A Hustle and a Sacrifice This is who I am. For five years I have been blessed to publish Huami Magazine. My goal is to always provide our readership with informative and inspiring information. As you flip through its pages, I hope that your life is positively impacted by the stories of battle and triumph, failures and success shared by those featured. I confess that I love what God has allowed me to do. Huami Magazine has given me purpose, a purpose that I describe as a hustle and sacrifice. Many years ago I asked God to bless my life with something that would glorify Him. At that present time I was merely following a routine that fell short of satisfying a thirst and hunger for living a more meaningful life. God answered me with Huami Magazine. Understandably, I responded with excitement and immediately began to look for ways to fulfill God’s command. I stumbled and since then I have made mistakes, some big and some bigger, but with each blunder the lessons have brought me closer to where God wants me to be. In order for me to fully realize my vision, I can’t sit back and wait for it to happen. I must hustle, go when I would rather stay, and be willing to take some loses. These loses I describe as sacrifices. Not everyone is happy for your success and some could care less. I have lost some friends, a sacrifice. I have lost opportunities, a sacrifice. I have even used my own resources to meet deadlines, a sacrifice. But I refuse to sit around and search for answers on what to do after the wall tumbles, that is my hustle. I hustle because I asked God for my gift. He could have given it to anyone else, but He chose me. I hustle because I am truly grateful for my blessing and being chosen. I advise anyone who has a vision and dream for doing anything with their lives, to be willing to let go and surrender the comforts of life. The rewards are much more gratifying and will make your life much more meaningful.

Sampson’s inspiration for creating these groups came from her love of the sport and an inability to find local women that play golf. Her mission is to start a women’s golf league in Greensboro and the surrounding areas that offer women an opportunity to learn how to play golf. Her meet-up group attracts women of all skill levels and offers an opportunity to learn, connect and collaborate with other prominent women that not only play golf, but also make a positive difference in their home, church and their communities at large.
Rhonda Sampson of Greensboro has created two unique forums for women that have expressed an interest and desire to learn how to play golf. The Greensboro Women’s Golf Group is a public forum on Facebook created to highlight, encourage, and promote more local participation of women in the sport of golf.

UBI provides different options for new homeowners that consist of being able to buy a very detailed renovation with in a price range of $55K - $75K. After down payment assistance in the amount of $25K, UBI’s clients have the option of purchasing a newly constructed home within the price range of $75K -$95K. Another hurdle is finding communities where properties are in need of restoration and revitalization. Moving forward he plans to continue to strengthen UBI to do good work and improve living conditions in our communities for a long time to come. h

Only allow a Professional Stylist to Care For Your Hair

ala Slade knows hair. More importantly, she knows healthy hair and how to maintain it and achieve it. Slade is the owner of Simply Beautiful hair salon in Greensboro. She knows the latest styles and techniques; from weaves to cuts to color, but her main goal is to convey the importance of maintaining healthy hair. “It’s your glory,” she says. “All women want to look good, but it’s more than just the outside; it starts on the inside. It starts with eating right, exercising and drinking lots of water. As professionals we can do lots of things topically, but it’s more effective and important to start with what we put inside our bodies.” Slade has been a life-long Greensboro resident and has loved everything related to hair just as long. She always wanted to do hair. Even as a little girl she played with dolls and styled their hair. She reluctantly admits, she continued to be the doll’s stylist even throughout high school. That’s just how much she loved hair. Even so, after she graduated from high school she enrolled in North Carolina Central Universitythe logical next step. However, her heart wasn’t in it. Slade eventually signed up for a cosmetology program at Carolina Beauty College in Durham. That was where she belonged, she thought. She felt at home among the bobs and braids, the chemistry of coloring and the weaves and wigs. She has worked in the hair care industry for 16 years and has owned her own salon for four years. She is serious about her craft and her business. Accordingly, Slade is also concerned about the industry and the seeming increase in the lack of respect for the profession. “The industry is suffering due to the economy and the internet. You Tube videos show people how to do this and that and people are trying it on their own, but nobody is telling them how to care for their specific hair,” she says. Believe it or not she says, “There is a science to what we do and there are some of us who are really concerned about healthy hair and maintaining it so that in your teens and twenties you are fly and still have hair in your forties and fifties.” Slade says she sees the need for hair care instruction on a daily basis. She is noticing there are women who are having hair issues from constant weaves and ponytails and using glue. They are all fine to use but she says it just shouldn’t be done on a daily basis. There are women in their forties and fifties, she says, with thinning hair due to improper care when they were younger. “Don’t get me wrong, I love weave, but it’s better to wear the weave because you want to verses because you have to.” Continued on next page

