Spatial Delusion

Spatial Delusion

The wide windows, foldable furniture, multi-tasking equipment, bright colors and artificial lights are all designers’ suggestions for expanding the spaces. But the box still is a box. Due to the limits of space in modern societies; the next stage of the interior design deliberation should focus more on the psychological aspects of depth perception through space. In this regard, manipulating an interior space through illusion, including the illusion of scale, distance, and anamorphosis (the creation of an artificial horizon), distorts the size, depth and scale of an interior environment and can expand small spaces, minimize large ones or simply create unexpected visual interest.

Eliminated Cube This three dimensional illusionary model represents how a simple cube via eliminate its primary segments still can be suggested as a cube. The model provides completely different forms and perceptions from different viewpoints.

Origami Wall Models These series of origami (technique of folding paper) models represent different form of walls for interior spaces. Fragmentation of the wall surfaces provides an opportunity to create visual interest in space via playing with light, shadow and reflection. Moreover this type of wall is a considerable way to control the size of the space.

The Martin Luther King Memorial Library is an iconic modernist structure and has been selected to examine the suggested thesis idea. The goal of this project is to examine an interactive relationship between the surfaces of the interior elements including walls, floors and ceilings. In contrast with the simple cubic form of the existing interior structure, stretched irregular geometric shapes for the surfaces control the depth perception from different points of view in space. Main Lobby Stairs Sketches

The seating stair is an adapted conceptual model for the actual interior of the main lobby. This structural stairs instead of connecting the main hall to the lofts in reading rooms provides a set of seats for the open stage in both sides. In addition, form of the stairs and its reflection on the floor delivers different depth perception from the middle of the hall and its two sides.

CHILD MIND INSTITUTE

Considering the physical appearance of the shapes, and in contrast with common straight and cubical forms of the buildings in New York, I have applied the curvilinear forms to the interiors of the Child Mind Institute. The relative characteristic of the curvature, in conjunction with the personalities of children, brings a suitable harmony into the space. Curvilinear forms promote feelings of happiness, calmness, and relaxation. They also elicit more pleasant emotions in comparison to straight lines and rectilinear forms. Curvilinear forms occur more often in nature, hence, making us perceive curvatures as more natural and free than straight-lined forms.

TGP HOUSE

The most familiar words associated with Crystal are stabilizing, balancing, calming or contentment. Crystal has been used in different cultures to enhance self-esteem and promote inner peace. These characteristics provide the inspiration to design a warm space for work full of light and calmness. Coming together two forms of structure, new and existing, introduce the new generation of glass products as a unique structural material. A combination of angular glass and rock walls create a sense of constancy for the space. The modern feature of the interior is due to the contradiction of materials and forms and corresponds to the newness of the TGP products and also relates to the actual location of the office as a riverside one-story building.

Spending time in airport for issues such as flight delays, security matters or even catching a connecting flight is very common today. At unexpected wait times at airports, keeping kids quiet and peaceful could be an additional unpleasant experience for adults. A specific area at airports for entertaining the kids not only decreases parents’ pressure, it would be a way to give cultural or historical information to children. Kids Palace is a children’s play-area for International Shiraz Airport in Iran. The historical significance of the Persepolis “Achaemenid Empire palace” around the city of Shiraz became a great inspiration for designing a small Palace to entertain the kids at the airport.

06. Carpet Design biomimicry design

The characteristic netted appearance, textures and patterns inside and outside skin of a cantaloupe is magnificent as a biomimicry design for the carpet pattern. The net-like texture over the softer base of its skin can be simulated in multi-cut pile carpets. However, looking at the inner side of the cantaloupe, its organic structure in different layers, and the forms of its elements offer more relative shapes and outlines. To illustrate, a combination of the netted look of the cantaloupe skin with the shape of entangled seeds in its central punching bag makes a stunning face for the carpet tile.

The diversity of colors of the cantaloupe in nature provides various existing samples to deliver a classical or naturalistic scene on this carpet. However, using high contrast colors produces an abstract view for this kind of pattern.
