You need to sit down as a couple and decide what type of music best suits the two of you.
It all depends on the style of your wedding whether you want softer music for a subdued background sound or whether you want a fullon band to take your and your guests through the evening party.
The first musical consideration is your choice for walking down the aisle. At one time, it was always Here Comes The Bride but these days, anything goes. A soft tempo contemporary song with real meaning for the bride and groom can be a great choice and can set the whole mood for the wedding day.
These days there are all kinds of choices for wedding music - from a classical harpist to a string quartet, a saxophonist to a band.

Slice and easy BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO AREN’T BIG CAKE FANS. AND THERE’S AN EMERGING WEDDING TREND THAT SUPPORTS THIS THEORY, WITH MANY BRIDES AND GROOMS OPTING TO DITCH THE CAKE COMPLETELY…
T
HERE was once a time when a three-tiered fruit cake was the focal point of any wedding buffet, and to go without would be sacrilege. Now, however, like most wedding traditions, the formalities of the wedding cake have gone out the window. If you want a giant jelly and an ice cream bar, that’s fine. If you want a chocolate fountain, not a problem, and if you want a cascading tower of cupcakes, your guests certainly aren’t going to complain! For those who just aren’t part of the BakeOff set or perhaps for health reasons (like Coeliacs) can’t eat cake, there are plenty of alternatives out there which will wow and impress your guests just as much as a traditional tiered cake.
Pie in the sky Who says a cake needs to be sweet? The humble pork pie is the perfect shape for stacking. A tier of pies won’t fail to put a smile on anyone’s face, and gourmet pies
crumble or Aunt Clare’s classic coffee sponge. come in an array of tasty fillings, alongside classic Melton Mowbray. Why not try ham Candy crush and chicken, chicken and apricot, turkey and cranberry or pork and pickle? Traditional hotKeeping guests young and old topped up with water crusts work best as they’re strong and sugar is simple with the addition of a candy rigid and will hold their shape all day long. Ask bar. Opt for pretty pastel shades that match your caterer to cut your theme or go and divide the pies all out and offer a later for a great rainbow-filled table buffet treat. LIKE MOST WEDDING of old favourites like TRADITIONS, THE flying saucers, pear Bake me a drops, humbugs cake FORMALITIES OF and chocolate limes. Whether it’s to THE WEDDING CAKE Display in vintage keep costs to a glass jars and bowls HAVE GONE OUT THE minimum or to give for added style your guests more WINDOW points. Invite guests variety – a WI-style to fill paper bags baking competition and the sweets can is a great way even double up as a wedding favour – double to involve guests in your big day. Ask the savings! creative cake types among your attendees to bring along a homemade cake or dessert and have a cake station where guests can vote for their favourite and enjoy a slice or two of apple
Top of the pops There’s no need to slice or plate up with
a pretty cake pop. Usually a cake crumb combined with buttercream or a sticky ganache-style filling, cake pops are an indulgent bite that can be dipped in a range of finishes to match your colour scheme or coated in sugar sprinkles or chopped nuts. Always popular with children, cake pops are an easier and often more cost-effective way to give guests a little bit of what they fancy.
Goud-a times You really can’t go wrong with a good wedge of local farmhouse cheese. Cheese ‘cakes’, towers of Cornish Yarg, Red Leicester, crumbly Cheshire, ripe Brie and Shropshire Blue are adorning wedding buffets across the country – they’re a great alternative for those who prefer a savoury finish to their meal. Serve with a selection of biscuits and crackers and you’ll not only have a wonderful talking point but a lot of satisfied guests too!

