Numbers Kord Technologies awarded $44,824,528 Kord Technologies Inc., Huntsville, Ala., has been awarded a $44,824,528 costplus-fixed-fee contract for target system hardware support. The contract supports the Program Executive Officer for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation’s (PEO STRI) Targets Management Office (TMO) at Redstone Arsenal. Kord Technologies will provide engineering services, data base management, technical administrative support, and target system and component procurement for TMO to support targetry efforts at ranges in both the United States and Allied Nations. The five-year contract will provide realistic, inexpensive targets to Army, other Service, and Allied Nation users to support research and development, test and training tracking, live fire, and simulated live fire engagements at Department of Defense (DoD) ranges and military installations. Kord will also support testing requirements for multiple weapons systems, on-going development efforts and training missions. COLSA awarded $41,146,000 to support ARC COLSA Corp., Huntsville, Ala., is being awarded a $41,146,000 modification to indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract HQ0147-07-D-0002 and extend the ordering period for one year. The ceiling of the contract is increased from $422,997,725 to $464,143,725. Under this modification, COLSA Corp. will continue to provide design, operation, and support to the Advanced Research Center (ARC). The ARC is a major simulation facility supporting the Missile Defense Agency and an important asset in assisting the joint warfighter through analysis, experimentation and exercises. The work will be performed in Huntsville, Ala. The ordering period for this extension is Sept. 17, 2017 through Sept.16, 2018. Research, development, test and evaluation funds will be used to fund task orders under this contract. The Missile Defense Agency, Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is the contracting activity.

Camber Corp. awarded $25M contract Camber Corp., Huntsville, Alabama, now doing business as Huntington Ingalls Industries Technical Solutions, is being awarded a $25,195,736 indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-fixed-fee, multiple award contract to provide training services for tactical afloat shipboard, ashore and submarine command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. Support includes development and implementation of training solutions, scheduling of fleet training, and technical training equipment design and installation.

This is one of four multiple-award contracts; all awardees will have the opportunity to compete for task orders during the ordering period. This three-year contract includes two one-year option periods which, if exercised, would bring the overall, potential value of this contract to $42,836,537.

Work will be performed on ships and land sites worldwide, and work is expected to be completed September 2020. If options are exercised, work will continue through September 2022. No funds will be obligated at the time of award. Funding will be obligated via task orders as they are issued. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The types of funding to be obligated include operations and maintenance (Navy); other procurement (Navy); and research, development, test and evaluation (Navy).

This contract was competitively procured via a request for proposal published on the Federal Business Opportunities website and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command e-Commerce Central website. Nine offers were received and four were selected for award. Space and Navy Warfare Systems Center Pacific, San Diego, California, is the contracting activity (N66001-17-D-0214).

These services are in support of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division’s Aircraft Prototype Systems Division (APSD). The scope of this contract is to cover all phases of APSD projects from feasibility studies and concept development through prototype development, systems integration laboratory standup and testing concluding with production in limited quantities to meet test and evaluation, fleet evaluation or urgent fielding requirements. The estimated aggregate ceiling for all contracts is $486,952,035, with the companies having an opportunity to compete for individual orders. Work will be performed in Patuxent River, Maryland; and at contractor facilities, and is expected to be completed in September 2022. Funds are not being obligated at time of award, funds will be obligated on individual orders as they are issued. These contracts were competitively procured via an electronic request for proposals in two lots: Lot I, competitive unrestricted, and Lot II, competitive small business set-aside.

Seven proposals were received for Lot I; 10 proposals were received for Lot II. The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

QuantiTech awarded $39M for services range support QuantiTech, Inc., Huntsville, Ala., has been awarded a $39,557,675 modification (P00045) for technical and management advisory services range support. The contractor will provide additional diverse research, development, test, evaluation, and acquisition support services. Work will be performed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida; Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee; Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; Hill Air Force Base, Utah; Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; Joint Base Pearl HarborHickam, Hawaii; and Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, and is expected to be completed

Tyonek awarded $12,276,280 contract Tyonek Fabrication Corp., Madison, Ala., has been awarded a maximum $12,276,280 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for pilot display units.