Consequently, Slade is trying to get more women back into the salon. It has become somewhat of her mission. A mission she believes could not only insure all stylist’s job security but it could also provide the tender loving care many women need who are suffering from hair loss and other debilitating hair issues. Not to mention it would bring back “beauty shop bonding”. She wants ladies to get excited about the salon experience again. “There is a little excitement about salons with all the reality shows, but a lot of it includes too much drama,” she says. “We want people to know there are still salons with no drama and plenty of professionalism.” The Simply Beautiful hair team quips they should have a reality show, but Slade says the fact of the matter is they would never make it; they don’t have anything over the top going on. They maintain a drama-free, laid back, inviting and professional atmosphere. Each stylist brings her very

From locks and twists to sew ins and children’s hair, Simply Beautiful has it all covered. Slade recalls the days when women went to the salon because they knew the beautician would take care of them. The stylist was always aware of the client’s hair care needs and made appropriate and timely recommendations. Friendships were formed and goodhumored fun and laughter was something the client could expect. At the end of the experience the next appointment was booked and the client anticipated her return. is why the Simply Beautiful hair care team is sponsoring a community healthy hair event. On November 11, the group of stylists will host a hair show; but it won’t be the typical hair show. The event will be all about the community. The focus will be on healthy hair while providing realistic tips and styles for everyday care and maintenance. There will be something for everyone. Chic, trendy, corporate, church, natural and fantasy. The community will be able to see how to have healthy hair in person. They can ask questions, even meet the stylists and perhaps arrange consultations. As cosmetologists, the team believes it is their responsibility to educate their clients and watch over their crown and glory. Slade is looking to the future and making plans to expand into a full service salon and spa. She already sells

