Personal Statement With a devoted a hear t to the field of architecture, I am writing to apply for acceptance into the Msc Architectural and Urban design at your esteemed institution. I studied in Landscape Architecture during my undergraduate years in Southwest Jiaotong University in China. I developed my interests in the relationship of architecture and city context because of some projects about architecture and urban design. During that time, Peter Zumthor, Rafael Moneo, Wang Shu with their critical attitudes towards architecture and culture had a lot of influences on me. I realized that architects’ duty is not to just reproduce the historical scene, and the maintenance of historical authenticity should not be the only solution to conserve the culture of a city. After graduated, I continued my study in architectural design in Southeast University for my strong interests and enthusiasm in architecture. In two years’ study there, I got comprehensive and rigorous academic training in architectural design and theory. In Southeast University, I also participated in some joint workshops. One was a joint workshop of urban design with University of Colorado. In the workshop, I dealt with the challenge of waterfront revival of Yangtze River in topographic architectural way. The other one was a detailing seminar with University of Minnesota, which provided me a chance to visit the United States. Moreover the issue of material and construction arose my interests since then. By reading many books about construction and studying cases, I had a deeper insight in the construction and order. I wish to pursue further study for the following reasons: Firstly, in seeking for new approaches and solutions in the design process, I frequently found my knowledge confined for my former academic background of Landscape Architecture. I realized I should pursue further study to sharpen understanding, to stimulate more original ideas, and to establish my own systematic way in architectural design. Secondly, experiences of joint workshop arose my yearning for architectural education internationally. The interactivity in classes impressed me deeply. I believe more exposure to different thinking can help me jump out of stereotypes in design and improve my creativity. Throughout my study and practice of architecture, I'm interested in following points: Culture and Technology: Architecture contains meanings rooted in culture, and technology is an important tool in seeking new expressions of architecture. Materials and construction: How to conserve the traditional crafts, regional characters in a modern way. City Complex: It is a miniature of the complexity of cities. It reflects the comprehensive relationships of city environment, architectural spaces, traffics and infrastructures. Social Structure and Physical Design: The physical form is the external reflection of its internal structure. Forms, features and functions of a city are related closely to its internal social structure. I am very interested in social research and its application to physical space design. I aim to be a professional architect in my career. I wish further my study to develop a deeper understanding of principles and theory that underlie the creation of architecture.I believe my design and analysis abilities can be greatly improved by earning a rigorous and challenging education at your department.

The topographic architecture in essence is a kind of architecture that reflects the relationship between the architecture and the environment. What people focus on is how natural terrain and the artificial architecture coexist harmoniously. But in fact the trul coexistence seems impossible. In analogy to the earth art, the self-expression of topographic architecture is an attitude towards nature . In Chinese traditional thought “The harmony between man and nature” is the best Philosophical answer to the topographic architecture. This is the starting point of this design. Through the design, we not only merge the building into the environment but also merge human activities and minds into the nature. This is the topographical view expressed in this building.
Meditation: Meditation is the major function of this building while housing is the secondary. The meaning of “abandon oneself to nature ” in ancient China is " thinking through the nature " in addition to "enjoy the nature and express feelings ". In the painting of Narrow Room Map , a cabin is between the mountain, and providing a place for people to meditate is its function . Ruins: If the building dies, trees grow into it, and the walls of the courtyard are covered with moss and weed. Then this building can be called a natural building. In the Chinese concept of “ harmony between man and nature ”, the natural building must coexist with the nature since it first has been built .

Lanscape : The site located in the edge of a city where city constructions connect with natural environments. Viewing towards the nature, this building disappears in the environment. It looks like basements of the surrounding buildings. Viewing towards the city, it integrates with the city as its ruins. Meditation Space:two kinds of spaces constitute the meditative architecture. One kind of space is that “abandon oneself to nature in the China culture; the other is in which one could thinking and reflecting alone. Material : we use concrete as its structure and surface material to suggest its location in the city. Moreover, the concrete will blend with the site as time passes by. 5

Location The site locates at the edge of the Helsinki city, so this design began with the thought of putting a remarkable period to the city.
Access Site is under the presure of different types of accesses. Publicity: a communal facility with museum, terminal and restaurant Privacy: consideration of museum security Traspotation: truck line already exists.
View from Park
Landmark As a important public facility contributing to the city, Guggenheim museum could be a landmark in the flat city. However, the height limitation(72.5m) shows its attitude to the city culture.
Public Space It is important to connect public space together, to provide uninterruptable space for activities.
Texture The shape and volumn is refer to the historic city block, which would be understated and remarkable at the same time.

Seperation Under the consideration between publicity and p r i v a c y, m u s e u m i s seperated into two parts. One is the podium which is public and totally free; the other is charged for exhibition. Public Space 1 The public podium contains free temporary exhibition, per formance, education, terminal, dinning and cafe.
Public Space 2 It is more than a interior street which provides many kinds of public activities.

