HULL TRUCK THEATRE AND HULL UK CITY OF CULTURE 2017 PRESENT

A BY CHARLES DICKENS ADAPTED BY DEBORAH McANDREW

DECEMBER | THU 1 DEC 2017 – SAT 7 JAN 2018

ON SALE 2 DEC 2016

WELCOME ...to the first half of our world-class programme for Hull UK City of Culture 2017. Few people can have missed the excitement that surrounded the launch of the Hull2017 programme in September and the announcement that our season will open with The Hypocrite, the brand new farce from Hull playwright Richard Bean. We are already in rehearsal for a supporting event, Defiance, which will be performed by our senior youth theatre and Act III, our company for the over 55’s. We are delighted to be working with Northern Broadsides on Richard III, a fitting celebration of their 25 years of presenting accessible theatre with a Northern voice. Mighty Atoms rounds off The Hull Trilogy and brings the city’s story up to date with a focus on its women, whilst Bryony Lavery’s new adaptation of Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend gives voice to young people as all of our youth theatre groups come together for the first time. Our diverse programme certainly has something for all tastes and still includes a wealth of visiting companies, including a trio of unmissable festivals – BBC Radio 3 Folk Festival, Hull Jazz Festival and Women of the World.

All of this ambitious work is evidence of the exciting journey that Hull Truck Theatre is on, and we want to continue to offer audiences innovative, high quality work for years to come. To do this, we need your help and have introduced Supporting Cast as a way for you to pledge a regular gift that will bring our vision to life. For more information please see page 33. Similarly, our new major partnership with Heron Foods will make a significant impact on our work in local communities and we are pleased to be working with another long-standing Hull company with a reputation for quality and value. After years of planning, it’s finally here – we hope we can welcome you soon to our season of exceptional drama.

CIRCUS

April 1642. Sir John Hotham, Governor of Hull, Member for Beverley and owner of most of East Yorkshire is charged by Parliament to secure the arsenal at Hull and deny entry to King Charles I.

EVENT

If only it were that simple. With a Royalist siege outside the city walls and the rebellion of the mob within, Civil War seems inevitable and losing his head more than probable. And that’s to say nothing of his problems at home – a lovesick daughter, a ghost obsessed with the chinaware, sexually arousing furniture and a wife intent on escape. Caught between two choices, Honour and Advantage, we join Sir John on frankly the worst day of his life. A riotous comedy from award-winning Hull playwright Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors), starring Mark Addy (Game of Thrones, The Full Monty) as Sir John Hotham. Recommended Age 14+

RICHARD III BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTED BY BARRIE RUTTER DESIGNED BY NEIL MURRAY KING. LOVER. MURDERER. England is in the midst of the Wars of the Roses when Richard, Duke of Gloucester, sees a chance for the crown. He is Shakespeare’s twisted villain who we love to hate as, with ruthless cunning and silver-tongued charm, he stops at nothing to remove wife, brothers, nephews and friends from his path. As the death toll mounts, Richard seizes the throne, but at what cost? He’s surrounded by vengeful ghosts, friends he can’t trust and a terrible curse cast by the old Queen Margaret. In a final battle at Bosworth Field, the bloody feud between York and Lancaster must end at last.

“It is with sweet circularity that the 25th anniversary of Northern Broadsides coincides with Hull’s celebrations as UK City of Culture 2017. I am a native son; Broadsides was launched in Hull with a production of Richard III in a Marina Boatshed in 1992. This production with Hull Truck Theatre will be exclusive to the city festivities and will be a birthday thank you for 25 years of theatrical support.” Barrie Rutter, Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides

The gloves are on!

CIRCUS

In a struggling pub on one of Hull’s toughest streets, ex-pro boxer Taylor Flint runs a women’s boxercise class. For Lauren, Jazz, Aneta and Grace the class is much more than a way to lose weight and have a laugh – they’re fighting the grinding challenges of everyday life.

