ormally we use this page to let you know about the features packed into your favourite magazine. But this time we have to say a little more about our fantastic Huddersfield Design feature on page 12.
We wanted to feature an outfit from each of the five, and decided it would be a great opportunity to raise the profile of local jewellers at the same time. Our only regret was that no one in Huddersfield makes shoes - yet!
We were so keen to show off all the incredible clothes and accessories designed and made right here in Huddersfield that we didn’t leave much room for the words! So here goes . . .
It also seemed like a good time to make use of a local hairdresser and makeup artists. Katie Galvin, a qualified hairdresser, has just completed a PGCE course at the University and will now be focusing on teaching.
N
We’re not sure when we realised that there were so many young designers creating exciting fashion right here in Huddersfield, but we decided that it was definitely time to showcase them and their work.

In the last few months three have moved into Byram Arcade, two making their clothing on the premises: Hardy Punglia at The Left Bank, Memoonah Latif at Meem and Leoncia Murphy at Sasa Loves. The Arcade is really now becoming the place we always wanted it to be, full of creative people and unique shops. The Textile Centre of Excellence on Leeds Road is home to the Design Incubator, for new design businesses. Currently, two of the ‘incubatees’ are designing clothing and accessories: Juko Designs and Rockwife.
Jade Hutton has recently finished her beauty course at the Technical College, and plans to take a degree as a makeup artist. Her friend Alexandra Pickering works as a freelance makeup artist as well. We all got together at the Textile Centre of Excellence, where Katie, Jade and Alexandra worked with model Rachel to create looks to complement the outfits we had borrowed from our five budding Yves St Laurents (or Alexander McQueens, or Vivienne Westwoods . . . or whoever your favourite designer is!) We are thrilled with the results, and think you will be too. So what are you waiting for? Check it out now!

Model - Karen Dineen Location - Creative Arts Building, University of Huddersfield Hair - Toni & Guy Makeup - Emma Crossland
Our makeover this issue features Karen Dineen, Head of Fundraising for The West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust - the local charity that is raising funds to build and run a children’s hospice.
Stylist - Alison Campbell Stylist’s Assistant - Frances Bolton Photographer - Jan Dennis at photographybyjan
K
aren, who has many years of fundraising experience, joined the trust in April. She says, “I remember Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice - near where I live in South Yorkshire - fundraising as we are. I recently visited the finished centre, and found it so encouraging and inspiring. It makes me even more determined to provide support for the children and families of West Yorkshire.” £3 million is needed to build the hospice with ongoing running costs estimated to be over £1.5 million per year. The Trust is almost half way toward the building costs, and Karen says, “we are always exploring new ways of raising money and are delighted to hear from anyone who wants to help - I am continually overwhelmed by people’s generosity.”

Erica Broughton decides to give Karen a wide, heavy fringe to frame her face. Karen laughs and says, “I used to have a fringe but my daughter told me to grow it out!” Erica explains that a heavy fringe will go with straight or curly hair, or can be swept to one side for a different style. By keeping most of the length the style will be versatile, and can be put up out of the way. Karen wears suits for work, and tends to put on jeans and a t-shirt for more casual wear. She says her wardrobe is mostly black, so we have decided to get her to try some colour. We have also decided to get her wearing dresses and skirts, as she has had to think hard about whether she actually even owns one!

Our first stop is at Toni & Guy, where a whole team is ready and waiting for us. Gemma Azzopard looks at Karen’s existing colour, and says that she wants to put in some ashy highlights to tone down the warmth of the existing blonde. She also covers the warmth of the darker section with a semi-permanent dark brown. “I think Karen needs cooler tones to suit her colouring,” says Gemma. “With the amount of colour already on her hair, it will take some time to achieve, but we have made a start!”

