SUMMER 2014

<LOGO> <PHONE> <WEBSITE>

My Word by <NAME> Hello Friends, When I was a kid, one of my favorite things about summer was taking a break from school homework. How about you? Actually, though some think there’s more now, I saw recently that students are getting the same amount of homework today as they were 30 years ago. Maybe it just feels like more these days because families are so busy! For me, “home work” has a different meaning now. I have the privilege of working in the homes of people very important

Avoiding Summertime Plumbing Problems

Summer is a busy time for your

household plumbing, considering the extra showers, landscape irrigation, possible pool time or simply increased activity with children in and out more often. So what can go wrong? Toilets get clogged. Toilets see extra use with more folks around. Keep a plunger handy to clear small clogs. Call us for big ones. Disposals get clogged. If you’re cooking more, you’ll have more food waste to dispose of. Three things to remember: Don’t pour cooking oil down the drain but discard in the trash. Avoid putting hard-textured fruits and vegetables in the drain. When you use your disposal, run cold water before, during and after grinding to make sure the drain becomes clear.

Wash cycles go wrong. This season of sports and outdoor activities means extra loads of laundry for your washing machine. Check your hoses and replace if you see signs of wear and tear. Also, don’t “set it and forget it.” Only wash your laundry when you are at home and available if something unusual occurs. Sewer lines get backed up. Tree roots that push into underground lines and keep growing are often a cause of sewer lines backing up. Another cause comes from flushing items in the toilet that should be discarded in a trash can. When a sewer line clogs, the water has nowhere to go in the line so it shows up in your plumbing fixtures. You’ll probably see the first sign in your toilets, which have the most direct path to the sewer line. Call us and let us help.

DIY Alert: Projects You Shouldn’t Try on Your Own

Be careful that your next “do-it-

yourself” project doesn’t end with the all-too-common “I shouldn’t have done that” regret. The untrained face a range of issues, including misuse of power tools, falls from heights or misjudgments about electricity and plumbing. Turn to a pro for: Roof Repair – One misstep could send you spiraling toward the ground. Next stop: the emergency room. Tree Removal – Possible misjudgments include interference with power lines, large objects falling in a surprising direction and seriously sharp blades that don’t distinguish between trees and people. Electrical Work – Great advice for avoiding fire, electrical shock and code violations: hire an experienced licensed electrician when extending electrical circuits or adding new ones.

Plumbing Work – While some plumbing projects are easily tackled by the competent DIYer, you’ll need a pro for projects that put your property and person at risk. For example, if you don’t know what you’re doing with propane-torch soldering, your outcome could be a flood or a fire – instead of a plumbing repair.

Only let the pros work with your water-supply lines and your water heating system. Even small mistakes can lead to damaged pipes or water-damaged walls. Got a new bathtub in mind? Get a skilled plumber in the house. Also, remember, a small, unnoticed leak can cost you a whole lot. Avoid plumbing repairs concealed by walls, floors and ceilings. And call us for any of the above.

Is your doctor’s terminology often more complicated than your actual condition? It’s not uncommon to leave the doctor with a serious case of misunderstanding. This list can help you translate common doctor-speak into plain English…

It can either be a benign relic from previous health issues or should be further investigated. The Doctor Says: NODULE Layman’s Terms: Usually not harmful, a nodule is a response to an injury when a small clump of cells form on some tissue, such as a tendon or muscle.
