I’m proud to be bringing my medical training and military experiences here to Hattiesburg.” Having grown up in Louisiana and graduated from Louisiana Tech University, Dr. Chris Benjamin can’t wait to get back to the South. He completed his medical degree a the Medical College of Ohio, his residency at Georgetown University Medical Center, a cardiac transplantation research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, a cardiac surgery fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in complex valve/cardiopulmonary transplant from the Cleveland Clinic. “Wesley is a great place to bring our vision of what modernday cardiac surgery is all about,” said Benjamin. esley Medical Center is at the top of its class for employee experiences. The hospital has recently been recognized with an Excellence through Insight award for Overall Employee Satisfaction & Engagement in the Large Hospital Category as ranked by HealthStream Research. The nearly 1,300 employees of Wesley Medical Center employee satisfaction scores exceeded their parent company’s averages as well as national averages in all categories. The employee satisfaction survey, administered in May of 2010 by Healthstream Research, asked 23 questions, which evaluated several key areas related to employees work environment, pay and benefits, supervision, hiring and promotion practices, leadership and quality. Survey results showed that Wesley Medical Center employees were more satisfied than the national norm. Based on a four-point scale with four being the most favorable score and one being the least, Wesley rated 3.47 in overall employee satisfaction, well above the the 3.11 national average. “We were so pleased with this year’s survey results,” said Wesley Medical Center HR director Terry Trigg. “Our employees’ job satisfaction is key to the success of our hospital. If we have employees who like what they do, enjoy coming to work and are proud of the organization for which they work, that pays off in a positive way for the patients they serve.”

From ear infections to allergies to moms who deserve a little Botox... ar, Nose and Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery (ENT-FPS) was founded in 1979 by Dr. Larry Day. At the time, the words “Facial Plastic Surgery” were included in the name because many patients did not realize that, as specialists in head and neck surgery, facial plastic surgery is part of that specialty training and practice. As the business flourished, Dr. Bob Coltharp joined the practice in 1982. Dr. Chuck Guice and Dr. Bob McCrary relocated their practices and respectively joined in 1990 and 1996. Dr. Curt Childress joined in 2004 shortly before Dr. Day retired. The business is conveniently located off the west entrance to Wesley Medical Center. While communication of treatment with primary healthcare providers is always best, most people don’t realize that doctor and nurse practitioner referrals are usually not required for appointments. Also, many people are not aware that in addition to the usual ear, nose ,and throat services provided, the office also offers allergy testing, hearing testing and hearing aids. Since many ear, nose, throat, and sinus problems may include allergy causes, allergy testing and treatment for all ages

Their two audiologists both have doctorate degrees and are trained in providing inner ear and balance testing. In 1996, the doctors opened one of the first certified outpatient specialty surgery centers in Mississippi. Wesley has been ranked number one among hospitals in Mississippi in Quality Measures by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov. “I am so proud of our medical staff and employees who work continuously to be the best of the best in serving our patients,” said Andrea Brenn, Wesley’s Chief Nursing Officer. “This number one ranking in our state demonstrates the commitment to quality by our entire team at Wesley.” The Hospital Compare data contains hospital-specific performance on 25 quality measures for more than 4,200 hospitals nationwide. The quality measures show how often hospitals give recommended treatments that are known to get the best results for patients. Not only was Wesley Medical Center ranked first in Mississippi, the but hospital also ranks in the 93rd percentile nationally, which means that in quality measures, Wesley ranks better than all other hospitals in the nation below the 93 percent level. The Quality Measures used to compute the rankings are drawn from four clinical topic areas, which include: heart attack; heart failure; pneumonia and surgical prevention. Information about these treatments is taken from the patients’ record. “Quality is something we work on improving every day. G.O.T.C.H.A! University of Southern Mississippi project focuses on curbing incidences of heart disease and stroke any people identify the Mississippi Delta as the birthplace of the blues, but the region also owns a more dubious distinction as one of the country’s primary hotbeds for cardiovascular disease. Experts with The Center for Sustainable Health Outreach (CSHO) at The University of Southern Mississippi are striving to alter that reality with a community-based project aimed to curb the incidence of heart disease and strokes. Since July 2008, the Getting on Target with Community Health Advisors Project (GOTCHA) has been instrumental in providing materials, information and professional guidance aimed at raising awareness and improving the health of Delta residents. “We are currently working with 40 community health advisors in the Mississippi Delta,” said Dr. Susan Mayfield-Johnson, Director of the Center for Sustainable Health Outreach. “We still have a few counties to go, but we have completed the trainings for Bolivar, Humphreys, Sunflower and Washington counties.” Mayfield-Johnson, who serves as GOTCHA’s principal investigator, explains that community health advisors represent individuals who are indigenous to their communities and who act as links between community members and the service delivery system. “As community members, these workers are able to integrate health information about prevention of disease and the health system into the community’s culture, language and value systems,” she said. “Therefore, they reduce cultural, linguistic, social and financial barriers to health care.” In preparing the groundwork for the GOTCHA project, informal discussions were held with two diverse groups in the Delta – health care professionals from Sunflower County and community members from Coahoma County. During those meetings, participants identified cardiovascular disease, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and