We are joined there by makeup artist Emma Crossland, who has loads of experience with makeovers, weddings and photographic makeup. She creates a subtle, natural daytime look for our first few outfits.
We ease into things with a very elegant black and white skirt from The Left Bank, teamed with a white top from Kitten Heels. Although this sounds like a fairly standard office outfit, both items have a strong design-led stylishness. A smart black portfolio from Cellini, shoes from Moda in Pelle at Peters and a set of Pilgrim jewellery from new shop Stonez complete the modern look. Next up we have chosen a beautiful navy hooded dress, knitted in a fine, soft wool, from Pixie Boutique. Teamed with chunky boots and bag and a soft leather jacket, all from Pixie, the look is very modern without going over the top. Pretty jewellery by Guess from Stonez and Finesse in Beatties make sure that the look isn’t too heavy.
This page: Dress - Kitten Heels Jacket - Pixie Boutique Shoes - Kitten Heels Sunglasses - Karen Millen at House of Fraser
Having eased Karen away from solid black, we now go for some full-on colour. A patterned skirt in pinks and purples teams up with a lovely raspberry cardigan, both from Monsoon. The white camisole from Wallis provides a perfect low-key match. Shoes from Office pick up perfectly on the colours and style of the skirt, and the necklace and bangles by Starinbar from Stonez provide a slightly chunky complement to the feminine feel. >
Above: Skirt - Monsoon Camisole - Wallis Cardigan - Monsoon Shoes - Office Necklace, bangles - Starinbar at Stonez
Erica has joined us for the afternoon, to help out with new hairstyles for the different outfits. She does some soft backcombing to give Karen a fuller, windswept style to go with the stronger eyes and lips provided by Emma. We have teamed a lovely dress from Kitten Heels with a stunning leather jacket from Pixie. We decide the only accessories we need are patent leather wedges and some Jackie O sunglasses for the full retro effect. Everyone is getting into the swing of things now, and our makeover is morphing into a full-on fashion shoot! Bright red lipstick and a sleek up-do give our next outfit a real edge. A ruffled blouse and black waistcoat from Pixie dress up jeans from Principles, and everyone falls in love with the high red suede shoes from Office. “This was the one thing I really wanted to make sure I got to wear bright red shoes!” exclaims Karen. Sparkly jewellery from Noemi in Beatties adds the required touch of bling. >

Our next outfit sounds boring - skirt and t-shirt - but it’s anything but! The ruffled tartan skirt from The Left Bank only needs the plain white top from Wallis; anything else would be too much. Especially with the fuchsia patent strappy platforms from Moda in Pelle, the chunky charm bracelets and necklace from Stonez, and the backcombed bob created by Erica. Full-on funkiness is achieved with our final look. We have found a dress in vintage shop Magic that could have been made for Karen, it fits so perfectly. A retro bag from Magic, retro-style shoes from Faith and a bangle from Pixie pick up on the orange-red in the pattern of the dress. Erica creates a huge beehive hairstyle, accessorised by a massive black bow she has been dying to use. Emma has also pulled out all the stops, with even smokier eyes and bright lipstick chosen to match bag and shoes. Karen has provided her own necklace, and is keen to point out that it comes from the Forget-Me-Not Trust shop in Lindley.
Everyone has had a fantastic time, and Karen is thrilled with the clothes. “The only thing I would actually even have taken off the hanger before was the jeans,” she laughs. “I absolutely hated that ruffled blouse, but now I love it!” She confirms that she will be shopping for colours now. “I think we tend to choose black because we think it’s safe,” she says. “I have been given some great ideas, and have a much better knowledge of the colours I can wear now. I’m looking forward to my next shopping trip.”

Huddersfield We all know Kevan Jon, who has been designing his own range of clothing right here in Huddersfield, but did you know that there is a whole new crew of exciting young designers out there right now?

