STEVEKINDER Head Coach 3rd Season

It didn’t take long for Steve Kinder to begin his own legacy. After teaming up with retired head coach Tom Wood for 20 years, Kinder stepped into his mentor’s role in 2010-11, and promptly directed his team to a 26-4 record and the NCAA postseason. The Lumberjacks also claimed the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season championship and ranked as high as No. 3 in the national poll, and No. 2 in

6

the West Region poll. For an encore, Kinder guided the 2011-12 Humboldt State men’s basketball to a 22-8 record, claiming the CCAA Tournament title and earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships From his first rebound wearing the green and gold, to identifying and recruiting the talent that brought HSU a regional title, Steve Kinder has always been a true Lumberjack. Following his successful debut in 2010-11, Kinder became the Collegeinsider.com’s recipient of the Clarence Gaines award honoring the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. He was also named National

2012 Humboldt State Men’s Basketball Guide

Association of Basketball Coaches West District Coach of the Year and California Collegiate Athletics Association Coach of the Year. During Kinder’s tenure as an assistant, he bore a variety of responsibilities, including evaluation and recruitment of student-athletes, directing the popular Lumberjack Basketball Camp, and sharing practice and game plan duties. His hands-on approach helped make the Jacks regular participants in the NCAA postseason, including a West Region championship in 2004. Kinder is a former HSU basketball player who was a member of the 1984-85 NCAC championship team. He previously served as a graduate assistant coach for the Lumberjacks (1986-88) and was also an assistant basketball coach at U.S. International University. Kinder earned his B.S. in physical eduation from HSU in 1985 and completed his M.A. at HSU in 1988. Prior to his hiring as an assistant coach at HSU, Kinder was the head coach at Oceanside High School in San Diego (1989-90). As an athlete at Humboldt State, Kinder excelled in both basketball and track and field. He was a contributing starter for most of his time on the basketball court and still holds a place on the Lumberjacks’ top 10 javelin throwing list in track and field. During the past 12 years, Kinder helped recruit Lumberjack stars including Fred Hooks, Austin Nichols, Mark White, Jeremiah Ward, Cy Vandermeer, Grayson Moyer, Devin Peal, Kevin Johnson, Zac Tiedeman, Brian Morris and Randy Hunter. In addition to coaching, Kinder has worked as an instructor in the kinesiology department and taught a popular class at HSU on fishing in the Northwest. He also taught a life skills class for new students. Steve has three children — Emily, Madeleine and Claire.

CARLNASH Assistant Coach 1st Season

Hired in the fall of 2012, Carl Nash brings 30 years of coaching experience at a variety of levels that will help seamlessly fill the important role of No. 1 assistant. Nash, a native of Del Norte, Colo., most recently served as associate head coach for the NBA Developmental League’s select team that played against the Dominican Republic in June. Prior to that commitment, he coached the Al Rayyan professional team in Qatar, and has enjoyed successful stints as an assistant coach at Division I programs Auburn, Clemson and Georgia Southern. He also guided winning squads as head coach at NAIA-affiliated Spring Hill College and Chipola Junior College. Prior to moving to his role with Qatar overseas, Nash served for 10 years as associate head coach at Georgia Southern, where along with his on-floor responsibilities he worked as the program’s primary recruiter and scheduler. In his three seasons at Chipola Junior College (Marianna, Fla.), Nash posted a 59-29 record and coached three consecutive Panhandle Conference MVP’s. He also served as the school’s athletic director. Previously, Nash worked two years as an assistant at Auburn and one at Clemson, serving as chief on-the-floor aid, recruiter, leader of the teams’ preseason conditioning program and director of the basketball camps. While Nash was at Auburn, the Tigers advanced to the NIT twice and had a pair of winning seasons. He also helped guide Clemson to an NIT quarterfinal appearance in 1994. Nash coached at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., from 1986-1993, averaging 20 wins a season from 1988-93 while handling head coach and athletic director duties. He led Spring Hill to the NAIA District 30 championship in both 1992 and 1993 and was named District 30 Coach-of-the-Year each of those seasons. Nash’s 1993 squad claimed the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference title and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Tournament in both ‘92 and ‘93. Following the ‘92 season, he was named the Alabama Small College Coach-of-theYear and received the Alabama Basketball Coaches Association Award. In ‘93, he was selected the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year. At Spring Hill, Nash coached five athletes who were named NAIA Scholar Athletes and had a 100 percent graduation rate. He also tutored two NAIA All-Americans and five of his players went on to play professional basketball. He left the school as Spring Hill’s winningest coach. Nash also served as an assistant coach at Spring Hill for three seasons (198485, 1986-87 and 1987-88). In 1985-86, he was head coach for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He guided the team to a 27-7 record, won Coach-of-the-Year honors, and captured the Ramadan Game Championship. Nash began his coaching career as an assistant basketball coach at Farmington (N.M.) High School in 1982-83 before becoming the assistant basketball and baseball coach at Durango (Colo.) High School for the 1983-84 season. A 1982 Fort Lewis College graduate, Nash attended Colorado State in 1978. He earned his master’s degree in sports science from the United States Sports Academy in 1985.

