Introduction Hubert Gallery is proud to present the works of five talented artists who have each contributed paintings featuring New York City for our Summer Group Show. Hailing from the Bay Area to the East Coast, each artist has found inspiration and a compelling desire to paint New York in their own vision and style. Some of the artists are exhibiting in the city for the first time, and we are honored to have the privilege of introducing their work to a New York and even wider audience. We hope you enjoy the beautiful and timeless works in this online catalog. The exhibition is available to view in the gallery by appointment, Monday - Saturday through August 9th.

New York Cityscapes | Summer Exhibition 2018
Stephen Bauman Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1980, Bauman trained at the Florence Academy of Art where he later taught. Upon graduation in 2003, he continued to study the works of artists he admired, including Andrew Wyeth among others. In 2016, after a decade of studying and teaching in Europe he returned to the United States upon the invitation of The Florence Academy of Art to teach and paint at their U.S. branch in Jersey City, NJ where he is currently the Director of the Anatomy and Écorche program as well as an instructor. For Bauman, the expression of mood and depth through color, line, texture, and the medium he utilizes are of utmost importance. Capturing the atmosphere of place is what drives him. He states, “The views that I paint of the bridges of New York and the moods I am expressing through them show something really intimate, though it also feels expansive. Painting them is a way for me to rediscover the city I think I know so well.” “The bridges of New York, for me, have a radiant effect on that area around them. In a city whose predominant theme is that of contested space these iconic works of architecture stand out like giant sculptures in an empty museum. Our view of these bridges as they span the river are both peaceful and vital.”

Gavin Glakas Born in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1975, Glakas now lives and works in D.C. where he is well known for his portraits of Senators and Congressmen. He studied at Washington University in St. Louis and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Glakas has shown his work in galleries across the country and has won numerous honors and awards from the Portrait Society of America and the Butler Institute of American Art. His paintings have been featured on NBC News and in major art publications such as American Art Collector and International Artist. Glakas’ paintings hang in the United States Capitol, the House of Representatives’ Armed Forces Committee, Georgetown University, The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach and the Ratner Museum in Bethesda, as well as numerous private collections. “I thrive on excitement and I’m drawn to New York - a city whose visual dynamics galvanize my imagination and thrill my senses. My work suggests that there may be a story to tell or an intensity of emotion imminently lurking nearby.”

Hsin-Yao Tseng Born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1986, Hsin-Yao Tseng received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Fine Art Painting from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in 2009 and 2012. His work has been shown in major art magazines and in galleries throughout the United States. He has won numerous awards for excellence in painting and he is recognized by the Art Renewal Center, the most respected realist art institution in the world, as an Arc Living Master. In 2016, he won the First Place awards in Southwest Art Magazine’s Artist Excellence competition. Hsin-Yao’s style is expressive and romantic, but also edgy and complex. He constantly strives toward experimentation and innovation in his work and is interested in pushing beyond what’s immediate and popular toward what is timeless and real. “New York City is a city full of energy, lights and multi-culture. I was walking on the Fifth Avenue during the winter holiday season, it was rainy and cold. I was amazed by the rainy scene of this busy street - the lights, crowd and store window reflections. The steam on the Avenue broke through the busy moment - it felt like a long pause for everyone to breath and rest.”

Lindsey Kustusch Born in 1982, outside of Chicago, Illinois, Kustusch studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Internationally recognized for her dramatic, urban city scenes, she has been exhibiting her work since 2009 in galleries across the United States, and has recently begun teaching classes and workshops all around the world. Her stylistic approach offers a compelling juxtaposition of realism and abstraction capturing the extraordinary in life’s everyday moments. Kustusch often uses palette knives and improvises other painting implements to create her works. She is recognized for the use of a rich dark palette and a fresh and experimental approach. Her two main subject matters are urban landscapes and animals, and she jumps from one to another without any difficulties. Kustusch states, “I am fascinated by the power a painting has to alter the way we see our surroundings. How everyday things can gain beauty simply because we’ve experienced them through someone else’s eyes. That is the magic behind the paint brush. Art offers us a chance to see the world differently.” “As a city dweller, the urban landscape is not only home, but a place of infinite creative interpretation. And New York City is by far one of the most eclectic and awe-inspiring cities in the world.”

Geoffrey Johnson Born in 1965 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Geoffrey Johnson graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1995, he has exhibited in galleries and venues throughout the United States and his work may be found in private and corporate collections throughout the world. He lives and works in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Johnson has explored New York City in his work for decades, yet he continues to find new and intriguing ways to present the city he knows so well. His monochromatic paintings of New York brim with the energy of the city but also contain a calmness in the simplicity of their compositions. The skyscrapers and people are his muses, and with every turn provide new insight and ideas. He states,“ There are so many aspect that make painting New York attractive to me. Clear lines and boundaries that the buildings create, the sight of people interacting in city spaces, and the way the light varies from shadows to streams. New York is a unique place in itself. Having been to major cities all over the world, there is only one New York.” “I just love the city. It’s had an impact on me from an early age. I love the architecture, and the people in the city interacting with it… the whole setting is just very appealing. I’ve never really seen it in color that much, so to me it’s very monochromatic, almost black and white. That’s the feeling I get, and that’s where the palette comes from.”
