Hattiesburg G.I.

H

attiesburg GI Associates (HGIA) has been providing patients in the pine belt area with quality digestive care since 1991 when Dr. Creed Fox arrived from Memphis. He was joined one year later by Dr. Troy Morrissette and Dr. Stephen Buckley arrived in 1997. Cindy Townsend served as the group’s board certified gastrointestinal nurse until she completed her training and board certification as a nurse practitioner in 2004. Finally Dr. William Farmer joined the group in 2008 after completing his training in Mobile. With a clinic on the campus of Wesley Medical Center the group is focused on serving patients in this area with the most comprehensive gastrointestinal care available. Digestive health affects everyone’s life, therefore; HGIA does not limit access to patients by requiring a referral for an appointment. Anyone can call for an appointment and quickly be seen by one of their providers. As the only GI group in the Hattiesburg area that does not require a referral, it allows patients to have control over who provides their healthcare. The physicians at Hattiesburg GI Associates excel in the treatment of gallbladder and pancreatic disease, ulcers, anemia, constipation, diarrhea, celiac disease, unexplained abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, gastrointestinal cancers, and diseases of the liver. With the state of the art Digestive Diseases Center (DDC) on the same campus as their primary clinic, they are able to offer quick and convenient service to patients. One of the newest medical treatments that only HGIA offers is painless, definitive hemorrhoid treatment. Though few people like to talk about them, hemorrhoids are extremely common. Common symptoms of hemorrhoids include rectal pain, itching, burning, and most commonly rectal bleeding. By age 50, about half of the US population will have experienced this potentially painful condition. Common causes of hemorrhoids include constipation, pregnancy, childbirth, obesity, heavy lifting, sitting for long periods, and diarrhea. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases the prevalence of hemorrhoids in the United States is 10.4 million people, with approximately 1 million new cases diagnosed every year. Yet only 3.5 million of the 10.4 million people with the condition seek medical treatment, making it dramatically under-treated. Despite the number of patients who suffer in silence, millions of hemorrhoid banding procedures are performed each year, making it the most common procedure performed worldwide for hemorrhoid treatment.

HGIA – What You Need to Know: n No Referral Necessary n Open Access Colon Cancer Screening n Painless Hemorrhoid Ablation n Appointments Commonly Available Within 1 Week n Conveniently Located on the Campus of Wesley Medical Center n Call Today 601.268.5185 The physicians at Hattiesburg GI Associates understand that patients want the quickest, safest and most painless treatment for hemorrhoids. That is why HGIA is proud to be the only GI group in south Mississippi that offers treatment for hemorrhoids with an easy, well established banding procedure. Their office based treatment requires no lost work time, no prep and no post procedure pain medications are routinely needed. Also, it eliminates the need for continued application of creams or ointments to try and relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Most patients are out of the office in less than 20 minutes and can return to their normal everyday activities. This procedure is covered by all insurance carriers and has given HGIA the opportunity to treat a condition that plagues many patients. Another common condition that affects men and women of all ages is heartburn. However,

Page 11

From heartburn to hemorrhoids, Hattiesburg G.I. Associates is more than just colon cancer screening most people do not realize that chronic reflux can be a precursor to esophageal cancer. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most commonly treated conditions in medicine today and a large number of patients take over the counter medications for relief. With this convenient treatment approach, the typical symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation may be controlled; while more underappreciated symptoms can be overlooked, thus increasing the risk of long term complications. At HGIA a comprehensive history and exam can be performed to asses a patients risk for esophageal cancer or other long term complications of GERD. As most people know the most important service a gastroenterologist can provide is colorectal cancer screening. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States, however most colon cancers can be prevented by proper screening. The recommended guidelines for colorectal cancer screening are anyone age 50 or older regardless of family history. If you are at high risk for example, if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, a family history of colorectal polyps, or a personal history of Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis then a screening exam before the age of 50 may be appropriate. This can always be discussed with one of their physicians during an office visit. One of the services offered by Hattiesburg GI Associates that is unique to their practice is open access colonoscopy. This process was initiated to try and increase access to colorectal cancer screening. This allows patients to bypass the routine office visit to arrange a screening exam that other gastroenterology clinics require. This process can be initiated with a referral from another healthcare provider or by a simple call to the office requesting a screening evaluation. The patient is then assessed over the phone by one of our qualified endoscopy nurses and scheduled for a colonoscopy. If the patient is found to be on high risk medications such as Plavix or Coumadin or has a high risk medical condition, then an appointment can be made to discuss these risks prior to the procedure. Hattiesburg GI Associates aims to serve all of your digestive needs. All of their physicians and their nurse practitioner are board certified in gastroenterology. With options unique to their practice, such as quick and easy appointments without a referral, painless hemorrhoid ablation and open access colon cancer screening, Hattiesburg GI Associates is the best option for your digestive health care. Whether you have heartburn, hemorrhoids or anything in between their goal is to improve your digestive health. Visit their website at HGIA.net or call today for an appointment – 601.268.5185.