DANCOLLEN Athletic Director

During Collen’s tenure as Athletic Director, the Lumberjack scholarship fund has quadrupled, providing educational opportunities to a diverse population of student-athletes. Those same students have brought success to the court, fields and track, entertaining a supportive community that has generously contributed to fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships. Collen’s success is rooted in vast administrative experience that includes 21 years as director of Humboldt State’s Center Activities. He has also served a variety of non-profit organizations, including the management of the Arcata Community Pool and as past president of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber honored Collen for his achievements, naming him Business Leader of the Year. Collen’s understanding of the coaching realm stems from his previous roles at the high school, college and United States Volleyball Association levels since 1977. He served as the Lumberjacks head volleyball coach for four seasons from 1989 to 1992 and compiled a career record of 83-44, including a 31-7 single season record in 1990. He was an assistant coach for the HSU women’s volleyball team and the head coach of the men’s club team from 1977-79. Previously, Collen was the head coach of College of the Redwoods in 1981 and also coached high school and numerous nationally-ranked USVBA teams. 2012-13OUTLOOK Last year, the Jacks didn’t open the season until Nov. 14. Two years ago, they began on Nov. 13, and in 2010, the season didn’t begin until Nov. 20. But that was the past, and only six practices and one scrimmage of preparation behind them, they begin 2012-13 on Oct. 25. “For the coaches, we feel a sense of urgency that has us forcefeeding the system to the players in the first week,” Kinder said. “We’ll put it on the table Thursday and see what they digest.” Despite the steep learning curve, Kinder expects his players to be ready to answer their first challenge. “They’re not polished, they’re not playing at a high level yet,” he said. “But it’s game week, and they’re excited and ready to go. When the ball is tipped, the basketball instincts will take over.” Still highly-respected despite the loss of all five starters, the Lumberjacks will nonetheless have to prove themselves a worthy contender for the CCAA title and beyond. They’ll try to do so with a group of top recruits, mixing in key players who contributed off the bench a year ago. Guards Starting at the point guard position, occupied by D.J. Broome most of 2011-12, three players are being considered for court time. Though he saw limited playing time last year, returning sophomore Nathan Hentley has the advantage of being familiar with Lumberjack basketball. Also in the mix for a starter’s role are Cody Kale, a 6-3 junior transfer from CSU Bakersfield, and Brandon Woods, a 6-2 sophomore from Riverside and Citrus JC. Filling the shooting guard role are two capable returners, junior Austin Bryan and sophomore Ethan Dillard. Coming off the bench,

Bryan averaged 8.9 points per game a year ago, and knocked down 45 3-pointers. As a freshman, Dillard achieved his team’s best 3-point shooting percentage at .402. The “3” or small forward position is key to the Jacks’ success, Kinder said, and the bulk of that burden lies on newcomer Deaundray Robinson. A 6-5 transfer from Yuba JC, Robinson has the ability to score, along with the quickness and athleticism that will fit in nicely with the Jacks’ pressing defense. “Deaundray is a very good defender. He’s long, and covers a lot of ground,” Kinder said. “He’s the kind of player that can take us from being a good team to being a special team.” Forwards In the post, two new seniors will share the workload. Aaron Chamberlain, a 6-7 transfer from CSU San Marcos, and Alex Williams, a 6-7 senior who most recently played at San Diego State, are both capable rebounders and explosive scorers. “They can cover a lot of ground quickly,” Kinder said. “They’re still learning our system, so we need to be patient with them.” Another option down low or in a variety of roles is returning senior Darren Turpin. As an undersized post, he gave the Jacks’ valuable minutes off the bench last year. A roster laden with new players brings with it somewhat unknown potential, but a few of the Jacks’ returners are also showing that they’re coming into their own. Greg Leslie, a 6-9 junior post, and Tyler Brown, a 6-2 senior guard, have been impressing the coaching staff in practice, displaying a knowledge of the system that helps stabilize the team.

LUMBERJACKSAAC

Michael Powell, Alex Rump, Jacob Bechtel, Joe Ostini, Alizah Rotman and Brittainy Chown sort through clothing donations.

The mission of the Humboldt State University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletic integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administrations, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. HSU SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each year the HSU SAAC’s primary fundraising activity has revolved around the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the MakeA-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980. HSU SAAC members also participate in local community and campus outreach efforts such as Read Across America, Betty Chinn’s Blue Angels, Food For People and Socks for Soldiers.
