Despite significant progress on reducing waste across sectors over recent years, WRAP estimates that a vast quantity of surplus remains in the UK food system and that 35% of the UK’s GHG emissions comes from our food and drink.

Improve surplus food redistribution for retailers and communities
Food Connect is a professional food redistribution service developed and delivered by Hubbub, that uses zero-emissions vehicles. The service tackles the ‘final mile’* challenge by delivering good quality surplus food for community groups to share. Following a pilot in Milton Keynes, the model launched in London in 2022 and now operates from four community sites.
*Final mile is the last step of a product’s journey

Milton Keynes welcomed Water Eaton Church, St Mary’s Community Centre and Tinkers Bridge Residents’ Association to their distribution network.
Spring 2023
Sustainable Merton launched a new bike service helping their established network of food hubs and community fridges.
Community groups face increased demands for their services and pressure to respond to the changing needs of their neighbourhoods. In the last 12 months we have seen an increase in visitor numbers. Food Connect enables community teams to focus their time and resources to help visitors access services and create new opportunities for their community.
During the coldest winter months, volunteers organised a warm room for residents offering a hot meal and social interaction with their neighbours. The project proved so popular it has become a community meal for up to 50 people every week.
Tinkers Bridge Residents’ Association took part in Hubbub’s Eat Your Pumpkin campaign by hosting a children’s disco, pumpkin tasting and providing recipe cards to inspire their neighbourhood. Their team have organised community events for Easter and the King’s Coronation and have an ongoing mission to save plants from supermarkets to brighten up their neighbourhood. Residents identified an increase in abandoned pets in their area. Food Connect secured new sources of pet food for volunteers to share with those that need it.

The Oasis Community Fridge has recently partnered with St. George’s Cathedral Southwark. The relocation of their weekly fridge sessions has enabled them to provide a regular breakfast club in a relaxing café atmosphere all year round while waiting for the community fridge to open. Huge catering portions are prepacked in family and single portions so that visitors can enjoy healthy cooked food at home. Oasis Community Fridge launched ‘The Refill’ a subsidiary project to enable visitors to access and refill environmentally friendly personal and household products. Downtime on the team’s bike and trailer has been vital in aiding movement between venues and supporting their new projects.

Supported by Starbucks, we are exploring the expansion of Food Connect to other locations.
