Energy Conservation vs. Energy Efficiency

You’d figure the two terms are

related, and they are, but they’re different too. Energy conservation has to do with taking steps to use less energy. Many of these steps are quite simple, such as turning off a light you’re not using.

Let’s say, in the wintertime, you lower your thermostat a couple of degrees and put on a sweater. Or you open the blinds and let in the sun’s warmth during the day, but draw the curtains or close the blinds at night to help prevent heat from escaping. That’s energy conservation. It can be as easy as turning off your home comfort system and opening the windows on days when the weather is mild. You could also put a little effort into sealing leaks. Caulking gaps and cracks around door frames and windows, along

with sealing and insulating attics, walls and floors over crawl spaces, keeps heat in and conserves energy. Energy efficiency means you use less energy while doing the same thing. There’s typically a mechanical or technological element. Energy efficiency is integrated into the design of the equipment, and you see this result when upgrading your current appliances with new, more efficient models. For example, a new heating system will likely have a higher efficiency rating than your old one. So, even when you set your thermostat at the very same temperature – say, 68 degrees – the more energy-efficient model will use less energy than the old model also set at 68 degrees. Investing for Energy Savings Unless your home is brand new,

you may have noticed that it offers a number of opportunities for improvements. These improvements can yield a wide range of returns. For example, some updates add curb appeal, such as landscaping, exterior painting and new walkways. Some improvements increase the actual value of your home – typically kitchen and bathroom upgrades fall into this category. Improvements can also protect your investment – perhaps repairs to a leaking roof. Then there are those investments that start paying you a return right away in energy savings. Projects of this type include: Weather stripping doors and windows – If you’ve got cold air

When Older Isn’t Wiser...

Duct sealing – Typically, about 20% to 30% of air moving through a duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts. Sealing and insulating air ducts can improve system efficiency substantially. Insulate basement, attic and crawlspace – Proper insulation can reduce heating and cooling costs by as much as 20%. Programmable thermostat – These automatically raise or lower temperature settings based on when your home is occupied and active – and can cut energy bills by 10%.

Many people actually experience what is called “the winter blues.” It is comprised of mild depression, lack of motivation and low energy.

So, what can you do to feel good this winter? Exercise – Not only does it help you stay fit and healthy, it’s also a great stress reliever. When you exercise, your mind is able to release “feel good chemicals” that help improve your mood. Exercise gives you a boost of energy that lasts all day long. Eat a Healthy Diet – Eating right has a big effect on your mood. Stick with lean meats, fruits and veggies. Carbs are important for energy, but instead of choosing bad ones (such as soda, candy and sugar) opt instead for more complex carbohydrates that are better for you (such as whole wheat bread, brown rice and sweet potatoes). Treat Yourself – Add motivation by giving yourself a reward at the end of your week, such as a family outing or spa visit. Sit Back and Relax – Slow down! Don’t let an overwhelming schedule take over your life. Put on the brakes when you need to.

Winter’s Skin Who doesn’t love a rosy glow

to our cheeks during wintertime? But that tight, itchy dryness that comes along with it? Maybe not so much. To prevent your skin from becoming damaged during cold weather, follow these tips: Moisturize – Choose an oil-based ointment rather than water-based. The oil creates a protective layer on your skin and enables it to retain more moisture than a regular cream would.

Sunscreen – Yes, you should apply sunscreen in the winter too. The sun may not be producing as much warmth, but it’s still sending out UV rays. Using sunscreen year-round will help reduce dryness and wrinkles. Hydrate – Great skin starts from the inside out. Drinking water helps your skin stay moisturized and looking young. For another form of hydration, place a humidifier in your room or office. These handy devices add moisture in the air, which will help prevent your skin, nose, lips and throat from drying out. Be sure to clean your humidifier regularly to keep it sanitary (mold & mildew like moisture too!). 3
