COACHINGSTAFF 5
CJJOHNSON Head Coach 4th Season
Building on an impressive record of success coaching both men’s and women’s programs, Christian Johnson will enter his fourth season as Humboldt State’s men’s and women’s head soccer coach in the fall of 2012. Johnson looks to build after leading the soccer teams to a collective 8-26-2 finish in 2011, with Zach Hammond earning All-CCAA honors on the men’s side. In 2010, the HSU men finished with a 4-11-3 overall record and produced two All-CCAA players: Tim Haden and Josh Suggs. Suggs went on to further his career and was the first Lumberjack soccer player to sign a professional contract, becoming a member of Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
6
The women finished 4-13-1 in 2010, with Sarah Nakamoto earning All-CCAA honors. Johnson earned his 100th career victory as a women’s head coach in the 2009 season-opening 3-1 win over Western Oregon. Johnson is the former head coach of the women’s programs at Cal State San Bernardino and Azusa Pacific. He helped lead the Azusa Pacific women’s program to a 24-0-1 record and a national championship in 1998, and was selected as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Coach of the Year. From 1997-99, his Azuza Pacific teams compiled a 57-9-3 overall record, and gained a Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title, along with the National Championship, under their belts. His athletes earned two national Player of Year awards, 13 All-American selections, 18 All-GSAC honors, three GSAC Player of the Year namings and eight All-America scholar recognitions. In addition, three of his players played in the
2012 Humboldt State Women’s Soccer Guide
Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), the first all-women’s soccer league where every athlete was a paid professional. In four years at Cal State San Bernardino, 2000-03, Johnson’s women’s teams were 42-32-7. As a member of the CCAA his athletes earned 14 all-conference and four NSCAA All-West Region honors. In the 2003 season, Johnson’s last at CSU San Bernardino, his Coyote women’s team was 11-8-2 and qualified for the NCAA West regional for the first time in the 15-year history of the program. While pursuing other opportunities from 2004-08, he led the Pahrump (Nev.) High School boy’s team to the state semifinal game in 2004 and was named the Nevada 3A Boys Coach of the Year. The following year his team competed in the state championship game. Johnson attended and played soccer at Azusa Pacific from 1989 through 1991 before finishing his collegiate career at Point Loma Nazarene in 1993. A keeper at Azuza Pacific, he still holds the school record for saves in a game, 21 vs. Cal State Bakersfield (1989). At Point Loma Nazarene, Johnson earned the team’s 1993 Most Valuable Player award after posting five shutouts among his 11 wins. His 540 consecutive shutout minutes rank No. 1 on the programs all-time list and his 152 saves that year are second on

the single-season list and rank sixth on the schools career list. The team finished second in the Golden State Athletic Conference and played in the District Three (Far West) semi-finals. Johnson graduated from Point Loma Nazarene in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. In 1996, he earned his mater’s degree from Azusa Pacific in education. Johnson and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of three daughters, Sydney, Kendall and Lyla.

ROLANDDEMOMBYNES Assistant Coach 3rd Season
Roland Demombynes returns to assist the women’s soccer team for his third season, bringing a wealth of soccer knowledge. The Seattle native attended Humboldt State and graduated with a degree in zoology in 2011. During his undergrad, Demombynes was a stellar midfielder for the Lumberjacks and earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) honors. He tallied a total of 19 goals, including 5 game-winners, and 7 assists in his collegiate career. When not out at College Creek Field helping the soccer teams, Demombynes likes to travel and explore the outdoors. He has also played on the National Premier Soccer League’s North Coast Tsunami F.C. squad, based in Eureka.

Prior to coaching, Garon was a four-year starter in the nets for the Jacks during the 1998-2001 seasons. He currently holds records in the Men’s Soccer Record Book, including: No. 5 for a 1.20 goals against average in a single season (2000), No. 7 for 5.5 shutouts in a single season (1998), No. 7 for 1.52 career goals against average, and No. 3 for 17 career shutouts. SAWYERGORDON Assistant Coach 1st Season
Sawyer Gordon joined the Humboldt State Women’s Soccer coaching staff after finishing her collegiate playing career in 2011. Gordon was a key member of the Lumberjack defense, appearing in 18 games and starting 15 as a senior. She took four shots on the defense by attacking out of the back, something she will look to pass on to the team as she begins her coaching career. The Granada Hills native is finishing her undergraduate degree in kinesiology at Humboldt State, looking to graduate in the spring. When not helping the team at College Creek Field, Gordon enjoys sewing and hanging out with friends.