Wesley Medical Center Commited to ‘Compassionate, Christian, Quality Care’

W

esley Medical Center’s commitment to quality health care has deep roots extending back to 1900. This community hospital with 211 beds has their vision set on the future of healthcare. Wesley Medical Center is repeatedly recognized for their commitment to excellence in categories ranging from patient safety to cardiac care. Recognized for Quality Care In continuing with their mission of providing quality care for their patients, Wesley was named the number one hospital in Mississippi to receive Cardiac Care, Gastrointestinal Care and Orthopedic Surgery by CareChex, a national rating system of the Delta Group. Wesley was also one of the nation’s “Top Performers” on key quality measures by The Joint Commission, which is the leading accreditor of healthcare organizations in America. Wesley Medical Center became the first and only Accredited Chest Pain Center in the Pine Belt. Building on its commitment to providing superior cardiac care, Wesley received accreditation by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) - a designation held by only 12% of hospitals in the United States. Chest Pain

No one in the Pine Belt has as much experience with daVinci robotics-assisted surgery as the physicians at Wesley Medical Center.

Center accreditation comes after a rigorous evaluation from the SCPC designed to determine Wesley’s ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. “Working hard and being rewarded with this accreditation, immediately on the heels of being

recognized as a top performer by The Joint Commission, is a testament to the hard work of the Wesley team,” said Mike Neuendorf, Wesley Medical Center, CEO. “Being named this area’s only certified chest pain center and only the sixth facility to be recognized in the state, shows once again that we have the serv-

Page 14

ice, the process, the quality and the expertise to get the job done, and get it done right.” daVinci Robotic Surgery Wesley Medical Center brought daVinci robotic assisted surgery to the Pine Belt in 2007, and in 2011 invested in the newest daVinci SI Surgical System, enabling physicians to take the minimally invasive approach with even more complex surgical procedures, including gynecologic, urologic and general surgeries. The daVinci integrates robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon’s eyes and hands. Using the system, the surgeon operates while seated at a console viewing a 3-D image of the surgical area. The system mimics the surgeon’s hand movements in real time, on a smaller scale, within the operating site in the patient’s body. For most patients this results in less pain, faster recovery, and less scarring. With the addition of this technology, Wesley’s minimally invasive surgical program is one of the fastest growing in Mississippi. Emergency Services The 45-Minutes-or-Less ER Service Pledge launched in 2012. The goal of the pledge is that a physician or nurse practitioner will work diligently to have our patients initially seen within 45 minutes of their noted arrival in the emergency room. This is one more way Wesley Medical Center focuses on what is important to their patients.

Medical Guide 2012-2013

“In many emergency rooms across the country, wait times have been increasing,” says Neuendorf. “We want to assure our patients that we are dedicated to not only offering the highest quality care but also to providing that care as efficiently as possible. Our process improvements have been focused on getting patients into a room as quickly as possible and enabling our physician to begin their diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner.” Wesley’s Birth Center Just as new babies are welcomed into the world at Wesley’s Birth Center, the Birth Center itself welcomes renovations in 2012. Wesley has already begun these renovations, with plans to add a well-baby nursery. Paired with the existing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and 15 Labor and Delivery suites, the nursery will offer new parents additional choices regarding care once their baby has been delivered. Each spacious suite is designed so parents can remain in one room for labor, delivery and immediate recovery. Diabetes Center The Diabetes Center at Wesley Medical Center, which was recently named as an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, will be expanding their educational programs in the community. “For people diagnosed with diabetes, one of the greatest challenges is learning how to manage their disease,” says Hannah

Hattiesburg Publishing, Inc.

