December and all of its festivities are upon us already and, as is so common these days, the years seem to be going by faster and faster!
Last month was a hugely busy one for TSH team, with a massive week at Equitana and launching into the Western and Stock saddles markets! Equitana, as expected, kept us on our toes with meeting new people and catching up with friends. Thanks to everyone who came to say hello and take home their $25 voucher and Hub Hearts for their horses. We had a blast and look forward to heading to New Zealand for next year’s event! Check out our double page spread of pics over the four days. The number of enquiries we received about western and stock saddles overwhelmed us to the point where we decided there was no going back, so it’s now official: The Saddle Hub is now accepting all western saddles, stock saddles and half breed saddles for listing on our website! And in honour of this launch we decided to make a cover star of Corey Holden and his stunning 'Amaroo Stylish Pepto' who took out the Australian Open Cutting Championships at Equitana. Sue-Ellen Lovett is not only a humble person, she’s also a hero to many of us in the Dressage arena. At the age of twelve, Sue-Ellen was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a hereditary eye disease that over time left her legally blind. This didn’t stop her passion for riding though, with her sight deteriorating every year.

Sue-Ellen is now competing open FEI on her beloved gelding Desiderata in the hopes of making Grand Prix level.

“As a blind rider I need a dependable horse - Desiderata is a lovely boy who looks after me,” Sue-Ellen said. “Eyesight wise I can see
grey fuzz, so to make the best out of our rides I train in the morning which is when the sun is on my left shoulder. By using the sun as a bit of a compass gives me my bearings and I don’t get disorientated in the arena. We train this way six days a week.” What makes Sue-Ellen truly remarkable is her positive attitude and determination to succeed. Living on a remote farm outside Dubbo, Sue Ellen doesn’t have help to look after her horse and train for her competitions. “We are really out the back of whoop-whoop so when I am at home I do all my horse activities myself. We are too remote for someone to come out and help me all the time,” Sue-Ellen explains. “I am able to venture to the paddock and catch my horse – he’s very obliging and comes when he is called. The trick is to always have a carrot! Then we tack up and head out to the arena. I put my trust in a 700kg horse to look after me – as soon as my foot is in that stirrup my life is in his hands. When riding in the arena I have to count strides so I know where I am and I do most of my work down the long sides. I use the shorter sides for my collected work
like canter pirouettes, but the majority of our schooling takes place along the sides. Desiderata will also turn the corners of the arena for me; we don’t have to be told when to turn so that makes riding easier.” When it comes to a competition, many of us just need to worry about packing the car, loading the horse and heading off. Things aren’t so easy for Sue-Ellen, who not only has to transport her horse and gear to competition venues, but also her living markers. “My living markers are people, eight of them stand at a designated letter and call out to me and act as my eyes in the arena. In a test, I rely on my living markers to assist me and there is no way I could compete without them. I’m like a moth to the flame – I listen for their calls and ride towards them. It’s a hard job to be a living marker as you need to have an understanding of dressage and need to know when to talk and when to stop.”
It’s no easy task to travel and have so many people available to help with the dressage tests, but Sue-Ellen gives thanks to Terry Snow from The Snow Foundation for his sponsorship this year and making her dreams possible. Without Terry Snow sponsoring me, I couldn’t have achieved what I have this year,” Sue-Ellen said. He has been an angel, his help has truly been appreciated and he really cares about equine sport.” Sue-Ellen never takes her horse for granted and makes the most out of every ride. “My greatest fear is one day I won’t be able to ride – it’s my reason for living,” explains Sue-Ellen. “When I’m on my horse I have my independence and mobility, it makes me just like everyone else and is such a boost to my quality of life. Feeding Foals, Weanlings and Yearlings By Tania Cubitt, PhD, Hygain Nutritionist
Fewer topics in equine nutrition stir more controversy than feeding the growing horse. Many factors add to the confusion of providing nutrition throughout these critical stages of life. For example, growing horses may have different commercial end points. Some will be shown in halter futurities where maximum growth and condition are required at a young age. Others will be prepared for sale, again requiring a “well-grown” individual and many will be kept on the farm to be used as replacement horses or future performance horses. These horses often have less pressure on them to look their best at a young age.

A healthy foal will grow rapidly, gaining in height, weight and strength almost before your eyes. From birth to age two, a young horse can achieve 90 percent or more of its full adult size, sometimes putting on as much as 1.5kg per day. Feeding young horses is a balancing act, as the nutritional start a foal gets can have a profound effect on its health and soundness for the rest of its life. As the foal’s dietary requirements shift from milk to feed and forage, your role in providing adequate nutrition is vital.

