The Youth Dance Program of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago CREATIVE. TECHNICAL. COMPREHENSIVE. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is among the most original forces in contemporary dance. The Youth Dance Program provides a thorough dance education that focuses on creativity and the techniques that support contemporary dance.

CREATIVE.

Early Childhood & Primary Division classes allow students ages 18 months to 9 years to investigate universal dance concepts through improvisation. Young dancers use their imagination and engage in creative problem solving, not only to strengthen their physical development, but to encourage cognitive, social, and emotional growth. Dancers ages 9–18 continue their explorations in improvisation and choreography throughout the technique program.

TECHNICAL.

Progressive classes provide dancers ages 6 to 18 with detailed study of the techniques that support contemporary dance. With a classical ballet foundation, additional courses include modern, jazz, hip hop, tap, and musical theater, as well as master classes with current and former Hubbard Street dancers.

COMPREHENSIVE.

Through age-appropriate goals such as improvisation, dance vocabulary, and technique, students study all aspects of dance, including choreography. Our comprehensive approach helps dancers reach progressive skill levels, develops leadership and risk-taking, and inspires communication of their ideas in new ways.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DIVISION For ages 18 months to 5 years Hubbard Street’s Early Childhood Creative Movement curriculum allows young students to explore their developing movement skills while interacting with caregivers and peers, slowly moving into independent classes at age 3. Utilizing our renowned universal dance vocabulary, each session features a different theme, such as change, communication, balance, or confidence to contribute to the development of our littlest students as they start to understand themselves and the world around them. Creative Movement (CM) Parent/Child Class: ages 18 months to 3 years Caregivers are an essential part of this class, in which we bounce, swing, twirl, and jump accompanied by vibrant music and stories. Creative Movement (CM): ages 3 to 5 As children explore new and familiar dance concepts through their evolving gross motor skills, we’ll tell stories with movement while dancing together.

PRIMARY DIVISION For ages 5 to 9 Dancers in the primary program explore the “BEST” universal elements of dance (Body, Energy, Space, Time) in more complex ways, using partners, learning simple dance combinations and creating dances as they learn beginning choreography. Students work together as they choreograph in trios and quartets, gain a stronger sense of self as they explore who they are as dancers, and prepare their bodies and minds for technical study. Dancers begin formal technique study alongside their Creative Movement class, creating a balanced and developmentally appropriate dance education. Creative Movement (CM): ages 5 to 7 Students become skilled dancers and choreographers as they increase their range of motion, body articulation and locomotion, learn to put movements together, and solve simple movement problems. Intro to Ballet: ages 6 to 7 Dancers investigate ballet technique through etiquette, body awareness, and vocabulary in a welcoming environment. Level A technique classes: ages 7 to 9 Students with little or no formal dance training explore their choice of ballet, jazz, hip hop, tap, or musical theater.

The Young Choreographer’s Project is an advanced venture involving significant student independence in project design and execution. Working under the guidance of a selected faculty mentor, intermediate to advanced teen dancers will have eight (8) weeks to bring a dance piece from the initial concept to a fully realized 4-to 6-minute work. Choreographers must demonstrate considerable leadership skills, as they take responsibility for casting their piece, communicating with their mentor through in-person meetings and journal entries, selecting music and costumes, and meeting all deadlines. This valuable experience is designed for students interested in pursuing choreography at the collegiate or professional level. Cost: $300 per 8-week rehearsal period + costume fee. Contact youth@hubbardstreetdance.com to apply. Applications will be evaluated on a first-come, first-served basis.
