e’re delighted to bring you the new issue of the Huddersfield Magazine, which will be my last as Editor.

I’ve been working with the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership since before it was called that - more than 11 years. The first issue of the magazine appeared in 2000, and came out once a year for five years.

We then went into partnership with the Examiner to produce a quarterly, high quality glossy lifestyle magazine. And I like to think we’ve succeeded in our ambitions certainly feedback from you, our readers, tells us that you like what you see.

All good things must come to an end, however, and I’m moving on from the magazine, though not from Huddersfield. I came to the town by chance in 1995 and fell in love with it.

I like the manageable size, the beautiful surroundings, the beautiful buildings actually in the town centre. People are friendly, there are great shops, restaurants and bars, and there’s always something going on - often due to the efforts of the HTCPL! Anyway, I’m glad to say that this issue is a cracker - packed with great pictures, lots of useful info and plenty of encouragement to get you to come into town.

Spring is in the air, the days are getting longer and even sometimes warmer! We’ve been checking out the catwalks to bring you the gen on both women’s and men’s fashions.

Our nesting instinct must be kicking in with the warmer weather, as our Bargain to Binge and Independent Huddersfield pages both feature the home, and we’ve got the lowdown on creating hanging baskets too.

The only thing you need to know about fashion for spring and summer is colour.

Oh, and navy blue. And white.

Colour is almost uniformly strong, though last season’s camel is still filtering through - with bright accessories, of course.

And colour means stripes, florals, bright blocks, kaleidoscopic prints - or a combination of them all. Be bold and go for blocks or two or three contrasting colours, match a plain bright tee with a long striped skirt, or play with different tones of the same colour.

Bear in mind, though, for these looks to work you need to make sure styles are simple and plain.

Navy blue is the new black this season, but it’s not navy blue as we know it. Usually, Navy + Spring/Summer = Nautical, but not this time. If you want splashy big patterns but don’t fancy going bright, navy is your friend. It gives those big prints a very retro, very restrained vibe. And as block colour, it just looks plain sophisticated.

White is either crisp and clean, or virginal and ethereal. Either way, it’s pure white.

We are still seeing lots of lace, and crochet is coming in as an alternative way of creating a light feel. It’s also a great way to cover and tone down a neon bright while still looking totally on-trend. This style works best on tops or fitted abovethe-knee dresses and skirts. > Next

Look out for pleats, especially on floorsweeping skirts in floaty fabrics. And that brings us to the whole floor-sweeping thing. Maxi-dresses, long skirts and wide-legged trousers are channelling an updated 70s vibe.

Those of you with fantastic legs don’t have to worry that the fashion for length means hiding them away - lots of these dresses and skirts are slashed to the thigh. But they’re subtle - silky fabrics mean volume without weight, and gorgeous swishing and swirling.

The dresses particularly come in an enormous range of patterns. Huge Chelsea Flower Show florals, bright painterly blooms, animal prints (we don’t see this trend going away any time soon), intense abstracts and vivid geometrics.

And, of course, stripes.

We can’t remember when we last saw so many stripes ... and think horizontal rather than vertical.

Dungarees and jumpsuits also tap into the current 70s revival (we have to say that the popularity of the jumpsuit comes as a bit of a surprise to us, but that may have something to do with being aboveaverage height and finding it a challenge to get one that fits!).

Trousers come in a myriad of styles, but two main ones stand out. Seventiesinfluenced high-waisted and wide-legged are a key element of the floor-sweeping fashion, and there’s a more casual version, slouching from the hips. Or look for very crisp, very stylish tailored trousers, sharply cropped just above the ankle. (We refuse to even contemplate harem trousers - it didn’t work for MC Hammer in the 80s, and we don’t think it works on anyone else either.) >

Shoes also tap into the vogue for colour and come in three heights: high, higher, highest. Stacked platforms and wedges come in bright colours, although there’s also a strong trend for natural materials wood, leather, raffia, rope. There are also some fab stylish flats we particularly like them studded with glowing jewels.

And remember - if you’re nervous of colour, you don’t have to be extreme.

Just go for one piece or for accessories, and team with this season’s must-have neutrals: navy or crisp white. Who knows, one thing might lead to another, and you could just find yourself getting more and more daring.

Be brave - take the plunge into a world of colour!

Keep jewellery simple, but big. A statement necklace OR a jewelled cuff - not both. All this colour taking centre stage means accessories shouldn’t hog the limelight.

The only exception is rings - the more the merrier, and look for loads of bling. If you can afford the real thing, lucky you! - if not, there’s a treasure trove of great fakes out there.

Money Saving Tips:

Get hitched on a shoestring Want to get married but worried about the cost?

Think you can’t get hitched until you’ve saved up for (at least) ten years?

Fear not! There really can be a great wedding for every budget.

Remember - you will be marrying the person of your dreams, and that’s what counts. All else is just frills and trimming.

