Ecosystem Restoration Worksheet
What makes up an ecosystem? Hello! We are here to tell you about birds, bugs and plants, and why they are so important for a healthy planet.
Did you know? There are over 500 species of birds in the UK. When birds travel, they take the plant seeds they have eaten with them and drop them to the ground which helps new plants grow in new places!
Did you know? Lots of plants need bugs called pollinators to make seeds. To make a seed, a flower needs to be pollinated. Pollinators, like bees and butterflies, carry a powder called pollen from one flower to another. Without pollinators, we would not be able to grow delicious foods like strawberries and cocoa beans. (Cocoa beans are the main ingredient in chocolate!)
Did you know? Plants are really important for the planet and for all living things. Living creatures eat them and live in them. Plants help to clean air and water. They also help to keep the Earth's temperature just right by storing away carbon.
So… What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is how living things work together with the world around them to build a healthy community. Ecosystems are different around the world. They can include everything from big animals like elephants to tiny bugs like ants. They can be cold like the Arctic or hot like a desert. Rainforests, lakes and mountains all have different creatures, plants, rocks and amounts of water. As humans, we need these healthy ecosystems so we can have a happy planet to live on.
