MISSION Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s core purpose is to bring artists, art and audiences together to enrich, engage, educate, and change lives through the experience of dance. Under the artistic leadership of Glenn Edgerton, Hubbard Street continues to innovate, supporting ascendant creative talent while presenting repertory by internationally recognized living artists. Hubbard Street has grown through the establishment of multiple platforms alongside the Lou Conte Dance Studio— now in its fifth decade of providing a wide range of public classes and preprofessional training—while extensive Youth, Education, and Community Programs keep the organization deeply connected to its hometown.

FROM HUBBARD STREET’S LEADERSHIP
As Hubbard Street celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2018, I celebrated a milestone as well: my first anniversary as Executive Director. Since I joined Hubbard Street, I’ve learned about the immense passion this organization exudes and how much brightness lies ahead of us for the future. As a major cultural institution in Chicago and a national leader in the dance field, Hubbard Street is dedicated to creating programming and training opportunities that encourage and inspire the next generation of dancers. Every day, I feel incredibly energized as I walk through the building and see hundreds of dance students passing through our doors of all ages and skill levels to continue their training with our renowned faculty. This annual report outlines the people and places we were able to reach throughout the past year, and the goals we continue to reach towards in the future. Last year, we continued to make dance accessible in the Chicago community through scholarships and financial aid offered for classes and Intensives at the Hubbard Street Dance Center, as well as for our Adaptive Dance Programs and School Residencies. At our home performances as part of the 40th Anniversary season, we were proud to celebrate four choreographers who embody where Hubbard Street has been and where we see ourselves in the future: Peter Chu, Crystal Pite, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Ohad Naharin. Additionally, Hubbard Street’s performances brought the joy of dance to 15 U.S. cities as well as San Sauveur, Canada and Mexico City, Mexico, sharing our world class talent with tens of thousands of dance enthusiasts beyond Chicago. Thank you to our many donors, board members, audience members, staff, and passionate artists who helped continue to support our mission to transform lives through dance this year.

FALL Hubbard Street Dance Chicago began its 40th Anniversary season with Space, In Perspective, a new and innovative performance curated by Peter Chu that led audiences through various spaces of the Harris Theater for Music and Dance including into the Loading Dock, backstage, through stairwells, and onto the stage itself.

WINTER Hubbard Street’s Winter Series focused on a choreographer whose work has become part of the fabric that makes Hubbard Street the company that it is today: Crystal Pite. SPRING The 40th Anniversary Season Spring Series was dedicated to Hubbard Street’s beloved Resident Choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo. The special two-night engagement at the Auditorium Theatre marked the company’s first engagement there in 20 years. The exciting return to the Auditorium featured Alejandro’s first work for the company Lickety-Split, Silent Ghost, originally choreographed for Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and the world premiere of Out of Your Mind.

SUMMER Hubbard Street closed the 40th Anniversary Season with Decadance/ Chicago, a world premiere by world renowned Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin created specifically for Hubbard Street. BOLD MOVES FOR BOLD WOMEN Bold Moves for Bold Women 2018 celebrated original Hubbard Street dancer Claire Bataille with a special evening at Baker McKenzie featuring a Q+A with Claire and Artistic Director Glenn Edgerton moderated by former Hubbard Street dancer and Director of the Chicago Dancemakers Forum Ginger Farley. The evening also included a silent auction and raised $65,000 to support Hubbard Street’s education programs.

HS Pro The Hubbard Street Professional Program (HS Pro) directed by Alexandra Wells, Artistic Director of Springboard Danse Montreal, launched with its inaugural class in Fall of 2017. The program’s mission is to address the needs of dancers striving to enter the current job market by providing diverse training alongside one of the prestigious contemporary dance companies in the world. The 20 dancers in the inaugural class performed during Space, In Perspective alongside the company dancers. In May, HS Pro held their own immersive performance at the Hubbard Street Dance Center titled “The Takeover” as a culmination of their work during the 2017-18 year.

Intensives Hubbard Street added one additional program to our pre-professional Intensive training initiatives, an Advanced level intensive for dancer 13-17, at the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at the University of Southern California alongside our pre-existing Pre-Professional Choreographic Intensive in Los Angeles.

LCDS At the Lou Conte Dance Studio, directed by founding Hubbard Street Dancer Claire Bataille, workshops and master classes allow access to expertise, while a broad variety of weekly classes offer training at all levels in jazz, ballet, dance fitness, modern, tap, African, hip-hop, yoga, PilatesÂŽ and more. LCDS serves nearly 5,000 students annually with over 70 classes per week.

Education Our extensive Youth, Education and Community Programs, directed by Kathryn Humphreys, are models in the field of arts education. Hubbard Street’s Education Programs combine the creative mission of our performing company with our unique expertise in education. We bring students and schools into the world of dance by actively engaging them in creation, performance, and reflection. Our Youth Dance Program continues this, adding rigorous technique study and performance opportunities to our unique choreography curriculum. Our suite of Adaptive Dance and community programs ensure that there is a place here for everyone to be a dancer. In all our programs, classrooms and studios become dynamic spaces of creative self-expression and empowered learning.

School Residencies Hubbard Street Dance Chicago offered residencies and workshops for students to explore contemporary dance and choreography, develop their creativity and problem-solving skills, deepen their analytic and abstract thinking, create connections to other areas of study, and learn about themselves and from one another, through our Movement As Partnership residency grants, SpringBoard residencies, and after-school programming.
3000 students and 250 teachers participated in our programs through residencies, performances, and professional development workshops this year.
Partnership with Ellen Mitchell Elementary School Mitchell School holds a special place at Hubbard Street. As the only year-long, multi-grade dance partnership in the city, Mitchell serves as a unique partnership model. Now in its tenth year, the program provides a sequential dance curriculum for all students in grades pre-k–5. The 5th graders participate in a special capstone project, working with the dancers of the company, as choreographers and performers.

Community Programs In addition to our in-school programming, Hubbard Street also offered youth dance classes and camps at the Hubbard Street Dance Center. We continued our in-studio Adaptive Dance Program for students on the Autism spectrum and students with Parkinson’s Disease. The Youth Dance Program is proud to offer an extensive scholarship and financial aid program, making dance accessible to students throughout the city, with no one who applies turned away.
Dance Education Institute Hubbard Street’s Dance Education Institute provided workshops to assist Chicago-area dance teachers in developing their dance education curricula, as well as extensive arts integration workshops for general classroom teachers interesting in integrating dance teaching methods into their classrooms.

Youth Dance Program More than 80 classes were offered through our Youth Dance Program for children ages 18 months-18 years in creative movement, ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and tap, along with audition based performing ensembles, master classes, summer intensives, and camps. Serving 1,000 students annually, the program provides $75,000 in scholarships and financial aid.

First Steps In the Fall of 2017, Hubbard Street introduced a new scholarship program for incoming 1st graders to provide tuition free ballet class to selected students. 15 students participated in the First Steps program.

Spotlight Ball Hubbard Street’s Season 40 Annual Spotlight Ball, held on June 6, 2018 and included an abbreviated Decadance/Chicago performance at The Harris Theater, raised over $800,000. Funds raised through the Spotlight Ball allow Hubbard Street to continue to bring the transformative power of dance to more people throughout the community. The Spotlight Ball Award was presented to Ohad Naharin for his contributions to the dance community as Artistic Director of Batsheva Dance Company.