Here’s what a local bride has to say on the subject:

First you need to decide which aspect of the wedding is most important to you both and make sure that part is as good as you can afford. For the rest, there are many ways to cut corners or simply miss them out.

First of all, prioritise. A list could look like this: dress, rings, photographer, venue, food and wine, entertainment. And it’s vital to work out a realistic budget and stick to it.

People just want to see the bride and groom happy, and often the more simple the celebration, the better. Let your love shine through!

For my wedding do, I scrapped the posh cake, had one bridesmaid, shared the church flowers with the bride from the previous day and bought cheap shoes nobody saw under my dress - but we had a beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Shadow from Cartwright Cars and a top-notch reception with a ceilidh band and DJ. The best way to save money is to do it yourself or enlist friends and family. Most people know people with a wide range of skills, and almost all of them will be delighted to help out - perhaps as their wedding gift to you.

The venue will probably be the toughest decision. Forget pricey all-inclusive hotels with a bit of imagination and some helpers you can turn your local village hall into something truly special.

Is your aunty a dab hand with a sewing machine? Ask her to make your wedding dress. Or get your accessories made, such as bag, bolero, tiara, jewellery...

If aunty’s too busy, keep an eye out for endof-season wedding sales and fairs. Borrow a dress or get a second-hand one (have it altered to fit you perfectly). Vintage clothes are in - check out a quality dress agency or second-hand retailer.

(Warning: never accept a glass of wine when dress shopping! I was convinced spending £3,000 on a dress would make my husband cry for joy on the day. Sober, I realised he would have cried - but not for joy ...)

Create your own favours. Invite your friends round and make a night of it, putting them together. Or just don’t give them out, would anyone notice?

Flowers are important to a wedding but don’t need to cost the earth. Stick to blooms in season if possible.

Table decorations don’t need to be fancy either - make your own confetti to sprinkle on the tables, or use petals. Little candles are always romantic and you could hang up fairylights or homemade bunting for a magical feel.

I would say don’t skimp on a photographer.

If you’re spending money to make the day special, it’s important to have good photographs to remember it. But it’s also fun to hand out disposable cameras to your guests and collect them later for an ‘alternative’ view of the day!

All you need to do now is say - I do!

If yours is looking a bit tired and boring but you can’t afford a whole new kitchen, think of giving it a face lift with some new accessories.

The bright colours of the catwalk have spilled over into the home, with funky primary and neon colours on everything from utensils to electrical goods. Mix and match for a rainbow effect, or stick with one colour (we like red) if you don’t want to go OTT.

Money’s tight for pretty much everyone these days, and staying in is becoming the new going out - which may mean spending more time in the kitchen.

Retro is really strong at the moment, and this tends to lead to gentler pastels and pretty patterns. Florals range from full-blown roses to more abstract patterns of leaves and stems.

A third alternative is to go minimal with bright whites and glass. This will give your kitchen a cool professional look, which you may prefer to the more homely retro or trendy brights. And you can always add elements of those things as well.

You can spend a lot of money on things like toasters and mixers - and to be fair, they will probably last a long time. The Cook & Bakeware Company or House of Fraser are a good source of top brands.

Next and Marks & Spencer tend to be more mid-price, and if your budget is tight, places like Wilkinson or Matalan can provide you with the look without breaking the bank (and you may get tired of that bright yellow kettle anyway).

Our rule of thumb tends to be: if it’s on show on your work surfaces, make sure it looks good. If it’s vital like knives, make sure it IS good. But you really don’t need designer wooden spoons ...

For the Home We’ve been taking a stroll around town, hunting out all Huddersfield’s independent homewares shops - and there are a lot more than you might expect!

bviously our first stop was Thatchers Furnishings, which has been selling furniture, carpets, curtains and accessories in Huddersfield for over 70 years. If you want quality and excellent service, this Threadneedle Street store is definitely the place for you.

Pat’s Pine Furniture does exactly what it says on the tin (well, on the shop front ...). It sells a full range of furniture made of pine from its large premises at Beast Market, and offers a made to measure service as well.

Another store that does exactly what you would expect from the name is the Cook & Bakeware Company. This lovely shop on Westgate used to be called Strawberry Fair - it still belongs to the same people, but has changed its focus. This is your destination if you want stylish, high quality kitchen items. They also have a lovely range of gifts and cards (and an ace restaurant!).

Create 26 1st Floor, Byram Arcade

Create 26 is a shop occupied by four designers and the things they make! Pictures, cushions, lampshades and tea cosies in a range of styles - all hand-made - are all available here.

Pretty Little Things is full to bursting with ... well, pretty little (and not so little) things. Come here for vintage and retro accessories, as well as vintage furniture given a new lease of life by the owner. She will also reupholster your own furniture for you, at a very reasonable price. >

Home Suite Home on Market Street is another good source of furniture, as is the huge British Heart Foundation store just down the road (yes, we know they’re not independent, but they are a charity - and the store is massive).

If you head to the first floor of Byram Arcade, you will find three lovely shops selling all kinds of beautiful things. Shibusa Interiors not only sell wallpaper, pictures and fabulous decorative ‘stuff’, they are also interior designers.