F a friend, sister or loved one has asked you to do the honour of being their bridesmaid, you’ll no doubt be thrilled and excited at the thought of accompanying your bestie on her big day. but if you think it’ll be all plain sailing, now’s the time for a reality check! even the closest of friendships will be tested at some stage or another during the months leading to your beloved bridezilla’s wedding.
Even the sweetest, most inoffensive types will have a ‘moment’ whether it’s at the bridal store, when she can’t fit into the miniscule sample size, on her hen do when you’ve failed to get her that butler in the buff she was expecting, or on the big day when you haven’t created the right soft curl, and you solely as maid of honour have ‘ruined everything’. That’s not to say being a bridesmaid won’t be brilliant fun – but do be prepared to be the most diplomatic, enigmatic and coolest version of yourself you can possibly be.
To help you achieve that highly sought-after ‘Star Bridemaid’ status, here are some tips to help you glide through the proceedings with your dignity (and dress) intact.
Know your duties As bridesmaid, it falls to you to organise the best hen do ever, help your bride find her dream dress (and never fail to tell her how perfect she looks), offer to partake in any creative DIY tasks – no matter how outlandish – and most importantly, keep your bride calm and collected on the big day…
Party planning The hen do is surely one of the highlights of being bridesmaids, but if you’ve ever tried to organise 15 or more women, you’ll know it’s not without its pitfalls. Understand early on that you won’t please everyone; some people don’t drink shots – no matter how persuasive you think you can be, it will take at least three hours to get 12 women washed, shaved, blow-dried, prepped, preened and dressed before a night
out, and someone will get emotional and cry (most likely the bride). Your best plan of action is to start your prep work early. Find out who your bride wants at the hen do, get in touch with them and find out when they’re available, for how many nights they can be away for, if any, and how much they are willing to spend. Once you have your list of hen attendees and an idea of budget you can start looking at suitable destinations. Again be aware, if you’re planning a surprise, it’s likely the bride will find out where you’re going – they always do. Likewise, at least one person will drop out after paying the deposit – this is just the way it goes. For minimum hen stress, plan any meals out, get on club guest lists and pre-book taxis and transport for minimum whinging. Finally, give hens as few options as possible, otherwise you’ll end up with too many opinions and a banging headache.

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR BRIDESMAIDS IS THE FINAL HURDLE – THE WEDDING DAY ITSELF. EVEN THE COOLEST BRIDE WON’T BE HERSELF ON THE BIG DAY
Dress to impress Don’t pick a dress with only yourself and how stunning you will look in mind. Be aware of what your bride will be wearing and help pick out dresses that you are comfortable in and which complement the wedding theme and her dress. Don’t be surprised if your bride has strong opinions on what she wants you to wear, but likewise, if you hate one she picks out speak up straightaway – there’s nothing worse than a bridesmaid shooting daggers at the bride as she stomps down the aisle! Be conscious of price tags and ask your bride her budget to ensure you’re not asking too much when you fall for a £500 dress you’ll probably only ever wear once.
Keep calm The biggest challenge for bridesmaids is the final hurdle – the wedding day itself. Even the coolest bride won’t be herself on the big day; she’ll be super nervous and most likely a little
stressed. The smallest things will seem like major world-scale catastrophes, so be prepared to keep small hyperactive children out of the way as you seamlessly jump from children’s entertainer to Hollywood-worthy make-up artist and seamstress. While you may be peddling away frantically below the surface, be sure to appear coolheaded at all times. A smile can get you out of many tricky situations, and continually tell the bride how beautiful/stunning/pretty/breathtaking she looks. Once your bride is carefully deposited at the foot of the alter with her new husband, you can breathe a sigh of relief, stuff yourself silly with expensive canapés and enjoy that well-earned glass of fizz (or five). You have won your place in the successful bridesmaid hall of fame, dancing with every over-enthusiastic uncle, small child and geriatric pensioner at the party along the way, before stampeding to catch the bouquet to seek your revenge… I mean ask the bride to return the favour!

The next thing to consider, says Sarah, is the style of wedding cake. Her and Chris are planning to choose a traditional three-tier wedding cake to tie in with the overall wedding colour theme.

Sarah said: “At the moment we are thinking of hot pink for the reception decorations and our wedding cake to contrast to the soft pink chosen for the bridesmaids.’’ The couple’s winning wedding package includes a wedding reception for 60 day guests and 80 evening guests at the John Smith’s Stadium complete with a wedding

