Introduction Hubert Gallery is pleased to present Chizuru Morii Kaplan’s third solo exhibition in the gallery. Returning to the architecture of Paris and Venice, the artist’s new series of paintings transports the viewer through their sheer virtuosity and scale. Born in Japan, Kaplan worked as an architectural renderer for such renowned clients as I.M. Pei in Tokyo before receiving critical acclaim as a watercolor artist. During the last decade, she has exhibited in galleries and venues throughout New York, including the National Arts Club, the Salmagundi Club and the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery. Her works have been featured in numerous publications, including SPLASH: The Best of Watercolor, The Artist’s Magazine and Watercolor Artist Magazine. She is a signature member of the Watercolor USA Honor Society, the Northeast Watercolor Society and an elected member of Allied Artists of America. Her works are in domestic and international private collections throughout the world.
I am captivated by not only the beauty, but by all the human conditions that echo in these buildings. Perhaps because of my experience as an architectural renderer, I know firsthand how even the smallest details reflect the skill, knowledge, emotions and physical energies of the people who gave their lives to bring these creations into being. My artistic challenge is to push myself to go deeper than a mere physical representation. I seek to reveal the human struggle and potential that contribute to the unique stories within each structure. - Chizuru Morii Kaplan