Hanging Baskets With spring on its way, our thoughts have turned to brightening up our home, and we’ve decided to create a splash of colour with a hanging basket.

Since we’re not exactly renowned for our green fingers we decided to consult someone who knows about these things!

Paul Marshall and his team make up the hanging baskets for towns and villages throughout Kirklees. Here’s his expert advice: “There are several types of hanging basket available these days: traditional wire, plastic ranges, some with a saucer beneath to assist watering and those with a small built-in reservoir. Increasingly popular are wicker baskets with a polythene liner, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

To plant up a traditional wire basket, select the size best suited to your property. The larger the basket the better the plants will grow. A 14 inch basket is usually used for houses, 16 and 18 inch are for commercial use.

Select a liner to block the holes between the wire and stop plants and compost from falling through. There are various types available, but I prefer those made from recycled wool as they protect plants from hot sun and the cold, and the polythene liner stops excessive water loss.

Cut a circle of polythene about as large as a saucer and place in the bottom of the basket. Add several centimetres of hanging basket compost, then insert your first row of trailing plants around the outside of the basket, carefully passing the plants through so they can hang down.

Put another layer of compost over the first row and start to plant a second layer in the gaps between the plants in the previous row. Four plants in the first layer, around six in the second and ten in the third (if your basket is over 14 inches in diameter).

Fill to just below the top with compost then add plants in the top. Put something tall (such as a geranium or upright fuchsia) in the centre. Add a circle of bushy flowering plants like Busy Lizzies, then finish with an outer circle of trailing plants similar to the ones you put in the side.

Firm everything in leaving a slight depression in the centre, and hang the basket (or place on a bucket) in a sheltered place for a few days to allow the plants to establish.

Small baskets may need watering twice a day in hot weather, larger ones might last two days. Keep an eye on the weather - the hotter it is the more often you need to water! Feed at least weekly with a tomato fertilizer which encourages plants to flower.

To plant up reservoir and wicker baskets, just fill with compost and plant with plenty of trailing plants over the side.

These two types of basket will not need as much water as the wire ones.

Lovely plants in small pots are available from nurseries or garden centres from April onwards, at reasonable prices.

They will soon grow when transplanted, but most are not hardy and should only be put outside when the risk of frost has gone - usually early June.

There are no set designs for baskets but different colour combinations give different effects. Pastel pink, blue and silver looks ‘designer’, fiery orange, yellow and red gives red hot looks, while white, blue and silver look cool on hot sunny days.”

Well, that’s certainly inspired us to have a go! We’re heading to the garden centre to see what we fancy - a whole mix of bright colour is what appeals to us.

Real Ales Some people get all the good jobs!

We’ve been out trying real ales so you don’t have to (just joking).

‘What’s the difference?’ we hear you ask.

Basically, ‘real ale’ is cask conditioned while ‘keg’ beer is conditioned in the brewery.

Keg beer is filtered and pasteurised, producing a beer that is ready to drink and long-lasting - but these processes mean the beer loses much of its flavour. Also, the natural carbon dioxide is also removed, meaning the beer needs gas to serve it and keep it lively - which then adds a new (non-beer) flavour.

Real ale, on the other hand, undergoes a second fermentation in the cask. It needs care and attention both in transit and once it arrives at the pub, and, since it’s ‘live’, it will age and go off so it doesn’t keep as long as keg beer. However, it retains all the flavour of its ingredients, which are allowed to develop in the cask.

There are many different styles malty, lightly-hopped milds, pale hoppy bitters, malty reds, and dark porters and stouts. These beers are much stronger in taste than the mass-produced products, so can take a bit of getting used to. It’s definitely worth persevering, as there are so many that you’re bound to find at least one you like!

Huddersfield is known not just for the number of pubs serving real ales, but also for the number of microbreweries in the area. Some of them are housed in pubs and only available there, but most are available from other pubs as well.

We visited The Head of Steam, The King’s Head (both conveniently located at the railway station!) and The Sportsman, which is just around the corner on the other side of the viaduct. We would have gone to The Star (outside the ring road on Albert Street) but it was Monday and they were closed.

The range of tastes really was astonishing. Some of the bitters were just too ‘bitter’ for us (but our friend liked them), and one had such a lingering bitter finish (aftertaste) that we had to swap.

However, the darker beers were much more to our taste and it was certainly fun experimenting! Once you realise what type of beer you like, it’s pretty easy to choose - and most pubs will give you a taste if you aren’t sure.

All three of the pubs serve a great range of real ales, and we managed to try eight different ones (there were two of us and we were drinking halves, so please don’t tut at us!).

It would be a shame to live in a place with so much variety and never try anything, so we’d encourage you to have a go.

Just bear in mind that the flavours will be stronger than you may be used to - real ale for real flavour - but once you get used to them, you’ll never look back!