This was a sole-source acquisition using justification Federal Acquisition Regulation 6.302-1(a)(2), only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy requirement. This is a one-year base contract with four one-year option periods. The maximum dollar amount is for the life of the contract. Chamber’s Economic Development Division Makes Critical New Hires Over the past two years, the Chamber’s workforce efforts have grown by leaps and bounds. Under Lyndsay Ferguson as Workforce Director, ASmartPlace.com was redesigned, the job site was revived, the wage & benefit survey was improved, and the State of the Schools and College and Career Fair events increased in size and scope. Extensive workforce recruitment support was offered to new and expanding companies, and the Chamber Foundation was brought out of hiatus. When Lyndsay accepted the role of President and CEO of Leadership Huntsville/ Madison County, it became apparent that her work had outgrown a single position.

Coupled with the Chamber’s desire to improve its business retention and expansion (BRE) program, the need for two distinct positions was clear. The Workforce Director position was modified to Bruton Workforce Development Director to focus on K-12, career awareness and the Chamber Foundation. Jill Bruton, recently relocated from Seattle, WA, was

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology hosts Immunogenomics Conference More than 150 leading researchers from around the world convened at HudsonAlpha for Biotechnology on October 2-4, 2017 for the fifth annual Immunogenomics Conference.

Immunogenomics lies at the intersection of immunology and genomics and explores the ways in which the human genome interacts with disease. The conference provided attendees the opportunity to engage in science discussions, network with experts and discover what’s next in the field of immunogenomics and how it will help shape the future of human health.

Topics of discussion included the microbiome, autoimmunity, immunotherapy, viral threats and more.

Torch celebrates Freedom Center opening with large “$15K for 15” gifts Torch Technologies and its employee-owners believe in giving back. They proved it in a big way at the company’s 15th anniversary celebration on September 22.

Calling it “15 for 15,” Torch awarded 15 grants each worth $15,000 to local nonprofit organizations (shown above). These were: EarlyWorks Museums, Downtown Rescue Mission, HEALS, Huntsville Hospital Foundation, Kids to Love, Community Foundation of Huntsville/Madison County, Boys & Girls Club, Still Serving Veterans, The ARC, the Community Foundation Cap & Gown Fund, Semper Fi Task Force, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, ALS Association of Alabama, and the American Red Cross.

In addition, four other $15,000 grants were given through Torch Helps to 305 8th Street, Community Free Clinic, New Hope Children’s Clinic, and Corpus Christi Hope House. The Community Foundation’s new “256” Fund also received a $15,000 grant from Freedom Real Estate & Capital, Torch’s sister company.

That’s a total of $300,000 if you’re about to pull out your calculator! Thank you to Torch Technologies for being such a remarkable community partner.

Employees also marked the anniversary by cutting the ribbon on the newly constructed Freedom Center.

After Chamber Board Chair Joe Newberry, Congressman Mo Brooks, State Senator Bill Holtzclaw and Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle helped LSINC leadership cut the ceremonial ribbon, LSINC CEO Alicia Ryan offered a toast with blue champagne – a nod to the company’s signature corporate color. The toast was a round of thanks to mentors, business partners, family, and employees. The event featured tours of its engineering product development division and capabilities demonstrations. LSINC is a woman-owned small business specializing in strategy and business analytics; intelligence and security; engineering product development, and engineering services.

The company relocated to CRP in April to prepare for anticipated growth. In the short time the company has been in the Park, it has grown by 20 percent.

INTERFUZE cuts ribbon on headquarters in CRP INTERFUZE Corporation, an innovative small aerospace and defense company officially cut the ribbon on their headquarters in Cummings Research Park on October 18. Walter Batson, former Chairman and CEO of Camber Corporation, founded the company in December 2015 with the vision to be the partner of choice for government services, claiming the status quo can no longer guarantee American security and supremacy.

