Heart of the show!
THE constant quest for new attractions helps to keep Honley Show fresh and interesting for the thousands of visitors who stream through the gates year after year.
But always at the heart of the event is the showing of livestock, with numerous classes and literally hundreds of animals on display. Cattle feature largely in every sense with some 18 trophies to be contested in what will no doubt prove to be a series of highly competitive events. They include the David Mitchell Design Trophy for the best highland calf, the James Beever Trophy for the best butcher’s beast and the G. Neary Trophy for the supreme champion in the pedigree beef section.

Livestock pulls in the crowds This is, however, merely the tip of a very large iceberg as a glance at the list of classes reveals. In addition to the special trophies up for grabs, a further 45 cattle classes will be attracting numerous entrants. Who could fail to be delighted by the sight of a mother and calf or maiden heifers under two years old? The centrepiece of the cattle section will be the showground parade at 3pm when all the entrants will appear in the judging ring and trophies will be presented. Sheep: Ten trophies will be contested this year for various breeds including Suffolk, Whitefaced Woodland and Texel. Overall, some 40 classes are open for entries and several are sure to attract plenty of attention from younger showgoers
especially, with many featuring lambs newly born this year. Rare breeds have not been forgotten and Honley Show presents an ideal opportunity to see some breeds which are not usually common in the fields around the region. Classes are being run for both Jacobs and Black Ryland. Poultry: This is invariably one of the most popular livestock exhibition areas and this year promises to be very well supported indeed with over 70 different classes of birds and eggs on display and being judged. If you ever wanted to see exotic birds such as Indian and Jubilee bantams, White Call ducks, or Soft Feather hens, then this is your big chance.

It’s the perfect day out for the family IT’S the ideal family day out, offering a varied mix of countryside based entertainment in splendid surroundings.
Honley Show 2008 – taking place on Saturday June 14 - promises to be one of the best and most diverse yet, with more attractions than ever before including some new and innovative crafts and other events on show to delight and entertain. Building on the enviable reputation of being one of the country’s leading outdoor agricultural based shows, the organisers have compiled a breathtaking array of attractions. ‘Something for everyone’ is their aim. From grannies to babes in arms, and all ages in between, Honley Show will be providing some 10 hours of non-stop entertainment. Last year’s attendance figures broke all records with some 15,000+ visitors being recorded. The organisers are looking to build on this success in 2008 and are anticipating visitors from all over the north of England, and many from even further afield. The showground at Farnley Tyas is well equipped for such crowds. Apart from its vast size, the site is mainly flat and easily accessed. Free transport will be provided through the day to and from Honley village centre. Just 15 minutes from Huddersfield, it boasts one of the country's most picturesque locations for a one-day rural show, overlooking vast expanses of beautiful countryside in all directions, Renowned for offering a cornucopia of exhibits designed to appeal to every possible section of the community, show organisers have been busy over the past twelve months scouring the countryside for attractions to keep everyone interested and active throughout the day. From the number and variety of displays and demonstrations, it is clear they have been highly
Breathtaking array of attractions successful in their endeavours. This year the tractor section has been successful in attracting sponsorship from local estate agents Simon Blyth. Over 30 interesting, unusual, vintage and rare machines will be on static display, as well as taking part in the tractor parade, an event which proved extremely popular last year. Complementing this mechanical extravaganza will be a collection of vintage cars and motorcycles, together with model petrol and steam engines, most of which will be working throughout the day. In the main show circle, last year’ s superb falconry display is back by popular demand and visitors will also be able to cheer on their favourites at the ferret races. In and around the showground, balloon artists, plate spinners, unicyclists and jugglers will be amusing the crowds whilst the children will be more than amply provided for with numerous energy-sapping attractions to allow them to burn

off their excess exuberance, no doubt much to the delight of their parents or carers. Kirklees Light Railway will be chugging away merrily along on a section of specially constructed track giving rides to all. Face painting will no doubt prove as popular as ever and there’s also the climbing wall, trampolines, inflatable slides, “beat-the-goalie”, swings, Laser-Quest and quad bikes. While all this is going on Mums and Dads can be taking a well earned break, perhaps enjoying refreshments bought from the food and beer tents or an ice cream. The gates open at 8.30am and the show goes on until late. Be there or be disappointed!

Going to the dogs?
Spring to it and test your own pet’s agility
Some of rarest breeds on display AN amazing 67 different breeds of dog will be on show during the day – and this gives visitors the opportunity to see some of the country's rarest breeds.
Special demonstrations to look out for include the Springer dogs agility trials - an event that is always a great crowd pleaser. Also in attendance will be the massed hounds of the Holme Valley, Colne Valley and Pennine Foxhounds together with their handlers. Honley Show has a long standing tradition of successfully displaying numerous classes of pet animals in separate tents. These include rabbits, mice and cavies (guinea pigs), and this year they will all be back by popular demand. These are the pet areas where children and parents simply have to visit to sample the delights of the soft and cuddly of the animal world. Numerous classes will be contested, but for the very large majority of visitors the winners will be of secondary importance to the squeals of delight of children of all ages.

