The latest trend in confectionery is the ‘naked’ cake — one without its icing.

Enthusiasts like to bake several layers to really showcase the fillings, often laced with fresh fruit such as blueberries or raspberries to add colour.

They are particularly popular as wedding cakes as marzipan falls from favour.

Tarek Malouf, founder of London’s Hummingbird Bakery, tells us: ‘The naked cake trend is big news right now as far as wedding cakes go.

‘People love the rustic simplicity of the naked design.

‘With a naked cake, it’s quite literally what’s on the inside that really counts.’

As the winners of the Examiner’s Win a Dream Wedding competition, they were lucky enough to win a dream wedding worth more than £14,000.

Chris and Sarah were chosen as the lucky couple when all the finalists gathered at Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium. Couples earned a golden ticket for every 1,000 tokens they collected and the winning ticket was chosen at random.

The story of how they met is just perfect for a dream wedding as Chris moved more than 100 miles to be with his true love.

Chris, originally from Birmingham, met Sarah on a night out when she was visiting a friend in nearby Warwick.

“It’s just perfect timing because we really want to get married but we’re hoping to buy a house so all our money’s going into that.

“We really want to get married as soon as possible so next year will be perfect.”

Sarah and Chris’s wedding package includes a wedding reception for 60 day guests and 80 evening guests at the John Smith’s Stadium, complete with a wedding breakfast, evening reception, honeymoon in Cyprus and bridal gown worth up to £1,000.

The other prizes are suit hire, bridesmaid dresses, flowers, photography, wedding cake (sweet and pork pie version), wedding car, gospel choir, make-up and beauty, chair covers and sashes, fun casino, overnight accommodation, décor, luxury skincare, wedding music, tooth whitening and even a magician.

After six years together, Chris, a manager at Kirklees Active Leisure, popped the question on Valentine’s Day this year - an extra special day for the pair, as it is also veterinary nurse Sarah’s birthday.

She said: “Chris always hides my presents in boxes because I’m terrible, I always try to feel them.

“There was a balloon in the box and it popped out, I just let it blow away!

“There was a message on it that said “Will you marry me” and I was so shocked. I had to read it and read it again until it registered.

Chris was sat there with the ring. It was very romantic.”

The couple entered the Win a Dream Wedding competition as saving to buy a house meant there was little money left over for a wedding.

Always & Forever in Sowerby Bridge. As for the bridesmaid dresses, I am waiting for new collections coming out before I make a decision.

The couple will have five bridesmaids and a flower girl.

She said: “I’m looking at fuschia pink for the colour for the bridesmaids. Chris and the men from the bridal party will choose their suits in the New Year and I will book my flowers later when I have sorted out the bridesmaid dresses.

“When we won the competition it was amazing, such a wonderful surprise. We will save a fortune and should now be able to move into our own home. We are renting at the moment and saving for a deposit for a home.

Because we have won our wedding, we should be able to buy a home much quicker. It would have taken us years to save up.

“Everyone is so happy for us, it will be a wonderful wedding day.’’
