yourself so much in such a way that any negative word thrown at you, you just let it pass over your head. Be so confident that no light will be too deeming for your shine. Walk the ground and hold your head high above. Soar to greater heights and live that dream. Because. You are who you are, beautifully and wonderfully made. Who am I? I am God created and loved child, made in His likeness, and I will rise up, stand up and walk up to my purpose. Because this is Who I Am.