Michael Thomas By Tonya Dixon Photos by Howard Giather
M
ichael, the Lord said to tell you one day you will pastor a very large church.” It was a statement made that would be forever in grained in Michael Thomas’ memory. At the tender age of nine years old his church mother had prophetically spoken over his life. It wasn’t something he didn’t already know. He sensed at a young age that the hand of God was upon his life. However, it was at that moment that the reality and inevitability of what the matriarch had spoken would for certain be Thomas’ destiny. Many years later the Mt. Gilead, NC native found himself a US Airman based in San Antonio Texas. Over the years he remained a servant of God but until that point in time the prophetic word he received as a young boy seemed as distant as the miles he had traveled and the years in between. Thomas got connected with a small but growing ministry. The Air Force taught him how to survive in life. The church fed him what was necessary to survive for eternal life. He began to flourish as did the church ministry. He faithfully served when there were only 60 or 70 members and when the ministry grew to over 1,000 members. He was elevated in leadership yet he willingly served under leadership. Thomas was so willing and so content that he almost hesitated when he heard the voice of the Lord tell him it was time for change. God wanted him to move back to North Carolina. He knew it was the beginnings of prophecy fulfilled, yet it still wasn’t necessarily what he wanted to do. “I never wanted to come back to NC, but it was divine intervention,” says Thomas. “I went on a fast and God told me to move back to North Carolina and start a church from the ground up. He told me to go to Greensboro and he even gave me the name of the church.” The vision came in 1982 yet it would be five years before Thomas left for North Carolina and four more years before he officially started Love and Faith Christian Fellowship and become a pastor of one of Greensboro’s largest and fastest growing congregations.
16
love and faith
The young pastor knew the most important thing to recognize and main0tain was the timing of God. “I’ve discovered whenever God gives you the vision it’s never the time to move on it,” he says. He explains the importance of knowing when to move. “Habakkuk 2 says to write the vision and wait because it is for an appointed time. God had to develop me and prepare me for the vision and the vision had to be prepared for me.” Thomas also says God revealed some things in his life that had to be dealt with before he pastored. Accordingly, he sought God’s guidance and he officially began his life as a pastor on the first Sunday in 1991. He gave it his all. The first service he shepherded was held in his own home to a congregation of three, including Thomas, his wife and daughter, both of whom he pays homage to because he knows he would not be able to do what he does in ministry without their love and support. The humility that many admire in Pastor Thomas is a direct reflection of the churches very humble and meager beginnings. The difficulties the church initially faced laid the ground work for a ministry built on complete trust in God. “It was very difficult in the beginning and for several years. I believe God never starts you out at the top. Even as the church slowly grew struggles still remained,” he says. “We struggled financially. We struggled with everything you could think of for a church.”
He has ministered in China, Dubai, India, Tanzania and countless other countries across various continents and he is preparing to go into Ghana and Norway in the coming weeks and months. Nevertheless, no matter where Pastor Thomas finds himself, the message is always the same: to preach Jesus. The magnificent national and international ministry God has given Love and Faith is also the driving force behind The Good Shepherd’s Fellowship International. It is an extension of the church solely for the purpose of developing pastor’s after God’s heart. Pastor Thomas believes God has called him to be a pastor of pastors and the international fellowship has provided him the opportunity to properly develop and equip individuals God has already called. The reception has been so astronomical that he has been fielding calls from pastors across the world seeking to be taught and loved. “If there’s anything that excites me the most is to see people growing and maturing,” he says. Pastor Thomas and the Love and Faith Christian Fellowship church are committed to serving God, by showing God’s love and spreading the gospel throughout the community, the nation and the world; remaining faithful to the ministry’s motto: The ministry where Jesus Christ is Lord and the people are loved. h
Nevertheless, he remained vigilant and committed to the vision God gave him, understanding current situations never represent future promises. Pastor Thomas and Love and Faith Christian Fellowship remained consistent and faithful and steadily grew. The church eventually moved out of the Thomas home into a hotel. From there, they moved into a storefront. Ultimately, the local church expanded enough to necessitate a larger more encompassing facility. Consequently, in 1999 Love and Faith broke ground on a new sprawling church campus. The ministry saw such significant and swift growth because Thomas was and always will be dedicated to teaching the Word of God; to building a foundation on the Word of God; and developing strong leaders who can help others. He says it’s just like a family. Brothers and sisters helping brothers and sisters in service to God. Today the church has over 3,000 members and many more that attend on a regular basis. Although people have come and gone the vitality and growth of the church continues to increase by the grace of God. Pastor Thomas remains resolute in the fact that he has the job of preaching the Word to people, but it’s up to God who comes and who goes. “I think in churches we become despondent when people leave but people will come and go,” he says. “But I understand you don’t belong to Pastor Thomas. You don’t belong to Love and Faith. You belong to God and God has the right to move anybody, anytime. I believe success is when God says I’m pleased with you. That’s what I call success.” It appears God is pleased with Pastor Thomas and the Love and Faith church body. It is obvious His hand is mighty upon the ministry. Members are enthused and appreciate the “love” and the “fellowship” they experience. The ministry has been so favored by God a second location has been established in Kernersville to accommodate members in other areas of the triad. They are “one church in two locations.” Thomas is humbled by the enormous job God has entrusted him to do and the souls to feed. The self-proclaimed country boy, from the country church, in the little old country town has been able to represent and present God to others across the United States as well as the world. “We are a very mission minded church. God has blessed us to be a blessing locally, nationally and internationally. That’s part of the strength of our church,” says Thomas. Sometimes what happens in America is that we think God is an American, but one of the greatest blessings is to go into other cultures and preach and watch God move. A good friend once told me, ‘Mike if God is going to bless your church you have to have a better view of the Body of Christ.’’ Love and Faith is a melting pot of many different nationalities and it is with that mentality that God has opened the door for Pastor Thomas to go in to many different places.

