from the
editor
Hello and a warm welcome to the Spring/Summer 2008 issue of your Huddersfield Magazine.
A
nd it really is a warm welcome, with the sun shining and beckoning me outdoors even as I write this!
We have a great issue for you this time (as usual, of course), with loads of features and plenty of interesting and useful information about what’s on through the summer. Our makeover features Margaret Fearnley, Kirklees councillor, ex-Mayor and keen worker for Rotary. She’s just in the midst of organising a fund-raising concert for the restoration of the parish church but took time out to try new looks. We decided it was about time to let you know what our town centre manager, Cathy Burger, gets up to - read all about it in our Room of One’s Own profile. With summer on its way, we thought we would let you know about all the fantastic events in and around town - from plant sales to festivals and concerts. Don’t miss our page on local art fairs too, and our regular diary of events.
Of course we have our usual fashion roundup, and this issue we have had a quick look at what’s in for men as well - a casual elegance seems to be the order of the day for everyone. Our restaurant review this issue features a gastro-pub for a change - have a look and see what Virtual Huddersfield’s reviewers thought of the Head of Steam. Being the social butterflies that we are, we have been for a night out at the Lawrence Batley Theatre and have a brief report for you. And, being the social butterflies that you are, you’ve been out and about and we have some photos of local events you’ve been attending on our social page. So sit back, grab a cool drink, and have a look through your fantastic Huddersfield Magazine!
Alison Campbell Editor
We also thought we’d have a quick look at what to wear to a wedding, for both brides and guests!

r time,
d the living is easy Primark
We love that song, and we love the coming summer season. Fingers crossed for some sunshine this year, so we can make the most of the fashions. ne of the key looks this season - in fact, it’s not just one of the key looks, it is the key look itself - is the feminine dress. Floaty floral tea-dresses just won’t go away, and they get more floaty and more floral in every incarnation.
O
Prom dress styles have come off the high school dance floor and into the mainstream. Get them in luxurious satin, or in multiple layers of sheer fabrics and lace, get them strapless, off the shoulder, one shoulder or asymmetric, and don’t forget to get them in vibrant colours or splashed with huge flowers.
Or wear them with shorts - even we are finally convinced. It has taken a while, but the short or the cropped trouser really do seem to have made it into standard work wear - you can’t walk down the street without seeing this smart look and it’s so much easier to wear than a tight and/or short skirt. >
Marks & Spencer
Layers of chiffon are absolutely everywhere, and not just in dresses. Watch out for pretty pussy-bow blouses and ruffled tops - but team them with tailored trousers or denim (jeans or skirts) to toughen them up. This ties in with the season’s split personality - a look that is very feminine and fluid, but also structured and tailored. Waistcoats are back big time, and often to be seen in denim, worn over pretty floaty dresses. Jackets are vital - wear them cropped and swinging or closely fitting, wear them over dresses or wide-legged and highwaisted trousers, especially wear them as part of an almost retro safari suit.

Trousers and skirts are both seeing flattering high-waisted styles inspired by the move towards sophisticated tailored outlines. Fabulous tulip-shaped skirts put the emphasis on a nipped-in waist and curvy hips for a sexy style, while wide-legged trousers create a true 50s look.
Whatever you’re wearing, don’t forget that embellishment is everything! Delicate beading and feather ornamentation, big buttons, elegant fabric flowers at waist, shoulder or neckline, ruffles and broderie anglaise - take your pick. Primark
And one last word. Get a black leather biker jacket and wear it with absolutely everything!

Oh, yes - one final final word: what about all those multi-coloured shoes out there? Hot or what!