Byram Arcade alone plays host to three, each of them working away in their own shops. The Design Incubator at the Textile Centre of Excellence on Leeds Road is also home to a group of talented people designing everything from fabrics to clothing and accessories. We got five outfits from five designers, accessorised them with jewellery from four more, and took it all to the Textile Centre of Excellence for a photoshoot. Read on to find out a bit more about each one - and admire the fabulous and funky fashions!
Maria Lau
Julie Ann Seaman Tel: 07801 371644
Artspace 2, Bates Mill, Queen Street South www.marialau.co.uk Maria Lau creates jewellery from an eclectic range of materials, using simple techniques such as braiding and knotting that become more complex through the process of making and manipulation. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in Mixed Media Textiles in 2003, and jewellery was a natural progression after experimenting with diverse materials to create hand and body accessories. Inspired by ethnic adornment, Japanese crafts and the female form, her work blurs boundaries and creates unconventional jewellery that reflects a harmony between casual and luxury. “I love to combine metals and semi-precious stones with materials more associated with clothing.” Maria has provided work on commission for Michiko Koshino and DKNY, and launched her most recent collection at the Tower of London during Coutts London Jewellery Week.
Rockwife Textile Centre of Excellence, Leeds Road www.rockwife.com Once upon a time there was a Gypsy who toured the world and lovingly looked after the spangles, feathers and leather trousers of a variety of troubadours, actors and ne’er-dowells. One day our Gypsy met her Prince and as is always the way in Rock & Roll tales disappeared to live in a country pile and contemplate Eastern forms of spiritualism. One day a Sun-salutation too many tipped her over the edge. “Dear God, this is tedious,” she thought. “I need something that involves sequins and tulle immediately!” And so the Rockwife label was born. Hats, accessories and frocks to die for . . . or at least make you want to waft around in dry ice and listen to Meatloaf!
Julie Ann Seaman makes brightly coloured acrylic objects including neck pieces, brooches and earrings. She works mainly on individual pieces and small editions, often made in vintage plastics and precious metals. Her studio at Radiant Works in Huddersfield is full of the things that influence her quirky and playful style - plastic childhood memorabilia, stamps, old games and books, and the occasional antique fairground game. “I like old bits of plastic and colourful things. My work is partly inspired by travel, and I like it to have a fun and witty feel. Working with acrylic means that I can achieve the bright colours I enjoy, and combine them with precious metals and stones to create very contemporary pieces.”
Hardy Punglia The Left Bank, 2nd floor, Byram Arcade Tel: 01484 422121 Hardy Punglia designs and makes his clothing at his shop, The Left Bank in Byram Arcade, where he has new creations every week. With an emphasis on clever cutting and tailoring and meticulous attention to detail, his garments have a strong couture feel. Work for Lucy Barnes in New York, and as a personal shopper in Harvey Nichols, have given him a true insight into what women want to wear. “I focus on creative pattern cutting, so my clothes are wearable with a twist. I also do a lot of one-offs for people, and limited editions.” Hardy is designing a range of day and office wear for women, and his future plans include a menswear range.

Juko Designs Textile Centre of Excellence, Leeds Road www.jukodesigns.co.uk Juko Designs is a collaboration between Samina Begum and Janet Toms. While on the Textile Craft Course at Huddersfield University they both discovered that their passion and strength lay with weaving fabrics. Based at the Textile Centre of Excellence they design and weave a range of fabrics which reflect their different cultural backgrounds and influences. By using end of line yarns each colour way is limited to a metre or two of fabric which ensures exclusivity. The fabrics are used for their collection of handbags, accessories and dresses.
Camilla Wells makes jewellery and a range of silver table and giftware in her studio at Radiant Works in Huddersfield. She uses heavy gauge non-tarnish silver, which often has the impression of fabrics or textured papers on one side. This is achieved by rolling the silver sheet through a mill under intense pressure with the material, leaving an imprint of the pattern. The tableware is inspired by Camilla’s passion for timeless, original design, and her belief that really good design effortlessly combines form and function, and should be used and enjoyed indefinitely. Her bracelets are available in two widths, 15mm or 30mm, with other widths available on request. They are available in silver and in 9ct or 18ct gold.

Meem Boutique, Byram Arcade Tel: 01484 450390 memoonahlatif@hotmail.com Memoonah Latif is the creative mind behind womenswear design label and boutique Meem. Within three months of graduation last year from Huddersfield University she launched her label, had a sell-out collection in Leeds’ prestigious Victoria Quarter, opened Meem Boutique and now stocks in independent boutiques across the country! This fast growing label has become a favourite of fashionistas across the north. Memoonah’s powerful silhouettes and body-contouring designs incorporate distorted tailoring, heavily draped fabrics and sharp pattern cutting which defy traditional dressmaking. This dynamic yet feminine label isn’t gonna stop there, it intends to set up a menswear label, a cheap and chic diffusion line and accessories and bags.