Only one was from a more mainstream brewery (Timothy Taylor Landlord) - the rest were from microbreweries in Huddersfield, Slaithwaite, Dewsbury, Greenfield and Hebden Bridge. There would have been more from Huddersfield, but The King’s Head had run out over the weekend ...

We found that The Sportsman had the most ‘local’ brews (it’s run by the people who brew at Anglo Dutch Brewery in Dewsbury), but there would normally have been more at The King’s Head. The Head of Steam didn’t have anything closer than Hebden Bridge, but they do normally have a beer or two from Summer Wine Brewery in Holmfirth.

The bill came to £44.25 for three, including six soft drinks (£37.00 for the food) - very reasonable, especially since we had added starters and sides without considering the bill.

Thirty-minute specials We are all busy these days, and it can sometimes feel like there just isn’t enough time in the day to cook a fresh meal.

So we’ve put our thinking caps on and come up with some delicious and quick recipes.

We all know that proper home-cooked is not only healthier, but tastes way better too.

Everyone should be able to find something they fancy among these recipes - actually, we like to hope you’ll want to try them all!

So step away from the supermarket readymeal aisle and go for fresh ingredients instead. Once you try it, you’ll find it really is as easy as it sounds.

SEARED CHICKEN WITH APRICOT SAUCE AND COUSCOUS Serves 4 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 35g/4 tbsp plain white flour 180ml/6 fl oz cup dry white wine 4 fresh apricots (you can substitute half a dozen dried) 1 medium shallot 30ml/2 tbsp apricot preserve 10ml/2 tsp fresh tarragon (1/2 tsp dried) Vegetable oil 200g/7 oz couscous 450ml/1 pt chicken stock (cube is fine) Small knob of butter Salt and freshly ground pepper

ASIAN SALISBURY STEAKS WITH SAUTEED WATERCRESS AND NEW POTATOES

1. Trim the chicken breasts, removing the white tendons. Put them between 2 pieces of cling film and pound with a meat mallet (or rolling pin) until about 1/2 in thick.

2. Pit and chop the apricots, finely mince the shallot and tear or roughly chop the tarragon if using fresh.

3. Lightly season the chicken with salt and pepper, then, using a shallow dish, dredge the chicken in the flour.

4. Heat around 30ml/2 tbsp of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken for 3-5 minutes per side, until it is browned and no longer pink in the middle. If you need to do this in more than one batch, add an extra 15ml/1 tbsp of oil each time. Transfer to a plate, cover and keep warm.

5. Take the pan off the heat, and add the wine and shallot. Return to medium heat and cook for about 3 minutes until slightly reduced, scraping up any brown bits. Add the apricots and cook for a few minutes until the fruit starts to break down. Stir in the preserve and tarragon, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Return the chicken to the pan and cook until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes.

7. Meanwhile, boil the stock, take it off the heat and add the couscous. Leave, covered, for 10 minutes, then fluff up with a fork and stir in the butter.

8. Put the couscous onto warmed plates, and top with the chicken and sauce.

Salisbury steak is a North American dish using minced beef and other ingredients, which is then shaped to resemble a steak.

Serves 4 450g/1lb lean beef mince 1 red pepper 1/2 bunch spring onions 60ml/4 tbsp plain dry breadcrumbs 60ml/4 tbsp hoisin sauce A half-thumb sized piece of fresh ginger 10ml/2 tsp vegetable oil, plus a little extra to grease the grill rack 4 bunches (2 bags) watercress 120ml/4 fl oz rice wine or dry sherry 1. Preheat the grill. Finely dice the red pepper, slice the spring onions thinly and mince the ginger.

2. Place the beef, red pepper, spring onions, breadcrumbs, ginger and half the hoisin sauce in a mixing bowl. Gently mix until just combined, then form into 4 oblong patties about 1/2 in thick.

3. Wipe the rack with a little oil and grill the ‘steaks’ for about 4 minutes a side or until cooked to your liking.

4. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Add the watercress and cook, stirring and turning over, for a few minutes until just wilted. Put the watercress onto warmed plates.

5. Turn the heat down a little to medium-high and replace the pan. Add the rice wine or sherry and the remaining half of the hoisin sauce. Stir constantly until smoothly blended and bubbling.

6. When it has reduced slightly (1-2 minutes) put the Salisbury steaks on top of the watercress and drizzle the sauce over. Serve with new potatoes.

SALMON PARCELS WITH RICE AND PEAS Serves 4 320g/11oz cherry tomatoes 2 red onions 30ml/2 tbsp olive oil 4 salmon fillets 5ml/1 tsp dried tarragon 200g/7oz rice (whatever type you prefer) 225g/1/2 lb frozen peas Salt and freshly ground pepper 1. Preheat oven to 200C (180C fan assisted), gas mark 6. Finely chop the onions and cut the cherry tomatoes in half.

2. Take four large squares of tin foil and rub each with a little oil. Place a salmon fillet on each, sprinkle the tarragon over and season lightly. Top with the cherry tomatoes and onion and pour a little more olive oil over the top.

