JODDIEGLEASON Head Coach 9th Season

Joddie Gleason enters her ninth season at the helm of the Humboldt State’s women’s basketball program and led the 2011-12 women to a 19-8 overall finish (15-7 conference), including upsetting the No. 1 team, UC San Diego, by handing the Tritons their first loss of the season and breaking a 26-game winning streak. Following a nationwide search, Gleason was selected as the ninth head women’s basketball coach at Humboldt State University on April 22, 2004. In her eight years at HSU, Gleason has amassed a 140-87 overall mark and is 102-67 in league contests (81-47 in the CCAA and 21-15 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference). Her .617 winning percentage is by far the best in school history. During her first season heading the Lumberjack squad, Gleason compiled a 12-15 overall record and a 9-9 conference mark, much improved from the previous season’s 4-23 overall record. The eight-win improvement was the 12th best reversal among NCAA Division II women’s basketball programs.

6

The Lumberjacks took another step forward during Gleason’s second year at the helm of the program (2005-06), compiling a 17-11 overall record and a NCAA Division II West Region playoff berth, the second postseason appearance in HSU women’s basketball history, and the first in 11 seasons. Gleason led the 2006-07 Jacks to a 17-10 overall and a 12-10 CCAA record. She coached two all-conference and one all-region (award-winning) athletes. In 2008-09, Humboldt State enjoyed its finest season in the history of the program. Records were set for overall wins, with 24, and conference wins, with 16. In addition, two players earned first-team all-conference honors and one athlete was twice honored as an All-America selection. The Lumberjacks finished with an overall record of 20-11, 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, in 2009-10. After finishing in a tie for fourth place in the conference, the Jacks won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was the team’s third NCAA Division II West Regional birth in the last five years—just the fourth in school history. During Gleason’s eight years as head coach, she has shaped three conference Newcomer of the Year honorees, four West Region award winners, three All-America and eleven All-Conference athletes.

2012-13 Humboldt State Women’s Basketball Guide

Prior to coming to Humboldt State, Gleason served as the head coach at Butte College in Oroville. Under her direction, Butte College compiled a record of 117-45 over five seasons. She guided the Roadrunners to two appearances in the California Community College Elite Eight, also taking her team to the Sweet Sixteen on two other occasions. During her playing career, Gleason—who was inducted into Chico State’s hall of fame in the fall of 2004—became the school’s alltime scorer and earned All-American honors. She was named Northern California Athletic Conference Player of the Year following her senior season as well as earning the league’s Academic Athlete of the Year award. Following graduation from Chico State in 1993, with a B.A. in Liberal Studies, Gleason served as the Wildcats’ assistant coach from 1993-96. She also coached and taught in the Colusa Unified School District from 1996-99. Gleason earned a multiple subjects teaching credential and completed her Master of Arts in Physical Education, both from Chico State, in 2000. She and her husband, Skip, welcomed their first child, Raimee, on July 27, 2010.

SKIPGLEASON Assistant Coach 6th Season

Skip Gleason enters his sixth season as Humboldt State’s assistant women’s basketball coach after joining the program on Aug. 16, 2007. Gleason’s duties include recruiting, video breakdown, post development, working with the defense, and running camps and clinics. In the 2009-10 season, Gleason helped guide the Lumberjacks to a 20-11 overall record. The team went 14-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which was good for a tie for fourth place. The Lumberjacks won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional, where they went 1-1. It was the second time in his three years that the Jacks qualified for the tournament. The 2008-09 team finished 24-8 overall and 16-4 in the CCAA and second place in conference. Under his guidance Brittney Taylor, who graduated last year, earned the 2009-2010 Division II Bulletin Preseason All-America and Daktronics AllAmerica honors. She earned first-team All-CCAA honors each of the last two year. Her career marks of 1,100 points, 526 rebounds, 424 field goals and 242 free throws are good for fifth, eighth, sixth and sixth respectively on the programs all-time list. Her 460 points, 187 field goals and 107 free throws last season were good for fifth, fourth and sixth on the HSU single-season list. Before coming to Humboldt State, Gleason spent two years as the head coach at College of the Redwoods, turning the men’s basketball program around, going 15-16 overall in 2005-06, an eight win improvement from the previous season. In 2006-07, the Corsairs finished 19-13, claiming their first outright conference championship in school history and advancing to the second round of the state playoffs. Gleason was named the Golden Valley Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Gleason’s coaching career began at Colusa High School where he headed the varsity girls’ program from 1999-2004, collecting one Northern Section Division IV Championship, two league championships and a handful of Northern Section, Appeal Democrat and Tri-Counties Coach of the Year honors. In 2004-05, Gleason served as a volunteer assistant for the Lumberjack men’s basketball program, helping with summer camp organization, recruiting, on-court instruction and academic progress. Gleason and his wife Joddie, the Lumberjacks head women’s basketball coach, welcomed their first child, Raimee, on July 27, 2010.

