The Origin Of Minimalist Architecture

OBJECTIVE The requirement was to create a poster series based on a hypothetical architec tural event. The chosen concept for all three posters had to be expressed in 3 - dimensional t ype.

APPROACH When we trace back to the origin where the Minimalist architec tural st yle emerged, you can always f ind the critical inspiration from the De Stijl movement, the architec ture Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and traditional Japanese cultures. In this poster series, I construc ted three handmade t ypefaces, “Essence”, “Simple” and “ Void”, to represent the three origins of Minimalist architec ture. Each of them shows how the three origins have influenced modern Minimalist architec ture in the way of form, tex ture, and color.

APPROACH People have busy lives under the pressure of societ y today. We usually feel exhausted, but the fatigue seems not easily wiped outduring sleep. I would like to supply an accessible way of teaching people to identif y and solving their mental fatigue if they suf fer from it unconsciously.

OBJECTIVE Selec t a sign from an existing organization to improve. facilitate bet ter overall communication by developing a visual system. The designer needs to f ind out the intention of the sign and create a design skills to ser ve the intention. The goal is to use graphic design skill to improve the visual communication of the sign and transfer it into the nex t level.

APPROACH The original visual identit y of the San Francisco Neighborhood Emergency Response Team was barely systematic. I tried to distill some good elements like the bright green color and slab serif t ypeface from the old visual. For the purpose to promote NERT into more communit y, I redesigned the logo identit y and chose a heav y weight sanserif t ypeface for its visual system to locate the personalit y of NERT. I brought tangerine into its color palet te which creates a high contrast with the bright green. The new bold and vibrant impression symbolized the dynamic and sense of aler tness of NERT, but also for the purpose to promote NERT into more neighborhood communities, I design a "hand in hand" pat tern to show the power of unite in a friendly st yle.

OBJECTIVE Design three paperback covers which have a cohesive look as a set. Use only three spot colors and adhere to other restric tions to design the book covers with a t ypographic approach.

APPROACH I chose three books from dif ferent authors and genres, but which have af fec ted me profoundly in my life. With the unif ying visual st yle as a book set, I used three dif ferent symbols, spot colors and t ypefaces to distill the spirit of each book.

OBJECTIVE From Material to Social connec tion, nowadays people have dif ferent connec tions of obsessions in our daily life. We waste so many time and energy on things which consume us but bring nothing good to us. But like any kind of addic tions or bad habits, it truly hard for us to get rid of a thing or a habit we get used to it for a long time. It is a challenge to maintain constant change in ever yday life. To maintain changing, this projec t aims to design a mobile app which is easy for us to record and analyze our life pat tern, break our bad habits step by step.

APPROACH For the purpose to design an app which focuses on changing people's life pat tern, I have done sur veys and inter view to get the ac tual database. With this information, I went throw the process of produc t design from analyzing information, set ting the user cases to protot ype the wireframe. The mobile app aims to help people get rid of bad habits in an easier process, so I made ef for t in simplif ying the user inter face.