The critical nutrients for growth are protein (amino acids), minerals and vitamins. Nutrition imbalances have been recognized as one potential cause of growth disorders in young growing horses. Therefore, it is important that the diets of young horses be properly balanced with nutrients known to be vital for optimum development.
When you plan a feeding program for your young horses, several important factors need to be considered: • Body changes involved in growth, • Nutrient requirements of that particular breed of horse, • The feed’s nutrient content, • Anatomical limitations of a young horses’ digestive system. For example, you cannot feed young horses low-energy, bulky feeds because their digestive tracts are not large enough. Instead, young horses need concentrated sources of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals.
The Nursing Foal Foals will meet their nutritional requirements in their first 2-3 months of age from the mare’s milk and pasture. If a foal and mare are in good condition, the foal does not need to start creep feeding until it is at least 2 months old. However, some may need to start creep feeding by 30 days of age. In the third month of lactation the mare’s milk production drops while the foal’s nutritional needs keep increasing. Therefore, foals have a nutrient gap. Creep feeding (that is, using feed that the mare cannot get to) can provide the foal with extra nutrients to fill this gap. Several aspects of creep feeding are very important: • Start creep feeding when foals are about 8 to 12 weeks old. Make sure the feed is fresh daily and that foals are consuming it adequately.
• Use a creep feeder designed so that mares cannot gain access and so that foals will not be hurt. If you do not want a field type feeder, you can tie the mare in her stable, allowing the foal to eat. • Put the creep feeder where mares gather frequently.
by the age of 12 months, yearlings can consume more kilograms of dry matter. Therefore, they need lower nutrient concentrations in their ration. Feed grain to yearlings at approximately 0.5 to 1.5 kg/100 kg of body weight. Even though yearlings require only
• Feed the creep feed at a rate of 1% of the foal’s body weight per day (max – 1 kg/100 kg of body weight). • Choose a feed that will be easy for the foal’s baby teeth to chew.
The Weanling Generally foal performance decreases immediately after weaning. To minimize this “post weaning slump,” make sure foals are consuming enough dry feed at weaning to meet their requirements. One way of doing so is by creep feeding. Managing growth during this time is very important because excessive weight gain may cause bone abnormalities and long-lasting skeletal problems. Feed weaned foals on a combination diet. Firstly, they should be fed good quality forage. They should have access to all the good quality hay they will consume and allowed all the voluntary exercise they want. Research has shown that exercise strengthens bone, increases cortical thickness and makes for a sound future athlete.
The Yearling As a yearling’s growth rate slows considerably
By the time yearlings are 18 months old (known as long yearlings), their growth rate has slowed even further. Although long yearlings only require 10% protein, you do not need to formulate a new ration for them. You can feed them the same ration as a 12 month yearling. As horses have highly individual requirements, you need to adjust feed consumption to account for changes in individual condition. Therefore, you must combine your knowledge of nutrition, your eye for condition and common sense to make the final adjustments on feed intake.

Secondly, weanlings should be fed concentrates between 0.5kg – 1.5kg per day as per the recommendations listed on the product bag. Be careful not to feed weanlings too much concentrate. If you feed them high levels of concentrates, they will grow more rapidly and this rapid growth may harm skeletal and tendon development. Therefore, adjust feed intake to avoid overfeeding.
12% crude protein in the total ration, a 14% crude protein concentrate ration gives you more flexibility. With this level, even if you use different types of hays with protein variations, the horse will still get enough protein. A 400 kg yearling may receive 1.5 to 2kg of concentrate per day plus free choice hay or pasture. The amount of concentrate required varies due to forage quality and quantity.

GLEN DENHOLM’S SPIRIT, WHO IS A REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR TO
THE ENTERTAINMENT SCENE AT SYDNEY’S ROYAL EASTER SHOW. In the late 1980’s through to late 1990’s, Glen was a crowd staple in the Carlton United Brewery Pavilion, plaiting Australian stock whips and giving a demonstration every hour. “It was a chance to educate the public on leatherwork and how the whips were used by stockmen back in the day,” Glen said. “I’ve
found that over the years our history is being lost as it’s not being passed down to the next generation, so I made my whip demonstrations fun but with historical information scatted throughout.” In 2008, Glen was the brainchild of The Horse Experience which partnered with TAFE NSW, and took place in the Schmitt Arena.

“The Horse Experience was all about educating the public on horses and showcasing the talents of our TAFE students,” Glen explains. “We had up to three shows daily which focused on riding, blacksmithing and behind the scenes work with equines. Our goal was to make horse education available to the public and we did just that; we had many visitors watching the show and coming up afterwards to ask questions and gain further knowledge. For some people who live in the city, they can’t get up close and personal with a horse so we provided a meet and greet that allowed them to pat and take pictures with the horses. It was really well received and we’ve gained a bit of momentum since then.”

