“The day that my son and daughter wore caps and gowns and graduated from Center for Spectrum Services was a dream come true for me. I never thought that day would happen and I will treasure it in my heart forever!” ~ Karen, mother of Casey & Alexis

CENTER FOR SPECTRUM SERVICES brightening the lives of people with autism A Request From The Heart On September 29, 2012, Center for Spectrum Services is holding its second annual Artists for Autism gala classical chamber music event. We host this extraordinary concert to raise funds to help us continue to provide the programs and support our children need to achieve their highest potential; and, to raise public awareness of Autism and its impact in our local communities. This has always been our hearts’ endeavor, personified by our cofounders, Susan Buckler and Jamey Wolff who recently received the Heart of Ulster County Award from the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce and the Ulster Development Corporation for their lifetime of service to families touched by autism throughout the Hudson Valley. From our hearts to yours, we ask you to join us in Spectrum Services’ work by becoming an Artists for Autism underwriting partner. With your help, Center for Spectrum Services will continue to bring progress, hope and joy to the hearts of those we serve.

Serving the Entire Hudson Valley of New York The Center for Spectrum Services operates schools and programs in both Kingston and Ellenville, NY with reach into 54 school districts in 14 counties in the Hudson Valley area of New York. For the 2011-2012 school year, the Center for Spectrum Services is serving students from 35 school districts in 6 counties throughout the Hudson Valley. Our agency also operates the Spectrum Services Clinic, which serves people of all ages with known or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Clinic offers a variety of services including evaluations, consultations, trainings, and individual and group counseling for people of all ages. Spectrum Services serves 270 individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders annually.

Since our founding in 1976, our school program has served a cumulative enrollment of nearly 3,500 students with autism. State-wide, National and International Reach Center for Spectrum Services reaches beyond the local communities where our schools are located. Trainings through our Clinic are open to educational, clinical, and administrative staff members and families touched by autism throughout New York’s Hudson Valley and beyond.

With your help, Center for Spectrum Services will continue to bring progress, hope and joy to the hearts of those we serve. Over the past 36 years, we have provided training to more than 4,000 professionals and parents across the state and the nation. In late 2009, we released a film entitled The Asperger’s Difference, a critically acclaimed short documentary aimed at young people with Asperger Syndrome, which also helps parents, professionals and teachers support young people with Asperger’s. We also host hundreds of visitors yearly and have consulted with more than 100 school districts, agencies and families nationally.

A Unique Role in the Hudson Valley Autism has historically been a little-understood disorder. Since 1976, the Center for Spectrum Services has assumed a leadership role in Autism policymaking. Our administrative staff members have participated on National Advisory Boards, have been appointed to State committees to formulate policies, and co-authored State guidelines that have become a national model for the evaluation and education of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our agency has remained at the forefront of service delivery. When appropriately-trained professionals could not be found, we developed comprehensive training protocols for professionals and families. We also created support groups and workshops to strengthen caregiver and siblings’ knowledge and abilities. Until the early 2000s, ours was one of the only private day schools for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in New York State. The Hudson Valley is composed of a set of rural communities; local school districts neither have the resources nor the staff to meet the needs of pupils with significant Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Center for Spectrum Services fills that gap to provide those much-needed services – through our two schools, Spectrum Services Clinic, community-based services, and our film, The Asperger’s Difference.

Funds raised will support Spectrum’s programs, including the purchase of state-of-the-art electronics, such as iPads, enabling nonverbal children to communicate with their families, teachers and peers – some for the very first time. The event will also help bridge the gaps in funding left by New York State’s current fiscal crisis. In addition, proceeds will fund rebuilding the playgrounds with equipment specially adapted for children with disabilities.