“I have always enjoyed creating things. It has been a passion of mine to create things with my hands ever since I was in junior high school,” she says. Initially, she wanted to open a boutique that would feed her desire of becoming a fashion model. “I had a passion for clothes. I loved designing and creating them,” she says. That passion for creating would eventually evolve into crafting. Soon she was sewing clothes for herself, her family, and others. She also began making gift baskets before arriving at her new love of creating food. In 2009, Harvey officially began operations of her company, even before coming up with a name for it. “Heavenly Sweets” is a reflection of what her creations is all about. Sweet treats that are different and great tasting. “I strived for perfection in the taste of whatever I created,” she says. “Heavenly foods, because Heaven is perfect. I naturally called my baked creations Heavenly Sweets because I want to always please God and my husband. I was never satisfied with just an “okay” tasting cake. I wanted it to curl your toes and give you goose bumps at just the thought.”
Hello Kitty Sweet 16 Birthday Cake
Heavenly Sweets is a Raleigh based Custom Bakery, where the cake of your dreams is brought to life and baked with Love. “At Heavenly Sweets we feel our Heavenly Sweets are beautiful and delicious, and we are certain that your mind and taste buds will be blown away!” Harvey reflects back to when her family was living in Germany and her son was in the 6th grade. She made a batch of chocolate chip cookies for him to take to school for his personal enjoyment. “I was at work and received a call from his school principal who asked me if I had baked some cookies. Puzzled, I said yes, then he preceded to tell me about my son ready and willing to fight an older kid who was much bigger than my son because the boy had taken my son’s cookies,” Continued on next page

This was confirmation that she was on to something good. “I couldn’t believe that my son would go through all of that for my cookies, when he could have gotten more once he got home” she says. She has even named a cookie after her pastor. Called the “JJ Wilkins”, it’s an oatmeal raisin cookie with pecans and walnuts. Eventually her passion grew to baking cakes. She made her first Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese frosting with unfavorable results. ‘It was leaning and it was cracked but I took it to church any way for a church fellowship. Twelve years later Red velvet is still one of my biggest selling flavors,” she states.
Strawberry Love Cake
Harvey is inspired by love. She says there is no better feeling than to see the expression on some ones’ face when they taste all the love she has baked into her creation. “You know how you felt when your grandmother or mother would bake a special dessert. The one that would take your breath away with the first bite. Those are the moments that I try to recreate for all of my clients,” she says. The cost of her baked goods differs from person to person and are just as customized as the creation she bakes. It also depends on how many people you are feeding and if the client requires delivery and set up. “We offer one of a kind, individually unique custom creations. Our products are not only appealing to the eye but pleasing to the taste,” she says. “People always ask us how many flavors we have and the answer is always the same ‘any’”. Harvey says she doesn’t put a number on her flavors because she believes her capabilities are limitless.
Jungle Birthday Cake
Heavenly Sweets offers a line of cupcakes called Smiles, Sweet Buffet, Customized Cakes, and cookies. Cupcake Smiles is available in three sizes: Smile (Jumbo set of 6), Grins (Regular set of 12), and Smirks (Mini Me set of 24). The Sweet Buffet consists of a variety of desserts. It is customized with the color scheme of any clients event. Cookies are available in ten regular flavors including Harveys biggest seller, Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese icing. Cookies are sold by the dozen. Deliveries are available as Harvey has even traveled to Savannah, Georgia to satisfy her growing customer base. Harvey says she expects Heavenly Sweets to continue to prosper as she will continue to follow Gods lead and seek him for guidance. “I am my own worst critic which makes me somewhat a perfectionist. I look at some creations that everyone thinks are great and I still see more that I can do to make it better.,” she says. “You never know when God will call you to do something that’s why it is important to listen to his voice. Grace is available for anybody who has faith.” h