Alison Campbell www.ajc-ceramics.co.uk Tel: 07803 576116 As well as editing the Huddersfield Magazine, Alison Campbell is a designer and maker of ceramics and jewellery, with a workshop in Marsden. Her degree is in ceramics, and she has been learning jewellery-making skills at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham. Using silver, semi-precious stones and traditional techniques, Alison puts her personal design ethos into the pieces she makes. As with her ceramics, it is important to her that the finished pieces reflect the making process. “I like to leave the marks of the hammer when I have used it. I also love wrapping with fine wire to create links, or to hold stones in place.”
Leoncia Murphy Sasa Loves, 2nd floor, Byram Arcade www.sasaloves.com Leoncia Murphy established Sasa Loves in 2005, trading at fashion markets in Manchester & Sheffield, then moving on to music festivals including Glastonbury. Leoncia opened the first Sasa Loves boutique in Manchester in 2006, and two years later opened the second in her home town of Huddersfield. Leoncia’s signature style is floral prints, a range of natural, feminine cotton printed dresses and camisoles. She sources the fabrics from family businesses in India, Nepal and Thailand, and the garments are made in Nepal in a small family-run factory. “I have limited amounts of each print so customers know they have bought a very individual piece. I hope my customers will be reminded of undiscovered beaches, tropical hide-aways and watching the sunrise on carefree dreamy days.”

review Thai Sakon, on St John’s Road, is one of the town’s hidden gems in terms of eateries.
ORLANDO’S George Haigh was established some 40 years ago by three farming brothers, the main brother being George. Today it has matured into a fine high class butchers.
Virtual Huddersfield want to encourage real diners to review local places, and will help pay towards the cost of the meal. So if you would like to review a local restaurant and see your review published on the internet (and possibly in this magazine!), log onto virtualhuddersfield.com and register your interest.
We decided to commence with the Thai Sakon mixed starter for two. This was presented beautifully and consisted of chicken satay, Thai spring rolls, deep fried sweet corn in special batter, minced prawns on toast, Thai fish cakes, chicken breast strips and king prawns in tempura batter, served with three dipping sauces - sweet chilli, peanut, and onion and cucumber. For our main courses we selected Penang Gung (huge prawns in Penang curry with Thai green beans, coconut milk and kaffir lime leaves) and Pad Prik Sod (stir fried chicken with chilli, onions, mushrooms, peppers and spring onions). To accompany the main course we ordered sticky rice and egg fried rice. We were rather disappointed that there was no sticky rice available, but opted for an alternative of jasmine rice. Both dishes looked colourful, were well presented and tasted delicious. We accompanied the meal with a bottle of spring water served in unusual but lovely glasses with ice and lemon.

There was a separate dessert menu, but we were too full so we decided to give dessert a miss and order some more wine and retire to the lounge area to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Overall our impression of Thai Sakon was excellent. Contemporary in design but with a few far eastern touches, the restaurant created the perfect atmosphere for all diners, with plenty of space between tables.

An extensive menu divided into various sections gave us plenty of dishes to choose from, including a large section of vegetarian choices. It is also worth noting that you can request your choices to be made hotter or milder according to your own taste and the menu has a very good "heat" guide for diners.

We had booked our table for 8:45pm on a Saturday, but arrived slightly early and were delighted to be led into a fabulous lounge area, which enabled us to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine while perusing the menu.

All Georges’ knowledge has been passed down to the staff and butchers. We pride ourselves on very high quality live stock from local farms, beef, pork, lamb and poultry come direct from farm to butcher.
Professional and personal car hire service
Facilities such as the toilets were both clean and functional, which is always a bonus. On the downside the restaurant would be unsuitable for disabled people as it is downstairs with quite a few steps. The price of the meal for two of us was £38.40 and our drinks were £33.90 for two bottles of wine and a bottle of mineral water. We would recommend Thai Sakon to anyone and will definitely be going back again. Jean and Greg, Taylor Hill

This is how we work, ‘we don’t want to take on the world, just do our trade to the best of our ability’.
We had booked our table for 8:45pm on a Saturday, but arrived slightly early and were delighted to be led into a fabulous lounge area, which enabled us to sit and enjoy a bottle of wine while perusing the menu.