DANCOLLEN Athletic Director

During Collen’s tenure as Athletic Director, the Lumberjack scholarship fund has quadrupled, providing educational opportunities to a diverse population of student-athletes. Those same students have brought success to the court, fields and track, entertaining a supportive community that has generously contributed to fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships. Collen’s success is rooted in vast administrative experience that includes 21 years as director of Humboldt State’s Center Activities. He has also served a variety of non-profit organizations, including the management of the Arcata Community Pool and as past president of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber honored Collen for his achievements, naming him Business Leader of the Year. Collen’s understanding of the coaching realm stems from his previous roles at the high school, college and United States Volleyball Association levels since 1977. He served as the Lumberjacks head volleyball coach for four seasons from 1989 to 1992 and compiled a career record of 83-44, including a 31-7 single season record in 1990. He was an assistant coach for the HSU women’s volleyball team and the head coach of the men’s club team from 1977-79. Previously, Collen was the head coach of College of the Redwoods in 1981 and also coached high school and numerous nationally-ranked USVBA teams. 2012-13OUTLOOK The time has come once again for the Humboldt State women’s basketball team to rise and get ready for a new season. After being left out of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. II West Region selection last year, the Jacks get the chance to start fresh and put their destiny in their own hands as they open the 2012-13 season this weekend. “We’re excited to open up,” said head coach Joddie Gleason. “We’ve been beating up on ourselves so it’ll be nice to put our hard work to the test against Academy of Art and Dominican University of California this week. Both of those teams will provide good challenges for us.” HSU heads down to Cal State East Bay for the California Collegiate Athletic Association/Pacific West Challenge tournament, where they will face AAU on Friday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. and DUC on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. “This early in the year it’s hard to focus on what everyone else will bring,” said Gleason. “We’re more focused on getting ourselves ready and on the same page.” With a majority of the team (nine of 15) new to the system, the Jacks have been busy learning and putting into practice the Lumberjack way of life. “There is so much teaching and learning that has to take place in such a short amount of time,” said Gleason. “Not only does the team have to learn the system, they have to be able to play it at a high level. It’s what we’re accustomed to.” Six returners, led by captains Caitie Richards, Elle Anderson and Lisa Petty, will help get the newcomers on the same page, working under one common theme of RISE: Relentless Intensity Sacrifice Emotion. “I feel like our core group of returners are doing a good job of being leaders and holding people accountable while being positive,” said Gleason. “Our team works really hard whether they’re in the weight room, doing conditioning running or at practice. They’re all committed and competing.”

averaging 13.6 points per game to put her in the top 10 of the conference’s leading scorers. Kime saw limited action due to injuries but is feeling healthy this season and will see action at either the guard or forward position. Jessica Johnson, Ali Orlich and Jain Tuey are all newcomers to the program and will help try to fill out the guard positions once they learn the system and gain some confidence for the Green and Gold. Forwards Kime, Tiana Maxwell and Amanda Kunst will each look to play a key part in the Lumberjack offense from the four spot. All three have some experience as forwards, but are mostly converted guards with Kunst having a little more experience at the post. With the HSU system, the post players will have the option to play inside and outside, which benefits from each of the three players’ experience as guards. Centers Returners Anderson and Meghan Ringer, along with freshman Sumayyah Wiggins, will compete to get in the mix at center for the Jacks. Anderson saw limited action last season, but is looking strong and fit as the season begins. Gleason is impressed with the hard work she put in the offseason to get in great shape and is excited to see what she can bring to the table. Ringer, who transferred midseason last year, has also been working hard to learn Gleason’s style of play and enters the new season with confidence. Gleason is confident Ringer will play a key role in the Lumberjacks’ success.

Guards One of the biggest holes Gleason and her coaching staff has had to fill is the point guard position after losing a key player in Kayla Williams to graduation. Since the position can be tough to learn in such a short amount of time, the coaching staff switched Richards from the 2 spot to the 1 spot to “help bridge the gap” and have been impressed with how well Richards has transitioned. Petty and Kelly Kime are two returning guards who will look to fill up a lot of minutes in the other guard spots. Petty, who received All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors after the 2011-12 season, led the Jacks in points last year,

Waiting game doesn’t fare well for Lumberjacks After losing to Chico State in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament, and not being able to control its own fate by winning the tournament, Humboldt State had to wait until the Regional Pool was announced Sunday night. The results didn’t fare well for the Jacks as they were not one of the eight teams moving on. Five CCAA teams will continue on further into the postseason, led by Cal State Monterey Bay, who claimed the automatic berth from the West Region after winning the CCAA Tournament Championship. UC San Diego, Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles round out the other four CCAA teams extending their seasons. Humboldt State ends its season at 19-8 overall and finished tied for second in the CCAA with a 15-7 conference record. For five seniors, the bad news is especially heartbreaking as it concludes their collegiate career. Bree Halsey, Kayla Williams, Whitney Howard, Molly Todd and Lexxi Price had a good run in their green and white Humboldt State jerseys and leave behind difficult shoes to fill. LUMBERJACKSAAC

Michael Powell, Alex Rump, Jacob Bechtel, Joe Ostini, Alizah Rotman and Brittainy Chown sort through clothing donations.

The mission of the Humboldt State University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletic integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administrations, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. HSU SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each year the HSU SAAC’s primary fundraising activity has revolved around the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the MakeA-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980. HSU SAAC members also participate in local community and campus outreach efforts such as Read Across America, Betty Chinn’s Blue Angels, Food For People and Socks for Soldiers.