INTERFUZE’s mission is to deliver the innovative solutions and exceptional performance our nation needs to safeguard our freedom and future.

Teledyne Brown Engineering’s 9th expansion Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) began in Huntsville 64 years ago and was the first tenant on the land that is now Cummings Research Park. The company continues to grow. On October 19, TBE held a groundbreaking ceremony for a 22,000 square foot manufacturing facility, making it the ninth building on the company’s main campus. This will help Teledyne grow its current capabilities, which include building and integrating complex hardware and systems for the defense, maritime, energy and space markets.

This move will also help the company increase its systems integration floor space, allowing it to offer a total of 132,000 square feet of manufacturing.

“Building this facility will allow us to meet growing demands for complex systems across multiple markets,” said Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering.

Alabama Update Governor Ivey praises strength of Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville’s ability to innovate

G

overnor Kay Ivey says it’s a new day in Alabama and our state, and the north Alabama region is poised for success.

Her remarks came during the 2017 Alabama Update, an event hosted by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber at the Von Braun Center North Hall.

About 900 business and community leaders attended the luncheon to hear from Governor Ivey, who touched on many topics of interest to our area. These included the importance of Redstone Arsenal, local business growth, advancements in education and the 2020 Census.

RECENT VISITS Governor Ivey has visited the Huntsville area several times since taking office earlier this year. One of the visits was to present a $10 million grant to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to launch Cyber Camp. For more information, click HERE. “That’s going to be a great asset for this area and to the state,” said Ivey. “This grant will allow for a campus expansion of all of the facilities at Space Camp and help make room for Cyber Camp facilities and increase the capacity for all the young people to come participate in that. By moving forward with this expansion, we’ll be expanding the opportunities for boys and girls to be prepared for the emerging cyber threats that threaten our homeland.”

For video footage, click HERE. Ivey’s other visits included Toyota’s recent expansion, the Blue Origin announcement in June, and a stop for her Listen, Learn, Help & Lead Tour in August. On that tour, she visited 11 different cities in Alabama.

“As the new Governor of Alabama, I knew it was important to know what the people of Alabama are facing, what they are dealing with, and if you want to know what things are really like, you’ve got to get 50 miles outside of Montgomery,” said Ivey. “You’ve got to get away from the ‘Capitol bubble.’ I wanted to know what was working in each community - I wanted to know what the real people there were facing, the opportunities, what’s working, what’s not working, what they recommend we focus on going forward to bring progress and stability to the state.”

“Here in Huntsville I heard all the good things that are going on as far as job recruitment and development and education. You have some 26

really bright spots in this part of the state. But I also learned about some needs that you have with improved infrastructure, continued workforce development and more state support to attract more businesses. My team and I are already working on some projects and we’re going to address these concerns.”

STRENGTH OF REDSTONE ARSENAL & “INNOVATION” During her August 16 visit here, Ivey delivered a $1.3 million check for the relocation of Redstone Arsenal Gate 9.

“The Arsenal is absolutely essential to this area. Alabama has a long history of supporting our armed services in the United States, and I am thankful for the close relationship in this state, in this area, with the Army,” said Ivey. “Success of Redstone is so important to our

state’s economy. We must do all we can to help Redstone achieve its mission of being the testing, development and doctrine center of the U.S. Army’s missile program. With all that’s going on in our world today, Redstone Arsenal is more important than ever to our nation.”

Gov. Ivey said she is committed to helping move Alabama forward.

“We’ve seen through the years, time and time again, politicians who say they want to help. It seems like every time we told them something, it fell on deaf ears – or it went in one ear and out the other,” said Ivey.

“But friends, I’m proud to tell you it’s a new day in Alabama. We have new leadership at the helm that is totally committed to honesty and integrity in government. I am listening, I want you to succeed and I want to do everything I can to make you successful. I want you to achieve your dreams.”

