25-year celebrations for Kirkwood Hospice
K
IRKWOOD Hospice will celebrate its 25th anniversary in March.
Opened in 1987, it has served the people of Kirklees admirably from its premises in Albany Road, Dalton, and remains a highly regarded healthcare provider. Now however, it is entering a new phase with a £3m refurbishment of the 16-bed inpatient area. This will mean that in June, the whole inpatient unit will move to a temporary home in Ward 11 at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. As well as the current patients, all staff and facilities will move together to maintain the same high standard of care. Beds, furniture and even meals will be transported from Dalton to the unit’s temporary home in Lindley. But patients and their families can be reassured that the same high standards of care will be maintained. Day patients will remain unaffected and day-to-day palliative and family care will carry on as normal. Garry Wilkinson, the hospice’s director of fundraising and marketing said: “The only part of the hospice affected by the refurbishment is the inpatient unit, which will move as a complete unit to HRI. Everything else and all other departments will remain at the hospice. “Patients who face a move to HRI need not worry as the whole ethos of Kirkwood Hospice will be transported to Lindley with the same standards of care and nursing staff.’’ Work will start on the hospice refurbishment in June and although there will be no more bed spaces available, it will mean that more patients will have single rooms, en-suite facilities and space for their families. “Several new family lounges and private rooms will be created so that patients can spend quality time with their family members coming to visit, and of course we will have our lovely garden, although it will be slightly smaller,’’ added Garry. When the idea of creating a hospice for the Kirklees area was first suggested, it was at a time when hospices were few and far between. At that time many people had not even heard about the work of a hospice so in this area Kirkwood Hospice was trailblazing in the field of care for the terminally ill. The idea was first mooted in 1981 when fund raising appeals were launched in both Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Planning permission for the hospice was granted in 1984 and the foundation stone was laid in 1986. After a public competition to choose the name, Kirkwood Hospice opened on

Garry Wilkinson, director of fundraising and marketing, is pictured (inset) March 18, 1987. It has gone on to help thousands of people and their families come to terms with terminal illness. Since it opened, a network of hospice shops has opened across Kirklees and fund raising continues apace to maintain the high standard of care.
The Department of Health and local primary care trust contribute less than 20% towards the annual running costs, so the majority of the revenue comes from fund raising, donations, legacies, support groups, the hospice’s own lottery and investments.
It is essential that support for the Kirkwood Hospice continues so it can look forward to the next 25 years. After all, a member of your family or a close friend may need its valued help one day.

Bargains galore every day! K
IRKWOOD Hospice now has a network of 17 shops throughout Kirklees, selling a range of quality donated items.
They raised more than £1.6m for patient care in 2010/11. The shops stock a range of used women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, bric-a-brac, toys, books, and DVDs. They also sell new goods at very affordable prices, which make ideal gifts for friends and family. The shops rely on the generous donations of members of the public to keep them well stocked. They always need your help, so if you have any items that you no longer need please think about Kirkwood Hospice and donate them at any one of its shops. If you are a tax payer, please remember to sign up to Kirkwood’s Gift Aid scheme when you donate your items — enabling the hospice to claim an extra 25% back from the Government on the value of your donations. If you do not have a shop nearby then simply call the hospice reception on 01484 557900 to arrange your free collection. Did you know that even your old clothing helps to raise money too? 25 years and still really loving the hospice work
V
OLUNTEERING plays a vital role in the running of the Kirkwood Hospice.
If it weren’t for the hospice’s army of volunteers, much of the essential day-to-day work would be much more difficult. Volunteers take on all kinds of roles including manning the reception desk, gardening, recycling, transporting patients, running the hospice shops, acting as ward clerks and much more. Altogether around 35,000 hours were notched up by volunteers in 2011. Judith Robinson, who has been involved with Kirkwood Hospice from day one, is the volunteer co-ordinator. She said: “I came here in October 1986 before we opened in March. At the time I was doing an Open University course and I had to attend a lecture about death and dying. This was at the time when there were very few hospices in the UK.
“I was enthralled by the lecture and about the information on how a hospice works. This was when I knew I had to get involved. “Most of the volunteers who come to help us at Kirkwood have had some dealings with a hospice or have had relatives or friends who have needed its help. “They have seen first-hand the invaluable work it does and want to get involved.’’ Judith has seen changes in the hospice’s 25-year history. “The number of volunteers has increased over the years and we now take on more roles. Last year alone we took on 48 new volunteers. Quite often we get young people volunteering as well, as part of Duke of Edinburgh award schemes or who come to us from local colleges. “I know that 16 of our current volunteers have been here right from the start.’’ Anyone who wants to get involved in volunteering at the hospice can ring Judith on 01484 557900.

■ FUNDRAISING: Hilary Turner
She still loves the work. Hilary is responsible for all financial issues at Kirkwood and oversees the major annual fundraising effort. “Things have obviously changed over the years as the hospice has grown; the major issue, of course, being the need to raise even more money as we have expanded and offered more services to the people of Kirklees.’’ Hilary said the fundraising target for the first year’s running costs was £380,000. In more recent times this has increased to over £4m every year.