Adding Value To Your Business
A note to my fellow barbers, stylists and like-talented professionals. What’s unique among you and your clients? Could it be the number of years you have provided them services? Perhaps it’s your location? Is it the inspiring conversations you have? Or maybe it’s just your skills in doing what you do. That’s Hair! These are all valuable qualities that aid in acquiring and retaining long term clients yet lacks in the proper formula to delivering success. As a barber/stylist, a key part of your business is to add value to your clients. Value is not only rendering a requested service but also includes the do’s and don’ts of the service, along with which products work best to keep your clients looking ‘fly’ until their next appointment. Remember that your clients respect your advice. Taking the time to inform and educate your clients about available products to meet their needs not only adds value to them but also serves as key to maximizing retail sales in your professional business!
Key Points
Educate yourself on products. Become knowledgeable about the difference in brands and how each works best for your clientele. Understand hair textures and product variations. Comprehending such characteristics will help to: - Drive your consultation with the customer - Predict finishing results Educate and understand the needs of your customers. Focus on doing things from beginning to end by helping them to understand the ‘what’, ‘why’ & ‘how’ concerning their visit. Doing so will help provide clarity about: - What services you recommend. (ie: Short-do vs. a Two-strain twist.) - Why you are using a certain product. (A deep cleansing shampoo vs. some type of finishing product.) - Why it’s best to perform a specified technique in achieving a desired result depending on hair type or desired style. (ie: Explanation of curling the hair nightly &/or wrapping it before bed.)
Do Not discount the fact that clients who buy retail are more likely to be repeat customers! Clients are looking to buy retail but need someone to inform and educate them on how to achieve the best results. Their appointment is a perfect time to provide a mini session on products to fit their needs which, in turn, will promote more sells in the future! At the same time, do not forget that ‘Honesty Is Key’. If a suggested product can’t make them look like Halle Berry, let them know that! Always strive to master your craft by taking additional training classes. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. The work you put into your craft will pay off
Guidance for the Client
When it comes to the everyday care of our hair and skin, let’s admit it -- most of the time we miss it! For this very reason, I’ve collaborated with a number of reputable stylists, barbers, and skin care specialists to help provide practical, everyday care tips on maintaining and achieving the professional look they provide. By outlining some of the more pressing concerns via a Question and Answer format, we’ve responded by providing guidance to help guide you to healthier hair and skin now.
22
Q A
Questionnaire for the Client
My hair tends to lack moisture or becomes dry and brittle, do you have any recommendations to correct this problem?
Because our hair type generally does not require a daily wash regimen, it is important to maintain moisture. We recom mend using a moisture shampoo especially for dry or brittle hair. Sulfate-free shampoos are a great choice as they tend to provide a gentle cleanse without stripping the hair of essential oils. (D.I.Y. tip: To mimmic a salon-worthy deep conditioning treatment, use a hydrating conditioner, apply a plastic cap and sit under a hooded or steam dryer for 15-25 minutes per your hair type. Or made simpler, appy your leave-in conditioner and wrap with a warm wet towel. Either way, the results should be well pleasing!)
Q A
Do steer clear of thick moisturizers as they tend to clog the scalp! Instead, stick with light moisturizing products, particularly those that list to soften, moisturize & detangle. Do look for products that can hydrate and penetrate quickly into the cuticle layer - giving the hair what it needs. In addition to a moisturizing shampoo, continue your hair regimen by using a conditioning hair & scalp oil which will add nutrients to the hair and scalp. My stylist/barber suggested a product during my appointment for at-home use to maintain my look. Due to time and money, I declined. Is there such a difference between buying and using professional products versus buying from a beauty supply store? I thought beauty supply stores carry most professional styling products.
Yes, there is a difference! The products your stylist/barber uses to create your look are of professional quality. Professional products generally consist of smaller molecules that penetrate the hair more thoroughly, resulting in less product use but providing far better and lasting results. No beauty supply store product can mimic such results!
Q A Q A
Invest in professional products. Not only will you achieve the appealing look provided by your stylist/barber, you will gain savings by steering clear of beauty store knock-offs that pale in comparison. Speak with your hair care professional about the products available to fit your needs and your budget. By having assessed your specific need, they can also offer professional alternatives to help offset costs until the recommended product is within your budget. Now that I have the right products, how do I achieve and maintain my professional look between appointments? First of all, know that a great stylist will gladly welcome the opportunity to guide you in proper product use. When using heating tools, a good rule of thumb is to keep usage to a minimum. And equally as important, be sure to set the temperature to the lowest setting possible for completing your look. To help protect your hair, we strongly suggest that you wrap the hair nightly. Go with a silk wrap, du-rag, or satin cap for this purpose. Keep in mind, though you may not achieve the exact look produced by your stylist/barber, by proper product use and protecting your hair, at the very least you should experience the same feel. I shave regularly. How do I combat ingrown hairs or razor bumps and keep my skin healthy?
Concerning the face, we suggest applying a hot towel for treatment before shaving, followed by a warm lather. Likewise, do another hot towel treatment after shaving to open the pores coupled with the use of an astringent to close the pores. Following the astringent, finish your regimen by also applying some type of bump control. Problems with ingrown hairs? If ingrown hairs are especially burdensome, start a habit to use a bump control or do a hot towel steam to your face nightly to aid in preventing bumps. To you self-shavers/cutters, for the record, we DO NOT suggest this method of styling! But if you must, we do encourage you to consult your hair/skin care specialist first. Doing so can help provide valuable insight involving the proper techniques in executing a healthier and praiseworthy result. h

