Resolution:

Even though it’s already September, it’s never too late to make good on all those New Year promises

By Dr. Richard Pecunia, M.D., F.A.C.S.

an you believe it is September already? The year is flying by so quickly. It’s possible that many of you have long forgotten your list of New Year’s resolutions that you were determined to accomplish this year: • Quit smoking by June – it’s so hard, but I am still working on it. • Skip the sweets – I gave it a good effort. • Save more money – but there are so many sales! • Remove tattoo – there is still time. • Get stronger, thicker, longer lashes – definitely still on the list. • Have permanent plump lips – is that possible? If so, yes! As we zip through 2010 and into 2011, breakthroughs in plastic surgery have continued to occur thanks to advancements in science and technology. Some of the top breakthroughs have been popularized within the past several months and it’s looking like they will continue to be popular for 2010 and beyond. Effective and affordable tattoo removal, eyelash enhancement with a product known as Latisse and permanent lip augmentation that is safe and reversible. The tattoo removal is something that has worked out wonderfully for my patients this year. The procedure is essentially a controlled burn that is created on the surface of the tattoo in order to break up the ink on the

skin. Patients undergo a series of these treatments. Through the natural wound healing process the ink dissipates, leaving the patient with little evidence of a former tattoo. The results have been phenomenal. The best part is that unlike lasers, this new removal process can remove any colored tattoo and is very affordable. I’m sure you’ve heard of Latisse. With Brooke Shields as the celebrity endorser, it’s hard to ignore. Latisse is a FDA approved prescription treatment that increases eyelash growth, making lashes longer, thicker and darker – all in the comfort of your home. Latisse applied to the upper lashes once nightly will yield results within the first four weeks, with the most dramatic increase in lash thickness and growth occurring after 16 weeks of application. Almost everyone is a candidate. One of the newest procedures being performed is the FDA approved, per-

manent lip augmentation called the Perma Facial Implant. The natural looking implant is made of a soft, solid silicone elastomer that cannot rupture or deflate. The best part of this simple, 30 minute procedure is that most patients are able to resume normal activity within the next 2-3 days. Maybe you’ve seen your best friend or mother-in-law, and noticed her long lashes, her plump lips or even her back – something you’ve never seen her show off before – in a backless top, and thought, “wow, she looks great,” or question what she is doing to look like that. Know that she may have been to see a plastic surgeon to knock a few things off her list of New Year’s resolutions. It’s not too late for you to do the same. Hope you enjoy the rest of 2010. Mike Pruitt, Education Account Manager with Mississippi Power Company, still recalls the day in January 1970 when as a young boy he was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Pruitt’s diagnosis meant that his body was not producing the insulin it needed to function. As a result, he would have to spend the rest of his life giving himself daily insulin injections in order to stay alive. The daily routine for a person with diabetes often consists of checking blood sugar levels in the blood throughout the day to monitor whether sugar levels are high, low, or normal. Today, most people monitor their blood sugar levels by using a digital glucose monitor that is able to instantly and accurately give the patient a reading through the use of a small drop of blood and a disposable test strip. However, in 1970, such technology was not available. Explains Pruitt, “The only means to detect sugar levels was to wait until the sugar showed up in the urine. I had to add ten drops of water to five drops of urine, drop a fizzy tablet in and then check the color against a test strip. The color told me if I was negative or positive. As a kid it didn’t take me long to figure out that if I added more water I would always get a normal reading.” Even though Type 1 has played a regular role in Pruitt’s life for many years, it still did not prepare him for the day when he and his wife received the news that their daughter, Lucy, also had Type 1. Pruitt’s wife, Cara, remembers the symptoms Lucy, then three-years old, displayed. “Lucy would get very cranky and always wanted something to eat right away,” she said. “After many episodes we decided to have her blood sugar checked. The tests

revealed that her pancreas was shutting down and she would have to begin insulin within the next year.” “When I first learned of the diag-

The couple will serve as corporate chairs. Proceeds from the event benefit Camp Kandu. “The Walk is fun,” said Pruitt. “There’s a great turn out and you are sure to run into people you know. The best part is that you have an opportunity to make a difference through your participation, contribution, and helping to spread the awareness. Together we can beat this disease!” Registration for the Mississippi Walk for Diabetes - Hattiesburg will begin at 1 p.m. The walk, which is a one-mile “family fun” walk or a 3.1/5k, will also feature refreshments, music and activities for the entire family. The DFM is the state’s only nonprofit health organization that provides diabetes information, patient services, advocacy, and research to the 346,500 Mississippians with diabetes. Every dollar raised by the DFM stays in the state to support these efforts. In addition, 89 cents of every dollar raised goes toward the organization’s charitable purposes. For this reason, the DFM received the coveted, Charity Navigator fourstar rating – the highest rating awarded to nonprofit organizations and a title given to only 25 percent of all charities. The DFM is the one diabetes organization totally dedicated to all Mississippians – from children to seniors – who live with diabetes. Chips and a soft drink may be a convenient after school snack, but it doesn’t do the body any good. Believe it or not, there are snack options that not only do the body – and the brain – some good, but they taste good, too. Omega-3s are fats essential to brain development and continued brain health, vision, prevention of cardiovascular disease, and normal growth and development

throughout childhood. However, they are not produced in the body, nor are they found in many foods. Fatty fish are an excellent source off omega-3s, but fatty fish are not on most kids’ after school snack menus. However, there are other sources of omega-3s, such as Omega-3 Milk from Organic Valley. "Adding milk high in omega-3s to our daily diet is a simple, practical way to promote life-long health, and it is especially important for families with young children. Omega-3s are essential building blocks for infants and children as they grow and their brains develop," said Dr. Charles Benbrook, chief scientist of The Organic Center. With Omega-3 milk, Organic Valley complements its pasturebased organic milk—which already contains elevated levels of the naturally-occurring ALA Omega-3—with DHA and EPA, two other Omega-3 fatty acids extracted from sustainablysourced fish oil. Each glass delivers complete Omega-3 nutrition. For a mouth-pleasing, brainboosting after school snack, try serving up some of this fun String Cheese “Slaw” with a tall glass of Omega-3 milk. It may just turn chips into a snack of the past. For more information and coupons, visit www.organicvalley.coop.

String Cheese "Slaw " Prep time: 15 Minutes Servings: 6 Crayon-sized string cheese cylinders can be sliced into "buttons" or stripped into "threads," then added to salads of all stripes. Here, the cheese strips are the main ingredient in a fun, carrot-flecked slaw.

6 Organic Valley Stringles String Cheese 1 1 ⁄ 2 cups carrot, cut into matchsticks or shredded 3 tablespoons cilantro, chopped (or parsley) 4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons olive oil black pepper, freshly ground

Pull threads of cheese off each string cheese stick (not too thin). Toss with carrots, cilantro or parsley, lemon juice and olive oil. Add pepper to taste. Serve immediately, or chill the salad in the refrigerator, tossing occasionally, 1/2 to 1 hour. Serve at room temperature or chilled. Other Serving Suggestions: This also makes an unusual and fun side dish to sandwiches or burgers. Or it may be added to tacos or burritos, or piled into pita bread with sliced tomatoes.