ANNIVERSARY YEAR E S EAR
HOW LOVELY IT T IS TO READ EAD DETAIL E ET S ABOUT ELDERLY COUPLES MARKING THEIR GOLDEN AND DIAMOND WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES.
S
eems a long time off - but hopefully some of today’s newly married couples will one day mark one of these very special occasions. Once you’ve tied the knot, you can begin to mark your anniversary years. We’ve all heard of them - paper, lace, pearl, ruby etc - but what are the exact anniversary years and what is the significance of each name. The first wedding anniversary is said to be a paper anniversary and popular gifts for this occasion include a pen and stationery, a book of love or other romantic gift. Your second anniversary is said to be a cotton anniversary, followed by leather (three years), fruit/flowers (four years), wood (five years), iron (six years), copper (seven years), bronze (eight years), pottery (nine years) and tin/aluminium (10 years). Historically the 14th wedding anniversary was ivory, but this is now seen as unethical because of elephant poaching. Moving on through the teens, your 20th wedding anniversary is a china celebration and then, of course, five years later comes the first major celebration of a marriage, the 25th anniversary which is a silver wedding. Many couples hold a big celebration for their silver wedding, often inviting family and friends to join them for the special occasion. If it’s summer, some couples hold a barbecue in the garden to mark the event, while others invite family and friends for a special meal out. Some couples choose to push the boat out and jet off on a holiday to a distant exotic location.
The next big occasion in any relationship is the 30th anniversary which is always referred to as the pearl wedding. Following this, five years later at 35 years is the coral wedding and then one of the most popular, the ruby wedding which marks 40 years of marriage. One of the most popular gifts for a ruby wedding (and other noteable anniversaries) is a rose tree for the garden. Local garden centres have a wide selection of roses for all occasions including silver, ruby, gold and diamond wedding anniversaries and this is an excellent lasting memento of a special anniversary. Once planted in the garden, it is a daily reminder of a special time in a marriage. The 45th wedding anniversary is called a sapphire wedding and then five years later, comes the big one, the golden wedding which is often featured in many local newspapers with couples posing for a photograph and giving information about themselves. Reaching your golden wedding is a really big achievement for couples as often, by this stage, one or both can be quite elderly. An even greater milestone is the 60th or diamond wedding anniversary which is today quite a rare achievement and only celebrated by relatively few couples. Today’s greetings cards manufacturers have all anniversaries covered - with cards available for all the major wedding celebrations so you’ve no excuse for forgetting these remarkable milestones.
REACHING YOUR GOLDEN WEDDING IS A REALLY BIG ACHIEVEMENT FOR COUPLES AS OFTEN, BY THIS STAGE, ONE OR BOTH CAN BE QUITE ELDERLY

Get on your H
AS your bridegroom got two left feet? Potential problem then, if you want your new husband to join you for your first dance as a married couple.
However help is at hand. Ever since Strictly Come Dancing came to our TV screens, the UK’s interest in dancing has risen and now local dancing schools regularly help future brides and grooms with their dancing prowess. Have a word with your local dancing school and see if one of their teachers can help you with a waltz, foxtrot, quickstep or your own individual style of dance. Those two left feet can be banished forever as your groom learns the rudimentals of dancing. He might even surprise you with how good he turns out to be after a few lessons! It’s bound to be a nerve-wracking few minutes for both the bride and the groom but a first dance is an important part of any evening wedding party. So what about the music for the dance? Most couples choose a song which has a special meaning for them both. Maybe it’s their song or one which reminds them of a special time in their relationship. There are certain songs which are always popular choices but choose the one which is right for your relationship.

When it comes to choosing the right dance for your moment in the spotlight, it’s worth doing a bit of research first.
The Waltz: this is the oldest of the ballroom dances, dating from the 18th Century. The forerunner of the dance is the German `lander’, a folk dance. The dance developed after this and owes its name to the Latin word Volvere, which means a rotating movement. When the Waltz was first introduced, it caused outrage as it was the first dance where a couple danced in a closed position with the man’s hand around the waist of his female partner. A fast version of the Waltz is the Viennese Waltz, a type of dance which can cause dizziness problems due to the constant spinning motion of the dance.
The Foxtrot: this is a smooth dance with long flowing movements across the dance floor. It is usually danced to big band music and was developed in the 1910s, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1930s. The exact origin of the dance in unsure but rumour has it that the inspiration for the Foxtrot was The Memphis Blues, an autobiography
written by W C Handy, the Father of the Blues. In the 1940s the Foxtrot was the most popular dance and many records of the time were big band medleys which had the ideal tempo for this popular dance.
The Quickstep: this may be a fast dance for a novice with two left feet but a clever dance instructor could incorporate a few elements from it into a routine. It is a light-hearted dance and danced to upbeat melodies. The dance was developed in New York in the 1920s and is thought to originate from a combination of the Slow Foxtrot and the Charleston. Dancers ancers need to be very light on their feet and the dance is very energetic, smooth and glamorous. During uring the Strictly Come Dancing programme, the Quickstep is always one of the most popular routines.

It doesn’t have to be bubbles… Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to serve champagne at a ‘champagne reception’. Surprisingly, few people can tell the difference between a bottle of real champers and a really good bottle of Prosecco or sparkling Chardonnay. More and more couples are opting for cheaper – but still highly quaffable – alternatives. For those who find champagne on the dry side, Barefoot Pink Bubbly is a solid sweeter alternative for those who want a slightly lower percentage of alcohol while still enjoying a glass of bubbly. Barefoot Pink Bubbly has an RRP of £9.99 Tesco / Sainsbury’s / ASDA
All the fizz, none of the headache Whether you’ve a guest who’s not quite ready to reveal her early pregnancy, designated drivers or tee-totallers, you can provide an alcohol-free drink that isn’t orange squash.
