FAMILY MUSIC DRAMA
Full programme of Hull Truck Theatre's 50th anniversary shows inside!
WELCOME TO OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON Welcome to our 50th Anniversary season – an exciting programme of work that recognises our rich history not just by recreating it, but creatively reinterpreting it for 2022, alongside projects that reflect our present and give a glimpse into our future. After such a difficult time, we wanted to bring you a year of joy and laughter with funny, heartwarming stories that create that unmissable feeling of live theatre. This special year starts with a bang with Richard Bean’s new play 71 Coltman Street, a hilarious “fantasia” inspired by Mike Bradwell’s founding of Hull Truck Theatre. For anyone who was lucky enough to see The Hypocrite, this is a must-see to brighten up the start of 2022. For the first time we’re offering an opportunity to support the creation of this production and access unique behind the scenes insights - do check out our new Production Syndicate on the opposite page. Of course, any celebration of Hull Truck’s 50th would not be compete without recognising John Godber’s significant contribution. John has collaborated with local teachers to reimagine and update one of his key works Teechers, which is more relevant than ever, at a time where we are fighting for the arts to remain a crucial part of the curriculum. Our commitment to the community is stronger than ever, we’re putting our creative learning work centre stage in the Heron with a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream celebrating the talent across our region. A new partnership with 509 productions will create Meal One – a new inclusive, digitally innovative production for families and adults with learning disabilities.
When considering the right Christmas production to end 2022, there could be no other choice than A Christmas Carol, a story celebrating past, present and future, and one of our most popular productions of the last 10 years and an unmissable part of your festive celebrations. We are incredibly excited to finish our 50th year showcasing the talent of Lydia Marchant with her first full-scale work, Mumsy. First involved with our theatre aged 13, Lydia’s writing career is going stellar. Mumsy is an honest take on the challenges of motherhood and inter-generational female relationships with the humour and warmth that marks a great Hull Truck Theatre play. You’ve been an incredible part of Hull Truck over the years – without you we wouldn’t have built such a range of successful work and forged a key place in our community. Thank YOU for all you’ve made possible. We’re grateful also to Hull City Council and Arts Council England and every staff member, trustee, artist and audience member who has made this organisation so very special for the last 50 years. We’re excited in anticipation of everything we will achieve together for the NEXT 50 years.
Mark Babych Artistic Director
Janthi Mills-Ward Executive Director
Another classic premiere from our history, Ladies’ Day, and its sequel Ladies Down Under, will now become a unique trilogy with Amanda Whittington’s new instalment Ladies Unleashed, a moving comedy about friendship and facing the future.

HULL TRUCK THEATRE PRESENTS A RIOTOUS NEW COMEDY TO KICK OFF OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
71 COLTMAN STREET BY RICHARD BEAN DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH ‘I want theatre to be sweaty, exciting, unpredictable…’ Mike Bradwell is on a mission to revolutionise British theatre. He’s sick of fancy plays by dead blokes and wants to tell stories about real people, living real lives. And it doesn’t get more real than Hull. In a freezing cold house on Coltman Street, a motley crew of unemployed actors gather to improvise a play with no name, no plot, no budget and no bookings. Richard Bean’s (The Hypocrite, One Man, Two Guvnors) hilarious and irreverent comedy takes us back to the 70s and Hull Truck Theatre’s origin story. It is a roaring combination of comedy, cabaret, farce and drama. Join us for a celebration of where it all began…

HULL TRUCK THEATRE AND JOHN GODBER COMPANY PRESENT
TEECHERS LEAVERS ’22 WRITTEN BY JOHN GODBER DIRECTED BY MARK BABYCH As part of Hull Truck Theatre’s 50th anniversary celebrations, John Godber reimagines his iconic play for the leavers of 2022. Salty, Gail and Hobby are departing Whitewall College for uncertain futures in uncertain times. Burn out, pregnancies, stress, affairs, depression; no-one is exempt, from the students, and security staff, to the business-minded Principal. How much more can a system take? In 1987 the teaching of drama in Comprehensive education was being marginalised in a system under pressure. In the same year Hull Truck Theatre produced Teechers which was to become the go-to play to attract young people to the theatre. Thirty-five years later, exam chaos, tech poverty, isolation, absenteeism and lost school hours have put the state system under more pressure than ever before. Highly physical, hugely funny, deceptively radical, mixing dance and spoken word, Teechers Leavers ’22 is alive and in your face; back in Hull where it all started.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL BASED ON THE NOVELLA BY CHARLES DICKENS ADAPTED BY DEBORAH MCANDREW On a cold Christmas Eve, four spirits conspire to show Ebenezer Scrooge the error of his ways. His old business partner, Jacob Marley has returned from the dead to offer him a second chance, if he can change his mean and miserly behaviour. Nowhere are the effects of poverty more keenly felt than in the Cratchit family, especially by their youngest son, Tiny Tim. As Scrooge’s inspirational journey shows him both the hardship and love of those around him, he is reminded of his own powers of charity and kindness. This thrilling adaptation of Dicken’s classic Christmas ghost story, set in Hull, is a magical, festive treat for all the family.

THE BALLAD OF MULAN PRESENTED BY RED DRAGONFLY PRODUCTIONS AND GRIST TO THE MILL PRODUCTIONS WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY ROSS ERICSON Around fifteen hundred years ago China was split into two parts – the Northern and the Southern dynasties. This was a time of great unrest, a time of civil war, a time when legends were born, and that is what ‘Mulan’ is – a woman, a warrior, a Chinese legend. Based on the historical 6th Century Chinese poem, we follow Mulan who, to save her family’s honour, disguised herself as a man and joined the Emperor’s army. Now the fighting is coming to an end, one last battle and she will be going home – but can she return to her old life, become a woman again. A search for identity in a violent world. "As a Spotlight Partner, we receive the peace of mind that our investment not only helps people to express themselves and develop new talents, but also enables additional jobs in the arts sector.”
We believe in the power of theatre and creativity to change lives. That’s why we want to welcome the widest possible audience to enjoy our work. Every year we try to remove barriers that might prevent someone from coming to the theatre. “Each year Hull Truck Theatre is able to provide us with hundreds of tickets that we then give to children living in foster care and schools in areas of disadvantage. These children have never been to the theatre before and it’s an incredible opportunity for them. A person who visits the theatre as a child is twice as likely to return as an adult, so this programme really does give children the gift of theatre for life.” Natasha Banke, Director of Hull & East Yorkshire Children’s University We’re so grateful to all our donors and partners whose generosity and valuable support make this possible. For our Spotlight Partners a commitment to the community and great theatre makes good business sense.