■ VOLUNTEER: Judith Robinson
She said: “This year we have to raise the normal £4m along with an extra £3m to cover the refurbishment work for the inpatient unit. “This means it is essential that people continue to support us in whatever way they can.’’ Hilary, who started her working role at the hospice as a part-time administrator said: “There is always a great sense of achievement when we reach our target and it is also very humbling to see how the money comes in. Funds are not normally raised in big amounts; donations tend to come from people who are sending in just small amounts. “This all adds up and we are grateful for every penny. “It is the small gestures which add up.’’
Caring for 25 years S
ENIOR Sister Gill Hinchliffe, has been caring for Kirkwood patients since the hospice first opened.
As she moved back to the Huddersfield area 25 years ago, the hospice was about to open and was recruiting staff. Gill, who was interested in the hospice movement and care of terminally ill patients, got a job initially as a part-time staff nurse working nights. “As I was thinking of returning to work after having my children, there was a lot in the press about opening a hospice in Kirklees. “At that time the hospice movement was in its infancy. There were a few hospices open across the country but not many.’’ Today Gill is Senior Sister at Kirkwood Hospice, working in the 16-bed inpatient unit. She said: “Things have changed a lot over the years and we now offer more services to individuals. We have been able to educate other professionals about palliative care which can be delivered in the community. “Today patients have more choice about how they are cared for and where they want to die: either at home or in the care of the hospice. “Often they can be looked after in their
own home unless there is a crisis and they need nursing care in a hospice situation. “There is a popular misconception that once a patient arrives in the hospice, he or she never leaves. We regularly have patients who stay with us for a while, often to get pain under control, and then return back to their homes again. “Patients can have very complex problems and I hope my nursing team can make a difference to their lives.’’ Gill leads a team of about 30 nurses and is supported by two nursing sisters, Sarah Shaw and Noreen Williams. She said: “I feel that the nursing staff do make a difference. When you see someone go home again, relatively well, it is very rewarding. “When you have helped someone to die peacefully and also supported the family, it does mean a lot.’’ Gill said she recently addressed an audience about the new Capital Appeal. During her address she recounted a comment from a hospice patient who said they had turned his life around from wanting to be at the end of his life, to now looking forward to the rest of his life. “He said he could not thank us enough, and this is what makes the job so rewarding.’’

Kirkwood’s 16-bed inpatient unit is located in the oldest part of the hospice building. The unit has undergone improvements and redecoration over the years, although the layout and in-built services available have remained largely unchanged in the last 25 years. With major advances in the early diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening illness, patients are now living longer with their illness. As care becomes more long term, patients have more complex needs and additional facilities and equipment are required. As a result, a plan has been developed to refurbish and extend the inpatient unit to meet the needs of patients and families today. Kirkwood needs your help to raise £3m over the coming year to fund these essential works.
Wall-mounted televisions in single rooms and arm-mounted televisions in the bays. Two separate nurses’ stations will maximise efficiency, extend observation points and ensure patient safety. Improved layout and facilities will increase the amount of time nurses are able to spend on direct patient contact. Piped oxygen and a suction system will be installed throughout so that it is available at every bed for any patient who may require it. The nurse call facility will be replaced with an up-to-date and portable system. The single rooms will include full ceiling tracking in order to move patients around more easily and comfortably, reducing the risk of patient falls and protecting the health and safety of nurses while they are moving patients. Bringing facilities up to date is an essential part of improving the service provided for the residents of Kirklees and also for the staff and volunteers who work at the hospice. Additional plans include: Increasing energy efficiency in order to reduce running costs and minimise the carbon footprint. Fully rewiring the inpatient unit and upgrading the number of electrical power points.
Kirkwood’s new unit will cost £3m. This will cover all capital costs, including the purchase of new equipment. The building works will commence in June 2012 and it is expected that the doors of the new, improved inpatient unit will open in June 2013. How You Can Help? The Capital Appeal to raise £3m will run throughout 2012. This is in addition to the money raised by hospice friends and supporters every year to help fund the day-to-day running costs and services already being provided. Some forthcoming Capital Appeal Events are included in this supplement, including Kirkwood’s Sponsor a Brick campaign. This campaign will raise funds for the Capital Appeal, while also laying a new path in the grounds of the hospice. Remember your loved one and support Kirkwood by adding your personal inscription to the path of bricks. The path will lead to a new permanent feature, a specially designed labyrinth, to sit in harmony with the new building and enhance the gardens

