As most of you will already sadly know, Mike Kerrigan – a key member of our County Core Team – passed away suddenly in February. Mike and Donna had only just returned from a 6-week trip to New Zealand, and his death was an enormous shock to everyone. Our thoughts and prayers are with Donna, their family, and Mike’s many Scouting friends and colleagues. Over the years, many people involved in Hampshire Scouting have “gone home” - to use the tracking sign phrase. These are always difficult times, since Scouting is like a very big family, and we all feel the loss personally. Mike’s death was particularly poignant, and I’m writing this while his loss is still very fresh in our minds. Reflecting on his passing, I wanted to share a few thoughts • The commitment of our volunteers. Mike was ACC Strategy and Cluster Support, but he also volunteered to be our Compass Champion, led our County Conferences, and devised our Leadership and Management weekend. He and Donna also did an enormous amount with HQ on adult training and support, and were present at so many County events - from manning the information tent at H0014, to the launch of new Scout Groups. • The kindness of strangers. When Mike collapsed at the wheel of his car, other people in the car park rushed to help him, attempt CPR, and contact the emergency services. Mike would have done the same himself if it had happened to someone else. The first aid skills we learn as leaders and teach our Scouts are very valuable, the willingness to help is embedded in our culture, and you never know when they will be needed. • The warmth of Scouting. As news of Mike’s passing circulated, so many people reached out to Donna and to Hampshire Scouting to express their condolences and share their memories of Mike and Scouting. Emails, texts, Facebook posts, phone calls and visits from thousands of miles away flooded in. Although nothing can fill the huge gap he left behind, Mike’s family were overwhelmed by the support and warmth shown by the Scouting family. We all hope and pray that such situations will never happen, but sadly they sometimes do. When the worst happens, how we respond means so much. We will miss Mike, his vast experience and his cheerful optimism enormously. Hampshire Scouting will not be the same without him. And, as for everyone else from Scouting who has “Gone Home”, we will light a candle in his memory.

Mike Kerrigan, 28/8/1953 – 11/02/2015 How would you have described Mike Kerrigan? Enthusiastic professional, optimistic, energetic, family man, a ‘scouters scouter’ and a friend. I think is it the latter, that sums up many peoples thoughts about Mike – he was a true friend to many, and was always there to offer support or advice if asked. His preparation for anything he did was fastidious, his memory and records were second to none. I asked by email some weeks ago, about a presentation we did last year together as I could not find it – ‘here it is’, was the reply, attached! This from 12,000 miles away, the other side of the world! A consummate professional trainer in his business life, I remember he could get so frustrated with me when we worked together, as we did regularly, when I did not quite get the session plan together and worked from memory – “with your memory he would say, it’s a good idea to write it down”! Scouting in Hampshire will not be the same without Mike who started his scouting life in Sandleheath as Group Chair and then GSL. His

time in the New Forest continued as ADC(Leader Training) and then onwards to DC. He (and Donna) spent time sitting on National Groups through Gilwell, namely the National Adult Support Working Party and Adult Training Group and moving on to Chair of the Regional Adult Support Group. All these ‘additional’ appointments, gave Mike the tremendous depth of knowledge and experience he was renowned for. His latest appointment in Hampshire being ACC Strategy and leader of the ACC District Support team, and we need to also remember during all this time he was a trainer and member of the Hampshire Adult Training Team.

We will miss Mike, but I am certain his legacy will live on, something I know Donna, James & David will find comforting in the months ahead. Members of Southampton City District, Active Support Unit assisted by members of the District Team and the 13th Southampton Scouts, supported the 2014 British Legion Poppy Appeal. This is the fourth year that we have supported the Poppy Appeal. Our members were out with collecting tins for the week prior to Remembrance Day. In our twelve tins we collected a total of £2427.47p.This was a fantastic achievement and brought Scouting to the notice of the public,working for the community. RAISE MONEY FOR YOUR ORGANISATION: Take Part In The Chandlers Ford Itchen Walk On Sunday 7Th June 2015

Do you want to raise money for your charity or good cause, but don’t want to organise an event? We have the ideal answer for you and your supporters! We have organised a sponsored walk along the beautiful Itchen Valley on Sunday 7th June 2015 and so all you have to do is get your supporters to register to take part. This walk was initiated in June 2014 when it raised almost £7,000 for about 20 different charities and good causes. The full length of this walk has been extended this year to approximately ten miles and there is an option to walk a shorter section, a distance of approximately seven miles. We will look after the reception of all the walkers and the transport to the starting points. We will provide marshals along the route and make sure that water is available for all those taking part. For details of how to register yourself or your group for this event, pay your registration fee and manage your sponsorship money, a proportion of which will be paid to our Rotary Club, please see ou r dedicated website at: www.itchenwalk.org, where you can also download leaflets and other information.

