One of the best parts of my role is visiting camps. I love just wandering around, chatting to people of all ages, and shooting the breeze. Camping is often the activity that Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Scout Network – and adults – say that they enjoy about Scouting. It’s at camp that you learn to be independent. And it’s at camp that memories are born. Woodsmoke drifting across the field from a campfire, caught in the sunlight. Campfires in the evening, drawing everyone together to share hot cocoa and ghost stories. Morning mist lying low, in the magical hour before anyone else gets up. For young people, camps are an adventure, a chance to try new things, and the space and time to be with your friends. For adults, camps are hectic, busy, and tiring. But they’re also a chance to revisit the happy highways of their youth, see young people grow up, and the space and time to be with your friends. Perhaps that’s why camps are so tiring – we stay up long after the young people have gone to bed, sitting round the fire or in the mess tent with a gas lamp burning, talking about past camps and retelling funny stories which get better every time. Some things never change about camps. Cubs rarely go to sleep before midnight on the first evening, and they’re wide awake at 4am. You never come back with exactly the same kit you went to camp with, but you might be lucky and rediscover the plate you lost at a camp a few years ago. Explorers surprise you when they become young leaders, and suddenly become really useful and helpful. You can often confuse the visiting Commissioner by giving them a slightly wrong grid reference (or postcode for their satnav). And putting an alarm clock set for 3am under a fellow leader’s pillow is still very funny, even after all these years. So, for all the camps I’ve visited this year – New Forest East District Camp, Portsmouth Mix and Meet, Emlyn Patrol Camping Competition, Gilwell Reunion, Zombie Camp, H0014, Jamboree Training Camps, Gambia Training Camp, Gosport / Fareham East Emlyn Eliminator, Tanzania Training Camp, County Activity Skills Weekend, Hayling Island Group Camp, Gosport District Camp, Linked-in Camp – and many, many more… Thank you – and I hope you also have memories from these camps that last a lifetime.

beavers hit the beach O n Saturday 13th September 20 beavers and 6 leaders from 14th Aldershot Scout Group made the trip down to Littlehampton lifeboat station where they were shown the lifeboats and had the chance to sit in one and were shown where the suits and helmets are kept. They found out about how quick the lifeboat volunteers have to be when responding to a call out. The Beavers got to watch a DVD about training to be a volunteer and then had chance to try and get dressed in the wet suits in less than a minute, just like the volunteers do. After spending their money in the Lifeboat shop it was time for lunch on the beach, followed by some fun in the sea! An ice cream finished off the afternoon before travelling back home. District Soap Box Derby
Well, the day had arrived, Sunday 28th September, marked out with cones. 14 Aldershot Scouts th
In Scouting the Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards are the highest that can be achieved as anyone works their way through Beavers, Cubs and then Scouts. In the summer this year Lucy Stillwell from 14th Aldershot Scout group was awarded her Gold award. During the history of 14th Aldershot there have been plenty of Scouts that have received one or two of the awards, but Lucy is the first to receive all three. This means that Lucy has been with the group since starting at 6 years old and has worked her way through Beavers, Cubs and Scouts earning the awards on the way. She has had to complete nine challenges for the Gold award, including an expedition, plenty of nights out camping and helping in the community. Lucy is now looking forward to joining the Explorer unit in the spring and working towards her Platinum award. Also in the photograph is Bailey Cartlidge, who received his Gold award and Courtney Watkin who received her Young Leaders belt. Paul Stillwell - assistant scout leader
The annual Service of Remembrance for those Scouters in Hampshire who have “Gone Home” during the last year will be hosted by Scout Active Support at St. John The Evangelist Church, Underhill Centre, St Johns Rd, Hedge End, SO30 0BW on Sunday October 19th beginning at 2.00pm. Scouters from the County and Family members of those departed are welcome to attend. The service is followed by refreshments at 3pm. This workshop is a networking event to share ideas and interests in raising awareness and generating ideas for activities, themes or going abroad based on the global programme zone. Suitable for all ages from older Scouts and Guides upwards. Groups who have travelled far and wide will report on their adventures. Leaders planning trips abroad will find that those that have completed successful trips have an abundance of practical information that they can pass on. The 2015 Fair Trade cooking competition will also be launched. For Leaders this will help you achieve accreditation for module 19. It is a non uniform event, cost of £10 includes refreshments, lunch and hand out. The URC church is in the centre of Basingstoke, on London Street (RG21 7NU) only a few minutes walk from the rail and bus stations. Congratulations to...
Toby Brimson of Kaboom Networks (Itchen North) for achieving both his Gold DofE and his Queen’s Scout Award. These were presented to Toby, on 9th September 2014 by District Commissioner, Asa Moore. Before the presentation, Adam Jollans gave Toby the silver elephant to wear for the evening. Adam explained the elephant was originally presented to Earl Mountbatten of Burma. Later it was given to Hampshire Scouting. So it is used and not just kept in a drawer anyone gaining the Queen’s Scout Award is given the elephant to wear at their presentation. Toby gave a presentation explaining the activities he had completed to gain these awards. These included becoming an Assistant Cub Scout Leader, a gruelling expedition in the Lake District, involved with forming a band, taking part in Roverang (Scout and Guide show) and helping at Winter Camp at Gilwell. He rounded up the presentation thanking people who had helped him gain these awards including John and Pete from Andover for all their support with the expedition, Adam Mori for encouraging him to do the DofE in the first place, Susie, Mike, Lee, and Steve for signing off the relevant sections and finally his Mum for the constant nagging to complete both awards, with which he scraped in with 2 days to spare before his 25th birthday.

Hampshire Scouts Present ‘Stepping Out’ For the first time in Hampshire, the talent of our District Scout Shows will be brought together in collaboration for a one night only County extravaganza as Hampshire Scouts Present ‘Stepping Out’ to be performed at The Winchester Guildhall on 18th October 2015. Preparations are underway, however, we are looking for people to help push this project forward, from Publicity to Production, Costumes to Choreography, Budgets to Bands, Stage Management to Matrons the list is endless. The only pre-requisite is enthusiasm! Many of you will have seen the Scout Association’s VISION 2018 document and this is your chance to join in and allow creative activities to take centre stage in meeting the objectives. Caving Days 18th or 19th October 2014
Try Caving on Saturday or Sunday the 18th or 19th of October 2014 at Hampshire Scout Caving Club’s Caving Days. The activities are targeted at the novice caver who has little or no experience. If you have been before let us know and we can arrange slightly harder trips in the same area. A Caving Day consists of about 3 hours caving in the morning and 3 hours of caving in the afternoon(normally at Burrington Coombe and Priddy or in the local area). Based around Priddy in the Mendip Hills of Somerset the cost is £90 per group of 6 or part thereof (this does not include food or transport to Mendip).