Nowadays, the high density building is not a difficult matter but a frightening and daunting artificiality due to the Great Leap Forwards development of Shenzhen, China. Behind this phenomenon, one problem is the lost of interpersonal behavior because of those narrow spaces; another is large numbers of repeatitive buildings make cities boring and oppressive spaces. How to maintain complexity in high density buildings is the arch enemy .
Self-organizing construction provides a solution to this problem. And this is the charm of the self-organizing construction.
It is extremely complecate no matter the building group itself or activities in the building. However, the unavoidable problem of complexity is the chaos hidden behind it.
..
This design star ts from this point of view, exploring the organization form of high density buildings. With the regard of that the building is not as building itself but is a logic of construction and behavior .
In order to avoid unnecessary confusion,as long as to the sustainable development of Architecture , the found of management board is essential. Not only as a building, iblard acts as a city at the same time. This design leads to a functional system with the hope of becoming a living entity .
The word "IBLARD" comes from the paintings of a Japanese ar tist, who tried to Instead of containing more people in a limited space , the draw a romatic and mysterious aim of the iblard-city is to create more behaviors in the paradise with self-organization. limited space . 14

IBLARD: an architecture as a city. 1.BIRTH It is not a building or a city when IBARD city is first built. It's just a structure standing on the field. Including open spaces and public facilities, IBLARD city started to make an impression by providing space of activities.

2.GROWING 2.1 As the impression growing deeper and deeper, it becomes a land mark of the city. Then IBLARD begins to open construction. Some citizens and investors accomadate in the IBLARD. They design and build their own buildings with IBLARD architects. The MBIC(Management Board of Iblard City) is founded at the same time under the surport of Republicanism Utopia. 2.2 At the beginning they'd like to build shops and offices around the public facilities, in order to make more profits. And the residents prefer to choose some places where are more quiet and cleaner. Although the MBIC has a blur consideration of function zoning, they never take it as a bible.
S ACE
3.REGENERATION When residents moving out from IBLARD, or there is a need for regeneration, the MBIC will convene the neighbors together, to discuss the next construction, in order to reduce the conflict of regeneration. The Public Environment is highly protected. Although there is <Regulations of building regeneration in Iblard city> as a working measure, the replacement is still a big problem to the MBIC.

4. DEATH IBLARD city dies with the recession of modernization. People don't need high density spaces any more because of the depopulation. After IBLARD dies, the MBIC decides to restore it into the status of its birth ------ a giant structure. It is covered by plants and becomes a part of the environment.
16
SOLAR ENERGY The Iblard City uses solar as electric energy for public facilities, and encourages residents (not force) to use solar energy too. Iblard intends to be a low carbon building, but the process is still in discussion.
PLUBLIC PLATFORMS The public platforms is maybe the most popular out door space in Iblard. There are roof greening, wooden platforms and paths. As the space is abundant and delightful, many activities and events are held on it.
PLUBLIC FACILITIES Public facilities are born with Iblard City. The income of Iblard is mainly used on them. The employees include normal workers from MBIC and local volunteers. However, as a giant organization, the updating and maintenance are so difficult for the MBIC, which acturally brings many complain.
COURTYARDS There are some cour tyards in Iblard city, mainly used as landscape and public activities. It is maybe the most expensive land in Iblard.
OVERPASSES The overpasses is the most spectacular scenery of Iblard. When people walk down through it or up on it, they can acturally feel the passion of modernization and high density. It is the Culture of Congestion as Rem Koolhaas said, that might be only happened in China.
STREETS Although the master plan of Iblard has a guide of these streets, as a result of self- organization, the streets are mainly depended on the construction. The solution of the "out of control" phenomenon is "try to take control untill it hurts". Because, no one would know what is Iblard City going to be.

