It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Autumn — a knitter’s favorite season — is full of casual festivity and comfort. We naturally seek out small pockets of timeless coziness in our days, whether it be the first hot coffee of the season, fresh cider donuts, a walk through dazzling leaves, knitting by the fire, or curling up in our favorite hand knits with a good book.
Our Autumn/Winter ‘23 collection is a tribute to the comforts of fall, harkening to years past. We’re known for our heritage designs, and for this season, we leaned a bit retro, riffing on the prints, colors, and textiles of the 1970s. While the designs have a retro nod, the collection has all the modern hallmarks of H+W designs, made with your daily life in mind.
In this collection, you’ll find seven sweaters and four accessories to make now and wear forever. Cables, textures, and colorwork are equal partners in this collection, with several stand out designs by friends of the flock Emily Greene, Samantha Guerin, Seth Richardson, Jill Thompson Beach, and Cheryl Toy, as well as contributions from both of us.
As always, our collection is sized inclusively, with all sweaters designed to fit a 30”-64”+ chest. We’re always working for a better, more inclusive design catalog, and continue to refine our design construction for a better fit on all bodies.
We hope you find something that inspires you to make for yourself or loved ones this fall as we usher in the best of seasons with hand knitwear for everyone.
With love, Sloane + Meghan

Claire Sloane Rosenthal Sloane RosenthalSignature style meets classic cables — Claire by Sloane Rosenthal perfectly melds an updated modified drop shoulder silhouette with juicy, rhythmic cables for the ideal everyday sweater. Made with her busy life in mind, this sweater often dubs as a sweatshirt replacement, refining a casual everyday look without sacrificing comfort.
Sloane’s thoughtful modified drop-shoulder silhouette has become an H+W signature, with simple, straightforward instructions for easy finishing. Made from the bottom up, the front and back of the sweater are worked flat, blocked, and joined by a three-needle bind off at the shoulders. The sleeves are then picked up and knit from the armholes, leaving just the underarm and sides for seaming in finishing. The cozy mock turtleneck is picked up and worked in the round, folded over and seamed down. Instructions for alternate necklines are included in the pattern.

The throwback sweater we all need, Elise by Cheryl Toy marries collegiate jersey style with a heritage colorwork motif for a retro-inspired sweater that is at home in any decade. This cozy design features a v-neck and ribbing with color pops and a graphic band motif that runs across the body and upper arms.
Worked from the top down in the round, this sweater’s bold colorwork employs duplicate stitch to add a third color in finishing, so you only need to carry two colors while knitting the body. Optional instructions are included for a tubular bind of at the hem, sleeves, and collar.

Classic menswear with a retro flavor, Foster by Meghan Babin features flowing cables and interlocking medallions for a unique twist on the classic cabled pullover. The V-shape of the medallion placement aligns with a menswear aesthetic, emphasizing the shoulders and narrowing at the hips for a flattering silhouette. The modified drop shoulder construction of this sweater allows for an unbroken flow of cables on the body and sleeves. Made in Forge using our NEW for fall color Bourbon, this sweater is constructed from the bottom up in pieces, the shoulders are joined with a three-needle bind off, while the sleeves, underarms, and sides are seamed after blocking. The classic foldover neckband is picked up and worked in the round.

Sloane Rosenthal Sloane Rosenthalhazel
Ethereal, soothing, and functional — three words that aren’t necessarily found together often, but perfectly capture Hazel by Sloane Rosenthal. This massive, uber-comforting shawl features sections of simple mosaic knitting with a huge payoff. Wear it traditionally or wrapped around your neck as a voluptuous scarf: this shawl is one to take everywhere as a security blanket with style.
Made in Weld, this lightweight shawl is worked from the top down in a traditional triangle shape. Three sections of mosaic knitting transition the colors throughout the shawl, ending with a squishy ribbed border. For the last leg of this shawl, you’ll want an extra long needle to accommodate the stitches. Once bound off, watch this beauty bloom in blocking.

Inspired by retro stained glass lampshades often found over billiards and pub tables, Huxley by Meghan Babin gives a groovy pop to your outerwear. This tubular cowl features a flowing motif that transitions through six heritage colors of Forge.
Worked from a small circumference, this cowl is cast on 16” circular needles and worked in a tube from the bottom up. The many ends are encased in the tube, needing only minimal securing before seaming the tube together in finishing.

Joanie, by Jill Thompson Beach, is a simple, lightweight, slightly-cropped pullover with a little intarsia excitement on the sleeves. A nod to the ubiquitous chevron in 70s prints, Joanie strips it down to a modern, minimalist accent for uncomplicated wear. Ideal to pair with your favorite jeans or over a dress, this breezy sweater is the autumn wardrobe staple.
Made in Weld, this pullover is worked at a lofty gauge from the top down with raglan shoulder shaping. The lower body is worked in the round, while the sleeves are worked flat to accommodate the intarsia motif and seamed in finishing. The collar is picked up and worked in the round and a final block is recommended to allow the colorwork and fabric to bloom.

Made in our light and springy Weld, this circular yoke pullover is worked from the top down in the round. The motifs are worked from simple, easy-to-follow charts and the lower body and sleeves knit up quickly in the round. Seth Richardson Seth Richardsonsandlines
Sandlines, by Seth Richardson, is a chance to explore in stitches the angular motifs of the American Southwest. The flowing and overlapping zigzags over a 2x2 ribbed background was inspired by the practice of sand raking and tire tracks along desert roads. Made from the bottom up in one piece, this gorgeous scarf’s inspiration might harken to Southwest of years past, but is entirely modern in its clean, minimalist lines and texture, making it an outerwear staple for the modern knitter.

Meghan Babinsaven ii
Being a designer known for menswear and unisex designs, the question Meghan receives most often is, “are you making a feminine version?” In most cases, the answer is usually “no,” but in the case of Saven, the shoulder-emphasizing raglan-saddle construction meant that making the design really work for a feminine shape required some reimagining.
Saven II, by Meghan Babin, features all the same gobsmacking cables as the original, with a simplified modified-drop-shoulder construction and a fit designed for a more petite frame. Based on ASTM Sizing for Women, Saven II is worked at a loftier gauge than the original, for a fabric with more drape and softness. The back and front are worked flat from the bottom up and joined at the shoulders with a three-needle bind off. The sleeves are picked up and knit from the armholes, leaving just the underarm and sides of the sweater to seam in finishing.
