Hsin Li is a Taiwanese architect. He graduated from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia with honor in 2017. His thesis Redefining joinery, supervised by Jordi Pagès i Ramon and Lluís Viu Rebés, attempts to look for a innovative way to fully utilise the notion of join with cutting edge fabrication technique, it is awarded with Building Innovation award in 2017 summer. After he graduated from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2011, he worked in Noiz architects as a project manager from 2012 to 2014. He worked with Edouard Cabay in Appareil as a collaborator from 2016 to 2017.

Redefining Joinery
Surface expanded joinery system in shell structure Master Thesis / Climatic matter 2017
Abstract Joinery, the skills to join separate pieces to produce a more complex item of timber. It is now facing several obstacles since industrial revolution which has led to the decline of traditional joinery industry, such as cost, mechanize difficulties and structural aspect of problems, the traditional joinery is not able to satisfy the requirements of modern architecture. This research proposes a new design method to redefine traditional joinery from three perspectives, geometry, material and fabrication that lead to three main expected results, customization, panellization of the construction and enhancement of the joint by taking the advantage of revolution of 3d modelling software, material innovation and digital fabrication. This research tests the potential of joinery using parametric design software and fabricates it with 3d printing and robotic milling to process complex geometry and learn the advantage and disadvantage of digital fabrication by comparing with the traditional joinery fabrication process simultaneously. As a result, the joinery is able to be liberated from the traditional frame structure system to achieve more complex form and meet the modern architecture trend at the same time remains efficient and sustainable. The surface expended joinery in a multiple axis interlocking system can assemble to a shell structure with controllable joint, optimized division following principal stress line to achieve better efficiency of material utilization and structural performance.

With the advantage of parametric design tool, designers get to process the designing of complex geometry with out obstacle, it is the key for liberating joinery from perpendicular structure system to unrestrained system, calculation of 3 dimensional rotation between each joint is no longer a impossible task. Further more, cross laminated wood has eliminated the weakness of typical timber; the direction of wood grain that restricts the orientation of joinery, lead to a result that laminated wood can take forces from different direction which released joinery from perpendicular system. Panelization of the construction makes the surface extension of joinery possible, by dividing a shell surface into pieces of quadrilatheral with multiple axis joint, a comlex shell structure can be achieved with small scale of wood piece that cut out from flat wood sheet. To unify the joint orientation, a method is introduced in the system, when generating the basic pieces of joint, the front two side surfaces must be perpendicular to the surface normal and the back two side surface adapt to the adjacents, only in this case the pieces can be joint with neighbor pieces with out confliction of joining axis. The revolution of design tools, material, machinery transform the notion of traditional joinery into a customized, scaffoldingless, movable and easy assemble shell structure system.

3-3. Assembling
The assemble process follows certain procedure. 01. First edge row has to be assembled on the ground, with one side fixed on the ground it is easy to hammer the pieces in by only one person.
01
02. Erect the assembled row by one man pulling and the other pushing, then slide the fixture into the joint of the corner piece, anchor the row to the ground.
02
03. After the first column is also erected, the structure can stand by itself, the rest is easy, assemble the pieces in order.
03
04. Then the pieces can be assembled in the order of the number small to big, switching the assembling order is not allowed.
05. The edge of the hole is crucial, it is restricted to follow the exact assembling order, or there will be problems when closing up the hole.
03. A jack is required to lift up the whole structure at the same position so the fixture can slide into the space between the last piece and base, hammer in the wooden pin, the structure is done.

Abstract Since 2007, The Climate Institute has produced Climate of the Nation research capturing the nation’s pulse on attitudes to climate change. This year’s results show an increasing awareness and concern about the impacts of climate change and the country’s future energy mix amid the intensifying political debate. More Australians trust the science that says climate change is caused by human activities. The findings provide a critical opportunity for the Abbott government to better reflect public sentiment on climate change in its upcoming announcement on Australia’s post-2020 carbon pollution reduction target. More think that “the Abbott government should take climate change more seriously” and there is a strong expectation for government to regulate carbon pollution, move to phase out aging coal power stations, and invest in renewable energy. Under this public atmosphere, we think what the govornment is doing is far not enough to catching up the speed of going down, we need more aggrassive action to provoke peoples awareness about this issue. The building that has been tear down is now confirmed the RMIT campus building 22 which was their international department, the ruffians broke down the building facade partialy, created a huge sphere void in the center of the building, we believe it is an imitation of the artwork “Office Baroque” by famous artist“Golden matta Clark”, this cruel action did not ended that simple, (tree in building image)a sybolic tree like structure was then intalled in the middle of the void. Nobody was hurt in this action and the crime motivation is still unknow, but we believe the terrorist wanted to send some message through this action.
MICRO ECO SYSTEM
The aim is to rebuilt a eco system with in the building in the city center in a most dramatic way in order to reach the maximum impact that can bring to the public. The attck start with analysing the exsisting species living in Melbourne as the target to bring into the city. Their territory can be simply devided in to 3 height level: canopy, midstory, ground, by knowing this we can start to design the habitat which can contain all the species, the answer is the surrounding of a tree.

Abstract Globally modernization has speeds up the developement process of cities around the world over dacades, some country side are dropped behind with out changes, the ditch between well developed area and the opposite became bigger and bigger, it look just like those area are living in different timeline, in addition, some place even stopped developing due to varies reasons. In the era that population is over increased, land became very precious in certain area, to retrieve those abandoned place is the most effecienct way of land arranging, and the way to approach, reconnect, fulfill the gap between cilvilization is the key. This project try to renovate a cemetary in treasure hill; a place dropped out of the developement trend that remains as it was 40 years ago. The aim of the project if to create a connection between Taipei city and treasure hill, by making the assigning the traditional ritual as the program along the path, attempt to metaphor the different stage of life with the gradient changing in typology of space. To start from a energetic downtown to a silence end that even time stopped.
