PORTFOLIO LI SIHAN Selected work 2015-2017

The cover photo (2014summer, Beijing, by iPhone) is about a woman gleaning and collecting scraps in piles of debris. Those debris, are rather than garbage in the position of the bulldozer beside that woman. I would express my high respect to her, and devote myself learning from her to make my further study: commiserate every small tiles, and try to discover beauty from “garbage.

DESIGN

PERIOD: 4/2016-6/2016, 3rd Year Market Design Studio, NTUT / ADVISOR: Wanyu Liu (zell721@gmail.com) / INDIVIDUAL WORK /

TYPE: Urban Market(ground)&Office Building(Towers) / LOCATION: Beitou District, Taipei / TOTAL AREA: 11478m^2 / FAR: 3.0

*Archiket: This word is made up by “Arch”and “Market”, for its form and function. The market is designed to reshape a typical shopping space in Beitou district, Taipei, Taiwan. As the site adjoin a district government in the centre of Beitou district, the assignment asked about FAR over 3.0 and some official function and citizens’ assembling functions. In this design, I designed a typical semi-circle unit according to original stalls and shops. And I left the whole first floor free to get in and out for motorbikes, which will offer convenience to Taipei citizens.

Three Typical Types of Taipei Markets Photos: They are all taken in Taipei, searched from website. Sketches: Plan and section, 2017, colour pencil on sketching paper. Concept diagrams: Dark grey people instead of sellers; shadow grey people instead of buyers; line-type people instead of passersby; yellow blocks instead by cargoes; shallow grey background instead by inside space. Those three types are compared in: 1. Trading happens inside or outside. 2. How ceilings divide inside and outside during trade. 3. How cargoes divide inside and outside during trade. 4. What is the relationship between trade and traffic.

Section Drawing 401mm Ă— 132mm 2017 Colour pencil, sketching paper Type 1,2,3 have all been included in this one section. Units along each side street are type 1. Units on ground floor are type 2. Units on second floor are type 3. Four states of a shop are presented in row: Preparation, On Business, Suspension, Cleaning out(or not occupied).

Second Floor Inside Perspective There are several types of units inside the market, which of various window size and position. 1. Skylight: Some windows stretch from floor to ceiling, let skylight shine in. So this form might be suit to fresh vegetables and fruits. 2. Structural: Some windows open widely, let people stream flows naturally. So this form might adapt to notion stores. 3. Vertical: The vertical ones, with only one opening, vertically cutting the concrete shell, is more delicate and private, so might be small cafeterias or clubs. 4. Half: The last type makes lights well-distributed form circle windows. So this type might be used as restaurants and exhibitions.

PERIOD: 04/2017-05/2017, DUT&TDU Workshop / Advisors: Yamamoto Keisuke, Matsushita Kiwa, Li Guopeng, Zhou Bo, Fan Yue / GROUP WORK (Design), with Liu Xiangjun, Hu cheng, Ishikawa Yuma, Saito Ryoto / CONTRIBUTION: Main designing, model making / INDIVIDUAL REWORKED (Design&Graphic Drawing) / TYPE: Urban Design / LOCATION: Kita-senju, Japan / AREA: 35000m^2 /FAR: 3.0

*Shukuba: Shukuba (ĺŽżĺ ´) were post stations during the Edo period in Japan, generally located on one of the Edo Five Routes or one of its sub-routes. This project is located at an old block in Kitasenju, Japan. Which is a traffic centre with both lots of travellers and elders. It is designed in our workshop with Tokyo Denki University(TDU) in five days, with a group of five people. We cast our concerns to five aspects in Kita-senju. Including the Arakawa River flood, rebuilding historical Shukuba for lodging, offer infrastructure to tourists of Tokyo Olympics, inject energy to the aging area, and renewal construction of the traditional wooden houses. We assume our concept: sloping Shukuba would inspire and combine all five aspects. 0

an area for visitors to lodge in. People would call a district “町”. They are usually with a uniform function. Places are always famous as a unit of “町 “.And that became a part of Japanese culture.