Having now moved into The Horse Experience, Glen and his team have continued their educational performances. “For the last two years we have been in this new location at the showgrounds that holds more than 400 people,” Glen said. Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria began in 1973 when Val Collingwood of Victoria wrote into RIDER Magazine regarding the number of neglected horses in Australia.

PROJECT HOPE
She outlined how someone could coordinate the rescue and rehabilitation of these unfortunate animals, suggesting the name “Project Hope” in memory of a neglected, supposedly aged, buck-jumper from Queensland. Unfortunately, more than 40 years later the need for helping neglected horses is still current. Now known as Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria (PHHWV: Project Hope), it is a non-profit organisation that seeks to help neglected or abused horses through rehabilitation, education, and advocacy.
What does Project Hope do? Project hope is very active in Victoria and offers the following services to those who require them: • Investigate equine neglect or abuse • Offers advice and support to horse owners • Rehabilitation of neglected horses • Offers horses for lease once they are healthy • Provide education about horse welfare.

VARIABLES OF SADDLE VALUE Craftsmanship, Environmental and Social Factors A qualified saddler is a master craftsman, who invariably takes great pride in the saddles and strapping they produce. For many, their names are literally on the line with each saddle they make stamped with that name. In England for example, to become a master saddler involves years as an apprentice and exams before you are accredited. These master craftsmen oversee or create a saddle from the initial selecting of hides to the finished product. For the trained (and even untrained) eye there is no comparison between this workmanship to that of a production line worker stitching leather piece work that will be jig-sawed into a saddle later.

A master saddler has an expectation that the saddle they make will be suited to the task it is made for, will work with the biomechanics of horse and rider and above all will last and give years of service. As in many industries the quality control measures will be higher in more developed countries and the saddler will be required to meet or exceed those quality control requirements.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are saddles made in developing nations where
quality control measures are not in place, corners are cut to keep costs low and factory workers stitching leather for long hours are unfamiliar with horses and do not have the knowledge to recognise potential problems. Look carefully on your purchase, a saddle stamped “designed in Germany” may indeed be designed there but made in Argentina, China or India. Without doubt I know in which situation I would prefer the saddle that I ride in is made… when hurtling over jumps, swinging around barrels or trying to achieve perfect balance in dressage that last thing a rider wants to be considering is if the saddle will fail at a crucial point. Saddle manufacturing mirrors the dilemma faced in almost all manufacturing sectors. A saddle made in Australia for example will be made under our wage, environmental and quality regulations. These factors will all increase the value of that saddle and the cost to manufacture. A saddle made by a member of the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) in England will be expected to comply with strict protocols and manufacturing requirements. Quality and ethical production comes at a price, it is for you, the purchaser to decide what value you will place on these.

The Riding Mum has a couple of two legged kids as well as a varying number of the four legged variety in the form of horses, dogs, cats, chickens and the odd rodent that comes and goes (although admittedly, the chickens only have 2 legs not 4 which is probably a good thing) who all live together on the Happy Family Farm with one VERY long suffering other half. Needless to say, life is many things, but dull it is not! We look forward to hearing her monthly tales of juggling, kids, horses, and life in general.

Anyhoo back to the whirlwind: as any self respecting horse owner would know, bute sachets are best kept in the fridge if you want them to last and, if your horses decide to regularly engage in the non-self-preserving antics that mine do, you need to keep a supply on hand! So I keep mine in the fridge. On the second shelf for easy reach. Right under those cups of SPC fruit the kids like to take to school for fruit break. Hmmmm.

A Cautionary Tale

So, one day I sent my son to school with drugs. And I’m not talking about the prescription kind that you get from the chemist. (I can already sense the raised eyebrows and disapproving frowns from this side of the computer, don’t worry I know, who does that right?!) Not surprisingly, his school took a dim view of the little packet of white

My ride time window would have shrunk by a solid half hour – and I would have been in trouble for doing the drop off in the 3 day old jods and shirt I had been throwing on to hang around the horses. On a completely unrelated note, once upon a time, not so long ago, I used to get dressed up every day in a skirt suit, heels and makeup and drive to a perfectly respectable and air conditioned office. Funnily enough, the kids never complained about me doing the school drop off or pick up in those days – I still don’t know why!).

I do take comfort in the thought though that while ever me and the fam are living on the farm, spending all our money on animals and motorbikes and the latest fad in saddle cloths (with extra pink, shiny bling please) my children will never have the resources to buy the real thing – do horses, not drugs darlings. Yes they are more expensive in dollars but you do get so much more for your buck! (Often in more ways than one) What other hobby is so all consuming in both time and money that it keeps your kids too broke and busy to be bothered
with other less healthy options? But I have accepted that I will occasionally be getting the odd look from a MOY or a strange phone call from school letting me know about the latest
