I

I used to hate Valentine’s Day. I felt so much pressure to create a valentine card or gift that set the right loving tone — easy on the love, if the relationship was new. Try to avoid repetition, if it was a long-term relationship.

This year there is no man in my life — and suddenly I am loving Valentine’s Day. I’m making valentine cards for each of my family members and a few close friends as well. Turns out, it’s great fun to have a special day to remind friends and family of how much I love them.

My valentine is a card (consisting of three separate layers) that becomes three-dimensional when assembled. I call it a heart-y diorama because the first layer has a large window cut out that allows viewing the second and third layers, much like a diorama. The key is to stagger the length of each layer, making sure that the third (and longest) layer will fit into the envelope.

The largest, standard-sized envelope that I can mail, without extra postage, is 6 by 9 inches, so my third layer is just a fraction smaller and is decorated with XX’s and OO’s. The middle layer is a 1-1/2-by 7-3/4-inch strip with hearts glued to the top edge. The front layer is 6 by 7 inches with a large window cut out of the middle, and is decorated with valentine-themed embellishments. All three layers have small, matching holes punched in the corners and the back of the last layer contains my heartfelt message.

Assembly is easy: Align all of the layers on the left side and fasten them together with small, colored brads. Attach two brads to the right side of the front cover so that the card remains flat for mailing. When your card arrives, your loved one need only open the prongs of the brads on the right side and poke them through the second and third layers to create the arc that makes the card three-dimensional.

Once I stopped worrying about how much love to share, I discovered that Valentine’s Day afforded the perfect opportunity to connect in a loving way with my family and friends. Who knew it would be so simple?

Room goes from frosty to restful

Monochromatic schemes don’t have to be boring; in fact, they have great potential to impact Candice Olson

This once-frosty bedroom has become a restful retreat in which one can relax, have quiet time and turn up the heat.

The nicest bedrooms exude a warm and intimate vibe. And that’s exactly what clients Beatrice and Philippe sought for their own boudoir.

The couple, who live in a large home with their two children, spent three long years renovating their house. But they ran out of steam when they got to their master bedroom. The space was cold and cavernous — and they couldn’t figure out a way to bring any warmth to the space.

I decided that a restful, monochromatic design was the ideal solution for this project. And I selected an ethereal, neutral color palette of cream, beige, gray and vanilla to help me along.

While some people think that monochromatic schemes are boring, the truth is that they can have great impact if executed properly. The secret to creating a stylish and interesting monochromatic design is to incorporate a mixture of patterns and textures; this will deliver the visual and physical comfort.

The bedroom had a vaulted ceiling that I wanted to showcase with a great lighting fixture. So I kicked things off by visiting one of my favorite lighting showrooms and selecting a magnificent polished silver-and-crystal chandelier.

I then painted the space in a warm cream to match the room’s existing neutral carpet and to give things a cohesive look. Next, I mapped out four distinct areas that would all flow together: a sleeping area, a fireside lounge, a sitting room and a vanity area.

I created the sleeping area beneath the vaulted ceiling and against a striking wall of woodgrain paper. I brought in a king-

I then fashioned a delightful fireside lounge on one wall of the bedroom. I wanted to install a gas fireplace, but Philippe wasn’t keen on unsightly gas lines on his new exterior stucco walls, so I put in a wall-mounted, ethanol-burning unit that brings visual warmth and a contemporary element to the space. the fireplace with custom cabinetry that I painted a soft gray.

Across from the bed, by the room’s windows, I created a seating area with a stonecolored sofa, a creamy armchair, a tufted ottoman and a round wooden table. I chose a multitude of accent fabrics in stripes, dots, solids and other patterns for the pillows and drapes, and put down an ivory area rug with a geometrical pattern.

Beside the seating area, I created a little vanity area, which includes a beautiful walnut writing desk, an ornate mirror and a white cane chair. I then flanked the table with sparkling silver-and-crystal sconces that echo the style of the distinctive chandelier.

All that was left to do was find some

stunning accessories. So I headed to a shop known for its eclectic mix of global goodies and chose a variety of accent pieces, including an amazing, white feather headdress from Cameroon that I hung above the couple’s bed. I always say “design is in the details,” and that was certainly true of this project. By playing with texture, pattern and a few dabs of shimmer and shine, I created a dramatic space using a single color palette. The oncefrosty bedroom is now a restful retreat where Beatrice and Philippe can relax, share some quiet time — and turn up the heat.