DANCOLLEN Athletic Director
During Collen’s tenure as Athletic Director, the Lumberjack scholarship fund has quadrupled, providing educational opportunities to a diverse population of student-athletes. Those same students have brought success to the court, fields and track, entertaining a supportive community that has generously contributed to fundraising efforts and corporate sponsorships. Collen’s success is rooted in vast administrative experience that includes 21 years as director of Humboldt State’s Center Activities. He has also served a variety of non-profit organizations, including the management of the Arcata Community Pool and as past president of the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber honored Collen for his achievements, naming him Business Leader of the Year. He served as the Lumberjacks head volleyball coach for four seasons from 1989 to 1992 and compiled a career record of 83-44, including a 31-7 single season record in 1990. He was an assistant coach for the HSU women’s volleyball team and the head coach of the men’s club team from 1977-79. Previously, Collen was the head coach of College of the Redwoods in 1981 and also coached high school and numerous nationally-ranked USVBA teams. 2012OUTLOOK In the beginning of the season last year, Humboldt State had a lot of youth join the roster, outnumbering the returners 16 to 11. This year, however, 18 returners will help teach nine newcomers head coach C.J. Johnson and his coaching staff’s style of play—even if the underclassmen still outnumber the upperclassmen 20 to seven. “We’re excited to see what a year of progress will show for all of those freshmen from last year’s adjustment period,” said Johnson. “We also think this incoming class will make a difference on the field. We have a good amount of depth that we haven’t had in the past.” The depth was prominent to Johnson after the first day of practice, impressing Johnson and his coaching staff. From a coaching standpoint, depth can be a pro and con since everyone could potentially be an impact player, but there are only 11 spots to fill at a time. “As of right now, it’ll be difficult to pick starters,” said Johnson. “I expect our practices to be much more competitive this season since everyone will be battling for playing time.” Redshirts, who sat out last fall due to injuries and other reasons are stepping up to show they’re ready to compete, will not only have to battle against players who gained valuable competitive experience during the season, but fresh blood eager to make a name for themselves. Savannah Havranek and Elle Reid have already made an impression and Johnson believes the pair could impact the team in a very positive manner, but don’t have a prominent role quite yet. “There are a few players we’re looking at to step in right away, but there’s still a lot to be determined,” said Johnson. “We have a couple freshmen coming off injuries that we’ll be excited to have at full strength.”
Position Breakdown Goalkeepers The Jacks return all three goalkeepers from last year: Jennie Paugh, Amber Woolcock and Kelly Lukas. Paugh claimed the starting spot in the beginning of the season, but had to sit out a majority of the season due to a knee injury. Woolcock took over in the net for HSU and picked up 59 saves and two shutouts as a freshman. Lukas still has four years of eligibility after taking a redshirt season.
Defenders Three of last year’s starting defenders graduated, leaving some big holes for the Jacks to fill. Carly Kolpin, who can play on both sides of the ball, started a majority of the 2011 season in the back four and will provide some much needed leadership. Kelsey DeCarlo, Carissa Chase and Erica McMullen all have potential to fill a spot in the back line, along with sophomore Allie Swanson, who saw some action in the defense as a freshman. Midfielders Bre Taylor and Chelsea LaRue make up twothirds of last year’s starting midfield returning for the 2012 season and will look to hold onto their roles in the center of the lineup. Senior Terri Tigert saw action in the middle as a reserve last year and brings a lot of experience and leadership to the pitch as she fights for a starting spot. Havranek and Reid could also find themselves a home in the middle or possibly in the attack. Forwards Tamra James leads the attack for the Jacks offensively. Last year, James scored two goals and had two assists, using her speed and tenacity to be a threat for other opponents. Lizzie Mitchell, Aliya McCarthy, Maddie Null and Colette Behen all return as possible starters in HSU’s offense, each with an ability to find the back of the net. Freshman Emily Huska will also look to get some action in her collegiate debut.
Coaching Staff Johnson returns for his fourth season at the helm of the women’s soccer program and is accompanied by three familiar faces. Former HSU athletes themselves, Roland Demombynes, Colin Garon and Sawyer Gordon will help guide the Jacks to a higher California Collegiate Athletic Association finish.

The mission of the Humboldt State University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, maintaining athletic integrity, acting as a liaison between student-athletes and the administrations, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. HSU SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each year the HSU SAAC’s primary fundraising activity has revolved around the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. It is the largest wish-granting charity in the world, with 76 chapters in the United States and its territories and 27 international affiliates on 5 continents. With the help of generous donors and more than 25,000 volunteers, the MakeA-Wish Foundation has granted more than 110,000 wishes to children around the world since 1980. HSU SAAC members also participate in local community and campus outreach efforts such as Read Across America, Betty Chinn’s Blue Angels, Food For People and Socks for Soldiers.
