2012OUTLOOK Head coach Sue Woodstra isn’t new to the game of volleyball— she even has a silver Olympic medal to prove it—but this season she has quite a few new additions. Seven newcomers and two new coaches will need to learn Woodstra’s ways in hopes of a successful season, something Woodstra has no doubt can happen. After a successful camping trip, complete with heat and meteor showers, an even mix of returning and new players started their first day of intense practice on the volleyball court in Lumberjack Arena on Monday afternoon. After taking the time while camping to start getting to know all the new faces on the team, the Jacks came to practice eager for the fresh season to start. “We have as many new players as returners, so it will be important for us to get to know each other very quickly,” said Woodstra. “We’ll have to try to define everyone’s role that will make us the best team possible. We’ll be learning a lot about each other throughout the season, but so far, I like the chemistry of the group to be able to fulfill those expectations.” One of the concerns Woodstra has heading into camp is her small number of players. Unlike some seasons, Woodstra doesn’t have the numbers in many of the positions this year. “We have a small group this year,” said Woodstra. “Some positions don’t have great depth to them so it’ll be key for us to stay healthy and injury-free in every position.” Coaching Staff Woodstra enters her 10th season at the helm of the volleyball team, hoping to build on last year’s 8-18 finish. The Jacks proved they could compete with some of the top teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, beating Chico State on the road and sweeping both Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills, but want to move higher in the conference rankings. “I want this group to play as a team, to be competitive in every match and to learn something every time we step out on the court,” said Woodstra. “In the past, we’ve competed really well until right at the end of sets, winning some, but letting too many slip to our opponents. That’s a specific area we’ll work to improve on.” Two new coaches join Woodstra on the bench and at practice to help make the Jacks a bigger threat in the CCAA. Chad Nelson takes on the assistant coach position after long-time assistant James Kealilio stepped down. Nelson brings coaching experience at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and Division III levels, as well as National Christian College Athletic Association playing and coaching experience. Prior to Humboldt State, Nelson coached at the University of Iowa, Illinois State, Illinois College and his alma mater Lincoln Christian University.

Jason Crowley makes his NCAA coaching debut as a volunteer assistant coach. Previously, Crowley coached the HSU men’s club volleyball program for two years. Originally from Chula Vista, Crowley played volleyball at Grossmont College in San Diego and was an All-California Interscholastic Federation first team selection in high school. Position Breakdown Liberos Three Lumberjacks will compete for the starting libero spot, with Tiffany McCray being the only veteran in the mix. McCray saw limited action in 2011, but enters her third season playing for the Jacks. Two transfers, Megan Bowen (junior transfer from Shasta College) and Sarah Johnson (sophomore transfer from College of the Redwoods), will also vie for game action.
Middle Blockers One of the positions the Jacks lack depth in is the middle blocker spot. Just two veterans return to work together at the net, senior Allison Drobish and sophomore Merry Ellen Ackema. Last year, Drobish led HSU in blocks, tallying 110 total blocks, 24 of which were block solos. Ackema rounded out second with 70 blocks as a true freshman. Outside Hitters The outside hitters make up the majority of the team, led by key returners Ashley Neale and Alexa Rosendale. In 2011, Neale made 122 kills, 204 digs and 49 blocks, while Rosendale picked up 210 kills, 241 digs and 24 service aces. The duo will likely resume their starting positions, but have several other teammates looking to get playing action. Veteran Channel Washington knows what is expected when it comes to Lumberjack volleyball as she enters her third season playing for the Jacks. Three freshman, led by Danielle Carlson (from Gaviota, Calif.), will look to add some much needed depth to the roster. Annie Allen (Seattle, Wash.) and Symone Hayden (Fresno, Calif.) hope to contribute in their debut collegiate seasons. Ashley Owen, a junior transfer from Indiana State, brings Div. I experience to the mix, but will have to sit out this season due to transfer rules. Setters Two young players make up the setters pool for the Jacks. Sarah Wilber returns for her second season with the Jacks after seeing limited action off the bench as a freshman. Kelci Renshaw, a fouryear letterwinner at Kamehameha Schools from Nanakuli, Hawaii, was helped her team claim three State Championships and hopes to bring that championship edge for the Jacks.

The mission of the Humboldt State University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletic integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administrations, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. HSU SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each year the HSU SAAC’s primary fundraising activity has revolved around the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the MakeA-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980. HSU SAAC members also participate in local community and campus outreach efforts such as Read Across America, Betty Chinn’s Blue Angels, Food For People and Socks for Soldiers.