3. Close up the tin foil to make small parcels, and bake in the oven for 20 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, cook the rice according to the pack instructions. When it’s cooked, stir in the peas and leave to stand for 5 minutes to allow the peas to cook in the heat of the rice.

5. Warm four plates, and layer the rice and peas, salmon, and cherry tomatoes and onions.

SHIITAKE, LEEK AND SESAME NOODLES Serves 4 450g/1 lb soba noodles (you can substitute spaghetti or any long pasta) 120ml/4 fl oz cup vegetable oil 340g/12 oz shiitake mushrooms 2 large or 3 medium leeks A thumb sized piece of fresh ginger 4 cloves garlic 150g/5 oz shelled edamame (you can substitute chick peas or frozen peas) 120ml/4 fl oz sake or dry sherry About 45ml/3 tbsp black sesame seeds or toasted sesame seeds 15ml/1 tbsp toasted sesame oil Salt and pepper 1. Slice the mushrooms thinly, rinse the leeks and cut into thin matchsticks, finely mince the ginger and garlic.

2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the noodles/pasta. When al dente, drain and reserve 120ml/4 fl oz of the cooking water.

3. Heat the oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes until browned. If using frozen peas, add them at this point.

4. Stir in the leeks and allow to soften for 2 minutes, then add the ginger and garlic and keep stirring for a further minute. Stir in the edamame (or chick peas) to heat through. Add the sake and season to taste with salt and pepper.

5. Add the noodles/pasta and reserved cooking water. When bubbling, add the sesame seeds and sesame oil, and toss together for one minute. Serve in warmed shallow bowls or pasta dishes.

FISH CURRY Quick and tasty fish curry using suatainable and inexpensive Coley or Pollock Serves 4 4 x Coley/Pollock potions (approx 180g each, skin on and scaled) Olive Oil 4 Spring Onions (finely sliced) 1/2 - 1 fresh chillies (finely sliced) 1 Lemon 200ml approx Coconut Milk for Korma or Framage Frais/Natural Yoghurt for Madras/Tandoori Approx 2 -3 heaped tbsp Curry Paste 1. Spread some of the paste over the fish and better left to marinade for a short while.

2. Heat a frying pan to a medium heat with a little olive oil.

3. Cook the fish skin side down to start and turn over for approximately for 8 – 10 mins in total.

4. Turn up the heat. Add half the onions and stir in the remaining paste, coconut milk (or yoghurt) and add chillies and coriander. Let this bubble for a couple of minutes, until the fish starts to flake.

5. Taste the sauce, and add a squeeze of lemon juice if required.

6. Pour into a dish to serve and cover with remaining onions and chopped coriander.

Meltham and netherton Past and present, ancient and modern are interwoven in the rich tapestry of village life which runs throughout Meltham and Netherton.

A prime example was the arrival of modern supermarket shopping in the late ’90s, bringing new life to the old David Brown Tractors’ site. Meltham’s dedicated independent retailers, faced with stiff competition from the famous name store, stood their ground. Many of the old shop fronts dating from the late Victorian era were restored their former glory. The call to ‘shop local’ is centuries old.

Meltham was the birthplace of the first People’s Co-op which opened in Royds Road in 1826 - pre-dating the famous Rochdale Pioneers by some eighteen years. Present-day retailers have realised the importance of projecting the right image, as well as providing first class service, quality goods and great value for money.

Collecting collops on the day before Shrove Tuesday is a local custom from way back through the mists of time.

Collops were cuts or slices of meat to eat before the Lent fasting began, but in Meltham, Collop Monday became the day when shopkeepers give out sweets to local schoolchildren.

Another blast from the past is the Meltham Memories 1940s weekend this year’s celebration from 15-17 July will be the third. Last summer, hundreds of revellers joined in the fun which included period-themed dances and a children’s street party. Vintage vehicles from a 1930s tank transporter to a 1940s bus were out in force. Gala day in June has long been a highlight of the year. Last spring Meltham held its first scarecrow festival, inspired by successful events elsewhere in Yorkshire.

A wide range of sports can be enjoyed whether as a player or simply watching from football to rugby league, cricket to athletics. Meltham Golf Club offers a challenging heath/parkland 18-hole course with tree lined fairways, babbling brooks and lake features and tricky-to-read greens, set against the splendour of the Pennine hills. On Thursday 14 April, for instance, you can join a 1.5 miles, easy walk with the intriguing title The Rocks of Folly Dolly Falls, starting at 6.30pm. 10. Retrace your steps to the Kingsgate shopping centre entrance, and turn right into Cross Church Street heading towards the Parish Church. Turn left then right and go down Byram Street, noting the distinctive modernist façade of Neaversons (now a café).

7. On the opposite side of Queensgate you can see a number of late nineteenth century buildings which now form part of the University of Huddersfield. Turn left and left again into Queen Street, noting the contrast between these buildings and the newest, the Creative Arts Building.

