theFEED food & drink culture :: MARQUEE LIGHTS UP THE LANDING: The upscale urban bar and restaurant Marquee at the Landing takes its rightful place to make The Landing the place to wine & dine. As of now, it is open six-days-a-week for dinner. Although come the new year, there are plans to expand to include lunch. The chef-driven scratch kitchen is led by Edwin Matteo, formerly of Eddie Merlot’s. And insiders know his favorite item on the Marquee menu is the 14-ounce Tomahawk pork chop prepared sous-vide and served with a horseradish sweet potato puree, apple mostarado, broccolini, potatoserrano puree with a apple bourbon demi glaze. Other house specialties include handcrafted cocktails and charcuterie boards with 10 meat and cheese options to build your own board or go big and get the grand board with the chef’s picks. And if Matteo’s board choices are on par with his pork chop, there is no chance you will not get the best selections. 123 Columbia Street, marqueeatthelanding.com
:: NOUVEAU DAY: Each morning brings a new day, but the third Thursday in November (November 18, 2021) is an especially new day as it is Beaujolais Nouveau Day. It is the day of the year when these limited edition red wines are released. And this year, due to supply chain issues, these wines are even more likely to have very limited availability. According to Jeff Armstrong, sommelier and owner of WineTime, Beaujoulais Nouveau wines are from France’s Beaujolais region. Under French law, these wines are released at 12:01 am on the designated day, just weeks after the grapes have been harvested. “Beaujolais Nouveau wines are not to be aged. They are meant to be consumed right away,” said Armstrong. They are meant to be consumed as a young wine, within 5 – 7 months from the time the wine is bottled.
The Gamay grapes that make Beaujolais Nouveau are handpicked, as are all grapes in the Beaujolais region. The Gamay is the only grape permitted in Beaujolais. And Beaujolais Nouveau wine has an intense, brilliant cherry color with purplish tints with a red and black berry aroma. This wine originated about a century ago as a “cheap and cheerful drink” produced by locals to celebrate the end of harvest season. “The Beaujolais Nouveau’s flavor profile makes it a perfect wine for Thanksgiving or Christmas which are typically hard meals to pair with wines because there are so many flavors in the meals,” said Armstrong. “And the Beaujolais Nouveau is made with whole-berry fermentation, which is a technique that preserves the fresh, fruity
quality of the grapes without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.” In the 1970s, Beaujolais Nouveau Day became an annual international event, and this was likely due to one specific winemaker George Duboeuf who created it as a marketing initiative to help boost sales of its wine. And each year, the vineyard has a contest to select an artist to create artwork specifically for the label of its Beaujolais Nouveau bottle. This year the winner is American Felice Kite’s For the Love of Flowers. “As an artist, I create art to portray emotions through color,” she said. “My painting serves as a reflection of the freshness and vibrancy found in the juice of the harvest.” WineTime, 6210 Covington Road, 260.459.9463, winetime.us

his time of year is filled with
thinking about what we are thankful for, but have you thought about who you are thankful for? Who helped you become the person you are today? Who helps to make your day a little better? Who taught you a valuable life lesson? Who is the unsung hero in your life? How about celebrating the people who came to mind when answering the above questions by writing a handwritten “thank you” note?
Cards made by local artist Anastasia MCNabb, available @ twofuntomatoes.etsy.com
Use the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to write five handwritten “thank you” cards to these individuals. Maybe even write a thank you card to an ex-boyfriend? Girlfriend? Or spouse? Or what about an unsavory boss who helped you learn a few important life lessons? We learn things through both positive and negative life experiences.

It is the little things in life, like these small acts of appreciation that can a big impact. Research shows actively appreciating the formative people in your life, past and present, leads to a lasting increase in your level of happiness. It has also been scientifically proven that the act of writing the thank you card not only makes the recipient feel good, but also improves the writer’s health. And if one piece of writing advice may be offered, it’s knowing there is a difference between appreciation and gratitude. Appreciation is about acknowledging the perceived value of something or someone; it is more of a cognitive act. Gratitude is more affective. It is about feeling thankful, either as a direct beneficiary or on behalf of someone else. So, let a few individuals know (in detail) how they have made a difference in your life and end your letters with the two most important words... THANK YOU!

EDITOR’S PICK: I have a confession. HUB26O’s favorite Chief Pooch Officer Osby Harrison plays second fiddle to the pooch that truly stole my heart. That forever spot belongs to Snoopy. For my ninth birthday, I received a 10-inch plush Snoopy. And he took his rightful place as my childhood Lovie. And truth be told, I still have the very loved, worn and little-less stuffed Snoopy tucked safely in a box under my bed. So, when I heard about the limitededition Vera Bradley + Peanuts collaboration with two very special fabric patterns – Ski Jump Snoopy and Ski Slope Snoopy, made of reclaimed fibers and recycled cotton – I was overjoyed. And the selection of totes, backpacks, bags, throws and PJs are made in classic Vera Bradley style. This $130 backpack has been ordered, and in early 2022, I will be out-and-about in Fort Wayne donning my ode to my favorite Beagle, while walking everyone’s favorite Portuguese Waterdog. Now, if only Vera Bradley would make saddlebags in the Snoopy-printed fabric for Osby to wear when he is out delivering copies of HUB26O… verabradley.com