Aging problem has been a big issue for the whole country, so does this site. But expect many elders, there are also many undergraduates in the site. Hotels

Kita-senju has a long time performing as a important station. Till now the largest number of travellers come to Tokyo via this station.

Plus, we could make the travellers, students and elders mixed up together, to delighting the energy of this area.

PERIOD: 8/2017-11/2017 INDIVIDUAL WORK ADVISOR: Jin Yuan, Jiang Boyuan, Li Wenli TYPE: Concept Architecture design LOCATION: E’Mei, Sichuan, China TOTAL AREA: 8000m^2 FAR: 30.0

*Holding Life: It comes from a Buddhist word, ātma-grāha, which means “hold a firm opinion of people have a hypostatic physical entity. Holding life is for the purpose of using Buddhist view of life and death, to help build a detached thought, to help people get rid of suicide. This shuttle is designed to create an EXTREME condition: let people experience the limbo between life and death. When people jumped to die, they would recalled the stories about when they were alive. And that moment, may also be the best time for them to rethink about their life, and maybe help them know the real meaning of being and nothingness. (Jumping squares materials are for homage to Joself Albers, Homage to the Square. Background photo is from 500px website. People material is from a documentary, Ashes and Snow. )

Holding Life

The Heart Sutra (Sanskrit, 心經)

Phase1 BODY (RUPAM,色)

(Referenced from http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/

All external material entities are called body. When people drops in a glass tube, he will experience mountains, birds, clouds...Those “bodies” flashed in seconds. They will soon be blurry, as speed increased.

heartsutra.html)

Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, meditating deeply on Perfection of Wisdom, saw clearly that the five aspects of human existence are empty*, and so released himself from suffering. Answering the monk Sariputra, he said this: Body(phase 1) is nothing more than emptiness(phase 6). Emptiness is nothing more than body. The body is exactly empty, and emptiness is exactly body. The other four aspects of human existence -- feeling(phase2), thought(phase3), will(phase4), and consciousness(phase5) -- are likewise nothing more than emptiness(6), and emptiness(6) nothing more than they. All things are empty(6): Nothing is born, nothing dies, nothing is pure, nothing is stained, nothing increases and nothing decreases.

0'00'' 821mm

So, in emptiness(6), there is no body(1), no feeling(2), no thought(3), no will(4), no consciousness(5). There are no eyes, no ears, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind. There is no seeing,no hearing, no smelling, no tasting, no touching, no imagining. There is nothing seen, nor heard, nor smelled, nor tasted, nor touched, nor imagined.

0'22'' 765mm

0'41'' 698mm

Suicide Experience Shuttle Design

Phase2 FEELING (VEDANA ,受)

Phase3 THOUGHT (SAMJNA ,想)

Square overlap is a symbol of multi-dimensional space. In the weightless high-speed, people jumps into a square, like jumping into a craterlike space level. The feeling brought by such an impact makes the word “feeling” extreme.

“Samjna”is about recognition of physics. When jumps into a dense forest, people have a rapid recognition of various plants and animals. That is an extreme amplification of recognizing.

Holding Life

Phase4 WILL (SAMSKARAH,行) After last phase, people will conceive feelings of “thought”--happy, sad, terrified...This phase is a pure place for people to look back to their wills.

0’2’’34 765mm

Suicide Experience Shuttle Design

Phase5 CONSCIOUSNESS (VIJNANAM, 識)

Phase6 EMPTINESS (VIJNANAM,空)

Through falling, different colours of plants are merged together. By this phase, eyes have to use their full effort to identify them. That “consciousness” is the bridge between self and the world.

Emptiness is not nothingness, neither the opposite of exist. Emptiness means a complex combination of various things. Those things are what people just experienced through the shuttle. Also, emptiness means fluxing of things. Through climbing, people will release suicide will.

People In Space

In Chinese Ink and Wash drawings, painters usually use gradation of ink to express the space position of bamboos. But the so called “gradation” is painters’ feeling, not a quantification of space perspective. So I would assume when two pieces of papers overlapping with each other, the multi-space would be created. Through the light, the sequence of two papers disappeared. Watching by different overlapping angles, I could imagine people walking in the picture. These people could walk from one space(bamboo) to another one, just like walking in Escher’s space.