8. The buildings on the right along Queen Street, now mainly offices, were originally town houses. Tokyo nightclub is housed in what was once the Court House, and the Lawrence Batley Theatre was originally the Wesleyan Chapel.

11. Continue along Byram Street, crossing Northumberland Street, to see the Open Market. The building is constructed of iron and glass and was beautifully restored in the last few years.

12. Returning to Northumberland Street, turn right past the Post Office and head back to St George’s Square and the railway station, where you can reward yourself with a pint of local brew from either of the two pubs situated in the station buildings.

4. Cross Market Place diagonally, passing the Market Cross which dates from 1671.

Head down Market Walk towards King Street, and note the late Victorian shopfront of Walker’s Jewellers - a reminder of what the town’s shops once looked like.

6. Turn left onto the Piazza and continue straight ahead towards the steps down to Queensgate. You pass the library and the entrances to Queensgate Market - both of which were listed in 2005. At the bottom of the steps, take a moment to look right at the amazing but often ignored sculpted ceramic panels.

3. Turn left into Westgate and head for Byram Arcade. The arcade has shops on three floors, and beautiful wrought ironwork, and is currently fully occupied. Most of the shops are independent, with a good mix of new designers, vintage and the quirky.

9. Turn right and walk down King Street, noticing the Yards off to the right. These will originally have been tightly packed houses and workshops, and have been sympathetically restored for modern use.

2. Bear half right and head towards the bus shelters and Railway Street, noticing the former Ramsden Estate Office, a much more elaborate building than those surrounding the square. A close examination of the decorative carvings will be rewarded by the sight of a naked man with his back turned!

“I love Paris in the Cole Porter wrote those words in 1953, but they still hold true for us today!

In fact, we love Paris any time (maybe not the summer so much - too hot, sticky and full of tourists ...) but what better time than spring to write about a visit to the City of Light?

Paris is ideal for a short break. It’s not far away by air or by train - we used Eurostar last time we went, and it took a mere 61/2 hours from Leeds to the Gare du Nord (and that’s allowing 11/2 in London in case of delays).

So our suggestion would be: don’t knock yourself out by trying to do too much in one visit ... go more often! You really must allow time to just sit at a café (or two ... or three) and watch the world go by.

Our top tip would be: unless you are going for several days, don’t bother with the Louvre. It’s absolutely massive, and needs at least one day (really two) to itself. Most people only go to see the Mona Lisa anyway, and there’s always a huge crowd in front of it, not to mention the barriers and bullet proof glass ...

Go instead to the Musée d’Orsay which is a manageable size and full of lovely Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings by artists including Cézanne (our favourite painter), Monet, Degas and Renoir. If you really must see an iconic painting, head for Whistler’s Mother!

Paris doesn’t just have big famous museums - it’s also home to some weird and wonderful ones as well (Sewer Museum anyone?). We particularly like the (not particularly weird) Musée de Cluny (full name Musée National du Moyen Age Thermes de Cluny) which is housed in the old Roman baths and the late 15th century Cluny Abbey.

We’d also recommend a visit to the Sainte Chapelle to see the most spectacular stained glass windows we’ve ever seen. You can get a joint ticket that includes the Conciergerie, where Marie Antoinette spent her last days.

Speaking of tickets, you do have to pay to go into galleries and museums in Paris, but passes are available. Alternatively, they all have one day a month when admission is free (not all the same day, unfortunately) but they can get pretty crowded!

Make sure you go to see Notre Dame Cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe, but we wouldn’t bother going to the top of either if we were on a short trip. When you’ve finished admiring the Arc de Triomphe stand for a while and admire the traffic whizzing around the étoile - a huge roundabout where 12 roads come together. If you watch for long enough, it does start to make sense! Whatever you do, don’t try to cross - use the underpasses. >

And of course, make sure you go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Yes, there will be queues but you can’t visit Paris without visiting its most famous structure (and, of course, getting the obligatory ‘me in front of the Eiffel Tower’ photo).

Other things to do: eat ice cream at Maison Berthillon on the Ile de la Cité, visit the flea markets (but keep a close eye on your belongings), stroll along the Canal St Martin, and relax in the Jardins de Luxembourg. Do some shopping - whether in the designer shops of the Faubourg StHonoré, the huge department stores of Boulevard Haussman or the trendy boutiques of the Marais.

You can (and should) walk everywhere in Paris, but our toppest top tip would be to get a day (or more) pass for the Batobus. It’s a boat that works like a bus, stopping at key locations along the Seine - or you can just stay on it for a round trip. We reckon it beats the bateaux mouches hands down!

If you’ve never been to Paris, go. And if you’ve gone before, we hope this will inspire you to go again.

The festival is building on its growing success, attracting A-list, best-selling and multi-award winning authors such as AL Kennedy, Anne Fine, David Peace, Melvin Burgess, David Nobbs and Huddersfield’s very own Simon Armitage.

Anne Fine and Simon Armitage, for example, are not only exceptional writers but also exceptionally gifted interpreters and performers of their own.This should be yet another wonderful Huddersfield Literature Festival.”