Readers may well recognize this issue’s makeover, Margaret Fearnley. ot only has Margaret been a Kirklees councillor for the past eleven years, she was Mayor of Kirklees in 2005/06, so her photo has been in the paper on countless occasions!
N
Margaret is tireless in her work for others, and in addition to her work as a councillor is a keen member of the Huddersfield Rotary Club, which raises funds for good causes both in the local area and around the world. Her current project is a concert to raise money for the Huddersfield Parish Church restoration fund. When we meet to go round the shops and choose Margaret’s outfits, she has just returned from a trip to the Lake District to see the couple who will be playing.
‘They are simply fantastic,’ Before she says enthusiastically. ‘They come from Italy, but tour all over Europe with a programme of everything from classical to light opera. Francesco Attesti is a brilliant pianist and Annika Kaschenz just has an astonishing voice!’ ‘I was already looking forward to the concert, but now I can’t wait to bring such talent to Huddersfield,’ she adds. The concert takes place at the church at 7:15pm on Saturday 7 June, and tickets are available from Margaret or from the church (see page 13 for contact details). Margaret is confident in choosing formal and business wear for herself, and has a good sense of what colours and styles suit her. ‘Where I am unsure is in more casual styles,’ she says. ‘I envy friends who I see looking great in casual outfits, and would like to work on that.’ We decide to see what we can do to help. We go to see Laurence Bell at Jon Laurence International Hair Design, who recommends putting subtle, fine highlights in Margaret’s hair. ‘It will give warmth and movement, without looking obvious,’ he confirms. Laurence and assistant Heather Langstaff suggest a warm honey blonde and a copper tone, to shade in with an all-over colour to match Margaret’s own hair. Margaret has been letting her hair grow, to give us more to work with. She has thick, wavy hair, and Laurence wants to get rid of some of the weight to create a sleeker look. He goes for a graduated bob, very short at the back and lengthening towards the front. He also thins the sides which would otherwise give too much volume. Margaret’s new style can be worn as a traditional bob, with the hair framing the face, or tucked back behind her ears for a softer, easy look. Putting it behind one ear, perhaps with a hair accessory, would be a quick and simple way of creating a dressy feel. >

We go to Greta Bumstead and Stacey Hargreaves at Lenitive Plus in Peters for the makeup, using Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics. ‘They are much kinder on skin,’ Greta confirms. ‘They let the skin breathe, and they have medicinal properties and a natural spf.’ She adds proudly, ‘the range recently got 10/10 in a survey in Now Magazine’. She applies an amazing concealer, which covers blemishes and redness completely, and blends in virtually invisibly. She uses a powder foundation, explaining: ‘I find liquid foundation can be a bit heavy, especially on older skin.’ Blusher in a peach shade provides a subtle glow. Stacey chooses heather and moss tones for Margaret’s eyes. Soft heather goes under the lower lid and on the upper lid, after a pale shade is applied up to the eyebrow. Moss colour emphasises the outer corners, and a grey eyeliner pencil provides extra definition.

Black mascara dramatises Margaret’s pale eyelashes, and lipstick in a gleaming golden brown provides the finishing touch. We have once again asked HD1, the developers of St George’s Quarter, if we can use their warehouse for our photoshoot - but this time we have gone into the newly refurbished reception area. A stunning blend of modern high-tech with fantastic original architectural detail, the rooms provide a perfect backdrop. We start with our formal outfit (partly because it’s easier to take hair from dressy to casual than the other way round!). The dress from Monsoon has a pattern in fuchsia, peach and pale cream on a very dark brown background, and we emphasise the colours with a beautiful raspberry coloured pashmina. The pale gold jewelled sandals from Faith pick up on the cream, and the stunning jewellery from Noemi highlights the glamorous effect. The suit from Next is not a style that Margaret would have chosen, and she definitely would not have picked the top. ‘The pattern and the style of the neckline would never have caught my eye,’ she says. We think it suits her beautifully, and after she is persuaded to have a good look at herself in the mirror she agrees. The shoes from Pixie Boutique feature stronger shades of the colours of the top, and the big pearls from Wallis echo the grey of the suit. >
Magazine Sprng Sum 08 12/5/08 1:35 pm Page 13
Also from Pixie, we have chosen a gorgeous embellished cardigan from their new clothing range. We’ve matched it with a camisole from Wallis and a full black and white skirt from Principles in Beatties, for a retro but modern look. Grey heels from Pixie and some dainty jet-style jewellery from Principles and from 1928 in Beatties complete the look.
Left: Jacket, Shirt, Shoes - Kitten Heels Jeans - Next Necklace - Principles Bracelet, Ring - Goldmajor in House of Fraser
Offshoot always have lovely ‘smart casual’ styles, and we are fortunate that they have plenty of Margaret’s colours - in fact we could have dressed her entirely from their store! We have picked a turquoise top and shirt, and teamed them with linen trousers in a bronze shade. Shoes from Cinderella at Le Bonnet in fashionable mixed colours and textures work well with the trousers, and the long necklace and bracelets from Wallis are an exact match. We have found the perfect jeans at Next, and matched them with a quirky asymmetric white shirt and painted jacket from Kitten Heels. A funky, heavy necklace of flowers from Principles works with the bohemian feel of the outfit, and a pretty daisy bracelet and ring from Goldmajor in Beatties go well without being overpowering. We couldn’t resist the fab shoes from Kitten Heels, with their laced detail at the back. Our next outfit is probably Margaret’s least favourite, although we thought it looked great on her. Maybe it was just a bit too retro! The full-skirted dress from Principles, teamed with witty red polka-dot shoes from Office and white and red jewellery from Finesse and Buckingham in Beatties would make a great holiday evening outfit (we think, anyway). Last but not least, it’s back to Offshoot again. The lime green top and cardigan teamed with white linen trousers suit Margaret perfectly. Green wedges from the Shoe Room in Beatties and some lime green jewellery from Wallis accessorise the ideal casual outfit - something Margaret could wear on holiday or here at home. It’s been a busy session, and we are delighted that Margaret is pleased with (most of) our choices. ‘It’s been really helpful,’ she tells us. ‘I do have a much better idea of what I can look for, and feel much more confident about choosing casual styles.’ We are even happier when Margaret decides to buy two of the outfits we have chosen for her - it shows we really have got it right!