We provide a service of trimmed cuts of meat to a large selection of pubs and high class restaurants in the local areas. This provides us with a large buying power which means we can buy the best stock available in the local farms, which means we can pass the superb product through our shop.

For smaller kitchens, styles such as the French Country design create a feel of country living. Although this particular type of kitchen is well known for its elaborate style, a warm, chic atmosphere can be created regardless how big or small your kitchen may be. Natural materials can be used on walls and beamed ceilings, and can be rough stained or painted in natural colours. As the kitchen is the central focal point of the house bringing friends and family together, there is always an excuse to go the extra mile in terms of atmosphere and decor. Think of soul food and your imagination will do the rest. A well dressed and positioned kitchen table adds a great final touch to the perfect kitchen look. A room of one’s own This issue we profile Sylvia Shaw, a woman who should be an inspiration to us all! ylvia has just published a book of her own recipes, The Once A Week Cookbook, filled with tasty and nourishing dishes for people with busy lives.
S
Nearly 62 with four children, one of whom still lives at home, Sylvia came up with her system during her years working full time while bringing up the children. Huddersfield born and bred, Sylvia grew up in the town centre: “My home was where the bus station now is,” she says. “We were called ‘top-enders’ and the people who lived where the Sports Centre now is were called ‘bottom-enders’.” She now lives in Almondbury and has been a working mum for the last 10 years. Her husband died when their youngest son was six and she went to work full time when he moved up to high school.
“It’s not the only time I’ve been a working mum, though,” she points out. “We bought a café in Cornwall when our oldest children were five and seven, and I was a working mum indeed, in the café all day and with the family at night.” The café was also where she learned to cook in bulk. After five years, Sylvia’s husband wanted to go back to his old job as a rep, so they moved back up to Huddersfield. The cookery system evolved when she went out to full-time work, because she wanted to leave her son something he could easily microwave for himself when she wasn’t in. Robert Ashton www.massivepixels.com
“I wanted to make sure that he was having good, home-cooked food, but I didn’t want to be coming home every night and cooking it!” She started cooking in bulk. “I decided that if I was making a dish, it was as easy to make a dozen portions as one. Then I could freeze the rest in portions, meaning that it was ready whenever I needed it.” “And it’s not just pasta sauces, curries and chilli,” she points out. “I do the same with rice, pasta, mashed potato, even jacket potatoes - you just have to bake them, scrape out the middles, stuff them with various fillings and freeze them.” Sylvia says the key to the system is being organised. “After you have done the bulk cooking for a few weeks, you have a good stock and from there you just need to keep on top of it. When I notice that I’m down to the last couple of portions of something, I make sure that’s what I prepare that week!”

She says, reassuringly, that it doesn’t mean you have to spend a day a week cooking. “It probably takes one evening a week. You can mix and match things, and the longest cooking time for any of my recipes is three hours for the stew - and of course you only have to give it a stir every now and then so you aren’t tied to the stove for the whole time.”
SUMMER/AUTUMN 2008
And you don’t need catering-sized equipment either. “Yes, you do need a big pot for cooking things up in, but a normal fridge-freezer can cope easily.” Sylvia had been thinking for years of publishing a cookbook to share her system with others, and when her son got his driving license and she was no longer taxi-driver she decided that the time had come. “I started writing the book during my lunch hours at work. So I was working full-time, doing all that cooking and writing a book - it just goes to show that it’s possible to do it all!” Asked about the ‘room of her own’ - the place where she does her thinking and has her best ideas - Sylvia says that the obvious room would be the kitchen. After a bit of further thought, she decides. “Actually it is the kitchen. Specifically in front of a sink full of washing up - no one comes and bothers you there!” The Once A Week Cookbook is available from Trafford Publishing, or you can buy a signed copy direct from Sylvia on Friday 15 August at the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival, where she will also be doing a demonstration