For kids, multi-million selling children’s author Anne Fine is coming at the weekend, and Paul Wilson will be running a workshop based on his graphic novel, The Enchanted Valley.

Huddersfield Town FC’s skipper Peter Clarke has great hopes for his club.

At the age of 29, Peter is a happy man: playing football professionally for a team which is going places and living nearby in his home town with his family.

When he is away from the pitch, Peter enjoys relaxing with his young family. He married Lisa two and a half years ago and they have a daughter, Sophie, who will celebrate her second birthday in March.

Born and bred in Southport, Peter’s first memory of playing football was when he began joining in with the team his godfather and father ran - he was about three at the time.

He said: “I loved it. Even from an early age, it was all I ever wanted to do and I gave it all I had.’

Young Peter was a Liverpool supporter, so it was ironic that he got signed up by archrivals Everton.

He recalled: “I played football on Sundays in the park with my mates and a scout had come down from Everton and invited me for a trial. So from the age of ten, I entered the Centre of Excellence and was training twice a week, with a game on a Sunday too.

“I loved every minute of it and would just fit my homework around it.”

“We spend a fair bit of time away for games, so it’s great to come home and switch off, playing with my little girl.”

He is keen to extol the virtues of his team mates and is sure that the club can make some headway this season.

Peter played for Everton for six years, then moved to Blackpool, and later Southend.

During his early career, he earned eight caps playing for England’s Under 21s.

“The best thing about being a footballer is that it is all I ever wanted to do,” he said.

“We have a good group of lads here, there’s always lots of banter and plenty of laughs.”

Although not from Yorkshire, Peter jumped at the chance to return to the north in 2009 and be able to live within commuting distance of his team’s base.

“I lived in Essex for three years and have some fond memories of my time there, and still have friends down there,” he said.

“At first it was tough living in a hotel room.

“When I came to the end of my contract, I spoke with other clubs. I met up with Huddersfield’s manager and chairman and decided that this was where I wanted to play my football, to be part of a successful team and a club on the up.

“It was also nice to be close to my family again. If you are happy in your personal life, it helps your performance on the pitch.”

Peter Clarke settled in so well, he was quickly appointed as Huddersfield’s club captain, and last season he also won the Player of the Year award.

He is already very fond of the town and loves travelling over to Huddersfield from Southport on a bright day and taking in the miles of stunning moorland scenery. Peter is also partial to a meal out at Da Sandro’s Restaurant.

“I feel attached to Huddersfield already, the people of the town are very warm, they are so positive and proud of their town, their football club and rugby team,” he said.

“I was thrilled to bits when they made me the player of the year, it’s nice to win personal accolades and awards. Hopefully that means the fans are happy with my playing.”

“We are fairly well placed in the league at the moment so if we can push on from here, and ultimately achieve what we all want which is promotion, we will be very happy.”

Peter and his team held their own against Arsenal in the recent FA Cup round, and although were unhappy in defeat, have become more confident as a result.

Peter added: “To play against one of the best teams in the country and in Europe, to run them so close and fall to one dubious goal, it was frustrating but we can take a lot of positives from it.

“If we can maintain a level of performance like that in the league, there’s no reason why we can’t go where we want to.”

Pleased tomeet... ...the HuddersfieldTown Centre Partnership Ltd Times are tough for town centres all over the country, but Huddersfield is actually doing better than most, certainly in our region. Here at the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership Ltd (HTCPL) we like to think that’s partly down to us!

You’ll be familiar with our work in producing this magazine, but we thought we’d take this opportunity to let you know what else we do.

Town Centre Management (TCM) started in 1995 with European funding, and reported to the TCM Steering Committee. This Steering Committee forged close links with the Huddersfield Business Association and the Marketing Huddersfield Partnership, and in 2000 the three groups merged to form the Huddersfield Town Centre Association (HTCA).

In 2006, the Association changed its status and became the HTCPL, a company limited by guarantee.

The Town Centre Management team is now employed by Kirklees Council, and works closely with the HTCPL. We spoke to Town Centre Manager Cathy Burger, who told us: “It’s statistically proven that ‘managed’ towns perform better than towns without any form of town centre management.

“We are incredibly lucky here in Huddersfield to have such a strong group of businesses to support us - the HTCPL currently has 169 members, which makes it the largest group of its kind in the north.”

The partnership between the HTCPL and Kirklees was recognised by the national Association of Town Centre Management, who awarded the HTCPL Partnership of the Year in 2007/08.

HTCPL Chair Steven Pollitt of Eaton Smith Solicitors explained: “One of The HTCPL’s main aims is to support and promote business in Huddersfield – and a lot of what we do relates back to this primary objective. We work to improve the viability and vitality of the town through co-ordinated management of commercial, retail and civic activities and responsibilities. If we continue to make the town more attractive we will encourage more visitors and this will mean increased opportunities for all our members.”