Real restaurant
review Virtual Huddersfield’s real restaurant reviewers recently visited the Head of Steam. Read on and find out what they thought.
“
We visited the Head of Steam in the railway station on a Saturday night, and parked for free at the station car park. The menu is reassuringly short, implying that everything is indeed cooked from scratch, and it features local produce wherever possible. We shared some nachos and they were superb - crispy and tasty. These had obviously been freshly assembled and blitzed under the grill for just long enough. Both our first choices of main course were unavailable, which could have been due to a busy lunch time (food is served from 11:30am to last orders at 8:30pm).
This is an edited version of the full review, which can be found at virtualhuddersfield.com. Virtual Huddersfield want to encourage real diners to review local places, and will help pay towards the cost of the meal. Just choose a restaurant, get the goahead from virtualhuddersfield.com, enjoy your meal, send in your review and claim £30!
My fish pie was excellent: chunks of fish in a dill sauce, with fresh mashed potato topping. My partner’s sirloin steak came cooked as requested (medium rare), and beautifully presented on the plate. We both chose fat chips, which were lovely. My pie was accompanied by baby vegetables cooked to perfection, while the steak came with fresh salad, fried mushrooms and home-made onion rings! The portions were just right - generous, but not too much. Having indulged in the nachos we felt too full for dessert, though they looked lovely.

Unfortunately, excellent food was let down somewhat by the service. We had to wait a long time to place our order, which was frustrating as there were bar staff around who presumably don’t serve in the restaurant. The waitress was very busy serving food in other areas of the pub as well as the restaurant area. She was friendly when she did take our order, and our food did come with no more delay than you expect when it’s freshly prepared.
SPRING/SUMMER 2008
The Head of Steam is a busy pub, and therefore quite noisy. Closing the door between the pub and the restaurant area might help - and might also help reduce the number of customers going through the room to and from the toilet. Speaking of toilets, the ladies’ was clean and my partner reported that the gents’ has been refurbished and was fine. Overall impression: it’s not somewhere for a romantic meal, or to ‘go out for dinner’. It’s a great place in the context of a night out, a day in town, or a trip. The food is very good, the service is good once it gets going, and the atmosphere is lively. The bill was just over £30 for one starter, two main courses, two glasses of wine and two pints of Guinness. Would we go back? Yes, but maybe not on a Bank Holiday Saturday night. A Night At The Theatre We recently spent a great night at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in town - it was our first visit after too long an absence!
W
e went to see a one-man show in the Cellar Theatre: The Naked Soul of Kirk Godless. Performer Tam Hinton used sock puppets (quite literally ‘naked’ sports socks over his hands), recorded sound, video, shadow techniques and his voice, face and body to portray the story of Kirk Godless, his downfall and (perhaps) redemption.
The Naked Soul of Kirk Godless
The performance was strong and funny, including ad libs that made it clear that it was constantly developing, changing and evolving according to audience response and the performer’s personality and mood. At the same time, the main theatre also had a popular performance on, so the atmosphere throughout the building was buzzing. After a preliminary drink in the welcoming Pianola Bar, we made our way downstairs. The Cellar space is very intimate, with flexible seating possibilities. No one in the audience was more than 10 feet away from the performer at any time, it was a very intense experience. Last time we went, it was to see a major production by a touring company in the main auditorium, and it’s great to have the choice of different venues and different types of performance. The LBT is a fantastic and flexible venue, and it’s wonderful to see it being used for such a range of shows - from tours by major professional companies through smaller experimental pieces, to performances by local theatre, musical and dance groups