EVENT

When the pub is threatened with closure, the women agree to be part of an unlicensed fight night to raise money and rally the community. They’re ready to prove themselves in a world that shows them little respect, but Taylor knows that once the gloves are on, the real test will be going toe to toe with friends and neighbours. Inspired by Hull’s original Mighty Atom, Barbara Buttrick, this new play by award-winning writer Amanda Whittington (Ladies Day, Be My Baby, Amateur Girl) pulls no punches.

"Mighty Atoms is the final instalment of The Hull Trilogy and focuses on another important aspect of Hull's story - the struggles, sacrifices and victories of its women. "I am very proud of these three new plays and it is fitting that this one is set in the present as we celebrate Hull2017 and look to the city's future." Artistic Director - Mark Babych

OUR MUTUAL FRIEND ADAPTED BY BRYONY LAVERY FROM THE NOVEL BY CHARLES DICKENS DIRECTED BY TOM BELLERBY WORLD PREMIÈRE PRODUCTION “In these times of ours, though concerning the exact year there is no need to be precise, a boat of dirty and disreputable appearance, with two figures in it floated on the [let’s say, Humber] …as an autumn evening was closing in.” - So begins Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend, which he wrote in 1865. Suppose you were all young, poor, barely scraping a living, some of you homeless… Suppose one of you, a mutual friend, has just been pulled, drowned, from your local river… Suppose you wanted to let the world know what killed them… And then suppose that one of you was, at that time, reading this Charles Dickens novel about friendship, kindness, cruelty, money, lack of money, business and piles of seemingly useless dust, which somehow seems to be all about your mutual friend. Suppose you just got up and told us the whole story… The city is Hull. The river is The Humber. The time? Can you actually tell whether it is 1865 or 2017? Hull Truck Theatre’s youth theatre groups from 11+ unite for the first time on the main stage in this feisty new production, adapted by award-winning writer Bryony Lavery.

'We want social housing, not social cleansing' Facing skyrocketing rent and forced relocation out of London, 29 single mothers united to confront Newham Council's gentrification of their home town. From the streets of Newham to the Houses of Parliament, this bold and pertinent piece of documentary theatre is adapted from the reallife testimonies of the most under-represented and prominent voices on the political spectrum - providing a truthful retelling of the Focus E15 Campaign, Britain's housing crisis and how one group of women refused to be marginalised. This is the beginning of the end of the housing crisis.

BETTY BLUE EYES A MUSICAL COMEDY

Based on the Allan Bennett film A Private Function this hilarious musical takes us back to 1940s Britain. We have won the war, but food is still scarce and anyone found trading in suspect meat could fall foul of the tenacious Mr Wormold – a government Meat Inspector. The only bright spark is the impending marriage of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip which the towns’ elite plan to celebrate in style. Gilbert, the local chiropodist and his ambitious wife Joyce find themselves embroiled in a plot to illegally rear a pig especially for the occasion. The pig in question, Betty, runs amuck creating a madcap adventure for Joyce and Gilbert who, despite the unlikely circumstances, reignite the true love they once had. With songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, the Olivier-winning duo behind Honk, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, and most recently Wind in the Willows, this brilliantly British story of the underdog overcoming all the odds showcases a perfect balance of wit, pathos and post war optimism. This is NAPAs third production at Hull Truck Theatre following sell-out performances of The Phantom of the Opera and Sweeney Todd. Book early to avoid disappointment!

SCOTT GIBSON: LIFE AFTER DEATH This show tells the story of the three weeks that changed Scott’s life forever. On returning from a stag weekend in Blackpool, Scott’s brain exploded – he had suffered a massive brain haemorrhage. So he did what any self respecting Glaswegian man would do and went back to bed for 4 days. A darkly hysterical, inspiring show, delivered with the trademark filthy charisma that Scott is known for; Life After Death is a tale of love and pain, fear and hope. It’s about overcoming insurmountable odds, and how comedy can bring you back to life.