Tyler Young By Terry L. Watson Photo by Tyler Young

t just 16 years old, Tyler Young is honored to be the first African American vice president of High Point Christian Academy. As the son of a minister (Bishop Terry Young), he has always led a life of leadership amongst his family and peers. While his future appears to be very promising, he says there is nothing more meaningful than his relationship and faith in God. “My father being a pastor, the Lord’s word has always been a pivotal element in my upbringing,” he says. When he was eleven years old, Young recalls attending a service at his fathers church. The lesson being taught focused on the consequences of sin. “Primarily eternal damnation struck a chord,” he says. “The thought of being forever isolated from loved ones and the Lord and the torture that would accompany it literally put the fear of God in me, and in that moment the importance of salvation truly hit me.” Since that day, Young says he has learned to appreciate his faith and its aspects more than merely the consequences of sin. His father instilled in him Christian faith and exhausted himself to provide through his ceaseless work, never mentioning his own personal wants and needs. “He has taught me many lessons vital to the development of a young, Christian, Black male that I would otherwise be deprived of. He’s always potrayed the role of a great father, one that he never had,” says Young.

Young says he wishes to set an example with his lifestyle. “No matter who you are, there are no boundaries that can restrain you. I want to be an exemplification of how it’s possible to attain your goals in this world and enjoy everything that God has placed in it without having to conform to the world’s standards, and without sacrificing who you are or your passions,” he explains. Since registering with College Board he has received countless letters from various colleges. Young is entertaining different options, abut he is yet to decide where he would like to further pursue his education, or what he would like to major in. “It’s something I will have to continue to pray about, and trust that God will lead me where he needs me, and where I can prosper,” he says. h

Tabata and Boxing
A Winning Combination to Help Improve the Performance of Football Players By Jameel McGregor Photo by Jameel McGregor
I
f you are an athlete trying to keep yourself conditioned or a coach seeking to add variety to your pre-season training program, try implementing Tabata and Boxing Training into your team’s exercise program.
What is Tabata? Tabata is a method of training that was introduced by Izumi Tabata in 1996. It still remains popular among fitness enthusiasts and athletes looking for something other than ordinary conditioning. The method of training consists of 20 seconds of an explosive high intensity exercise followed by a 10 second rest. This is great for football players because the average play last from (5-15) seconds. If you repeat this cycle seven times, it will give you four minutes of intense exercise. The goal is to complete as many reps as possible before you rest. Here is an exercise regimen to try: Speed Jump Ropes Battle Ropes Speed Ladder Drill Punching a heavy bag Resistance band sprints 15-20lb Medicine Ball Slams Squat Jumps Boxing is another great way to condition athletes on the grid iron. Think about it; a great boxer needs agility, quickness, speed, strength, power, mental quickness and toughness. These are the same characteristics that football players need to be effective. Boxing also trains the upper and lower body, which are both crucial to performance on the field. Although some people may think of boxing as an upper body sport and football as mainly a lower body sport, when you examine a boxer more closely you notice that the lower body also plays a significant role in delivering power punches. In football, the upper body needs to be strong to hold on to the ball, throw the ball or move an opponent to the side when making a tackle. The upper body is also engaged as a player to sprints up and down the field since the arms play a key role in propelling the body forward when running. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Tabata Training and Boxing provide great anaerobic and aerobic activity, which benefits any conditioning program. These two methods combined offer a one-two combination that can help get your football players into the best shape. Each exercise is done for 20 seconds, rest 10 seconds then you repeat the exercise seven more times before you move to the next exercise. This will give you eight rounds for a total of 4 minutes. Each exercise needs to be high intensity, fast and explosive. h