The 14th Aldershot Beavers visited the Toby Carvery to take part in their chef school challenge during half term week. The Beavers arrived at the Toby at 10 am and were given fun fact sheets to do, then they were asked to draw their favourite vegetable which they enjoyed. The Beavers then had to guess which vegetables were in four different boxes before trying to name a different fruit or vegetable for every letter of the alphabet, this also proved difficult for the Leaders. After a round of true or false questions it was time to see what was for dinner! All the Beavers then tucked into a delicious roast dinner, carved and served by the Leaders (leaders got some too). All Beavers were given a goodie bag to take away with them. It was a great morning and helped the Beavers learn about Healthy Eating. A big thank you to all the staff at Toby Carvery that looked after us and arranged the morning. This is a picture of the Itchen South Beavers after there district archery competition and each group was presented with a knitted beaver mascot. The mascots pattern were found on the 1st Facebook beaver colony page so I asked my mum back in October if she could knit one for each colony in our district. We had 9 colonies at the time. My mum (Deanna Foote) and her friend (Doreen Hampson) started knitting straight away and by February they were celebrating with a small glass of something because they had finished in time for the archery competition. All the leaders, parents and beavers loved the knitted beavers. The competition was won this year by 6th Hamble well done to everyone who took part. Thanks Mum and Doreen!



For the first time the whole Group met for an evening! The Beavers & Cubs arrived at the Dr Peter Centre 5.30pm to start climbing, thanks to the fab District climbing team they all made it up the wall and had a great time! At 6.45pm the Scouts arrived and Muntjac presented the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award to Toby & Rory from the Beaver Colony, the Akela presented Lucy & Lily with their Chief Scout’s Silver Award. Unfortunately Amelia was unwell so unable to attend to receive her award in front of the Group. We hope she feels better soon! Then we welcomed Steph, Fundraising Officer, from Marwell Wildlife. She came to present each Lodge, Six and Patrol with the certificates for the sponsored animals they had chosen. Each section had held a sponsored silence and had managed to raise £390 to sponsor endangered animals at Marwell Wildlife. This meant that as a whole the Group had sponsored 13 animals at Marwell - hopefully if you visit this year you can keep an eye out for our sponsored animals! The animals sponsored were: 3rd Romsey Obuasi Beaver Colony - Owls - Zebra, Foxes Penguin, Adders - Snow Leopard and the Colony a Meercat. 3 Romsey Kumasi Cub Pack Yellow Six - Giraffe, Blue Six rd

Penguin, Red Six - Pygmy Hippo and the Pack an Amur Leopard. 3rd Romsey Ashanti Scout Troop - Eagles - Tiger, Kestrels - Penguin, Falcons - Meercat, Hawks - Giraffe and the Troop a Snow Leopard. This is a fantastic achievement and it was lovely to have such a great evening for our first evening together as a Group. Finally, we gathered together all the Cubs & Scouts for a photo who gained their Green Blue Peter Badge in Autumn - they worked very hard the last two summers pulling himalayan balsam from streams in the New Forest. Catherine, New Forest Native Plants Officer, of the Hampshire & IOW Trust is looking forward to their help again this year! Scout Report Tonight we went to the Dr Peter Centre to do climbing. We found out which animals we had adopted at Marwell with the money from our sponsored silence. We then split into two groups. One group did climbing, which was great fun, the other group did invitations for the PPP for their parents. Then after a while we swapped over. It was a great evening.

Swimmer stage 1 How to earn your badge

9th Lymington Sea Scouts Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scout & Explorer Squads from all over the country travelled to HMS Raleigh, Torpoint, Plymouth for the annual Royal Navy Sea Scout Swimming Gala at the end of January. 22 Scout Squads compete for the prestigious Otter Shield, 16 Explorer Units compete for the Explorer Trophy, and as they usually do the 9th Lymington squads put in maximum effort over the weekend, resulting in a good haul of medals, including 1st overall for Under 12 Breastroke, Under 12 Medley and Under 14 Freestyle, 2nd overall for Under 14 Medley & second overall for the Squad Relay. The outstanding performance from the under 12’s was rewarded by winning their age group & being presented with the Silver Platter. The under 14’s, led by Squad Captain Callum, were equally impressive, with 2nd overall for their age group. The Otter Shield is for both Scout age groups combined, there were high hopes in the 9th Lymington camp, however they ended up a very close second to 10th Christchurch (Mudeford Sea Scouts)- by just 2 points! Well done to Mudeford! 9th’s Explorer Squad had a very credible performance as well, especially as several of them were swimming in the older age group. Learn the general safety rules for swimming (such as not diving into shallow water or not swimming on your own) and where it is safe to swim locally. Show you know how to prepare for exercises such as taking part in a warm up. Demonstrate a controlled entry, without using the steps, into at least 1.5 metres of water. Swim 10 metres on your front. Tread water for 30 seconds in a vertical position. Using a buoyancy aid, float still in the water for 30 seconds. Demonstrate your ability to retrieve an object from chest-deep water. Perform a push and glide on both your front and back. Swim 25 metres without stopping. Take part in an organised swimming activity.