obesity as priority health concerns. Group participants specifically noted the lack of basic knowledge concerning risk factors, prevention methods, lifestyle and behavioral modification and the lack of access to health care in the community. “They expressed concern that there was not enough attention being paid to the prevention of these chronic conditions and that the history and culture of the Mississippi Delta contributed to many of the negative health behaviors,” said Mayfield-Johnson. Statistics show that cardiovascular disease, principally heart disease and stroke, ranks as the leading cause of death in Mississippi. African Americans and persons with lower socioeconomic status, lower education levels and limited access to care are at particular risk for cardiovascular disease. The Mississippi Delta represents one of the poorest and more disadvantaged areas of the United States.

Mayfield-Johnson notes that although the project’s emphasis has been placed on the prevention and early detection of strokes in African American men and women, attention has also been focused on the contributing risk factors of several chronic diseases, specifically diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease and lifestyle modification and management principles of improved nutrition, stress management and increased physical activity. Dr. Lachel Story, assistant professor in the School of Nursing at Southern Miss, serves as the contact nurse and an investigator for the GOTCHA project. Story helps train community health advisors regarding diabetes and hypertension education as well as training them to take blood pressures and blood glucose measures in the community. “After sufficient training, these community members can go out and conduct these screenings in their communities and provide education accordingly,” said Story. “The project gives each trainee a kit upon completion of training to conduct these services in their communities.” Funding for the GOTCHA project is provided by the Delta Health Alliance, a non-profit organization through the Rural Health Policy, Health Resources and Services Administration. Mayfield-Johnson has been working in the field of community health for the past 10 years where her emphasis has been with underserved communities and community health workers. Through community-based initiatives like GOTCHA, she and other health care professionals are determined to transform lives in the Mississippi Delta. “We have a saying at CHSO: ‘If the problem is in the community, the solutions are in the community,’ ” said Mayfield-Johnson. “Community health advisors are solutions in many communities. They are intimately linked to their communities because they are members of their communities. Their loyalty is to their communities. “By truly partnering with community health advisors to change the culture around cardiovascular disease, we can make a difference.”

“A Doctor’s Confession to the City of Hattiesburg...” And why, despite all, I still do what I do... Dear friend, “Confessions are tough. Real tough. But, sometimes a confession can set the record straight, and I want to give credit where credit is due. Before I talk about my confession though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say “Oh yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Spiers. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and those cute little children and beautiful wife.” I do feel pretty blessed to have my family. Well, perhaps I should tell you a little more about that photo, and why I use it in my ads. Let’s start with me, the tall guy to your left.
Lately we rode ten miles together on bicycles, with no problem. That seems like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference to them. The other little girls, Laura (12), Leah (10), and Katie (8) get adjusted when they are not feeling well or sometimes just to stay “tuned up.” My children rarely get sick with ear infections or colds. My wife, Kelly, also gets regular chiropractic care which helps her asthma and to exercise optimally.

Years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story. “Back then I was a busboy at a pizza restaurant. I was lifting some heavy garbage and felt an instant pain in my lower back. The pain at times was so breathtaking that I couldn’t move. I developed a lean to my left and couldn’t stand straight. I couldn’t even put my shoes on. I was afraid that I’d lose my job if the disability continued. After taking several pain pills which didn’t help, I thought I might have to have surgery to fix it. I thought there has to be an easier way and decided against it. But, there’s more… My grandmother convinces me to give her doctor a try. This new doctor does an exam, takes some films, and then “adjusts” my spine. The adjustment doesn’t hurt, it actually feels good. I get relief, and I can stand straight and move again. And that’s how it happened!” Now for Ashley (17), who is the oldest of my four girls in the photo and Nathan (14), my only boy, they developed asthma when they were very young. They both have been admitted to the hospital with it. They’ve even been limited in their activities because of the attacks. Upon finishing school, I started to adjust them regularly and the attacks started to subside. Now their asthma is only occasional.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their back pain. Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, neck pain, shoulder/ arm pain, carpal tunnel, whiplash from car accidents, sciatica, fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies, sinuses, numbness in limbs, and athletic injuries, just to name a few. Several times a day, patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that!