Thompson, Diabetes Center Coordinator. Through the Diabetes Center, people with or at risk for diabetes will gain knowledge and skills needed to modify their current behavior and successfully self-manage their disease and its related conditions. Dr. Lara Otaigbe, who is a Certified Diabetes Educator is partnering with the Diabetes Center to provide participants with practical diabetes management options. She says, “When armed with the right tools, diabetes is very manageable for most patients. We can give patients the knowledge they need to stay in control.” Wesley Medical Group Wesley Medical Group offers families a convenient network of family practice clinics in locations across the Pine Belt. The newest clinic is Wesley Medical Group’s Oak Grove location. As the first tenant in the newly constructed Wesley Medical Park, a 22,000 square foot outpatient medical facility, Wesley Medical Group is positioned to make quality care more convenient to the residents in West Hattiesburg. Wesley Medical Group locations can also be found in Hattiesburg, Leakesville, Petal, Purvis, Sumrall and Tylertown. Patient care, quality and safety initiatives will always remain the number one priority for Wesley Medical Center. Hattiesburg Oral Surgery

D

r. Bennett York, Dr. Steve Cockerham and Dr. Brantley Nichols of Hattiesburg Oral Surgery are the surgical specialist of the dental profession. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, their extensive training, surgical expertise and unparalleled understanding of esthetics and function uniquely qualify them to treat the conditions, defects, injuries and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. Patients who complain of pain or problems in this area are routinely referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for help. However, a doctor referral is not necessary for an appointment with Hattiesburg Oral Surgery. While Drs. York, Cockerham and Nichols specialize in dental implants, wisdom tooth removal (impacted & erupted), corrective jaw surgery, oral pathology, facial trauma, TMJ disorders, removal of cyst & tumors, reconstruction for dentures and the use of IV sedation, you are probably most familiar with the term “wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to develop and appear in your mouth. They come in between the ages of 13 and 25, a time of life that has been called the "Age of TOP PHOTO: The doctors are: L-R Steve Cockerham, DDS Bennett V. York, DDS, Brantley P. Medical Guide 2012-2013