Plastic Bag Free Have you heard the news? Huddersfield is aiming to go plastic bag-free ... as soon as possible!
K
irklees Council voted in December 2007 to work towards becoming a plastic bagfree authority - and when it happens, Huddersfield will be the biggest town in the country to have succeeded in this aim.
Many of the major supermarkets provide ‘bags for life’ for a small charge, and other options include organic cotton bags or fashionable straw or fabric bags of various shapes and sizes.
People in Kirklees use 115 million plastic bags a year and statistics show that each bag is used on average for around 12 minutes before being thrown away. The bags can then take hundreds of years to biodegrade - and many bags photodegrade instead, breaking down into tiny toxic pieces that contaminate the earth, its waterways and the food chain.
The plastic bag-free campaign was launched at the Farmers’ Market on Sunday 13 April, and included a stall run by textile students from the University, demonstrating how to make your own funky and functional reusable bag.
The campaign aims to encourage the people of Huddersfield and Kirklees to think twice about whether they actually need a bag, and to get into the habit of carrying and using their own shopping bags.

SPRING/SUMMER 2008
Many of the retailers in town are already offering and encouraging their customers to take up other options, from paper bags to reusable alternatives, and increasing numbers are taking the bold decision to charge for their plastic bags. So let’s all do our bit, and work to make Huddersfield the biggest plastic bag-free town in Britain!

We’ve had a quick look at trends in men’s fashion for you, and here’s the lowdown. here are some similarities with women’s styles (but not as much chiffon!) with tasteful tailoring providing a key theme.
T
Jackets dress up jeans and casual trousers, while at the same time suits are dressed down, with ties seeming to be on the way out at the moment. Open-necked shirts or t-shirts are often accessorised with a scarf. However, dressed-up suits are also very much in evidence, with formalwear making a real impact.
Shorts are dressed up as well as casual, although it’s unlikely that they will make much of an appearance as officewear - of course it depends on the office. Cardigans are still holding their own, whether worn over a shirt with trousers, or over a bright patterned t-shirt with jeans or shorts. Printed t-shirts provide a fun and funky accent, with most using retro logos and images from old films, television shows and products. The main mood that comes across in men’s fashion at the moment is relaxed and fun, in a very low-key way, a mood of quiet confidence