Demolition and Construction of Culture How to preserve culture if some historical buildings have to be demolished? In current Chinese architecture design, operation methods of cultural buildings can be divided into following four categories due to architects' different understanding of culture : Nowadays in China, modernization and globalization are consensus social background. People there gradually enjoy the modern conveniences but at the mean time they also want to maintain "Chinese Culture" in the storm of globalization. Under tihs circumstance, reflection of regionalism becomes an inevitable issue especially in areas of architecture and city planning. At the stage of rapid urbanization in China, Urban Economic indexes such as urbanization ratio , GDP and annual construction amount have become hot topics in city planning. Ironically, "China" has been translated into “where to demolish”, in order to express public’s helplessness of the huge volumns of demolition. In the seemingly endless circumstance of demolition, cases are ver y common that many shabby but historical and cultural districts have been demolished to give way to high-rise buildings. Of course, the purpose of this essay is not to oppose and criticize the demolition. This ar ticle just wants to discuss the following issue dialectically:
Historical Collage Building: It is modern architecture in essence. In order to show cultural concerns, architects collage historical elements on the building in terms of detail, joint or elevation. Antique Imitation Building: To construct Antique buildings by imitating the form of ancient architecture and using modern structure and material.
According to Leslie .A. White, the definition of culture is “Culture’s beginning is dependent on the use of symbols, including objects, behaviors, thoughts and attitudes”(1988). All the four factors above can be used to convey cer tain cultural information in architectural ways. To genneral people , Antique Imitation Buildings can provide more cultural information to them than those Historic Abstract Buildings . And every type of the four factors above has it's own method of operation which can lead to successful works and also vulgar works .
Neo-building with Ancient Technology: Use the constr uction methods of historical buildings to build, complying the structures, materials and details of Chinese ancient construction techniques. Historical Abstraction Building:Abstract every elements of historical buildings, and use modern techniques to re-present buildings oriented to the history.
Culture is a symbol. Each symbol will bring cultural indication and stimulation whether it is metaphor in Xiangshan Campus(by Wang Shu), or simile in Chinese Pavilion (2010 expo) designed by He Jingtang. These buildings more or less would be labeled "China", which are good for so-called Chinese culture .
However, we always ignore Leslie's latter par t of that sentence, "Object, behavior, thoughts and attitudes". The understanding, deconstr uction and reduction of history can not only rely on objects, although objects are the most direct way of expression. Historical Collage Buildings and Antique Imitation architectures are the most direct way to express history by extracting visual historical elements. Through this way, people can receive symbolic stimulation directly in material level . Neo-building with Ancient Technology maintains respect to ancient techniques, materials, and spaces in a completely reproductive way. Those buildings not only manufact physical objects accurately but also inherit abstract culture. However, Historic Abstraction buildings offer more possibility of operation methods with behavior, thoughts and attitudes for architectural design. Architects can also abstract architectural space, human behavior and social relationships and reflect them into architectural design.
If the goal of the design is pursuing history and culture, then architects' reflections on historical behavior, thoughts and attitudes are essential. In other words, in historical architecture design, the best way to get rid of the bondage of historical forms(not opposed to forms) is to find the social relationship hidden behind historical forms, and use architectural ways to express it . Using historical forms to express Chinese cultural concern is superficial, and Chinese culture which is represented and inherited at the end is superficial. And what behind architectural culture such as spaces, behavior, relationships, philosophy will die . If Chinese architectural symbols stay only in “brackets” and “slope roofs ”, many years later our offsprings cannot read Chinese philosophy such as “Abandon oneself to nature” and “harmony between nature and people”from Chinese architecture.
Then the Chinese culture we have inherited is degenerative. In conclusion, the urban design of "Shuijingfang" aim to find a way to represent cultural architecture, in which we can show the behavior, thoughts and attitudes of Ancient China.

Shuijingfang is a traditional block in the southeast of Chengdu old town, which was famous for wine-making industry by 600 years ago. However, since the traditional manner of wine-making has been replaced by the morden industry, Shuijingfang area is declining day by day, so that it becomes a slum area where could be demolished in a short time. This urban design is a discussion of the renewal of Shuijingfang area based on the thought above.

History In history, outside the east gate of Chengdu city where Fu river and Nan river came together, there were many scenic spots and temples around this area. This area have always been a traditional recreation resort of chengdu city, so called "Scenic Spots in East Gate ". Recreation Activities have facilitated commercial and trade around this area for about 1000 years. About 600 years ago, Shuijingfang district was born in this special environment , and until today it is still full of vitality.

Docks From about 1000 years ago, Chengdu city formed the pattern of "Two river embrace the city" . There were lots of docks at river banks where the two rivers came together. In ancient Chengdu, the main transport to the outside world was water transport. And the most primary docks of chengdu city also located here.Water transport promoted business trade's thriving here.
Wine Shuijingfang district, outside the old east gate of Chengdu city , is an archeaological site of wine workshop. As one of the oldest wine workshop in the world, shuijingfang was established in around 1400A.D., which have kept fuctioning for about 600 years .Its layout as"workshop behind shopis the only case that found in ancient China.

Node In the instance of high density, nodes used to be so tight. However, it was still the concentration area of community activities.
2007 As we can see from the GoogleMap above, Shuijingfang has been absorbed by urbanization since 2001. The urban demolition and renewal seems unstoppable. On one hand, the wine-making industry has died out for long time, and Shuijingfang turns out to be a slum. On the other hand, this site has advantages of good conditions of traffic and location. So the question is "how to protect the local culture if the demolition is necessary". At the first beginning, the designer has to read the context by searching for old books and maps, interviewing the local residents, surveying and mapping the site . Then six important elements of the site are abstracted. Ground Floor Survey

The form of "SI" comes from the prototype we used to abstract. The facade should be totally open as the old wine shop. The ancient chinese buildings have their own modulus due to the limitation of wood structure. The design of "SI" still remains the idea of modulazation. However, as the structure is no longer a problem, the module has been changed in order to fit the modern fuction.
23
The form of YUAN is closed and inward. It is mostly made of bricks and rocks, which can block crowds and noises, making a peaceful space for users. As this design wants to keep the memory of the history, YUANs are mainly based on original sites of old buildings. Therefore when comparing the layout of this design and the ancient map, people can still find traces of courtyards where wine were made and activities happened. 22