Whether you want to start from scratch or improve an existing site, designing a landscape can be one of the most rewarding and enlightening projects you’ll ever do.

And dreaming of spring can really help you hang on through the dead of winter.

Good gardens don’t just happen; they’re the results of careful planning. Study your property’s features and decide how they can be used to create an enjoyable outdoor space.

Get your ideas down

Now the fun starts. Come up with three or four preliminary designs. Let your imagination run wild with patios, vegetable gardens, flower beds, whatever. For each design, draw a bubble diagram roughly indicating the shapes and locations of these features. Exact items and perfect graphics aren’t necessary, just “bubble in” rough ideas.

You may find you have to make a hybrid of several different ideas to get everything to work together. Above all, consider the mature size of plants and trees you want to add, or you’re setting yourself up for lots of extra work and expense later.

Make a final copy, figure costs When you find your perfect design, draw it on a clean base map. Also, color the different features for easier visual reference.

Then show it to other gardeners or even a professional landscape designer. A fresh set

of eyes is something of an insurance policy, to help make sure you haven’t overlooked something that could cost you later.

Speaking of cost: It’s time to develop your budget. Actual costs might mean a change in the design. But instead of going back to the drawing board, consider phasing the plan in over time. Figure what you most want and can do immediately, and what can wait until next year. You may find you can have it all, just not all at once.

Good landscape design is the result of a definite process, but it’s not that difficult.

Planning and patience are the hallmarks of gardeners, anyway. Practice them and sooner or later you’ll have the landscape of your dreams.

In March of 2009, Darryl and Sherry Mattson began exploring the idea of building a new home.

They surveyed architectural designs and consulted with construction professionals to formulate a plan to convert their dream into reality. But, not only did the Mattsons need a plan, they also needed a place. After considering several site options, they decided to build on a picturesque piece of ground just footsteps away from their own front door.

The lot on the corner of 745 and B Road, surrounded by Nebraska cropland, was ideal because it wouldn’t require a work commute for Darryl; the Mattsons have been in the business of raising corn, soybeans and black Angus cattle for most of their lives. But that lot had something else that convinced the Mattsons it was the perfect place to build: an enormous, well-established shelterbelt.

Rows and rows of towering Scotch pine and blue spruce trees would provide a scenic backdrop for their new home as well as protection from bad weather. To top it off, they owned the property. There was just one hitch: A house already stood on the site, right where they wanted to build.

Before

It was a vacant, one-story, ranch-style house built in 1970 by Darryl’s parents who had occu pied the home for 37 years. The footprint of the house measured approximately 1,500 square feet with two bedrooms and two baths.

However, the Mattsons had something much roomier in mind.

Their previous farm home across the road, built in the late 1800s, had served the Mattsons well for many years. In fact, Darryl grew up in that home. Yet there were a few things that they were looking for in their next home that the old home just could not provide, such as more square footage.

“I wanted the kitchen to be out of the line of traffic and be my own space,”Sherry said. She went on to explain that in the old house, her kitchen had served not only as a place to prepare meals for the family, but also as a sewing room, a place for family members and friends to congregate, and even a warm space to bring in a shivering newborn calf in the winter.

The Mattsons also wanted comfortable guest rooms so their grandchildren could come for overnight visits, something that their old house could not afford and neither could the two-bedroom ranch house.

in Kearney to see what could be done to transu- form the existing ranch-style house into a bige ger and better home. Peister surveyed the existing structure and went to work on a design that would give the Mattsons the kind of space they wanted. When Peister finished, he presented the Mattsons with blueprints that would convert their one-story ranch house into a two-story s home measuring 3,700 square feet with six bedrooms and 3½ baths. y With final plans in hand, the Mattsons d brought Tim Sorensen on board as general contractor. In November 2009, Sorensen began making all of the necessary preparations for the Mattsons’ extreme home makeover.

On Dec. 16, Sorensen’s crew began removing all of the siding and tearing the roof off of the existing home. Later that afternoon, with demolition complete, they wrapped and prepped the house so they could begin framing and installing new rafters for a much taller and larger structure. t In the interest of green building, optimal insulation applications were used, and new e high-efficiency HVAC units and water heaters - were installed along with numerous other ener-

gy saving updates and additions, including all new windows and doors. Additionally, all of the old electrical wiring was removed, with the couple opting for new wiring, boxes and breaker panels throughout.

