Redstone Arsenal:
38,000 Acres | 41,000 Jobs Redstone Arsenal is a 38,000-acre federal campus for research & development, testing, engineering, training and the acquisition of Army materiel for more than 60 federal agencies and organizations. Redstone provides the highest level of technology development for national defense and space exploration. More than 41,800 people work on Redstone Arsenal, making it the single largest employment site in the State of Alabama. Over $100 billion in Federal Budget is managed on Redstone Arsenal. Roughly half of the Army’s weapons procurement budget is managed on Redstone Arsenal, including all US Army aviation systems, missile systems and missile defense systems. Approximately 85 percent of MDA’s operations are based in Huntsville Military activities in the area included the following organizations:
U.S. Army Materiel Command – AMC is an Army Major Command responsible for materiel readiness including technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection and sustainment. The Command’s missions range from development of weapon systems and research to maintenance and distribution of parts and supplies.
U.S. Army Aviation & Missile Command – AMCOM provides support to joint warfighters and allies to ensure aviation and missile system readiness for combat operations. The Command is responsible for the development, acquisition and fielding of aviation and missile systems and the integration of aviation and missile technology.
U.S. Army Futures Command – Future Vertical Lift Cross Functional Team (CFT); Long Range Precision Fires CFT – CFTs for the Army’s next generation of vertical lift and long-range precision fires are located at Redstone Arsenal.
U.S. Army Security Assistance Command – USASAC supports the national security strategy through the management of Army security assistance programs including annual foreign military sales of more than $10 billion to approximately 140 allied countries, friendly nations and multinational organizations. U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center – CCDEV (formerly known as AMRDEC) is the Army’s focal point for providing research, development and engineering technology and services for aviation and missile platforms. CCDEV manages and conducts research, exploratory and advanced development, and provides one-stop lifecycle engineering and scientific support for aviation and missile systems and UAV platforms.
Program Executive Office - Missiles & Space – The PEO Missiles and Space provides centralized management for all Army tactical and air defense missile programs and selected Army space programs. The PEO was established in January 2005 with the merger of the PEO Air, Space and Missile Defense and the PEO Tactical Missiles.
Program Executive Office - Aviation – The PEO Aviation is the Army manager responsible for providing overall direction and guidance for the development, acquisition, testing, product improvement and fielding of Army aviation systems including the Apache Helicopter, Cargo Helicopter, Utility Helicopter, Unmanned Aircraft System and Armed Scout Helicopter. Redstone Test Center – RTC specializes in line-of-sight missile and rocket testing, guidance system testing, optical and electro optical systems, air-armament component tests and electromagnetic environmental effects testing of aircraft systems. RTC is the designated DOD lighting effects tester for explosive ordnance and munitions. RTC also tests and certifies all modifications to the Amy aviation fleet.
U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command /Army Strategic Command – SMDC/ ARSTRAT is responsible for developing the Army’s missile defense systems including support of space and ground based midcourse defense and assuring the Army’s access to and utilization of space assets in the execution of their mission. Missile Defense Agency – MDA is a Department of Defense agency that facilitates the development and integration of multi-service capabilities into seamless theater and national missile defense systems, including the new hypersonic project office. Defense Intelligence Agency - Missile & Space Intelligence Center – MSIC is an intelligence organization charged with producing scientific and technological intelligence on adversary surface-to-air missiles and ballistic missile systems and directed energy systems. This intelligence includes characteristics, capabilities and limitations of foreign military systems. Army Contracting Command – ACC supports the warfighter worldwide through the acquisition of goods and services vital to the soldier’s mission and well-being. In fiscal year 2009, the ACC was responsible for 281,590 contracting actions that totaled over $96 billion. The Command Headquarters relocated to Redstone Arsenal in 2011.
Non-Military activities located on Redstone Arsenal include: NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center – MSFC employs roughly 6,000 people and supports nearly 38,000 jobs nationally and a total economic output of nearly $7 billion. MSFC is developing the essential vehicle and technologies to achieve NASA’s human journey to Mars, it provides valuable contributions to the community, the state, the region, and the nation. Each year, MSFC creates significant economic impact by supporting thousands of jobs and investing millions of dollars in research and development, driving an innovationbased economy in Alabama and across the United States. Marshall manages the Space Launch System (SLS), the only vehicle that can launch astronauts on their way to Mars or other destinations beyond Earth orbit. FBI Terrorist Explosive Device Analytical Center – TEDAC is responsible for forensic analysis of all improvised explosive devices captured or reclaimed from the field, anywhere in the world. ATF National Center for Explosives Training and Research – NCETR provides training for bomb disposal technicians and 2-week school for identification of explosive products; blast mitigation techniques; remote handling; safe disposal techniques; and chemical precursor familiarization. Also provides training for sampling and testing techniques; mitigation techniques; evidence collection; scene documentation; remote handling; safe disposal techniques. NCETR is also the home for the ATF’s Advanced Fire and Arson Training Center.

The Alabama School of Cyber and Engineering, a statewide high school magnet, will open in Huntsville in 2020.
The Alabama Robotics Technology Park provides a technically trained workforce for automation and robotics; assists in the development of new robotics systems and technologies; and promotes the creation, growth, and expansion of companies through innovative technology solutions. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is home to Space Camp as well as Aviation, Robotics, and Cyber camps that serve more than 100,000 students a year.
Huntsville International Airport (HSV) is the largest commercial airport in North Alabama, serving more than 1.2 million passengers annually with 10 non-stop destinations. The International Intermodal Center, located in the Port of Huntsville Global Logistics Park, provides a single hub location specializing in receiving, transferring, storing, and distributing international and domestic cargo via air, rail, and highway. 7