The refurbished and extended building will improve the support and care provided for patients and their families. This will include: Nine single bedrooms, all en-suite and with an overnight bed for families, thus improving privacy and dignity for patients and their loved ones. Having more single rooms also provides more flexibility on admissions and makes infection control more effective. A new three-bed and a four-bed bay for patients who prefer the social interaction of a shared ward, and a separate bedroom for families wishing to stay over. More communal facilities for patients and their families away from the bedside, including a large family lounge with a kitchen and dining areas. More quiet spaces and private meeting areas, with space to accommodate a bed so that patients in the multi-occupancy bays can have private conversations regarding their care and needs. Two assisted bathrooms with whirlpool baths. Being able to take a bath can make a real difference to a patient.
This will ensure that there are adequate sockets for electric beds, mattresses and other essential equipment and for patients’ electronic equipment such as MP3 players and phone chargers, while avoiding the need for extension cables and adaptors. Improving the amount of natural light throughout the building. Ensuring that all beds have an outlook and access to the gardens, as outside space is of significant therapeutic value to patients and families. The new unit will upgrade the facilities and environment for inpatients and their families, while retaining the warm, homely, relaxed atmosphere of the hospice. It will make it easier for staff to carry out their duties and spend more time with patients and it will ensure that patients get the care and dignity they deserve.
of Kirkwood. Your own personal inscription will leave a lasting impression and give out a huge message of support to all the patients, families and staff at Kirkwood. In return for your order you will receive a certificate to confirm the wording of your inscription and once the bricks have been laid you will receive an invite to walk along the footpath and see your inscription for yourself. Thank you very much for the first 25 years
T
WENTY five years ago after six years of planning, hard work and serious fundraising, Kirkwood Hospice opened its doors to patients from Kirklees living with life threatening illnesses.
Twenty five years on, it’s still largely thanks to the people of Kirklees that make it possible for the hospice to care year after year. The Kirkwood story started in June 1981, inspired by a BBC TV play called Going Gently. Soon after, an article in the Huddersfield Examiner praised the play, about two elderly people dying from terminal illnesses in a hospital ward. Fundraising The author of the article also referred to the UK hospice movement, while highlighting the fact that Kirklees had no such facility at a time when about 1,000 terminally ill people were dying each year in the area. The article was read by David Stocks, whose father had recently died from cancer, spurring him to reply by asking if readers would be interested in starting an appeal for a hospice. On July 1, a meeting at David’s house was attended by eight people and the appeal was born, starting with 50p donations! As a result of these humble yet important beginnings, a public meeting was arranged, attended by 200 people. As a result of this meeting, the Huddersfield Hospice Appeal was launched, its initial aim being to raise £300,000 to help fund the project. In the meantime, more subscriptions were being collected and support groups started, not only to raise funds and gain community support but to create awareness of hospice care, by dispelling the common myth that hospices were just places where people went to die. Within three months, the support groups raised £10,000, and a staggering £100,000 in the first year of the appeal! Dr Alan Barlow was then made chairman of the appeal. In 1983, a similar appeal started in Dewsbury merged with the Huddersfield Hospice Appeal, as it was decided that it was not practical to
have two hospices in Kirklees.
Planning the Hospice Originally, it had been suggested that the hospice could be accommodated within an existing building no longer in use. However, ultimately it was decided that a custom-built solution designed to meet the specific requirements of patients and their families would be the most suitable choice. The location would be in the grounds of Mill Hill Hospital, Dalton, a site chosen for its ease of access for visitors by public transport and by car and for its serene and peaceful rural environment. Even before this site was chosen, between 1982/83, £230,000 had been raised, with further sums of up to £9,000 being raised each month by the support groups! This in turn spurred on even more members of the community to get involved in a range of activities. Donations from companies, schools, church collections, folk clubs, pubs and coffee mornings also played their part in raising funds then, as much as they still do today. The architects set to work drawing up plans for a single-storey building to accommodate 10 patients, a day care centre, a chapel and staff facilities. The building cost would be £500,000 with running costs of £250,000 per annum. With a completion period of 12 months in mind, work commenced in March 1986. By August, former Nursing Officer John Murgatroyd, was appointed and recruitment for other key members of staff was soon underway. Two weeks before the hospice opened its doors to its first patients, the new staff attended an induction, where they were made aware of their various responsibilities and kept busy ensuring that all the equipment was sterilised, installed correctly and in full working order, ready for the opening day. On March 31, 1987, Kirkwood Hospice was officially opened by Kathy Staff (Norah Batty from Last Of The Summer Wine) David Stocks, founder of the appeal fund and Dr Alan Barlow, hospice president. ■ HISTORY: Early days at Kirkwood Hospice in Albany Road, Dalton (above) when building work first got under way and (right) the more familiar face of the hospice as it is today with its extensive garden area changes in the world of palliative care and medicine. The hospice is constantly aware of these changes and developments and is in a position to implement them effectively, with confidence in the knowledge that the patients at Kirkwood will always receive the very best treatment and service that the hospice team is capable of providing. Twenty five years on and Kirkwood is once again faced with the challenge of raising funds
for an inpatient facility. The Capital Appeal was launched on January 31 2012 to raise the £3m required to refurbish and extend the hospice, ensuring that Kirkwood can continue to provide the very best in palliative care for the next 25 years and beyond! This new appeal will, perhaps, prove even more challenging than the original appeal.