After weeks of planning - tonight was the night! Invites had been written & sent, responses received. Menus had been discussed, changed, amended again and then finally agreed on. Sketches had been (quickly) rehearsed. Shopping had been done. The hall was full of Scouts & parents waiting to sample the delights of the PPP!

This lashing, a simple whipping applied to two poles, is an alternative to the Round lashing. I found this on the German Scout Wiki (here in English for those who don’t read German). My troop will be doing some experiments to see whether this knot performs as well (or better) than the round lashing. The Sailmaker’s lashing is another whipping adapted as a lashing.

We appreciate the parents & siblings coming - it was lovely having you there - we hope you enjoyed it. Thank you to the Scouts for doing what needed doing and being good about it! A huge thank you to Shona & Tris who had the unenviable task of being in a very hot kitchen supervising the Scouts make 4 different toppings, cook over 100 pancakes - and topping the pancakes successfully!! Lastly thank you to Alex & Joe, my Young Leaders, for keeping the squash flowing and taking/counting the votes. Well done to Eagles & Kestrels who were joint winners of the competition for the best filling - all voted for by the parents. The evening was slightly manic - but good fun! Usually we ask a Scout to write the report for the evening, tonight it was written by a parent volunteer....... An enjoyable evening with sumptuous pancakes and a truly mouth watering experience with rip roaring skits – going home on a sugar rush and not feeling guilty because I had my 5-a-day! It was originally started by a group of Rover Scouts and Ranger Guides hence it’s unique name. They have then been joined over the years later by Brownies, Cubs, Guides and Scouts who have now become a massive part of the show. The entire Cast, Crew and Production team are all volunteer members of the Scouting and Girl Guide movements and the aim and vision of the show is to give young people the amazing experience of taking part in both the production and performance of a musical show presented in a professional theatre. Over the years Roverang has provided hundreds of local young people with the opportunity to meet new friends, try new experiences and grow in confidence as well have providing all its cast with that all important 5 minutes of Fame. ‘As well as all the amazing Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Explorers, Rangers Networks, and Leaders, we have some very Special Guests in the form of our Senior Section who are all braving a long awaited come back to the Theatre, dusting off their dancing shoes and lining up to entertain you all’ If you are looking for the perfect section, group or family trip to the theatre then this is it. Jump into an epic adventure as Roverang returns to the Nuffield Theatre for its 58th Year in a colourful music and dance extravaganza to bring you “The Curse of the Crystal Roger”. Performed by over 130 members of the local scout and guide associations, join Indiana Roger on a fantastic quest to find the elusive crystal skull. See the cast of the show travel the world in this awesome showcase of singing, dancing and comedy featuring young people from all over the local community. Try Caving on Saturday or Sunday the 21st or 22nd of March 2015 at Hampshire Scout Caving Club’s Caving Days. The activities are targeted at the novice caver who has little or no experience. If you have been before let us know and we can arrange slightly harder trips in the same area. A Caving Day consists of about 3 hours caving in the morning and 3 hours of caving in the afternoon(normally at Burrington Coombe and Priddy or in the local area). Based around Priddy in the Mendip Hills of Somerset the cost is £90 per group of 6 or part thereof (this does not include food or transport to Mendip). To coincide with the refreshed programme, a new edition of the brand guidelines has been published. As trailed in the December/January edition of Scouting, the section brands were updated in consultation with adults and young people in Scouting. A range of resources for the revised brands is available on the Scout Print Centre. The corporate ‘Scouts Be Prepared’ logo for Scouting and Serif Black font remain in use.

We now have a single set of brand guidelines for Scouting, providing advice on the main Scout brand, the fleur de lis (arrowhead) and the five youth sections. In addition to showing the various logo options and colour palette, you will also find information on our strategic aims, values, tone of voice, illustration, video and social media. There is now more emphasis on an integrated family of brands, with more obvious links to the fleur de lis and emphasising the continuity and progression in the 6-25 Programme.

Logos and badge artwork are now available on the Scout Print Centre. Logo generators to create personalised versions of the corporate and section logos are also available. The illustrated characters for the Beaver Scout section are also available to download.

In partnership 21st Romsey Rifle Club & Shackleton Rifle Club are hosting this event. This will involve 4 runs of approx 400m and air rifle shooting of 5 targets in standing position.

There will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd place medals/trophies awarded for age categories under 14’s, under 18’s and over 18’s and a team trophy. To enter you must be a Scout, Explorer, Leader, or Network member as at the date of the competition. It is recommended that all participants have attended a rifle shooting taster session prior to the event.

Tanzania 2017 Leader Recruitment Now Open! Hampshire County Scouts plan to take a group of 160 - 200 Explorer aged Scouts to Tanzania in the Summer of 2017. We are now looking for around 30 - 40 Leaders to help run the 8 - 10 Expedition Teams. We are holding open information sessions in Totton and Basingstoke on 31st January 2015.