More delights - of the mouthwatering kind await you at the far end of Westgate. Continue along Moor Bottom to Taylor’s foodstore on Meltham Road, renowned for its splendid array of fruit and vegetables including many rare varieties from around the world. As if that was not enough, it also offers a well-stocked delicatessen counter and bakery. If you like to get creative in the kitchen, this is definitely your kind of place with lots of inspiring ingredients, many of which would otherwise be hard to find. And when you need to burn off the calories, why not take in a little fresh air with a walk to Magdale Fields, a haven of wildlife near to
the River Holme nurtured over many years by the Honley Village Community Trust. Several local walks start from this point including the Holme Valley Riverside Way, which wends its way up through Thongsbridge and the centre of Holmfirth towards Holmbridge. Magdale Fields gives access to Stones Wood, an area of woodland adjoining it which is also managed by the Trust.
Getting to Honley could hardly be easier as well as the rail link mentioned earlier, there's free parking on the public car parks, run by Kirklees Council on Westgate and New Street. and regular buses to and from Huddersfield, Holmfirth and New Mill

The area surrounding the new-look Westgate is steeped in heritage with cobbled lanes and terraces of weavers’ cottages serving as a reminder of the area’s industrial past. Church Street was the home of the local wool exchange where the precious commodity was bought and sold. Present day Honley is home to many longestablished retailers and service industries, as well as more recent arrivals and smallscale businesses. A quick search of the A-Z business directory on the Honley Village Community Trust website revealed an impressive array of butchers, bakers, beauty clinics, books and bridalwear specialists, builders and building societies, all based within the bounds of Honley - and they are just the categories beginning with the letter B! Within easy walking distance you will also find specialists in home improvements, hair and beauty, flowers and furniture, art and antiques, everything from jewellers to joiners, carpet dealers to complementary therapists. Creative and artistic talents are showcased at the highly regarded Lupton Square Gallery and Holme Valley Warehouse, both of which were fringe exhibition venues during the recent Holmfirth Artweek. The gallery is located in a beautifully renovated 18th century house which offers a friendly, informal setting for viewing a wide range of original, quality works of art. The ‘warehouse’ is spread over two floors of a former Co-op building at 11 Westgate, specialising in restored furniture from old pine to oak with all kinds of quirky pieces for the home and garden, with lots of local art displayed in and among. > 32

Magdale Fields gives access to Stones Wood, an area of woodland adjoining it which is also managed by the Trust.

uddersfield and its surrounding area is exceptionally fortunate to be home to a plethora of nationally respected creative talents, in a vast array of disciplines: jewellery, textiles, painting, sculpture, ceramics and furniture.
It’s also an opportunity to buy work direct from the artist, and to chat to them about their thoughts and inspiration for your chosen piece of work. You could also commission a special piece to be made exclusively for you.
HOST - now in its fifth year - provides a unique opportunity to visit the artists in their own studios and workshops. You can watch them at work, see what inspires them, perhaps have a go yourself . . . and get inspired!
Fifty artists in 22 studios will be opening their doors for two weekends at the end of September. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to explore their private and personal spaces of spontaneity, innovation and deliberation

Food & Drink Festival Huddersfield’s ever-popular Food & Drink Festival is nearly here, and we can’t wait!
T
his year, the festival is moving into the centre of town. New Street and the Piazza Centre will both play host to marquees selling food and drink to sample and to buy. Stallholders come from both the local area and the wider region. Make sure you visit the Cookery Demonstration Theatre to check out some top culinary tips from local chefs . . . then head for the stalls to get the ingredients to do it yourself at home. Or if you prefer, watch the chef then visit their own stall to sample the food for yourself.
And of course, there’s the fun side too. Two cookery competitions will lighten things up: two Huddersfield Giants will engage in a different kind of contest, to see who’s got the best skills in the kitchen, and Real Radio breakfast show presenters Daryl Denham and Gayle Lofthouse will enjoy plenty of banter while cooking up a storm. The kids won’t be left out, with the Real Radio patrol painting faces, Kirklees Museums offering the chance to play with Victorian toys and have a look at historical kitchen items, and Bee Walks giving an insight into the humble bee and what it does for us. >
With stalls open from 10:00am until 6:00pm (11:00am to 5:00pm on Sunday), there’s plenty of time to browse, sample, decide and buy. Come down for lunch, and pick up something for your dinner at the same time. The festival is organised by the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership, who also bring you this magazine, and are proud to invite you to the eighth Huddersfield Food & Drink Festival. Ring 01484 487933 or visit our website, www.foodanddrinkfestival.co.uk for complete and up to date information about the festival. See you there!
