New forestry project in Columbia secures the livelihoods of the foresters, the wood supply for Faber-Castell and improves our carbon footprint with CO2 certificates. Faber-Castell is strengthening its pioneering role as a CO2-neutral group with a new socially exemplary reforestation project in Columbia.

Faber-Castell is planting seedlings of certified wood on 1,500 hectares of former grazing land for pencil production. The revenue of the wood utilization will be shared with the land owning farmers. As well as promoting climate protection, the project offers farmers an alternative to growing drugs, securing their livelihoods and promoting internal stability in the region. The forestry project is one of the first in the UN programme “Clean Development Mechanism” – CDM, introduced as part of the Kyoto Protocol. As of 2013 Faber-Castell – probably as the first private company worldwide – will be able to trade with CO2 certificates from plantations. As a world-leader in wood-cased pencils, 100% of the wood used by Faber-Castell is from sustainable forestry, of which more than 95% is FSC-certified. Natural wood is and remains Faber-Castell‘s core area of expertise.

Even in the development stage, the environmental impact of Faber-Castell products are fully optimised by applying a product life-cycle analysis. This encompasses the raw material, the production, the service life and the disposal. Virtually all the pencils produced in the main factory in Stein are coated with an environmentally-friendly water-based paint. This is even used for the raised dots on the GRIP pencils.

Faber-Castell markers and felt-tip pens last longer. Their shafts and caps are made from polypropylene (PP) and are therefore protected to prevent them drying out quickly. Their ink will last for years. The product also has a minimal environmental impact after use, PP burns like candle wax.