A room of one’s
In our regular profile, this issue we feature Huddersfield’s Town Centre Manager, Cathy Burger. e decided that it was about time that we introduced you to the woman who heads up the team responsible for bringing you, among other things, this very magazine!
W
And now seemed like a particularly good time to talk to her, since the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership, co-ordinated by Cathy and her team, have just won a major national award: The Association of Town Centre Management’s Partnership Of The Year. The ATCM has a membership of more than 500 town centre management teams around Britain, and the award indicates a recognition of the Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership’s hard work and dedication in developing cooperation between all the bodies with an interest in the town centre: the Council, businesses, the University, community groups and the public. Cathy says: ‘Our job is to promote Huddersfield as a great place to live, work and play. We try to make the town centre as attractive, safe and vibrant as we can, in a variety of ways.’ Cathy and her team help to coordinate the Huddersfield in Bloom and Green & Tidy Trader campaigns. They also work closely with the police and CCTV operators to keep the Retail Radio network running smoothly. A range of events through the year includes the Christmas Lights Switch On, the Plant Sales and, of course, the popular Food & Drink Festival.
Publications to help promote the town include not just this magazine, but a quarterly newsletter for the business community, the annual Definitive Guide to Huddersfield, and an annual guide to events in the town for Christmas. So how did Cathy, who grew up in South Africa, end up promoting Huddersfield? Cathy was born in the UK, but grew up and went to school in Malawi and South Africa. She took a Bachelor of Commerce degree, worked for a couple of years, then took a year off and toured Europe. After some years working mainly in accounts, Cathy wanted a change. She made a move into financial software, going out and discussing clients’ requirements which then got built into software that she would test, sell and support. Eventually, she and a business partner bought the company. ‘I think my background in business stands me in good stead in this job,’ she says. ‘It gives me an awareness not only of what businesses need to help them along, but also of how they are likely to feel about particular issues, and how they may respond.’ ‘I would like to think that this gives me extra credibility with the businesses in Huddersfield town centre.’ Married with two children, Cathy also has an awareness of family needs. ‘I know how hard it can be to keep kids amused when you come into town,’ she confirms. ‘One of the things we try to do, whether ourselves, or in partnership with others, is to have ‘extras’ - added attractions and entertainment for families, to help make parents’ lives easier.’ ‘And it’s not just for kids,’ she adds. ‘Adults quite like it when there’s something a bit different going on. Something to do or to watch, that makes a bit of a break from the routine.’

Cathy and her family ended up in the Huddersfield area when they emigrated from South Africa ten years ago, because her husband got a job in the region. ‘We just got lucky,’ she says with a laugh. ‘It’s such a vibrant region, with some of the UK’s most booming cities nearby, and with Huddersfield itself being such a strong and lively place.’ ‘And the countryside is so beautiful. That’s what surprised me most when we arrived here.’ Cathy loves running, and walking her two dogs. ‘I suppose I would say that my ‘room of my own’ would be the time I am out in the hills, when I have the time and mental space to think,’ she says. ‘I’m normally so busy either going to meetings, dealing with paperwork or organising my family that I don’t have a spare minute to think! When I get out of the house I can free up my mind, have ideas, work them through.’ So, many congratulations to Cathy and her team, and keep up the good work!

What to Wear to a Wedding Whether it’s yours or someone else’s!
Y
es, it’s that time of year, and pretty much everyone’s thoughts are turning to this summer’s weddings. Although if you’re the bride, it’s more than likely that you haven’t been thinking of anything else for what feels like a lifetime! If you are the bride, you may well be thinking now of what to wear next summer . . . or even the summer after. Don’t forget to play to your strengths, and not try to be someone you aren’t - everyone looks their best when they are feeling relaxed and confident in what they are wearing.
Principles
Remember that you will be looking at your photos in 20, 30, or 40 years’ time (we hope!) and nothing dates faster than extreme fashion. The natural look is coming back in, and a classic look is never out of date. We keep hearing about the cost of the ‘average’ wedding, and it seems to be somewhere over £15,000. However much it is, though, it doesn’t mean that you have to spend that much - or that little, depending on your point of view! Remember that the word ‘wedding’ usually doubles the cost of any given item. There are some extremely pretty dresses in the shops that would make lovely wedding dresses at a fraction of the cost. >

The men in the occasion can hire their outfits, and that goes for guests too if it’s a particularly formal affair (Moss, Carl Stuart, Greenwoods and Burtons are all places to have a look at in Huddersfield). If the bridesmaids’ dresses are significantly ‘bridesmaidy’, they might want to consider hiring them, too. In fact, you can even hire the bride’s dress if you want! Pronuptia and the wedding dress concession in Beatties are specialists, and new shop Mysterium in Standard House supply every type of tiara you could possibly imagine! And don’t forget that Cinderella at Le Bonnet have a good range of dressy shoes and accessories, and of course offer a hat hire service.
BhS
The main thing to remember if you are a guest is not to try to outshine the bride - even Liz Hurley and Victoria Beckham can’t get away with that! Don’t wear all white (bride’s prerogative), don’t wear all black (too funereal) and don’t wear all red (not sure why, maybe it looks too scarlet woman). Whatever you wear, cross your fingers for sunshine and have a fabulous day!