MEMBERS of Springers Agility and Flyball Club are adopting a new approach this year. Not only will they be showing you how they perform their agile antics, they will also be inviting you to have a go yourself. Springers will be giving two 40 minute displays during the day. Come along with your canine companion and see for yourself how much fun you can have. Be there for 10.15am to see the mobile athleticism of handler and dog as together they negotiate the agility obstacles, not just one but several dogs passing each other skilfully around the course. In addition to this, club members will be giving a demonstration of heelwork and obedience skills with a slight twist!! The ring will be open to the public at various intervals throughout the day when people with pets will be invited to show their mettle on the bale scurry and agility course. The second performance at 3.30pm will feature the flyball teams in motion, demonstrating how beginner dogs are taught the sport. Finally, you can enjoy a tournament style race between the teams. Four-legged friends galore THE equestrian fraternity will again be well catered for at this year's Honley Show.
Entries are invited for eight main classes and prizes are many and varied with six being contested in the donkey section alone and over 50 in total. And now, to quote Monty Python, for something completely different. Adding an element of fun will be sack and potato races in the open gymkhana event together with a prize for the best fancy dressed mounted rider. The ever popular showjumping section will no doubt be keenly contested and avidly watched as both junior and senior riders attempt a series of courses on their steeds. Light and heavy horses will also feature as part of the day’s events – together with mountain and moorland classes. Show-goers always love to see ponies on parade. And among the breeds to look out for this year
Horse-play and some serious competition! are those originating on Exmoor, Dartmoor, Shetland, The New Forest, Connemara, Highland, The Dales, The Fell and Wales. Equine technology is also not forgotten. Local marketing consultants Susan Kenyon Marketing will be demonstrating and assisting with the launch of “Stable-Cam”. This security device is designed to offer security and peace of mind to horse owners when their four-legged friends are safely tucked up in bed at night.

How you can be of help...
THE scope and variety of the handicrafts section in 2007 were positively "massive" according to the show's organising team. And this year's event looks highly likely to eclipse even the record number of entrants of 12 months ago, making the handicrafts area one of the best attended of the entire show. The classes open to entrants are simply too numerous to mention and anyone interested in bringing along an exhibit is advised to visit the show web site to determine which section might best accommodate their craft item. There are no fewer than 63 sections to choose from, including home made wines, embroidery, jams, fashion design, textiles, clay-work, computer generated images, breads, flowers and photography. Complementing the overall handicrafts competition, special prizes will also be awarded in each of four areas including the Honley Show Society Perpetual Trophy for the best handicraft exhibit. Additional special prizes will also be awarded to schools and individuals in the junior classes. If you want to witness diversity and craftsmanship at its best and its most varied, this is a tent not to be missed. Web: www.honleyshow.co.uk
Have a go and build a career
DRY stone walling has been a popular attraction at Honley Show for almost 20 years - with expert wallers demonstrating their skills and giving a chance for anyone interested to have a go. West Yorkshire branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain organises an 'open to all' competition at the show. This year there will be five classes ranging from professionals to juniors. Entry fee is £5 but everyone who is not a prizewinner gets this back on completion of their section of wall. The branch will have a marquee on the showground adjacent to the competition and will also be carrying out a demonstration close to the countryside marquee. Any dry stone walling queries can be answered at either place. A full programme of activities is arranged throughout the year including training courses suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their skill, practice sessions, talks to interested organisations, nationally accredited vocational certification sessions, plus regular monthly meetings to which all are welcome. MORE helpers are urgently needed to get ready for the big show. And your assistance will be invaluable after the big event itself. The smooth running of the event relies entirely on volunteers coming forward from Honley and surrounding areas. Help is particularly vital during the evenings from Monday June 9 onwards leading up to the day of the show on Saturday June 14. Duties involve preparing the ground and marking out and moving equipment. Also, further back-up for up to two days after the show to tidy everything away would also be much appreciated. On the day, help is needed directing traffic and visitors, litter management, as well as assisting exhibitors and general duties to name but a few of the numerous tasks which need to be carried out effectively to ensure things run without a hitch. If you feel you can spare a few hours at any of these times – or wish to become more actively involved with the 2008 show in any way – contact John Warren on 01484 661072. Your help will be very much appreciated.

HARE TODAY: Belgian Hares were amongst visitors to a recent show. There are many fur and rex breeds on show again this year.
Countless country crafts are on show
IF ever you wanted to learn a little more about bee keeping, wood turning or dry stone walling, here's your chance.
Similarly, if fly tying and fishing float your boat, a demonstration of this fascinating art is definitely one for the 'must-see' list. Countless country crafts will be on display or demonstrated in the countryside marquees keeping with the spirit of Honley Show as the region’s major outdoor, agricultural based event. Entertaining as well as informative, they show how people of all ages and interests can get involved. There are competitions, demonstrations and practical activities, as well as organisations looking for your support and membership. Hedge laying and countryside leisure will feature this year. And there will be stands representing The Historical Association, the Trans Pennine Trail and countryside marquee sponsor Yorkshire Water, as well as talks about allotment ownership. The fascinating and ancient craft of walking stick making and carving will also be returning this year and there will be a regional competition reflecting the growing interest in this pastime.
Beekeeping could get you hooked
The show's organisers believe it is vital to invest in the future of our landscape and in the management of our countryside. A new initiative this year is the sponsoring of primary school visits to see farms in action and to see how local food is produced. The first visits took place in April 2008, and it is hoped to continue this programme for the next few years to make sure that all children in Honley can benefit. Thanks go to Mrs Asher of Honley Infants and Mrs Haigh of Honley Juniors for making this happen. Visit the Countryside Marquee to see a display of photographs and work by the pupils on show day. Tastebuds will be also be very well catered for, as ever, with cookery demonstrations throughout the day and a chance to sample some of the culinary creations.
