ANNUAL REPORT

MISSION Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s core purpose is to bring artists, art, and audiences together to enrich, engage, educate, and change lives through the experience of dance. Under the artistic leadership of Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street continues to innovate, supporting ascendant creative talent while presenting repertory by internationally recognized living artists. Hubbard Street has grown through the establishment of multiple platforms alongside the Lou Conte Dance Studio—now in its fifth decade of providing a wide range of public classes and pre-professional training— while extensive Youth, Education, and Community Programs keep the organization deeply connected to its hometown.

A message from Hubbard Street’s Leadership Over the past 40 years, Hubbard Street has evolved from an ensemble of four dancers performing in senior centers across Chicago to an institution with global reach, transforming lives through dance by way of performances, community programs, and education. Hubbard Street continues to push the boundaries of contemporary dance, bringing new and innovative ideas to the dance form every day. As a major cultural institution in Chicago and a national leader in the dance field, Hubbard Street is dedicated to creating programming that is influential and impactful to the Chicago community while giving all Chicagoans the chance to have an experience with Hubbard Street. This year Hubbard Street increased the depth and reach of our programming by offering free tickets for over 6,500 CPS students and their families to all of our Harris Theater performances through DreamTix. Hubbard Street furthered its mission to provide extensive and comprehensive training to the next generation of dancers with the launch of the Hubbard Street Professional Program (HS Pro). The program for 18–24 year old aspiring professional dancers began with two Pilot Programs in the Spring of 2017 before the launch of the full year-long program. The company’s repertoire—which features numerous masterworks by international contemporary choreographers—has continued to grow through commissions for new works and collaborations, as our artistic team strives to provide our dancers with the most inspiring, challenging, and creative home possible. Season 39 began with two world premieres by Alejandro Cerrudo and Brian Brooks, paired with two masterworks by Jiří Kylián. Similarly, the Spring Series brought together the works of master choreographer Nacho Duato, with the fresh ideas of Crystal Pite and Lucas Crandall. Over the course of almost 40 years, Hubbard Street has also sought to develop the careers of ascending choreographers. Danc(e)volve: New Works Festival at the Museum of Contemporary Art in May featured a program of new creations by four extraordinary Chicago-based women: Alice Klock, Julia Rhoads, Penny Saunders, and Robyn Mineko Williams. Season 39 ended with our exciting Summer Series taking audiences through each decade of Hubbard Street’s 40-year history from Founding Artistic Director Lou Conte’s The 40s and Georgia and Twyla Tharp’s The Golden Section to the company’s recent work by William Forsythe, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Crystal Pite. The annual Spotlight Ball following the Summer Series performance raised over $800,000 towards Hubbard Street’s education and community programming while celebrating the company’s four decade history. The evening was attended by a variety of former Hubbard Street dancers and all three of Hubbard Street’s Artistic Directors; Founding Artistic Director Lou Conte, Jim Vincent, and current Artistic Director, Glenn Edgerton. These are only a few of our highlights from Season 39, which also include our Youth, Education, and Community Programs, Pre-Professional Training Programs, and the Lou Conte Dance Studio, among the many other areas of accomplishment. This report outlines more of the people and places we were able to reach throughout the past year, thanks to the support of our donors and the passion of our artists, staff, board members, audience members and students.