Ivey complimented those in the crowd, using a buzzword we hear in Huntsville quite a bit: Innovate.

“To innovate is to bring about something new. To innovate is to improve on something, and to innovate is to resolve to make a difference in the whole of society,” said Ivey.

“Huntsville is the home of the Saturn V Rocket, and this city, as the titan of innovation, has tackled challenges in science, medicine, technology, transportation and modernization of the military just to name a few. Because of you, because of this city, and because of the ingenuity of our people here, a man walked on the moon. Our future is just as promising because Huntsville is part of the Space Launch System to safely send man to Mars and back.”

STRONG START, STRONG FINISH Gov. Ivey recently announced “Strong Start, Strong Finish” – which is a comprehensive approach to improve education all the way from Pre-K to the workforce.

“For too long, different aspects of our educational system have operated alone,” said Ivey. “Under Strong Start, Strong Finish, we will combine our efforts, work collaboratively and bring all stakeholders to the table. Strong Start, Strong Finish addresses three core phases of an individual’s learning journey: early childhood education, beginning high school, and post-high school. All three are focused on the goal of creating a well-trained workforce.”

Gov. Ivey also strongly urged those in attendance to look ahead a few years to the 2020 Census, which has a direct, major impact on Alabama.

“I want to be frank with you about this. If we don’t have good participation in the census, we will be in danger of losing a Congressional seat. And this doesn’t just mean losing Alabama’s voice in Washington, this also means we are at serious risk of losing federal funding, federal funding that goes a long way in improving the quality of life for Alabamians, and helping us provide essential state government services,” said Ivey.

According to a study by George Washington University, every person counted in the Census equates to the state receiving $1,567 in federal funds.

“Think about the difference a family of four alone makes. You may be sitting here thinking that 2020 is far off, but we need to be sure it’s on our radar today. Alabama’s participation in the 2020 census, the future of our Congressional seat, the future of our federal funds, the future of Alabama, relies on you.”

She encouraged people to take part in the census and encourage your friends and family to do so, too.

In September, winners of the recent Small Business Awards participated in the 2017 WBC Forum to help share some of the tricks of the trade. The audience included local small business employees and owners in fields such as marketing, sales, and nonprofits.

What works in small business? What doesn’t? You must be steadfast in your mission and have smart people surrounding you, many said. Sandra Cepeda, CEO of Cepeda Systems & Software Analysis, also said it’s a matter of faith.

Meeting all of your new coworkers, immersing yourself in the company culture, and learning all about the work you’d be doing? Young people from all over Huntsville are getting this opportunity through a very simple but powerful tool – internships.

Internships are a win-win for students and companies alike. Students put their education to work in real life and enhance their soft skills, making them more employable and better prepared for full-time work. Companies test out potential future hires, provide management training opportunities for current employees, and enhance current work with fresh perspectives and timely support.

Most students find their internships from their schools’ career counselors or other school staff. This means that the availability and awareness of internship opportunities is dependent on knowing the right people. Calhoun’s Warhawk Student Ambassadors collect winter items for those in need During the month of October, the Calhoun Warhawk Student Ambassadors held their 3rd Annual Winter Drive. Each year, Calhoun’s Ambassadors team up with the North Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (NACH) to collect items for those in need during the winter months.

With freezing temperatures during the winter months in north Alabama, keeping warm is a challenge, especially for those who are homeless. The Warhawks collected blankets, gently used winter jackets, gloves, scarves and other items. All items were given to the NACH office in Huntsville.

“Words cannot express how proud I feel as a sponsor to these students,” said Sherika Attipoe, Warhawk sponsor. “This is their annual fall charity event, and they absolutely love it. It is so encouraging to see them decorate the boxes and go out into the community to request winter items. These students truly embody selfless service to those less fortunate in our community, and it is encouraging to see our younger generation possess such a positive trait.”