It was a complex procedure that took most of 2010 to complete. Yet, throughout the process, the Mattsons said they were very impressed with Sorensen, his crew and all of the subcontractors.

By November, the Mattsons were making themselves comfortable in their new and improved home and making preparations for Thanksgiving. By Christmas, they were able to set the table for 26, with room enough for all of their children and grandchildren.

“In the old house, we would have been in each other’s laps,” Sherry said.

Sherry served Christmas dinner from her new kitchen, which she no longer shares with sewing supplies or cold newborn calves; it’s her space now. “We love the view,” Darryl said.

Sherry’s new kitchen area includes a pantry, mud room and laundry area, and a powder room that Sherry personalized using memorabilia from her past. A main floor bedroom now serves as a sewing room where Sherry can create quilts from new and vintage textiles using current and traditional designs. The Mattsons said the sewing room is not complete, and plans for a center island still are in the works.

Building block furniture offers functional fun

If you liked to play with Legos when you were a kid, you’re in for a treat. Yube Cube, a sort of LEGO for adults, is a new furniture line that features cube furniture that can be assembled and arranged over and over again to suit decorating whims.

Let’s delve deeper.

Each cube is 13 by 13 inches, and the blocks snap together easily. When the back panel is slid into place, the cube locks rigidly, creating a building-block system.

You can create a wall of Yube Cubes to make a library, an accessory etagere or a room divider. Leave a single cube as a designer piece or stack them up to make a shelf. You can also leave them open in front, add in a drawer or stick on a door.

The doors come in various colors and patterns. The cubes can sit on the floor flat or you can add legs.

Make winter decor wonderful with blue

Getting the “blues” is generally considered a bad thing. But I have to admit: Any mention of the word “blue” makes me smile because blue is my favorite color.

Up until a few years ago, my heart belonged to green. And while green and I are still the best of friends, I am now head over heels in love with blue and celebrate this amazing color daily by using a liberal amount of blue in my decorating. If you would like to sing the blues with me this winter, here are some ideas for working this wonderful color into your decor.

I adore blue walls, because blue typically looks terrific with just about anything.

When I was developing my custom line of interior wall paint, I wanted to come up with a shade of blue that reminded me of

my mother-in-law, Mimi, who was also a big fan of blue. Mimi brought a bolt of light blue fabric with her from Ireland that she used to make all sorts of things for her home. Dan and I dubbed the shade “Mimi Blue,” and it is very similar to Front Porch, a wonderful light blue in my Mary Carol Artisan Paints line.

If you don’t want to paint a room blue, why not just a ceiling? When Dan and I renovated our historic fixer-upper, I painted the kitchen Garrity Cream, a warm, buttery off-white. But I couldn’t stand to not have some color in the space, so I covered the ceiling in Front Porch. Similarly, I painted the ceiling of my screened porch Amelia Blue, a punchy shade that’s also in my paint line. Having blue ceilings makes me feel I’m under sunny skies all year long.

If you are crafty, there is no end to what you can do with a can of blue paint.

But how can you choose just one, when you know that just a few yards of blue fabric, whether it’s a playful floral or a sophisticated damask, can do so much to elevate the design of a home?

You can’t go wrong with this timeless combination, which looks great in all seasons.

While only one room in my home is painted blue, you’ll find pops of blue throughout my entire house, thanks to a wide array of blue accents I like to mix in and around.

She placed both containers on top of her washer on a lovely silver tray. I’ve done something similar with my cats’ food — I store the cat chow on my kitchen counter in a pretty glass jar.

I’ve even taken this idea one step further by feeding these spoiled kitties in adorable blue-and-white china pet-food bowls corralled on a silver tray. The cats don’t care a fig about how their food is served, but it sure makes my kitchen look nicer to have their chow displayed in such a fun fashion.

In addition, if you like to keep functional things like boxes of tissues out where they are in view, make them more attractive by finding a nice tissue-box cover.

Instead of lining up unattractive bottles of cooking oil or vinegars, put them in a fun galvanized tin container or an English footbath so they look nicer. And take that pile of mail on your kitchen desk or table and stow it in a pretty bowl until you have time to deal with it.