SILER 32
The
Mad Hatter By Tonya Dixon Photos by PerfectLenz Photography
B
y trade Keith Siler is a master barber. His skills run the gamut. He has been perfecting his craft and business acumen for over 10 years. But his passions don’t stop there; they include toping the fresh cut with an equally stylish hat.
Siler is a hat man. Plain and simple. It could be considered his trademark. He almost always wears a hat. As a matter of fact one would be hard pressed to see him without one. From fitted to snapback to Kangol; he dons them all. “I’m just a hat guy,” says Siler. “I wear a hat just about every day. I think I got that from my father. Hats can make the gentleman or bring out your tougher side, whichever look you are going for.” It’s his fascination and love of hats that gave him the vision to start his own custom-made hat line, Mad Hatter. He says it’s Mad Hatter because he has “mad” hats. Black, white, red, baseball, beanie and fedora. He has them all. It wasn’t until the Greensboro native ventured beyond the city limits that he really got the complete vision of how to combine his business savvy and passion for hats. While sailing the high sears on a vacation cruise, Siler encountered a gentleman wearing the perfect example of the type of hat that he wanted to offer to others. It was “tight,” he says. To his amazement, he learned the gentleman was already in the custom hat business. It was all Siler needed. He immediately made the connection and feverishly began brainstorming. “I knew we didn’t have anything like what I saw in this area, so I stared figuring out how I could do it here,” he says. It was already his passion, so all he had to do was work out the logistics - contractors, manufacturers, sales. He has worked out the kinks since his initial decision to go into the business and is consistently developing his product line and building his clientele. Keeping with his personality, Siler decided if he were going to do jump into the custom hat business he wanted to do it “big.” Mad Hatter has to be the go to line for all things hats. Patrons can expect a one-on-one consultation with Siler. It’s the client’s opportunity to discuss what they want. Styles are chosen, colors are picked. Siler will take all the appropriate measurements and handle the calculations. Within a very short time, clients will be showcasing their very own, custom-designed and custom-fitted, fresh off the press head gear. Currently, the Mad Hatter line focuses solely on men’s hats, but Siler is intent on expanding in the near future to including a universal line as well as a woman’s line. For Siler, the bottom line is that Mad Hatter will be synonymous with quality, authentic, tailor-made hats for the sophisticated and the stylish. h
The models featured are Eric Person and Markee Henderson. The line they are wearing in the Summer Line (Straw Line). Keith also offers a Winter and Fall Line that inclides Beaver and Felt hats. To purchase your hat, or for more information, please contact Keith Siler at 336-686-4201

