he Krewe of Kiddies from St. Mary’s Nativity School in Raceland will roll their 19 decorated wagon-floats through the school grounds on Friday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. The theme of this year’s parade is “St. Mary’s Loves Disney.” The tradition dates back to 1973 as an art project for the sixth grade students with the idea of further development of community among parents and parishioners. This type of creativity allows the students to
show their talents and express themselves without words. Selection of king and queen and their court is done at random with each grade being represented. Beads are collected from the student body a few weeks before the parade. Patients from the area nursing home are invited as special guests and provide their own king and queen. The police department is on hand for safety, and a grand marshal, chosen from the community, leads the parade.
The floats are designed by fifth graders and are pulled by students from the sixth grade. The bazaar begins at 11 a.m., followed by the parade at Noon. The major characters represented are senior king and queen, grand marshal, junior king and queen, dukes and maids, priest, sister, police officer and firefighter. This year the king and queen are John Clarke and Kolbie Eschete. The public is invited to attend.

he Krewe of Terreanians will parade its 20 floats on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 12:30 p.m., in Houma. The theme for this year is “Terreanians Play Games.” It is the club’s 65th anniversary. In the fall of 1950, the Greater Houma Carnival Club was formed to bring the first night carnival parade to the City of Houma. Thousands of citizens from neighboring parishes came to witness this historic parade. The club continued to grow by purchasing its own floats and the property for a den. The Krewe of Terreanians is still a major parade thrilling the crowds that annually flock to Houma for the pageant. The 400 all-male krewe selected its name from the parish Terrebonne, which in French means “good earth.” King Terreanians LXV is Ricky Pontiff and Queen Terreanians LXV is Lauren Pontiff. The parade captain is Paul Chauvin; and Dane Ledet is ball captain.
