Nanocomposite Thin Film Coatings
Coatings and platings, in general, are widely used in defense and commercial applications to provide a barrier between environment and substrate, improve wear characteristics, or provide novel surface properties. In the past, the term “coating” referred to a wide family of materials from simple paint to electroplating of metals such as hexavalent chromium or advanced post-process surface finishing. Most common coatings and surface finishes used in DoD weapons systems and commercial applications were originally developed decades ago without significant improvements to note.
APRIL GUEST SPEAKER
Brent Barbee
Founder and Chief Technology Officer of United Protective Technologies
Nanocomposite functional coatings, however, are fundamentally different in their design and application. Using techniques such as atomic layer deposition, physical vapor deposition and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition, extremely thin (10nm – 12 μm) layers can be specially designed to optimize the physical properties of each application (substrate, wear, corrosion, optical emissivity, thermal conductance, hydrophobicity, etc) with multiple orders of magnitude increased performance over conventional coatings. Brent Barbee, Founder and Chief Technology Officer of United Protective Technologies, will provide insight into this emerging technology, and how this emerging technology may be utilized to solve Aerospace and Industrial materials issues. Light refreshments will be provided.

FREE LECTURE– OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
ONLY HOPE A Survivor’s Stories of the Holocaust
“It was easy to die at Auschwitz; one did not have to be a hero to die. There were many ways you could have saved the SS the work; all you had to do was give up. Give up willingly the spark of life still flickering in you—that last thing you had, which they were so determined to take.” Before she passed away in 1974, Felicia Bornstein Lubliner wrote about her internment in Polish slums and two concentration camps, Auschwitz and Gross-Rosen. Her powerful stories have been published by her son, Irv Lubliner. He will share excerpts from “Only Hope: A Survivor’s Stories of the Holocaust,” shedding light on his mother’s experiences and indomitable spirit, as well as his own experience as a child of Holocaust survivors and his process in bringing the book to fruition.
PRESENTER: Irving Lubliner

Explore Hypersonic Aerodynamics–one of the most sought after capabilities in the aerospace and defense arena. Understand the many aspects of Hypersonics and how it differs from flights at lower speeds. Learn about aerodynamics under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. Estimate lift and drag, thermodynamic properties, and heating of hypersonic vehicles. Examine what conditions arise in missile and lifting body designs in hypersonic flight.
What You Will Learn: • Shock relations from the perspective of an infinite Mach number limit • Approximate and exact methods for hypersonic inviscid flows • Local surface inclination methods • Transport in hypersonic flows, including approximate methods for estimating skin friction and heat transfer rates • Design of waveriders • Advanced topics in hypersonic flow effects including shock-shock and shock-boundary layer interactions • Self-similar flows, including the Noh problem and Sedov Blast wave problem • Trajectory analysis
Meet Your Instructor:
Dr. Jason Cassibry earned a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Missouri and a M.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Illinois. He earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UAH, while performing research at NASA MSFC. His research involved numerical modeling of magnetized target fusion for propulsion. Dr. Cassibry also served as a research engineer in the Propulsion Research Center (PRC) at UAH and after receiving his Ph.D., he became an assistant research professor.
Special Guest Lecturer: Dr. Phil Ligrani Dr. Phil Ligrani, Eminent Scholar in Propulsion and Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UAH will present the topics of skin friction, heat transfer and turbulence. Dr. Ligrani earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