Totally Stoned, LLC
Custom Rhinestone Design & Apparel
R
By Terry L. Watson Photos by Howard Gaither
obin Russell of Winston-Salem is a woman who wears many hats. She is a mother, a wife, business partner and business owner. Her venture is Totally Stoned, LLC, a rhinestone apparel company that specializes in custom designed items. Russell says her products consist of anything that can be rhinestoned including tee shirts, purses, jeans and more. Russell says that most of her clients are usually seeking rhinestone t-shirts but she has sold personalized ribbons, pants, personalized bath robes, tote bags, jackets, stockings, baby hats and onesies. Additionally, Totally Stoned offers logo design as well. Her client base includes business owners that use personalized shirts as a means of advertising and also non-business owners who may just want shirts for relatives, brides and everyday wear.
Totally Stoned started unofficially in 2009. “I needed some items created for my wedding and I asked a young lady to do them for me. She was very rude and she did not have an idea of customer service. I decided I was not going to pay someone who treated me poorly to do something I was sure I could do for myself,” says Russell. That was the beginning of her business and she took her ideas and combined them with her own idea of creativity and began making rhinestoned inspired items for family and friends. In 2011, Russell obtained her limited liability company, and Totally Stoned was officially opened for business. “When I started designing my line, I never intended for it to be a business. I made some items for myself out of necessity,” says Russell. “When other people started seeing the product and after seeing their reactions, I was prompted to take the necessary steps to make this a real business.” Basically, Russell turned a hobby into a business. She noticed there was a need for bling and knew how to meet that need. “I absolutely love the look on people’s faces when they see their shirts for the first time. Whether they get their unborn child’s name on a garment, their son’s name and football team name and number on a shirt, or when a business owner sees their logo; the reaction always leaves me fulfilled,” she says. “I love being a business owner. I love the freedom it brings and how it allows me to choose when I work and how much I work,” she says. “Due to enjoying what I do, I work in my business as much as possible.” For the greater portion of the existence of Totally Stoned, Russell says they were doing all of the designs by hand. That process she says was challenging and very tedious because more often than not, she would have multiple orders. Though there are some designs that are still done by hand, she now relies on the assistance of a rhinestone machine which helps with her increasing amount of large orders. Owning and managing a business requires hard work and having constant faith in God. “God has impacted my life in so many ways. He has impacted this business by keeping me focused, ushering certain people in my life that have been a blessing to the business,” says Russell. “I do not believe in coincidences. Everything that has happened with Totally
Quality Beyon Stoned, has been according to God’s plan. He continuously allows me to meet the right people to keep this business expanding. I am truly blessed.” Russell says that after moving to Winston-Salem from Ohio, no one knew her. She relied on building relationships with her immediate community. “People took a chance on me. Totally Stoned would not be in business and would not exist without these people. They are our greatest asset,” she says. Additionally Russell says her family keeps her inspired. “I like trying new things and pushing my abilities to the limit. I know the more I do, the more customers I will have which will benefit my family.” h

microwave our mindsets. Glen Khalen says “We have become a culture of sound bites, short attention spans, expecting instant gratification, and are missing out on deeper meaning and understating of the world we live in.” Physically, we are dazzled by the magic pill, or potions that can transform us with no work tomorrow. After conducting a search on the internet for “fastest way to lose weight” and the top results were “ How to Lost Weight Fast and Safely, The Best Way to Lose Weight in a Week, and Quick Weight Loss,- Lose 20lbs of Fat in 30 days”. When looking for love, many have resorted to speed dating and online dating. If that’s not enough, we have drive through wedding chapels. One chapel I discovered has three choices; Fast, Faster, Fastest all under $300. What about a drive through funeral home? In Compton California, Adams Funeral Home says “You can come by after work, and you don’t need to deal with parking. You can sign the book outside and the family knows that you paid your respects. It’s a convenience thing.” Many individuals also have that same quick fix, “I dream of Genie” attitude toward our finances. The truth is, success is not a fairy tale, and it’s not a secret. You can’t sit on your couch and imagine checks coming. Success is not a destination, it’s a journey and a process. Dan Hardy says “success is rented and the rent is due every day.” I believe the biggest financial mistake most people make is dependence. The best person to take care of you, is you. Dependence on others allows “outside” factors to control your life. If you want to lose weight, you must eat accordingly, exercise, and develop some new disciplines. If you want financial independence, embrace time and consistency, and develop some new disciplines also. Take control of what you can control. Your life is built on the seemingly, small decisions you have made up to this point. You cant go back, but its never too late to start.

All we need to do is go to our computer or iPad to find out any bit of information we want or need, instantly. We now live in a society that must have everything quicker and faster. If you have to wait more than seven minutes, it’s considered “insulting and shameful” according to father Michael D. Jordan. Don’t get me wrong, I am very supportive of technology.