Dearne Valley All aboard for a whistle stop tour of the valley where Little meets Large - and we’re not referring here to the comedy double act who had their heyday on Saturday night TV in the early 80s. Echoes of the past are all around as you explore the Dearne Valley, but from centuries rather than mere decades ago.

here are unmissable landmarks of epic proportions, of which more later, but small is most definitely beautiful for one of the popular tourist attractions. Venture out towards Wakefield on the A636 and you’ll find yourself in Clayton West, home of Hawk, Owl, Fox and Badger - Yorkshire’s great little steam trains on the Kirklees Light Railway. Ideal for families with young children, the return trip along the line takes 50 minutes and covers just under four miles of 15" narrow gauge railway. Special events during the summer include the ever-popular Days Out With Thomas on selected dates from late May. Other dates for your diary include the Teddy Bear's Picnic - June 28-29 and a gala weekend - September 13-14. For more information phone 01484 865727 or go online at www.kirkleeslightrailway.com Travelling by train, of the modern, full-size variety is also part of a much bigger picture. >

Denby Dale is a mere 24 minutes from Huddersfield by rail. The Penistone Line which runs through to Barnsley and Sheffield has been one of the district’s greatest success stories of recent years. After years of decline, passenger numbers are booming, thanks in no small measure to a dedicated band of local supporters who formed the Penistone Line Partnership to encourage more people on to local trains not just to travel to work but also for shopping trips into town, pub outings and other leisure time journeys. Regular guided walks are arranged around train times and stations. Passengers can also enjoy live music and liquid refreshment on the regular folk, jazz and blues trains. Forthcoming events on Monday evenings include June 2 - Gumption, music of the 60s, 70s and 80s; July 7 - US Independence Day theme; August 4 Yorkshire Day/Swiss National Day theme. Latest information: phone 01226 761782 or e-mail info@penline.co.uk Driving through Denby Dale, you cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer vastness of the magnificent railway viaduct above the village. Its greatest claim to fame also comes in extra large portions. Many still savour memories of the record-breaking Millennium Pie served up in September 2000 - a massive 12 metres in length and weighing 12 tonnes. The proud tradition began way back in 1788 when villagers decided to bake a pie to celebrate the return to health of King George III. Similar events have taken place at irregular intervals ever since. Locally made meat and potato pies of a more conventional size produced by the Denby Dale Pie Company are widely available in supermarkets throughout Yorkshire and beyond. The makers insist on using only the best ingredients, slow cooked to achieve a real home made taste, with no artificial additives and preservatives. Another big attraction for locals and visitors to the Dearne Valley are the thriving mill shops Nortonthorpe Mills in Scissett and Springfield Mill in the heart of Denby Dale. Here little and large go hand in hand with an array of small businesses and specialist traders bringing new life to grand old buildings Nortonthorpe’s central building is home to Violet - one of the very few ‘in situ’ mill engines in Yorkshire. Violet is steamed on a regular basis - to find out when the next one is due, contact Steve Buckley on 01484 863545 (evenings). Springfield Mill recovered from last summer’s floods thanks to the never-say-die Dunkirk spirit of the traders who ensured the the centre was open again within days. Units are available for new or expanding retailers, especially those selling ladies & gents fashion, general hardware or specialising in gifts for men. All enquires welcome, the rents are reasonable and there are no long term leases which are often a barrier to small and recent start-up businesses. Speak to Mrs Kaye 01484 866051 or e-mail office@springfield-mills.co.uk
Above: Skelmanthorpe
Over the years newcomers to Scissett have been intrigued by the unusual name – which has nothing to do with scissors! Scissett is derived from the old English ‘Scissa’ a variation of Celia. The ‘set’ tagged on at the end meant farm. Scissa’s set or farmstead is believed to have been near a group of old cottages at Carter’s Fold on the edge of the ancient manor of Skelmanthorpe. One of the village’s best known landmarks is Bagden Hall, a beautiful old house set in 40 acres of secluded parkland, now well established as a hotel and wedding venue. It is also home to a lovingly tended nine-hole golf course. Turn left off the main Wakefield Road along Busker Lane and Skelmanthorpe soon beckons. Commercial Road has long been the hub of village life with a mix of shops and services branching off along several side streets. It retains an important role in grassroots local government as the meeting place of Denby Dale Parish Council