To achieve these aims, the HTCPL co-ordinates networking between town centre businesses of every kind, produces publications and organises events to draw residents and visitors into the town centre. We also liaise with Kirklees services, the police and community groups to ensure the town is ‘cleaner, greener, safer’ and thus more welcoming.

Jonathan Hardy, Centre Manager of Kingsgate and Vice-Chair of the HTCPL said: “Things are really hard for retail at the moment all over the UK. But the situation in Huddersfield is much better than in some other centres - and we know that the Huddersfield branches of many big name retailers are their best performing in the region. I really do think that’s down to the work of the HTCPL.” We’re doing our best to keep business in Huddersfield working during this recession make sure you do your bit too by using the town centre and local businesses!

Zero Emissions Cars Can motoring be kinder to the environment? Is there such thing as a zero emissions car?

There are low carbon and carbon neutral cars on the market - but few are being mass produced, so they are very much niche vehicles.

These include biodiesel cars, whose fuel is created from renewable sources such as rapeseed or sunflower oil. They are billed as being ‘carbon neutral’ because the carbon dioxide emitted during driving is counterbalanced by the absorption of CO2 by the plant during its growth.

Ethanol vehicles are run on grain alcohol which is normally produced from sugar cane.

These cars are also carbon neutral.

LPG cars are run on natural fuel made from propane and butane, which produces much less carbon dioxide than burning petrol. Most petrol cars can be converted to run on LPG, but not all petrol stations supply it.

Technology for futuristic fuel cell cars is still being developed and is still relatively expensive, making these vehicles less of an option.

Many manufacturers are pinning their hopes on electric cars. Trials are ongoing, many focussing on increasing the distance the vehicle can travel on one charge. Testers talk about ‘range anxiety’ which is made worse during freezing temperatures, when the possible range reduces dramatically.

The Government is investing in the infrastructure to create more electric charging points, which will reduce range anxiety and thus make electric cars more viable.

But electric cars are not 100% pollution free.

They are powered by the electricity grid supplied by power stations - coal, gas or even nuclear.

However, having no tailgate emissions is certainly beneficial to the urban environment. And according to Prof David MacKay in his book ‘Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air’, electric cars have an energy cost of four to five times less than the average petrol or diesel car. And with fuel prices continually on the rise, this could be a real incentive to make the change.

Nissan believe that the electric car will command 10% of the world motoring market within ten years, and are putting their money where their mouth is. From March 2011, the new Nissan Leaf, trumpeted as the first massproduced zero emissions car, will be available to the general public.

Toyota Prius

The most common type of eco-friendly car is still the hybrid - such as the Prius - which use normal fossil fuels on long runs and electricity for short stop-start journeys. While greener than normal cars, they are still far from being zero emissions.

Until now most electric cars have been twoseaters, favoured by city dwellers who don’t tend to go faster than 45mph on most journeys. The Leaf heralds a new generation of electric cars which have four seats, can go faster and with a longer battery charge.

The downside? The car will go on the market at the princely sum of £28,000. A government grant will be available to cover £5,000 of this extortionate amount, but it still puts green motoring out of reach of the average household.

For the time being, truly green cars are still pricey, but as the technology develops they are bound to become more affordable - their time is coming.

The vehicle has a range of 90 to 110 miles on fully charged lithium-ion batteries - which produce no local pollution - and can easily run at speeds up to 90mph. The batteries are generally fully rechargeable overnight, and it comes with an onboard computer for searching for nearby charging points.

It also looks cool and quirky, with headlights resembling frog’s eyes. And Nissan has recently signed a deal to produce the Leaf, and its batteries, in its Sunderland plant.

Supporting UK industry must surely be an attractive reason to buy one.

Coming up...

There’s plenty to look forward to in Huddersfield town centre in the coming months, and here’s just a taste.

Huddersfield’s creativity will be on show in shop windows during March in a new project called The Spirit of Huddersfield.

Inspired by the brilliant work of Kirklees student Paulina Rusilowicz in ‘A Portait of Huddersfield’ commissioned by Sharp Agency, this project will harness the talent of the young people of Kirklees College by showcasing their work around the town, turning empty shop windows into on-street art galleries.

The HTCPL, Sharp Agency and Kirklees College commissioned photography students to capture the ‘Spirit of Huddersfield’, with the best going on display. The first ‘galleries’ will be launched on 9 March in John William Street and Northumberland Street, and permission is being sought from landlords of other empty properties to extend the project.

We’re looking forward to images of Huddersfield’s landmarks - the Galpharm, the Town Hall, Castle Hill and more - as well as people and events. We think it’s a brilliant way of using empty shops, which can otherwise give a negative impression.

The ever-popular St Patrick’s Day Parade will start at the Irish Centre at 1:00pm on Sunday 13 March, before heading off around the town. Wear something green, grab a pint of Guinness and join in!

A Continental Market on New Street from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 May will bring a wide range of continental market stalls, including the very best of French charcuterie, French cheeses, a great variety of garlic and vegetables and a host of other delights to tempt the most discerning purses.