Wisdom." When a tooth is unable to fully enter the mouth, it is said to be "impacted." In general, impacted teeth are unable to break through the gums because there’s not enough room. Nine out of ten people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth. If left in the mouth, impacted wisdom teeth may damage neighboring teeth, or become infected. Because the third molar area of the mouth is difficult to clean, it is a site that invites the bacteria that leads to gum disease. Furthermore oral bacteria may travel from your mouth through the bloodstream, where it may lead to possible systemic infections and illnesses that affect the heart, kidneys and other organs. Research has shown that once periodontal disease is established in the third molar areas, the problem is persistent and progressive, but may improve following extraction of the teeth. In some cases a fluid-filled cyst or tumor may form around the base of the untreated wisdom tooth. As the cyst grows it may lead to more serious problems as it hollows out the jaw and damages surrounding nerves, teeth and other structures. Many people believe that as long as they are not in pain, they don’t have to worry about their wisdom teeth. However, pain free does not mean disease or problem free. In fact, wisdom teeth that come in normally may still be prone to disease, according to a study by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. AAOMS strongly recommends that third molars be evaluated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon by the time a patient is a young adult in order to assess the presence of third molars, disease status, and to suggest management options ranging from removal to a monitored retention plan to ensure optimal patient-specific outcomes. In general, dental and medical professionals agree that wisdom teeth should be removed in the following instances: n pain n infections and/or periodontal disease n cavities that cannot be restored n pathologies such as cysts, and tumors n damage to neighboring teeth n crowding of teeth Wisdom teeth are easier to remove when the patient is younger, since their roots are not completely formed, the surrounding bone is softer, and there is less chance of damaging nearby nerves or other structures. Removal of wisdom teeth at a later age becomes more complicated as the roots have fully developed (may involve the nerve), and the jawbone is denser. Drs. York & Cockerham are both board certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Nichols has successfully completed his written board certification and is currently scheduled to take his oral certifying exam. Their highly trained clinical staff consists of four RN’s, three LPN’s and 11 surgical assistants. All doctors and RN’s are ACLS Certified and all clinical staff is CPR Certified. As you can see, Hattiesburg Oral Surgery has the highest level of trained and educated employees possible. For more information or an appointment with Drs. Dr. Burns expressed their feelings about their chosen life’s work, “Providing the best patient care requires spending time with each patient – as much time as it takes to identify the problem, discuss treatment options, and formulate the best treatment plan for the individual. “ Located in Wesley Towers, Dr. Burns and Dr. Baylis opened Premier Orthopedics & Sports Medicine with the idea of providing more personalized care as a smaller clinic. They were impressed with Wesley Medical Center’s outstanding medical reputation in the area and wanted to become part of that effort. The two doctors met several years before opening their clinic after completing the requisite education and training for orthopedic surgeons. Each had also pursued additional fellowship training: Dr. Burns in joint replacement surgery and Dr. Baylis in arthroscopy and sports medicine under renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who has performed successful surgeries on many top professional athletes. Dr. Burns and Dr. Baylis both believe every patient, no matter his/her status, deserves the same treatment as any athlete. These two specialized areas of orthopedics obviously complement one another, offering these dedicated young doctors a chance to join forces and invest themselves in quality care for the Hattiesburg and Pine Belt community. It was a gutsy move for two basically conservative guys, but has proven to be a successful choice. Neither men believe in the label “minor surgery.” If a patient is having surgery for whatever reason, it is important. Both doctors believe in exhausting all other options before resorting to surgery. Those options include the proper use of medications, physical therapy, and other nonsurgical treatments. When these options have been eliminated and the need for surgery is evident, the doctors discuss the patient’s individual situation, educating him/her as much as possible on the benefits and risks involved plus the actual procedure and rehabilitation process after the surgery. Both doctors believe in taking as much time as necessary with surgical procedures in order to do it right the first time. No patient wants to have a “do-over” when it comes to surgery. Lastly, they pose two questions: “Will you be better off after the surgery?” and “Are you aware of and willing to take the risks involved?” Knowing what to expect before and after surgery, the patient can then make an informed

choice. Each doctor has a special passion for his field. Dr. Baylis is a big advocate of sports safety, stating “It is crucial that the parents, coaches, and athletes understand the value of sports safety. This includes appropriate conditioning and training, appropriate equipment, and most importantly for young athletes, supervision. This may also include interval training and breaks from certain sports that are now being played year round. Time is often needed for proper rehabilitation and healing before returning to a sport.” He adds, “One of the biggest problems we now see is overuse injuries in young athletes. It is so important that family members, coaches, and organizations understand the consequences of overuse of an athlete and the importance of rest.” For Dr. Burns, the HANA Table used in performing anterior approach hip replacements has been a true blessing, greatly benefitting the patient. He performed his first hip replacement using the HANA Table in January of 2009 at Wesley Medical Center, the only hospital in the area to have this advanced piece of equipment. While using this method might take a little longer than a standard hip replacement surgery, this only goes to reinforce Dr. Burns’ philosophy

of being more concerned with the patient’s care than with speed. The HANA Table allows the surgeon to manipulate the patient’s legs to allow for the movement of muscles instead of cutting them and detaching the muscles around the hip joint. This results in less recovery time and a smaller incision. The patient is up and moving around in a shorter amount of time, able to move on with the business of living. Residents of the Pine Belt are fortunate to have Dr. Jeffrey Burns and Dr. Tommy Baylis and Premier Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Clinic associated with Wesley Medical Center. With their dedication and concern for high quality patient care, the time they spend with patients insures that each person is knowledgeable about his/her conditions and comfortable with every decision made concerning their health care. The combined orthopedic expertise and experience of these two doctors creates an ideal setting for patients to make informed health choices with confidence. Dr. Burns and Dr. Baylis have successfully treated a wide variety of patients in the past, and they plan to continue to offer the same level of quality care in the future.