yram Arcade is a splendid Victorian building built in 1880/81 by the architect W H Atkinson. It was acquired by the former Huddersfield Corporation in 1920 and refurbished by Kirklees Council over a period of several years. The refurbishment included reglazing the roof and improving the appearance by installing period lighting and repainting most of the units in colours more in keeping with the age of the arcade. Finally a passenger lift was installed to enable the upper floors to the accessed by members of the public and to improve access for the disabled. The arcade is open between the hours of 8.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. The arcade is home to over 60 shops, offices and restaurants providing customers with a wide range and variety of goods including specialist clothing, music, arts and crafts, jewellery, hairdressing, beauty treatments, and a wide range of foodstuffs and cafes. There is also a nightclub in the basement and a number of training and council services occupying offices above and behind the main shopping arcade. The arcade continues to move with the times as businesses forge ahead and continually improve their facilities and range of goods. At the present time a limited number of office units are available and businesses which would be complimentary to existing occupiers would be welcomed. Full details are available from Design & Property Service, Kirkgate Buildings, Byram Street, Huddersfield. Tel: 01484 226140. >

Party in the Park on Sunday boasts a The Guillem great line-up of ots chart acts and local bands. Headliners The Guillemots will perform songs from their top ten album ‘Red’ and are supported by indie rock band Elliot Minor. There will be music in the park from mid-afternoon, the main acts start at 6:00pm. The Kirklees Multicultural Weekend takes place from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 July. It starts on Friday night at Huddersfield Town Hall with the Queen’s Show, a competition to decide who will lead the carnival procession on Saturday from the town hall through the town and up to Greenhead Park. After a day of Caribbean dance, music and food in the Park, the party continues at the Hudawi Centre in the evening. Sunday will see the largest group of Dhol drummers ever to gather in Yorkshire, along with Bhangra music, Indian dance, New Orleans jazz and an Irish ceilidh, plus workshops in a range of skills, and plenty to eat and drink.
New this year, a family Festival of Fun will take place at the Open Market on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 August. Come along and enjoy the rodeo bull, lots of children’s rides, face painting and more. And finally, the ever-popular Food & Drink Festival will be held from Thursday 14 to Sunday 17 August. This year sees a new location, with stalls filling New Street and the Piazza. All your favourite stalls will be there and of course the Cookery Demonstration Theatre and children’s entertainers will make sure there’s never a dull moment. Full details in our next issue! Make sure you don’t miss out, come along and enjoy all the entertainment filling our town centre this summer
As usual, the Piazza’s Summer Festival will provide plenty of family entertainment, this year with a sci-fi theme. The Grand Opening on Thursday 24 July will include Star Wars characters and fancy dress, and the Festival finishes with the popular Punch & Judy Extravaganza on Saturday 9 August.

olmfirth artWEEK has been going since 1967, raising thousands of pounds every year for MacMillan Cancer Support. The main exhibition in Holmfirth Civic Hall runs for the week from Sunday 6 to Saturday 12 July. It’s open from 10:00am until 10:00pm every day (except the 6th and 12th, when it closes at 5:00pm).

The £2.00 ticket (£1.00 concessions) lets you visit as many times as you like during the week - and it’s well worth making a few trips, as there is work by about 400 artists arranged over two floors, a whole third floor dedicated to a selected artist, and the market on the stage where work can be bought and taken away on the spot!
Peter Hinchliffe, Icon Design by kind permission of the artist
Run completely by volunteers, artWEEK is a local event with a national reputation. The artists - both amateur and professional - are mainly from our region, but visitors come from all over the country. Prices start at £15.00 and go up into the thousands. If you can’t wait until July (and even if you are planning to visit artWEEK) don’t miss your chance to see and buy art - and meet many of the artists - at the sixth annual Ripple Art Fair in Marsden. Held over four days at spring bank holiday weekend - Saturday 24 to Tuesday 27 May - the fair features more than 25 artists exhibiting and selling paintings, prints, photography, collage, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, glass and jewellery at a range of prices. This year will also see two new ventures: Ripple Mail Art, showing postcard portrait artwork from around the world: and Ripple Cinema, showcasing films from India, France, USA, Canada and England (noon and 2:00pm every day, admission £1.00).>
