Winter Clubs are Coming!

Winter is coming to Hudson Montessori School! It is hard to believe but winter is finally here, even though it seems like we skipped fall and went directly from summer to winter.

Like last winter, clubs will begin the first full week of the new calendar year on Monday, January 7 and will run through Thursday, March 21, right before the beginning of Spring Break (unless noted otherwise by individual clubs). It is our hope that your children find these activities enriching because they continue to reinforce the intrinsic values of a Montessoriinspired education.

After-School Clubs - Mondays Science & Math of the Golden Ratio Instructor: Laurie Householder Levels: All Ages When: Mondays, 3:15-4:15pm Cost: $200 Min. 8 , Max. 12

In this club, we will explore the golden ratio and sacred geometry. The golden ratio, whose symbol is the Greek letter “Phi”, is a special number that appears many times in geometry, art, architecture, music, and nature. Our exploration will consist of hands-on experiments and sensorial observations of this fascinating concept. Students will practice and explore measurements, calculations and geometric models, and listen to what Φ sounds like in music. Participants will make origami, draw mandalas and make a rangoli (Indian art form) inspired by Phi. We will play a musical interpretation of Φ on a keyboard and a xylophone. From flowers, trees, shells, hurricanes, human faces, animal bodies, and even the Pantheon in Greece, the golden ratio and sacred geometry is all around us. Activities will be differentiated based on developmental and academic levels. It is never too early to inspire geometric thinking! Kindle your interest in math and geometry and discover the magic of Φ.

After-School Clubs - Mondays Classroom Antics’ Engineering Club Instructor: Classroom Antics Staff Levels: Ext. Day and Above When: Mondays, 3:15-4:45pm Cost: $225 Min. 4 , Max. 12

Module 1: Crazy Chemicals Chemical engineers apply chemistry to solve problems in our lives from blowing bigger chewing gum bubbles to creating fuel that blasts spacecrafts further, to making salt water drinkable. In this module, we will learn about different properties of chemicals, like density, acidity, and surface tension. This will teach us the science behind lava lamps, slime, tie-dye, and much more. We will also design soap powered boats and crystalized creations. Lastly, no chemical engineering club would be complete without a vinegar/ baking soda explosion!

*Meets on January 7, 14, 28, and February 4. If needed, the snowday make-up is February 11; otherwise, the club will not meet on February 11

Module 2: Planes, Trains, and Auto Engineers In this module, we will learn all about the different ways people get from one place to another, over land, in water, or through the skies. First, we will study boats and make our own water-crafts and design a survival raft. Next, we will learn about cars and city planning by outlining cities and modeling environmentallyfriendly cars. Lastly, we take to the skies and learn about planes – how they work, how they’re designed, and how to make them fly faster and longer. Students will gain an appreciation for all of the ways engineers help people get where they need to go. **Meets on February 25, March 4, 11, and 18. If needed, the snowday make-up is April 1 ***Modules 1 and 2 are both included in the Winter Club Session lineup; each lasts 4 weeks with one snowday make-up date if needed.

We use core STEM concepts but evolve it into STEAM, by adding elements of Art/Design as well. All projects will be done on Raspberry Pi computers, which are extremely innovative and engaging system for coding and engineering. New to HMS, we will be forming a Robotics Team and will participate via the FIRST LEGO League. Per the program, “Each team researches a real-world problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., and are challenged to develop a solution. They also must design, build, program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS®, then compete on a table-top playing field.” FIRST specializes in international STEAM programming and competitions. We will develop this program this winter, and then continue in the spring as well, in order to expand it into a future year-long team that will travel and compete in FIRST tournaments during the academic year. In the meantime, we have several scenarios and past challenges to rehearse, and we will schedule a mock tournament with a local school. Should a local tournament present itself in the Greater Columbus, Cleveland/Akron, or Pittsburgh area this winter or spring, we will look into scheduling travel there.