Petal Drug

P

etal Drug, founded in 1928, is the oldest continuously-run business in the City of Petal. Originally part of the service station on the corner of Central Avenue and Main Street, the B.T. Clearman family started the pharmacy before Petal was incorporated. They had only one doctor back then and they hand rolled each pill. On November 1, 1972, the ownership of Petal Drug changed from Mr. and Mrs. Clearman to Randy Spears. He moved the business to its current location, 201 Old Richton Road, in 1977. Through the years, the store has offered many services beyond that of a retail pharmacy including photo processing, full lines of personal care items, durable medical equipment, package shipping, full lines of gifts, cards and balloons as well as various specialty product lines, just to name a few. Petal Drug was remodeled in 2000 to place the focus more directly on patient care while retaining such conveniences as greeting cards, balloons and other specialty products. Since remodeling, public fax and copier services and a small jewelry line have been added to the existing services. In August 2005, the Petal community suffered one of the worst disasters in its history at the hands of Hurricane Katrina. In the following weeks, Petal Drug also suffered the tragic loss of its devoted owner/pharmacist. In the aftermath of the loss, his long time staff with the addition of his middle daughter, Katye Spears Parker, have allowed Petal Drug to continue the mission of its owner. “We try to give personal service and take people in as friends as well as customers.” For the past seven years, Parker along with Shannon Casada (28-year Store Manager) and Ginger Perry (12-year Pharmacist) have conducted business much the same way their predecessors did. Petal and its retail trade area have grown tremendously in the 85 years Petal Drug Company has been in business. The pharmacy, like many other locally owned and operated businesses, have had to change with the times and technology. Petal Drug has gone from hand rolled medications in a service station to a modern stand-alone building with computerized records and dispensing methods. Although technology and an ever-changing healthcare system have brought about many operational changes, the drug store’s commitment has not waivered. Its priority is and always will be the health, happiness and satisfaction of their customers and community.

Emeritus Senior Living Respite, vacation stays offer valuable option for caregivers

C

aregiving is a demanding role, and it is easy to neglect your own health and well-being when you are deeply involved with addressing your loved one’s needs. To relieve stress and prevent burnout, caregivers, whether full-time or only part-time, need periodic breaks to recharge and enjoy their own lives. Although circumstances may make taking time off difficult, there are a number of ways to provide you with a much needed break. At Emeritus of Forrest Park and Pine Meadows in Hattiesburg, “we’ve found that one of the best ways for a caregiver to obtain a needed rest is to arrange a short-term stay for his or her loved one in a safe, caring and nurturing environment.” Said Wanda Everett, of Emeritus Senior Living. “Emeritus as well as a number of senior living communities offer short-term stays. These brief stays, also called “respite” or “vacation stays,” are also available to help seniors recently discharged from the hospital who temporarily need a little extra help before heading home,” Suggests Miss Everett. Vacation stays provide individual attention and support, the comforts of home and the company of other residents in the community. Short-stay guests are usually treated to private apartments, meals and snacks prepared by the resident chef, and the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of recreational, social and cultural activities. In addition, guests receive whatever assistance they require for daily functioning from a professionally trained staff. Though many assisted living communities offer the amenities and comfort of home, as well as a caring and professionally trained staff, not all are equal. When evaluating a respite care program, you should ensure that you’re getting the quality care your loved one deserves. The staff at Emeritus of Forrest Park and Pine Meadows are happy to answer all questions about short term or permanent stays in their communities. Just call (888) 776-6811 or (888) 348-4453 and one of their experts will be ready to assist you and your family. At these communities both Alzheimer’s and Assisted Living Care Options are available. Here are some questions you can ask: n Are families limited to a certain number of hours for services needed? n Can I meet and interview the people who will be providing the respite care? n Does the program provide transportation? n Does the program keep an active file on medical conditions and other needs? Is there a written care plan? n How are the caregivers trained? Do they receive extra training, where appropriate, to meet specific family needs? n How far ahead of time do I need to call to arrange services? Costs for respite care, as well as the services provided, vary widely. Long-term care insurance policies often cover some of the cost of these stays, and federal and/or state programs may also help pay for respite care.
