10.–16.09.17 Struggle against deformity Copenhagen
Struggle against deformity The Architectural Studies field trip is an opportunity for students to visit sites of national and international significance and to study and portrait historic and contemporary architecture. Relevant sites were visited with the objective of learning with the five senses. The journey was focused on the city of Copenhagen and some of its most prominent architects: Michael Gottlieb, Kay Fisker, Peder V. Jensen-Klint, Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon, Bob & Wohlert and Praksis Architekter. The visit to the Thorvaldsen Museum opened a world of sketching and photographing stimulus with its multiple colours and sculptures. The large housing schemes of Fisker captivated our attention by the way how small delicate human detailing was included into the large radical urban gestures. The Grundtvigs Church brick construction with “naked” surfaces revealed, beyond a lesson of structure and construction, a purity of spaces and sacred atmosphere. By experiencing a number of Jacobsen’s and Utzon’s projects, we learnt about their care for the guidance of light, the haptics of their architecture, the spatial richness and bold integration of interior fittings together with the self-designed furniture. Their architectural legacy transcended in the work of following generations. In the projects of Bob &W ohlert and Praksis Architekter an additional care for interacting with the surrounding landscape or with the materiality of neighbouring buildings was achieved. An ability to observe and analyse architecture through graphic journaling and sketching, while participating in the range of visits, was emphasized. As a result, a documentary Field Book with analytical, atmospheric and detail sketches, photographs and graphic information, yields a valuable remembrance of the journey and bears a testimony of the acquired experiences.
