Unkindest cuts of all

CUTTING corners is a potentially dangerous practice whatever home improvements or repairs you need to arrange. When it comes to electrical work, many homeowners are taking a huge risk by not checking that the person doing the job is a qualified and registered electrician. A survey by the Electrical Safety Council revealed that of the 39 per cent of consumers who had had work carried out, less than half had received a certificate confirming that it had been completed satisfactorily. More than 50 per cent of those questioned were unaware that there was any kind of regulation relating to common electrical jobs around the home, such as fitting a new power shower, adding new sockets or installing garden lights. The ESC is encouraging householders to make their homes safer by installing RCDs residual current devices - which instantaneously cut off the current when there is an electrical malfunction. They are potential life-savers especially when using mowersand hedge trimmers

The hard work lurking beneath the surface GARDEN ponds and water features will need topping up and tidying over the next month or so.

Experts at the Royal Horticultural Society advise using a spray attachment on the hose pipe which will aerate the water and provide a healthier environment for the fish. Clearing debris lurking in the depths of the pond will reduce weed growth, improve the water quality and prevent the release of toxins that could harm fish or wildlife. Dead foliage and blooms should be removed from waterlilies and other aquatic plants. It is also a good idea to cut back any marginal plants that are getting out of hand and to skim blanket and floating weeds. Fitting nets or safety grilles over a pond is an essential safety precaution in gardens where young children play, and will also prevent leaf-fall in the pond. In the event of a heatwave, when sultry temperatures are forecast overnight,

water features should be left on, as oxygen levels will be lower. A dry spell is ideal for catching up on painting and preserving jobs. Sheds, fences and garden furniture will all benefit from a fresh summer coat. Newly planted trees and shrubs often need much more water than we might expect, so keep

checking on them and don't let them dry out.Plants in baskets can be cut back before feeding, which can encourage new growth and help revive any displays which are starting to look tired. You can also take cuttings of patio and container plants for next year. The RHS recommends that most perennial weeds are best dealt with in the summer, while they are in active growth. Digging out often works, but applying a weedkiller can be more practical, particularly for large areas. Lawns should be mown regularly. In hot weather, set the mower at a slightly higher level than normal. July is usually the latest time to apply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser, especially if a spring feed was not given. A soluble feed and weed product may be useful if there are weeds present in the lawn. Don’t worry unduly about brown patches on the lawn - they will recover quickly when the autumn rains arrive.
